Guerlain’s New Cuivre Casts Metallurgical Magic on Lids: Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow

April 18th, 2013 by Karen 44 Comments

Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow
Guerlain’s new $35 Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow is coming to counters next month

How do you feel about shiny baubles? Personally, I’m a fan (especially costume stuff).

Guerlain feels pretty good about ’em, too, and their new coppery Cuivre (which means “copper” in French) Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow works like a shiny bauble in some visually arresting ways.

Shiny like a copper keepsake — and intense! — it jazzes up whatever else you’ve got going on, in my case, a simple black eye liner, bronzer and a gloss in peachy gold.

Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow
That’s Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow, Guerlain’s Khol Me Kajal liner and Guerlain Cils D’Enfer Mascara on my eyes

Part of the new 10-piece Terra Ora summer makeup collection, Cuivre quivers on counters next month. 🙂

Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow
Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow is one of two loose shadows in the new Terra Ora collection (the other, Bronze Ora, is a shimmery bronzed brown)

Guerlain’s got serious game when it comes to bronzers and bronzing makeup, so it makes sense that they’d release something like Cuivre.

I really love how it looks with a tan and just the overall liquid metal effect. I think it’s also more intense when I press or glide it directly on my lids with the sponge-tip applicator instead of a separate brush.

Blink, and you see a flash of shimmer, which looks super cool, like sunlight on a polished piece of gold, and you don’t need multiple layers, either. Nope, it’s that pigmented and intense.

When I want to tone it down, I just take a fluffy domed brush like the MAC 217, swipe it against the sponge tip, and buff that on my lids.

Bit of a softer, subtler effect, but with the same shiny finish.

Guerlain Cuivre Ora Loose Powder Eye Shadow
Also wearing Guerlain’s Terra Ora ($72) Bronzer and Terra Nerolia ($69) on my cheeks, two limited edition bronzers from the Terra Ora collection, and Buxom Full-Bodied Lip Gloss in Boo-Ya

Since Cuivre is as shiny and pigmented as it is, I’ll probably keep the rest of my makeup on the quieter side, but if you aren’t afraid to take risks and feel more comfortable when you’re turning heads, you could try something like a bright teal or a green along your lower lash lines, and maybe a bright coral on your lips. 🙂

The Gueralin Terra Ora Summer 2013 collection includes…

  • Terra Ora: a pearly white gold and matte beige to highlight and sculpt the face and decollete ($72, limited edition)
  • Meteorities Perles Les Ors Primer: a sheer illuminating gel primer that adds radiance with three different shades of gold ($71, limited edition)
  • Khol Me Kajal: a black liner that doubles as an eyeshadow ($37, re-promoted from the permanent line)
  • Loose Powder Eye Shadows in Cuivre Ora and Bronze Ora: two loose, iridescent shadows with a metallic finish, available in copper Cuivre Ora and bronze Bronze Ora ($35 each, limited edition)
  • Terra Nerolia: an oversized face and body bronzer in shimmery peach, bronze and gold shades ($69, limited edition)
  • Shine Automatique in Corail Ora and Bianca Ora: a warm coral lipstick and a semi-transparent white gold lipstick, each with a luminous finish ($35 each, limited edition)
  • Lingerie de Peau BB Cream, SPF 30: a color-correcting, hydrating primer with a lightweight formula ($51, repromoted from the permanent line)
  • Terra Ora Kabuki Brush: a dense brush designed for the Guerlain bronzing powders ($55, limited edition)

That would almost like runway makeup! Put your hair up in a ponytail or bun, and keep the rest of your accessories and clothes simple.

YES!

The price might sound high for just 0.02 ounces, but I don’t think you’ll have to use a lot. Plus, I haven’t had any issues with creasing or fallout, and it lasts all day long.

Best for: Bronzed babes who love shiny, metallic eyes.

PRICE: $35 for a 0.02-ounce tube with a sponge-tip applicator (seems like a lot for such a tiny amount, but you hardly need any at all)
AVAILABILITY: Coming May to Guerlain counters and online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A

Since we’re on the subject…

Question for you: have you ever gone through a phase where you only wanted to wear one kind of metal, like when I was in my 20s, I was all about silver baubles, but now I’m starting to also look at gold.

Lately, especially rose gold. I guess I never realized how much I’d like the way the pink in it looks on brown skin.

I still love silver, though, and sometimes I’ll even mix it with something gold. Together, I think they’re modern and chic!

Karen

    Hi Kristina,

YEAH IT IS. Don’t you love how their makeup is just so beautiful and elegant? I also dig the extra touches, like the scents. What Guerlain products are your must-haves? Right now I’m LOVING on the new nail polishes, and this eye shadow, of course. 🙂

      Completely elegant!
I adore their packaging/cases and how they present their products. Yay built in mirrors! Lately, I really like the loose powder kohl liner 😀 I’m excited to see the rest of the summer collection. This eyeshadow is crazy good

I’ve heard GREAT things about that loose Kohl! I must try it one of these days. I tested out the pencil kohl today… the pointy tip’s a little cray, but it’s fun.

