A Brown Girl’s Guide to Self-Tanning

April 30th, 2009 by Karen 49 Comments

A Brown Girl's Guide to Self-Tanning

Because El Hub and I are Hawaii-bound in a couple weeks, I busted out the old swimsuit last night and somehow managed to shimmy into it without bursting too many seams (*whew*!).

Of course, I couldn’t resist checking out my bum in the mirror (yes, it was still there)…

And that’s when I noticed just how pale my thighs have gotten. We’re talking five shades lighter than the rest of me.

It gave me an idea.

As someone with a built-in tan, I’ve never had a reason to venture into the world of self-tanners … until now. I’d like to smooth out my skin tone and make everything a similar shade, so I put together some research to aid my cause.

Self-Tanning Resources

  • Is Sunless Tanning a Safe Alternative to Sunbathing? This article from the Mayo Clinic offers a good overview of self-tanning, what it is and isn’t, and what to expect.
  • Sunless Tanning, Step-By-Step: This thorough tutorial covers all the basics from start to finish.
  • How To Remove Self-Tanner Streaks: If things go awry and you end up with tiger stripes, don’t panic! This blog entry describes a solution.
  • Which Self-Tanners Work Best? Here’s a handy rundown of 12 popular self-tanners and bronzers.
  • How Does Self-Tanning Work? Ever wonder how self-tanners work? Here’s an article that breaks down the science behind ’em.

5 Self-Tanning Tips

  • Shave your legs the day before you self-tan. It will exfoliate the top layer of skin, leaving a healthy new layer ready to tan.
  • Exfoliate with a soft cotton washcloth before applying a self-tanning lotion, as rougher nylon and loofah scrubbers can cause streaks.
  • If you’re new to self-tanning, skip the sprays. They can be difficult to apply evenly.
  • To prevent orange staining of your palms, fingers and fingernails, scrub them with a soapy nail brush (or a Wet Ones wipe) every 5 minutes while you’re self-tanning.
  • If you’re using self-tanner on your legs, don’t forget to include your ankles and the tops of your feet. 🙂

Jergens Natural Glow Express

jergens-natural-glow-final

Jergens Natural Glow Express ($9) is a favorite among beauty bloggers and magazine editors for its natural tan. It’s supposed to be easy to use, available at drugstores nationwide, and I like the price point, too.

I’m betting a few of you gals are seasoned self-tanners. Do you have any tips?

Karen

Do You Use Special Skin Care for “The Girls”?

April 14th, 2009 by Karen 23 Comments

clarins bust beauty
The more closely I look at Clarins, the more fascinated I become. Did you know their skin care line includes products designed to keep “the girls” firm?

The products are called Bust Beauty, and Clarins claims that both Bust Beauty Extra-Lift Gel ($58) and Bust Beauty Firming Lotion ($54) will “firm, tone and strengthen the delicate skin of the bust and decollete.”

I know I’ve mentioned that pesky white hair in my left eyebrow… Well, I’ve noticed other things ch-ch-ch-changing, too — some of them succumbing to GRAVITY.

Honestly, it was like one day I looked in the mirror and BAM! — there they were, kinda sad and droopy like a clown in a ’70s velvet painting, LOL!

I think I’m good about taking care of my breasts in other ways (PSA: please do your monthly breast self-exams, ladies!), but taking steps to keep them perky? — not so much.

What do you think about skin care products for your bust?

Right now I just use my regular body lotion (Johnson’s 24-Hour), but I’d probably roll my pennies for a dedicated beauty product proven to lift and firm.

Karen

Do You Use a Separate Neck Cream?

April 7th, 2009 by Karen 37 Comments

clarins-neck-cream

For years I neglected the skin on my neck. I skipped using SPF and moisturizer on it for most of my life, and I think my neglect has started to show, boo!

Last year, hoping to make up for lost time, I started religiously using moisturizer and sunscreen on my neck, but lately I’ve been wondering if a special, targeted uber-neck cream would work better than regular ol’ moisturizer.

While hella expensive, Clarins makes one that sounds like it’s worth a try: Advanced Extra-Firming Neck Cream ($80).

From the Clarins website:

“The ultimate firming neck treatment that enhances skin’s youthful-looking appearance for women over 40. This targeted treatment helps firm and smooth away lines and wrinkles as it immediately lifts.”

