Flower Power!

December 19th, 2010 by Karen 5 Comments

This flower in the biome at the California Academy of Sciences caught my eye on Friday.

Unfortunately I forgot to check the label so I don’t know the name. I’m tempted to say it’s an orchid, but I think it might be some sort of pitcher plant. Really, I have no clue.

Are there any botany enthusiasts in the house who happen to know?

    Hello Karen!

I’ve been reading your blog all the way from Brussels for quite some time already but only today I felt like commenting. The truth is although not really an expert in make up (but following your blog in order to get some inspiration – which led me to buy the Dallas blusher!) I actually know the name of this flower: your suspection was right, it is an orchid (Paphiopedilum sp). No, I am not a botanic enthusiast like you said by I am Portuguese. And we do have a lot of these flowers coming from the Madeira island, hence the “wisdom”. In Portuguese we call them “sapatinho”, which means “little shoe”, as the lobule of some of this flowers make you think about a hanging slipper 🙂