Have you ever used any of their body bronzing products? They have this leg spray bronzer that I use on my thighs (they never see the light of day any more, haha!).

Yes!! When I was a teen, i insisted on only wearing silver and i think because my grandmother swore by her gold jewelry so i thought gold was for mature women. I was so dumb. It wasnt till a sales associate at m.a.c told me gold would flatter my skin tone better and since then ive worn way more gold than silver. Although i haven’t gotten into rose gold, gunmetal is another metal i adore

      Hi C’enna,

I think that’s one of the reasons why I never wore gold, too. My mom and all my aunties all wore it! But now I’m one of them too. 🙂

Omg, I love this so much on you Karen! Gold tones with a strong orange undertone is not easy to wear for every one but on you it looks amazing! I’m getting such a summery vibe from it, orange, gold, metallic, looove!

Love, love, love copper on the eyes. Even though I’m no where near bronzed it works really well on my green eyes.

I used to pretty much only wear silver, too. Now I wear whatever is going to complement my clothes best.

Oh yeah, Ms Amber and I go waaay back! That and Crystal were the first two MAC shadows I fell in love with.

My current copper shadow obsession is Laura Mercier’s Gilded Rosegold.

Yup, this is the one! It’s SO good. SO, so good. Seriously, it’ll be perfect for your new crop of greens and teals.

The lipgloss looks beautiful! I ran into Walgreens really quick to get some vanilla ice cream hubby wanted and I bought two Maybelline lipglosses that were on sale from LE and one of the summer edition Loreal Infallible eyeshadows in beautiful peach color. There was a teal one too but I stopped myself 🙂 I watched the new episode of Tabatha Takes Over and went to bed early around 10:30pm.

I just bought this eyeshadow in the more bronze-taupe shade, as well as the BB cream, today, and I’m IN LOVE. The eyeshadow is amazingly soft and pigmented, and makes for such a smokey, sultry look. And the BB cream is pigmented and illuminating, and it actually works well with my skin tone (usually I’m between shades). Sigh…love Guerlain 🙂

It is just stunning! I went to the Bergdorf counter in NYC for a little retail therapy, and the makeup artist who applied it (who I always go to for Guerlain, she’s absolutely the best MA I’ve ever encountered) used it all over the lid, then added some of the pinky highlight shade in the Rue de Passy 6-color compact in the inner corners, and the right-most taupey shade from the Bois de Rose 4-color quad in the creases. She blended it all together with her amazingly skilled hand, lined my eyes with a black powder, and did the waterlines with the new Kohl Me Kajal. And mascara, of course! I had to take pictures – it was absolutely amazing! I’ll see if I can recreate any of that on my own 🙂

Finishing touches – the new BB cream (my skin is not perfect, but that plus meteorites provided amazing, natural coverage), Terracotta 4 Seasons bronzer in 00 as blush/bronzer, and one of the new glosses – a coral-pinkish one, not too pigmented, don’t remember the name – over a neutral pink liner.

        I died. I was in heaven 🙂

I adore Guerlain’s bronzers, I actually use the terra cotta bronzer #7. Its the only bronzer that doesn’t make my skin look muddy. You look so beautiful in the last photo! As for metals, I love white gold! It just looks simple and understated but beautiful against my skin tone.

I am very, very tempted by this! It is just lovely and looks great on you. In my early 30s, I wore no makeup but lipstick and went through a serious phase of complete commitment to Gabriel’s metallic Aurora lipstick (usually with a brown liner). It’s silver but has a hint of copper, as I read it. Just found it in the bottom of my stash a few days ago and was reminded that it is the BEST metallic lipstick EVER. And all natch, no animal testing! (You can get it at Whole Foods.) The pic doesn’t do it justice, but here it is anyway: http://www.gabrielcosmeticsinc.com/index.cfm/product/8_8/gabriel-lipstick-gluten-free.cfm

Love it! Even now, my go-to eye shadow when I’m running late and need to get out the door is Half-Baked by Urban Decay. It’s a little more golden as opposed to a bronze-y copper, but it really suits my skin coloring 🙂

This is gorgeous on you – plus, you’re a blending wizard. It’s bold but subtle at the same time. Really, really nice!

I used to only wear gold when I was in my teens and early 20s. Now I’m much more of a platinum/diamond person. By which I mean my engagement/wedding rings and diamond stud earrings. I’m not bejeweled by any means. My watch is silver/gold combo, just in case. 🙂

I only wear silver jewelry, since I dislike gold jewelry. (Not a fan of rose gold, either.) I’m cool-toned, and I look sickly whenever I wear gold — perhaps that’s why I don’t like it.