I asked a Clarin’s makeup artist about the cream, and she was totally convinced it worked better than basic moisturizer. Hmm… Part of me wants to believe, but the other half can’t get past the $80 price.

At night, I’ve just been using whatever moisturizer I use on my face, and then during the day wear that same moisturizer beneath a layer of SPF.

What do you gals do to take care of the skin on your neck?

Do you just use your regular moisturizer, or do you think it’s worth investing in a separate neck cream?

Karen

Wednesday, April 1, 2009: WOOT!

So how was your hump day? Earlier today I turned in that paper I’d been working on, so I’m happy that’s off my plate. 🙂

I ended up writing about a recent episode of Terry Gross’s Fresh Air on National Public Radio.

In the episode, Terry interviews Nancy Kay, a veterinarian and the author of Speaking for Spot: Be the Advocate Your Dog Needs to Live a Happy, Longer Life, a book about making sound health care decisions for your pet (cats and dogs).

Clinique Turnaround Body Cream: Turn Around Dry Skin

March 26th, 2009 by Karen 30 Comments

clinique turnaround body cream

When I slather on Clinique’s new Turnaround Body Cream ($28), I feel compelled to belt out Bonnie Tyler’s power ballad, Total Eclipse of the Heart.

“Turn around
Every now and then I get a little bit lonely
And you’re never coming round
Turn around
Every now and then I get a little bit tired
Of listening to the sound of my tears.”

bonnie-tyler

If you were born after 1986, you might be more familiar with Nicki French’s cheesier and less powerful version of the tune.

Either way, stop playing like you don’t know the lyrics because I know you do!

In addition to bringing about weird singing urges, Turnaround Body Cream also hydrates crazy good.

It’s part of a crop of new exfoliating face and body treatments Clinique released earlier this year. Clinique says the cream does double duty, eliminating dryness and reviving dull-looking skin with ingredients like time-released salicylic acid and shea butter.

Have You Tried Avene Skin Care?

March 23rd, 2009 by Karen 51 Comments

avene1

Hi, ladies. I got out of class early today, so I decided to head over to Longs Drugs to pick up a snack — strawberries and some Power-C Vitamin Water, yum! I’m cruising the beauty aisle right now and checking out the exotic-looking lines in the Skin Health Clinic section. I’ve got my eye on some items from Avene. Have you ever used any of their products?

Avene says their skin care line contains special thermal spring water from Avene, France. I read a bunch of reviews on Makeup Alley last night, and several of their lotions, cleansers, anti-aging creams and acne treatments received glowing reviews. I’ve been wanting to try the line but just haven’t gotten around to it.

Most of the items cost between $15-30, which is a lil’ more expensive than typical drugstore skin care products.

Clean and Clear Soft Scrubs Away Skin Trubs

March 19th, 2009 by Karen 22 Comments

makeup tips how to apply makeup mac cosmetics

Happy Thursday, chicas!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about scrubs.

Could it be the TLC I’ve been bumping 24/7 (“A scrub is a guy that thinks he’s fly and is also known as a bustahhh!”)?

Perhaps last Monday’s episode of The City is still lingering on my mind.

Whitney dumps her scrubby boyfriend; the women of the world issue a collective WOOT!

Or maybe it’s my new addiction to Clean & Clear’s Soft Purifying Cleanser Scrub ($7).

A few weeks ago I was getting zilch for sleep and wasn’t drinking enough water, which is usually a recipe for HOT MESS. My forehead broke out, my cheeks felt parched and my skin was looking pretty blotchy.

I picked up a bottle of Clean & Clear Soft Scrub. The product marketing says this oil-free scrub’s combination of gentle exfoliating beads, salicylic acid and white tea anti-oxidants work together to cleanse skin gently without stripping.

Tired of Insomnia? Try Some Lavender Before Bed

March 10th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

makeup blog beauty blog

Gone are the days when I’d get my freak on till 3:00 a.m. at the club.

These days, 3:00 a.m. is when I’d like to be getting my SLEEP on, but some nights I don’t get what I want, and I lay awake in bed, fretting about family, the future, Tabs and bills.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, I’m not the only girl who goes through bouts of insomnia. Seventy-six percent of Americans experience symptoms of sleep disorders on a regular basis, and something tells me it’s not a strictly American problem.

When the zzz’s elude me, I reach for certain fragrances, like lavender, to help me relax.

Here are a couple new scented items from Origins and Crabtree & Evelyn that caught my nose and my dark-circled eye. 🙂
