“Take a Deep Breath,” Said the Epiphyte

On the bottom floor of the Seed Bank in Petaluma, that huge, awesome gardening store I talked about last weekend, is a humid, brightly lighted room filled with these things called air plants, also known as epiphytes.

The air plant 411…

I could’ve spent at least an hour in there, during which time I probably would have gotten a tan from the bright overhead lights!

There were so many cool air plants in there I’d never even seen before. Most of the ones at the Seed Bank obtain moisture from the air or from dampness on the surface of their host plants, or wherever they’ve attached themselves.

Do you have any air plants? I don’t, but I’m thinking that’s probably going to change soon because I can’t stop thinking about them, LOL!

I think I’d like to get one for my office.

I can’t remember the name of this one… Looks like it commandeered a shell!
Now that’s a lot of air plants!

Oh how nice, Tiffany! What kind of flowers did you get?

These are so neat! I vaguely remember seeing some at a farmers market years ago, but I love the look of the varieties you found. I wonder just how easy they are to care for…my thumb isn’t so green.

They’re supposed to be really easy. I think even easier than cactus (which I always seem to kill, for some reason).

I have a bromeliad and they do well! (we have a plant light too). We love it so much that my boyfriend is getting more bromeliads and plants and setting them up in an empty aquarium we have! 🙂 We’re thinking about getting a little frog for it too 😀

Hi Nik! That sounds like a fun project. Where did you get your plant light, btw?

We use the residual light from our Aero Garden 😀 We need a plant light because natural light in our kitchen is super low. But Lowes or Home Depot should have a good variety! I noticed in one of the pics above they used a plant light, if you decide to stop in to that same store, maybe they’ll give you some tips on suitable lighting for the plants you decide upon! 🙂

Love those little flowers! Such pretty colours 🙂 Air plants are pretty awesome anyway, though!

I’ve seen these in store and was amazed they could just sit on shelves, pot-less, soil-less, and beautiful! I would like a purple flower from the Purple & Pink FTW photo. They also seem less messy than potted plants. I’d love one on my desk, it’ll make me feel like I’m in some ancient mystic cave study room as opposed to just me in sweatpants sitting in my living room with construction drilling down the streets.

Those guys look cool. The one in the shell looks like some kind of neat snail!

I’ve wanted to get some of these but I can tell you my cat would eat them all up… I can’t have plants in the house at all.
