Length for Days! The New L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

November 25th, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Wearing the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara ($8.99) in Blackest Black

Tonight I find myself pondering imponderable things…

Like, does the flapping of a butterfly’s wings affect the sway of a husky tabby’s tum halfway around the world?

Or, if I were to wear L’oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara and bat my lashes at the guy making my hot cocoa at Starbucks (being generous with the whipped cream earns you good karma points!), does that alter the sway of tabby tums everywhere?

These are the profound profundities (not really) that passed through one cat lady’s mind as she wore the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara today ($8.99). 🙂

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Pretty packaging

It’s all about the (asymmetrical) brush, man!

It’s pretty neat… It looks a little like a comb, doesn’t it? With the longer bristles on one side and shorter ones on the other?

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Side view of the brush…

You just line up the side with the longer bristles at the outer corners of your lash line (side closer to your ear), and pull the brush through your lashes from root to tip. Being asymmetrical is supposed to help the brush thicken your lashes at the roots and really flare those outer lashes.

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Another view of the brush…

I’ve been using it since late last week and, ya know, I like it. In terms of thickness, lift, separation and curl hold, I don’t think it’s quite up there with Clarins Be Long mascara, but the brush really does seem to lengthen those outer lashes. Mine do look longer and more winged-out to me.

I bet this mascara would look really great with cat eye liner or any eye looks with lifted, elongated outer corners.

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Wearing two coats of Butterfly on my upper lashes…

As for my lower lashes, well, when I line up the brush’s longer bristles to do them, the brush feels a little awkward. Something about the longer bristles, I guess… I’ve tried it a whole mess of times, but I haven’t been able to get it right, so for my lower lash lashes, I’ve been flipping the brush over and using the shorter bristles instead.

Ultimately, I think what we have here is a straight-up lengthening mascara.

A great one as far as length — plus, no flaking, smudging or clumping, and it washes right off with soap and water — but it doesn’t deliver the kind of volume (like Chanel Le Volume or YSL Faux Cils) and/or extreme curl hold and separation (Clarins Be Long) I usually crave.

It’s a solid drugstore mascara, but one I don’t feel compelled to stockpile/hoard.

Now, if you mostly care about lash length, especially at the outer corners, that’s where Voluminous Butterfly Mascara shines.

It’s available now in three shades — Black, Black Brown and Blackest Black — at drugstores, grocery stores, Ulta and online.

PRICE: $8.99

Funny to see how this changed a little. It realeased it My country a couple of months ago with a slightly different name and a slightly different price. I finished my tube already. Loved it for long and separated lashes.

I don’t like gimmicky mascara brushes. Pity, because I’m looking for a drugstore mascara to replace my Loreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara as my only gym mascara (only gym piece of makeup at that LOL.)
Not much drama, solid curl and absolutely bulletproof in the smudge department is what I’m looking for. The search continues.
(For all non-gym purposes I use a plethora of high end mascaras. They are not gym proof, though).

It looks like a nice lengthening mascara but it definitely needs more volume. It just looks “meh”.

Thanks for posting this review. Right now the voluminous million lashes is my fav and it saw this and wanted to try because I use the other mascara for my long shifts at work. But I’m having a problem of getting mascara all over if I place them on my lower lashes

I like that it grabs the outer lashes, and that the nifty bristles keep lashes separated. I’ve been enjoying it so far, but I’m not sure I would repurchase it yet.

My eyelashes are extremely straight, I have to curl them. So, I have a little problems finding the right mascara that wouldn’t undo the curl. I have been advised by the cosmetic counter ladies to use a “waterproof mascara”

I don’t hate it, definitely not, but I don’t love it either. And with me having a lot of mascara back ups already, that is enough to make me say ‘pass!’ 🙂

I like how it looks on you, but I prefer mascaras that provide more volume.

The other Volumnious mascaras don’t like me, so I’ll pass. I’m hooked on Le Volume right now – need those big, bad lashes!

I don’t personally love loreal mascaras, its not that its bad quality, I just love covergirl mascara more than anything, (not more than backstreet boys) but its pretty close. I only wear mascara now so I HAVE to find good ones and this one ranks pretty high on my list. I tried it out after reading this post, so thanks!!!!

The packaging is very pretty .. but I’m not a fan of Loreal mascara’s .. I’ll give it a try if it goes on sale, perhaps.

    Hi Karen!
I am new here but I like the way you present your blog and all the stuff (most makeup stuff) you post here. It’s not very common to keep a good blog since everyone is opening a youtube channel (I know you have one too. :P).
My lashes are thick but not long, and not easy to curl. I used to like Lancome mascara cuz they hold the curl pretty well. But I have been loving this one ever since I accidentally picked it up in Kroger. I think this one gives a better volume and doesn’t dry out too fast ( like Lancome). I am very happy you had a chance to use it and review it.
However, I am afraid it’s not very fair to compare it with YSL cuz YSL is like 3 times more expensive? I am wondering when you give grade on products, do you take the price into consideration?? It might deserve a B+ if you think about the price. 😛
Anyway, thank you so much for keeping this blog.
    Have a nice Thursday!
