Can’t Find a Hair Elastic When You Need One? Try This Improv Hair Idea

October 11th, 2012 by Karen 27 Comments

Why is it that whenever I need one of those black rubber hair elastics I can never, ever find one, but when I don’t need one they’re all over the place? — on the carpet, in my pockets, around my wrist, on my desk.

It’s like one of those unstated laws of the universe…

Happened to me yesterday as I was taking pics. My hair, which was down, started working my nerves; it’s at that stage where it’s a little too long and shaggy to just wash and wear down.

I only had minutes of good light left as the sun went down but couldn’t find an elastic to put my hair up in a ponytail, so I twisted it up in a bun and grabbed the closest long, pointy thing I could find, which happened to be a Shu Uemura Fan Brush.

Lo and behold, instant improv hair! 🙂

Yay! I’m definitely doing this one again. The brush head almost looks like a flower.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I worked at Shiseido and they taught me how to do this with just about anything. I’ve done it with pens, pencils, brushes, hair sticks… you name it! Lovely!

How is this even possible?? I don’t think I was ever able to do that when I had shorter hair. Now I have waist length hair so I definitely know its not even in the realm of possibility.

How much as I love it, this would never work for me. It would just slide of my hair. But it looks super on you! 😀

Awesome! I’ll often do the same thing with a pencil, but this is a much cuter idea.

I used to do this with colored pencils all the time when I was in middle school (though I got made fun of for that). Pretty! My hair is definitely not thick enough for this to work though!

I can’t say I have every tried this but I recently ties my hair in an actual know like tying a shoelace together. I had to get it off my neck and no hair ties were around so I made a knot and surprisingly it stayed put for a while!

I’m surprised you can do this so well with your short hair! Looks great though! I can never get mine to a.) look good or b.) stay. My hair is too slippery I think so it always goes loose within about 10 minutes unless I do it REALLY tight, but that always gives me a headache :/

That’s such an adorable idea! And WHERE do those hair ties go, huh? You buy a pack & little by little, they disappear. And are never found again. What gives.

How in the heck do you twist it up so it stays in? I have long hair and can never for the life of me get it to stay in a bun, let alone stay with a stick/chopstick/pencil.

My cat, Lauren Bacall, steals my hairbands and plays with them…. She also brings them to me and we play fetch with them. (Yes, she really does play fetch. Her brother, Humphrey Bogart, is too lazy to play fetch. Tabs face also looks quite similar to HB, but Tabs lacks HB’s chocolate milk mustache.)

You are so sassy. 🙂 I think you need to do a tutorial for those of us that are hair-challenged, though. You would have loved to have seen me just try that with a pen. Not successful. At all. HAHA!

I’ve been watching Copper on BBC. It’s pretty good. You’d think with the NHL locked out, I’d have some more TV time. The only other thing I watch regularly is Castle. ‘Cause, well, you know. 🙂

I’m constantly losing my hair elastics too! My friend taught me a similar bun trick once back in school. We used pens instead! 😀
