Have You Ever Cut Your Own Hair?

June 18th, 2013 by Karen 23 Comments

Note to the young people of the world! You probably don’t want to cut your own hair and then take pics… (me, circa 1990)

Yes, I have cut my own hair, and yes, it was disastrous.

During the darkest period of my hair bear days, a friend told me that she cut her own bangs, and she made it sound really, really easy. “Just cut different pieces unevenly from your bangs. Do it! You’ll love it!”

Um…

The reason for the uneven pieces was that when you pumped up your hair with hairspray, a curling iron and a blow dryer to get it to stand up, the choppiness would better recreate the appearance of a wall of hair cresting like a huge wave.

The higher, the better, of course. 🙂

I grabbed a pair of scissors from the kitchen and went to town, cutting random pieces of different lengths from my bangs. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to it, just chop, chop, chop.

By the time I finished, my head looked awful, because my hair was also very wavy at the time, and when you cut wavy hair without any regard for the curl pattern, you end up with a hot mess.

Things got a little better when I pumped it up, which disguised the choppiness somewhat, and I really did end up with something resembling the look I wanted of a wave cresting on my head.

I don’t know… It was still pretty terrible, especially when I’d let it air dry and do it’s own thing. I looked like a reject from The Muppet Show.

How about you? Have you ever cut your own hair?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Yes! In fact, I just cut it yesterday. Out of the many plus years of visiting salons across the USA, I can count on my hand how many times I have actually liked a cut. I figure why not cut it myself and save me money. My husband says I do a better job anyway, so either he really likes my hair or likes the money saving part. lol I do remember the big hair. My kids laugh pictures of me with high rocker hair.

Yes, unfortunately! I hadn’t cut it in way too long because I always have trust issues with hairstylists and ended up going in the bathroom and chopping off my hair with kitchen scissors. I had to wear it curly to disguise it, haha.

That’s a rough picture up there! Ouch! 🙂

Oh yes I’ve cut my hair a few times in college. I trimmed my bangs and the eagles wings by my ears. I did a pretty good job most of the time but did it because I was poor!

For two years, I cut my own hair with the Crea Clip.
Already have saved a lot of money and my hair is finally how I like.
    Fortunately I had a good experience 🙂

When I kept my hair short, I cut it myself. This went on for a couple years…so much easier than visiting the salon every 4 weeks! Now that I’ve grown it out, I hope to learn how to do it at this length too 🙂

I trim my own hair regularly. My style isn’t complicated, just long and straight with a bit of layering at the ends. It’s a pretty easy cut to maintain at home and faster/more convenient than going to a salon. If I wanted to change to a different cut or have any color treatment I would leave that to a pro.

Yes! I started cutting my bangs in high school and they were a HOT MESS! way too short, always uneven. Since then, I’ve gotten much better at it and can now manage my bangs AND cut off split ends when I’m too lazy to hit the salon (thanks, YouTube!)

YES YES and YES. One time I cut my fringe super short because I over waxed my eyebrow -_____- Actually,my FRIEND cut it but the ruined it and then said it was me who cut it instead of her! *shakes head*

BUT, the most recent would have to be about a month ago when I had a lovely little pimple fringe smack bang in between my eyebrows which made me look ridiculous so half an hour before I went to work, I decided to cut myself a fringe which resulted in me looking even worse! You’d think I’d learn my lesson after all those hair cutting incidents back in high school!

Okay, back to sleep! It’s 5:54AM Sydney time and I’ve been awake since 3:30AM -_____- Have you’re having a lovely day, Karen! <3<3

YES!! I have waist length wavy hair & most salons think “a trim” is taking it back up to shoulder length (shudder!). I microtrim the ends (basically you’re just snipping out the splits) & also do my own side bangs. Once a year or so I go in for a proper style.

I never have – perk of growing up with a mom who went to beauty school. Let me tell you, those skills are NOT inherited; I can barely work a blow dryer. Mom had me help her cut her own hair once and I misinterpreted how long an inch was… she never let me near the scissors after that.

YES! 🙂 I’ve actually never gone to a hair salon before… When I was little my mother would cut it for me. And then as I got a little older, being the girly girl diva I am, noticed she didn’t do such a great job at it. So I started cutting it myself. And here we are today at 19 still cutting my own hair, lol 🙂

I’m not sure if this counts, but hours before my winter sorority party I felt the urge to do something to my hair. My mom was harping at me to get it trimmed and everybody else was getting their hair “layered.” I had no clue what layering was and when I asked a friend, she said that one effect of layering is that if you put your hair in a ponytail the ends will be flat. So I figured, why not kill two birds with one stone and get the ‘layered’ effect backwards? I dressed for the party and half an hour before I was supposed to leave, I put my hair in a ponytail and forced my roommates to cut the end of the ponytail so that the ends will be flat. Needless to say, it was disastrous; but the best part was that I was cracking up while my roommates were frantically trying to repair the damage I forced them to do to my hair. Ah, good times…

Once when I was 10 and what a disaster it was! But I have bangs right now and might trim them. I need to watch a few tutorials this time though!

    Hi Karen.
Yes I did it regularly before when I just had it superlong and straight, no layering. Then I’d just flick it to the front and trim it – easy peacy.

Now that my hair is shorter(still long tho ^^) with layering and some curls I didn’t knew I had – NEVER! I have FINALY found a stylist I trust with my hair after some catastrophic cuts in the past (in my quest to find a good stylist who work with the curls and not against them…)

Oh, yes, in a story that’s eerily similar to yours. Also, very thankful for the sky-high, back-combed bangs at that time. Though a sin themselves, they also masked many other, worse sins. HAHA! Even years later in college, I would occasionally (badly) trim my bangs and always regretted it. I’m also looking at a pic of my boys when they were about 3. I had trimmed their bangs for the first and last time. They could probably have done as well with some safety scissors and no mirror. Poor little birds. 🙂

I’ve cut my hair loads of times, sometimes I like it, most of the time I hate it and at one point I got addicted to trimming my bangs. It was a dark time for me too. HAHA

I’m 20, junior in college, and I recently started doing this. Actually it started when I was loopy from food poisoning and decided to try copying my favorite actress’ hair (Krysta Rodriguez). If you Google pictures of her, you’ll see how amazing it is that I didn’t ruin my hair trying- but somehow I didn’t. I trim it every five weeks or so; there’s a bit of trial and error, but my hair is slightly wavy and thus more forgiving. A professional hairstylist friend couldn’t tell it was DIY, so I call that success.

I’ve been cutting my own hair for years. I haven’t had a cut in a salon in about 10 years. Even in high end salons, they never cut it the way I want and they always cut it too short. I’ve had maybe two great haircuts in my entire life. So, I learned to layer it and cut long side bangs myself, and I get tons of compliments on it, so I guess I’m doing ok!

I had bright pink hair in high school and wanted it shorter, so I put it up in a loose ponytail and cut that off. I then ended up taking a razor and razoring the ends so it looked choppier. It’s still my favorite hair cut to date.
