Unsung Heroes: Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour in Gold

November 23rd, 2012 by Karen 26 Comments

Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour in Gold on my eyes

On super busy days (ahem, like the first time you host Thanksgiving dinner at your house), getting an extra five minutes to put on some makeup in the morning can mean the difference between success and a nervous breakdown.

Those 300 critical seconds could end up saving someone from being shanked with a butter knife, and preventing me from spontaneously transforming into a brains-craving zombie.

To take absolute advantage of those vital minutes of life-saving meow time, there’s Laura Mercier’s $22 Metallic Creme Eye Colour in Gold, a shimmery cream shadow capable of overcoming a number of makeup and beauty challenges like…

Problem: Totally tired eyes.
Solution: Let’s not even go there about my insomnia issues and the 50 shades of purple I’ve been waking up with under my eyes. This cream shadow’s softly golden finish glows like a tropical vacation in a tube. Wearing it I feel like I look relaxed and well rested, almost like I just woke up from a three-day power nap (I WISH).

Problem: No time for brushes.
Solution: Gold’s as quick and easy to use as pecan pie is to love (my favorite, BTW — much more than pumpkin). I pat and blend a small amount on my lids with a finger. Takes all but 60 seconds.

Problem: Getting the look of effortless eyes.
Solution: Easy like Sunday morning, Gold highlights eyes with a whisper, versus a SHOUT. But you still look like you’re wearing something, making it a great choice for busy mornings, brunches and first dates (among other events).

Best of all, it doesn’t lean too warm or cold; great news for a wide range of skin tones.

I’ll often wear Gold without a primer (it depends on how many of those precious 300 seconds I have left when I get to it), and when I do, it lasts between 7-8 hours on my combination dry/oily lids without creasing or fading.

If your lids are extremely oily, a primer should help extend Gold’s wear time. I really like NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.

The Unsung Heroes series, a long-running series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog, features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of brands.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Shoot, I just realized that I forgot something I always do. I forgot to wish you a happy Friday this morning and say…

TGIF!

      Hi Sunny,

Thanks for noticing. I used Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone:

I’ve started playing around with cream shadows but I can’t apply them evenly. I try to smooth them with my fingers and buff them with blending brushes, but no dice. Any tips?

      Hi Steph,

Which cream shadow are you using? Have you tried wearing a primer?

Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving, btw.

I have a Benefit and a MUFE. They both go on unevenly if I try more than the sheerest wash. I never skip my NARS primer — that stuff is magic.

Karen, you make the Laura Mercier cream eyeshadows sound absolutely amazing. I’ve been meaning to check them out since you reviewed Alloy, but the swatches just keep getting better and better! I love the shimmering neutral tones in this one 🙂

      Hi Rae,

Alloy is my jam, girl! I hope you give it (and this shade, too) a try soon.

      Have a great weekend!

I have this one in burnished copper. It’s very nice but I still favor my MUFE aqua creams a little more.

Ahh, Burnished Copper. One of my favorite colors!

Karen, how’d ya know I’ve been looking for an eyeshadow in a shade like this? I’m much too klutzy to apply more than one shade & have smallish eyes anyway so I never wear any eyeshadow, but I’ve been wanting to find a neutral single shade to try. I’m just tired of having “plain” eyelids! This looks like it would be a good one to start with. Thanks!

Karen, I’m there with ya gf! Platinum and alloy are my jams, with burnished copper if smoke is needed. Guess I’ll have to try gold now!

You look beautiful and well rested….I think as soon as I can get to Sephora I will be checking out Laura Mercier. I like cream shadows for how easy they are to apply without a lot of equipment, but I don’t always like how long that they can take to set (depending on the shadow’s brand). As for tips to getting them to apply evenly, I find when the shadow is warm instead of ice cold, they go on better. I warm up the container by rubbing it in between my hands or holding it under warm water (closed of course).

This is a lovely shade Karen. Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 hr eye shadow in ‘Bad to the Bronze’ is very similar!

Alloy is my mostest, mostest fave LM cream shadow, but Gold is a darn close second!! I had a sample of Gold from Sephora that lasted months b/c it takes so little for such a beautiful, lit-up, sunny simple eye. A full tube of Gold is going on my wants list. Thanks for reminding me about this lil gem, Karen! Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend! 🙂

Karen, you look beautiful! (as always!) I will check out the Laura Mercier Metallic Eye Creme in this Gold color the next time I am in a cosmetics store. I sometime use UD’s shadow pencil, in Sin, a pale pinky shade, which does perform better with a base. I use Mally’s base, which I love, although my daughter uses UD’s. I also have Clinique Lid Smoothies in Pinkgo Biloba & Impromt-Blue. I want to get Bit O’Honey, a pale cream color, eventually. Loved seeing your T-day spread, looked delicious!

This looks so gorgeous on you! What I really think though, is that your hair is amazing! It’s like Farrah Fawcett’s, just not as big but like a sleeker, more modern version! xoxo

I know what you are saying about not having time for brushes and agree that we can get an ok result without it, but I am still a believer that using the appropriate brush makes a huge difference!
