Paul Mitchell’s New Luxury Hair Care Line Caters to Cats and Dogs

August 17th, 2010 by Karen 21 Comments

Written by Tabs

Today trendsetting cat blogger Tabs of the terrific Party with Tabs spills the gravy about a new line of luxury pet grooming products from Paul Mitchell.

Rise up, my four-legged friends, and demand luxurious locks and tresses! Have I got some great news for you. 🙂

Last weekend I sent my intrepid assistant over to Pure Beauty to investigate an intriguing new luxury line of pet grooming products (human tested) from acclaimed hair guru Paul Mitchell. It’s called John Paul Pet, a comprehensive system of pH balanced shampoos, conditioners and pet wipes for cats (and dogs, hrmpf!).

Lackluster coat? Flyaway fur? Perhaps John Paul can help. If your career, like mine, depends on your beguiling good looks, it might be worth a try. You may not be an international cat/dog model, but you can still look like one with the right grooming.

Have You Ever Used a Special Cream or Lotion to Lift, Firm or Smooth Specific Body Parts?

August 6th, 2010 by Karen 17 Comments

Various creams and lotions for lifting, firming and smoothing specific body parts have been around for years (hello, Clarins Bust Beauty and Nivea Good-Bye Cellulite Cream), and while I doubt that any over-the-counter cream will make the dimples on my thighs disappear, I’m not against trying anything once. 🙂

I’ve been testing two new products lately, one from Nude and one from Lush: Nude Advanced Probiotic Skincare Smoothing Body Refiner ($70) and Lush Lovely Jubblies Breast Cream ($25).

I’ve Got Eye Hopes for Korres Quercetin & Oak Eye Cream

July 31st, 2010 by Karen 16 Comments

The hella dry skin, dark circles and fine lines that frequent the area under my eyes sure get on my nerves, but I’m hoping Korres’ new Quercetin & Oak Antiageing Antiwrinkle Eye Cream ($42) will help.

Korres bills it as an ultra-hydrating eye cream to combat wrinkles, increase skin elasticity and deflate puffy patches and the appearance of dark circles. It’s packed with antioxidant rich plant extracts like baobab, which supposedly maintains firm facial muscles to help keep the skin looking firm (hmm…); yeast, to improve microcirculation under the eyes and diminish the appearance of dark circles; rhodiola rosea, a cold climate plant used for centuries as a stress adaptogen (like ginseng), which in the cream supposedly reduces fluid buildup and consequently the dreaded puffy look; quercetin, an anti-inflammatory flavonol backed by clinical research (in this case used to reduce puffiness); and oak, which is said to improve skin cell functioning to repair fine lines and wrinkles.

The product is supposed to deliver visible results almost overnight. The company makes some pretty bold statements about how well it works…

“This advanced solution stimulates cell growth and protein synthesis within the first 24 hours. The resulting improvement in skin-cell functioning dramatically repairs fine lines and wrinkles.”

Would You Slather Your Face with Snail Gel in the Name of Beauty?

July 28th, 2010 by Karen 51 Comments

Gross and ewww! Add this to the weird beauty product files — De Tuinen Snail Gel, a skincare product made from the slime of Chilean snails (!), supposedly softens, smooths and supports skin elasticity for a more youthful-looking you.

Apparently, these snails ooze a slime high in allantoin, a compound found naturally in most mammals (but not in humans). It’s an active ingredient in many over-the-counter beauty products for its purported moisturizing and exfoliating properties (it’s said to help loosen and shed the outer layers of skin).

Chilean snail farmers (now there’s a phrase you don’t hear often) first discovered the moisturizing power of the slime, and clinical tests have shown that snail secretions high in allantoin can, in fact, plump the skin.

For a mere £20.45 (about $32 US dollars), Britain’s Holland and Barrett, specialists in natural supplements and herbs, will send you your very own jar of snail goo. 🙂

Sorry, US babes — at least for the now, the company only ships to countries in Europe.

For the record, I am totally grossed out by snails, slugs and other slimy things, but I’d probably try almost anything in the name of beauty science.

Well, I don’t know about that. I keep picturing snail butts…

Body Hair Has Reason to Fear EOS Evolution of Smooth Shave Cream

July 27th, 2010 by Karen 116 Comments

eos evolution of smooth shave cream review

My bad luck in the crap shoot that is genetics = totally your gain. Why else would the powers that be bestow upon me a dense thicket of body hair if not to serve as a guinea pig for all of (hairy) womankind?

Peep the latest episode in the epic struggle between Karen and all forms of hair removal technology — this bottle of EOS Evolution of Smooth Pomegranate Raspberry Shave Cream.

I picked it up at Tar-ghay last week when the cute pink bottle caught my eye (it was also on sale for $2, down from the regular $5).

The Pomegranate Raspberry version is one of seven scents in the line. EOS dipped into their garden for these paraben-free bad boys, adding aloe, oat and shea butter to moisturize parched skin.

Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit Body Butter: Heavy Duty Hydration in a Bright Citrus Blend

July 23rd, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

pacifica brazilian mango grapefruit body butter review

Ugh, what was I thinking trying to put myself on body butter parole? I told myself NO NEW BODY BUTTERS until I finished both open tubes of Pacifica Hawaiian Ruby Guava and Malibu Lemon Blossom, but then I started hanging out with a bad good influence, Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit ($18)…

The rich formula moisturizes all of my scaliest bits, wiping out the patches of beef jerky skin that appear on parts of my hands, arms and legs if I’m not vigilant.

Brazilian Mango’s crisp, tart fragrance blends notes of peach, apricot, pineapple, mango and grapefruit in a bright and classy way — like mimosas made with expensive champagne.

Kirkland daily facial cleansing towelettes review

Ladies, I’ve seen the light! They’re big, bright, and high above the beauty section at your nearby Costco store. 🙂

Do you do Costco? On a recent trip I picked up a $12 pack of their Kirkland Daily Facial Cleansing Towelettes, and now I’m kicking myself for not trying them sooner.

My Costco card…

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen: Protect Ya Neck!

July 13th, 2010 by Karen 22 Comments

We may be knee deep in fall as far as makeup and beauty companies are concerned, but they don’t get the final word. The calendar still says SUMMER! Peep this very cool piece o’ summery sun protection from indie line Jane Iredale. Translucent Powder-Me SPF 30 ($44) is a powder-based broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen for face and body.

With titanium dioxide, a highly refractive compound common in sunscreens for adults and children, it gets to work immediately, which means not having to wait 20-30 minutes before it’s safe to head out in the sun.

To apply, just pat the powder onto your skin using the attached puff (under the lid). Then gently rub. I usually use my fingers, but the puff also works fine.

Surprisingly, the product’s approved for swimming and sweatin’. Weird, huh? A powder for swimming? The company says it’ll work as long as you reapply after 80 minutes in the water (out of the water, they suggest reapplying every 2 hours).
