Have You Seen the Hourglass Extreme Sheen Holiday Set?

November 3rd, 2010 by Karen 62 Comments

Extreme Sheen Lipgloss in Siren

I love the blue top I’m wearing in this picture, but I’m not entirely proud of the stretchy black pants I’m wearing with it (too many 100 Grand bars before, during and after Halloween), even though they’re incredibly comfy.

How comfy are they? Well, they’re almost as comfy as the glosses in the new Hourglass Extreme Sheen Kit ($45).

Yes, you read that correctly. The three glosses in the limited edition holiday set are almost as comfortable as stretchy pants. 🙂 And they’re some of the most delightful lip products I’ve ever worn.

The colors in the kit lean toward the warm end the color spectrum, like Ignite, a golden peachy pink; Siren, a shimmery reddish copper; and Child, a pale warm pink.

Are you familiar with NARS Sweet Revenge, MAC Nymphette and/or MAC Lychee Luxe? If you like any of them, I think you might also like these.

Like the other Extreme Sheens I’ve worn, these feel divine on my lips with a smooth, thin, non-sticky texture, and since they smell faintly of cupcakes, I pretend like I have frosting on my lips when I’ve got them on (they’re flavor-free, though).

They’re also mad moisturizing! If I put ’em on when my lips feel dry when I get up in the morning, my lips really do look and feel better by the end of the day, almost like a healing lip balm.

Wear time varies among the shades. The darkest one, Siren, lasts from 4-6 hours with very little fading, while the lighter colors, Child and Ignite, last between 2 hours and 4.

Well, Hello, Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Care Kit! You’ve Put Me in a Holiday Mood

November 2nd, 2010 by Karen 25 Comments

weleda pomegranate regenerating body care kit

Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Care Kit ($10) smells just like a holiday party! Some may find the fragrant three-piece body care kit a little too eau de potpourri, but for the most part I like it.

The limited edition set, with products scented with a blend of apple cider, cinnamon, orange and pomegranate fragrances, comes with wee portions of Weleda’s Pomegranate Hand Cream, Body Wash and Body Oil from their Pomegranate Body Care Collection. They’re designed to target aging skin (doesn’t all skin age?), and the small tubes contain just enough product for about three to five uses each.

Now, these are perfect for dry winter skin. The Creamy Body Wash moisturizes more like a lotion than a sudsy wash, while the Body Oil feels thick and luxurious (my shins and feet love it). As for the Hand Cream, it leaves my paws a little greasy, but I can live with that since it also leaves them baby soft.

I’d seen the line, which has been around since 1921, at Whole Foods and Target a bunch of times but just never got around to picking it up. Now I wish I’d tried it sooner!

They’re all about flowers and herbs and made sans pesticides or other harsh chemicals. From what I’ve seen of the ingredients and considering the reasonable price, I’m impressed. All three items in the set contain plant oils and extracts up high on their ingredient lists.

Have We Met Before, Bobbi Brown Glitter Liner?

November 2nd, 2010 by Karen 51 Comments

Bobbi Brown Glitter Eyeliner in Silver, $20

Above is what happens when your home team wins the World Series while you’re swatching Bobbi Brown Glitter Eyeliner in Silver ($20).

Last night was crazy! After the game we could hear loud booms off in the distance that I presumed were revelers detonating cherry bombs, or perhaps the start of that zombie invasion I’m always talking about.

I was ready to go into Apocalypse Mode and head for the hills! Survival kit? Check. El Hub, Tabs, emergency purse and this new Bobbi limited edition liquid liner? Check.

Why the liner? Ya know, because it’s nice to look good in the face of certain doom. 🙂

Glitter Eyeliner is part of the new Bobbi Brown Choose Your Glam collection for lips, eyes and cheeks.

While I’d like to have Bobbi’s Glitter Eyeliner in Silver with me in during a zombie outbreak — great pigment, a quick-drying liquid formula, reflective and therefore easy to spot from military helicopters surveying the area for survivors, waterproof but still easy to remove — it’s not altogether original.

Silver, one of two shades (the other being Gold), looks an awful lot like MAC Superslick Liquid Eye Liner in Nocturnal from fall’s Fabulous Felines collection — same shimmery silver, same style packaging, similar brush, same fantastically long wear time and thin texture.

Please Don’t Tocca My Bianca Eau de Parfum Viaggio Set

November 2nd, 2010 by Karen 35 Comments

These little treasures of antiquity are three of Tocca Bianca’s fresh floral scents. I’ve been wanting to try these and the rest of the line for centuries, but I’ve been paralyzed by all of the options at Sephora. I think they call it stimulus overload… Don’t you hate it when that happens?

I’m glad I pulled it together in time for Sephora’s Friends & Family sale. I took advantage of it to snag this trio of scents, called the Eau de Parfum Viaggio set, and its three lovely bottles of deliciousness, 0.51-oz. Tocca Stella, Florence and Cleopatra.

Love Sheer Lipgloss? You’ll Crazy Heart This New Set from NARS

November 1st, 2010 by Karen 52 Comments

nars crazy heart swatches review photos glosses

I learned something oddly thrilling today. The new NARS Crazy Heart Set ($50) glosses are sheer enough to apply while walking down the street without a mirror (try it sometime), yet pigmented enough to make an impact on passers by.

This is brilliant news! Now I can devote more precious time and energy to important things, like unraveling the mystery behind Zac Efron’s allure.

The set comes with five sheer shades from the NARS permanent lipgloss line — Easy Lover (a hot pink), Babe (a reddish orange), Orgasm (a shimmery golden pink), Turkish Delight (a creamy light pink) and Misbehave (a cherry red with golden shimmer) — all of them highly wearable, with the exception of Turkish Delight, which looks kinda milky before it mellows into an attractive pale pink.

MAC Nymphette-s might like Orgasm, Nymphette’s sheerer cousin, and ladies who’ve always wanted to wear red lips but were too afraid to try should take a look at Babe.

All of them have the same silky smooth medium weight texture in tubes that are considerably smaller than usual for NARS lipglosses (0.14 oz. vs. 0.28), but that’s only a fraction smaller than full-size MAC Lipglasses (0.17 oz.).

Would Metallica Rock the Metallic Shades in the $36 Make Up For Ever Rock For Ever Aqua Eyes Kit?

October 28th, 2010 by Karen 43 Comments

Make Up For Ever Rock For Ever Aqua Eyes Holiday Kit

According to my very un-scientific research, which involved one sidewalk James Hetfield sighting and 10 minutes of Googling, it’s hard to say. James might not, but Kirk Hammett has been known to sport the guy-liner.

Perhaps the limited edition Make Up For Ever Rock For Ever Aqua Eyes Holiday Kit ($36), with its five mini-sticks of Make Up For Ever’s famous Aqua Eyes liner in mostly metallic finishes (there’s one lonely matte), would be worthy of the stage.

Once dry, the vibrant colors should have the wherewithal to stay put through even the longest, sweatiest, most epic guitar solos.

Make up For Ever Rock For Aqua Eyes Liners from top to bottom: Gold 9L (a metallic yellow), Bronze 10L (a metallic bronze), Dark Grey 21L (a metallic gunmetal gray), Mat Black 0L (a black matte), Silver 8L (a metallic silver)

H8 the Box, Like the Rusk: The Rusk W8LESS Hair Dryer/Iron Combo Kit

October 27th, 2010 by Karen 37 Comments

karen from makeup and beauty blog reviews rusk w8less

Do you remember The Far Side comics by Gary Larson? Some of them must have been based on my life, like this one to the right for the Midvale School for the Gifted.

It’s true. I’m like a female version of that kid. “Stupid door! Must. Push. Harder! Gah!”

As a matter of fact, I had a Midvale moment last night with the packaging for the Rusk W8LESS The Power of Light kit ($166).

The kit comes with two limited edition pink products, the Rusk W8LESS Hairdryer and Flat Iron, released for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and, no joke, the box took me at least 10 minutes to open (a Rubik’s Cube would have been easier to solve!).

El Hub was watching TV a few feet away from my grunts and groans and looked up at me like I was kidding. “Really? What are you trying to open over there? A bank vault?”

No, just a nearly impenetrable plastic box!

The Make Up For Ever Rock For Ever Eyeshadow Palette Rocked Me Like a Hurricane

October 26th, 2010 by Karen 62 Comments

karen from makeup and beauty blog reviews make up for ever rock for ever eye shadow palette

Oh, gawd! So I have another bad TV addiction, and they call it Dancing with the Stars. Why they call it that I’ll never know, since said “stars” include third string reality TV-ers like The Situation from MTV’s Jersey Shore and Audrina from The Hills, but I digress…

I was just channel surfing one night a few weeks ago when I randomly stopped to watch. I swear it was like when Britney had her breakdown and shaved her head. I desperately wanted to look away but couldn’t. The show had me by the eyeballs and would not let go!

Maybe it was the sparkly costumes or the pyrotechnic displays (seriously, on stage fire is like the oldest trick in the “you gotta watch this!” book), but now I’m hooked. And who knew that Jennifer Grey would still be such a kick @ss dancer after all these years, or that 6’8″ Rick Fox would have to work on pointing his toes?

Last night’s episode had a rock n’ roll theme, which means flames, a weird appearance by Bret Michels and his blonder than blond weave, and an awkward pasodoble danced by former NFL champ Kurt Warner (El Hub is totally rooting for him!).

None of it really rocked and rolled to me, but the Make Up For Ever Rock For Ever Eye Palette ($45), on the other hand — that’s another story. Now THAT to me is ROCK. N. FRICKIN’. ROLL!

This limited edition studded eyeshadow palette from the Rock For Ever Holiday 2010 Collection could probably pass for jewelry, yet it’s so much more! It comes with four shadows designed for sultry, sexy smokey eyes.
