What Are Your Biggest Personal Hair Pet Peeves?

August 16th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

Thank goodness for hats on crazy hair days!

Even though my mane is currently under moderate control, and even though I’m relatively happy with my ‘do right now, I’m going to work under the assumption that there will still be days when it goes crazy…because cray hair days are inevitable. And even though I’m relatively content with my coif today, I still have my personal hair pet peeves.

In no particular order…

  • I have a widow’s peak, and I have NO control over baby hairs in it. Absolutely none! They do what they want, whenever they want to, and I can only get them to submit to my will if I use a round brush, a hairdryer, elbow grease and A LOT of styling products.

It’s work, and even when I go through the effort to tame them, those baby hairs still end up sticking up every which way.

  • So, I have wavy hair, and the curl pattern is tighter on my right side than it is on my left… On more than one occasion when new people have cut my hair, I’ve ended up with a lopsided ‘do that looked like I was trying to do a cool Salt ‘N’ Pepa style from the ’80s but failed miserably.

    Sigh!

  • The bangs on the left side of my head always poof up and never lie quite right on their own, so I always have to use a heat styler to get them to fall the way I want them to.

    ‘Tis annoying.

  • Dandruff…

It’s annoying, and it ain’t cute, but I get it on occasion. (It’s the worst when the seasons are changing and my scalp goes nuts.)

How about you? Do you have any personal hair pet peeves?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Overall my hair is good. It can hold a style for a long time. My hair is curly and I try to keep it above shoulder length. My biggest complaint is that since gong through menopause and now heading into post-menopause, it is extremely dry, sometimes brittle. I usually wash it twice a week, but since I swim several times a week in the summer, I wash it more often. Most hydrating shampoos do a decent job and I air-dry in the summer. That pretty much covers it.

    Be well!

Oh I have one – a large cowlick in back that runs from the crown half-way to my neck! To cover it, I have to back-comb, spray lightly brush over; if I want it to hold for any length of time, I go in there with dry shampoo, plus root lifter/back-comb/spray. It’s the bane of my existence.

I have a cowlick on my right forehead but my hair falls after decades of styling that way UNLESS, my bangs are cut short then they part … right there!!

My hair is fine, so it looks stringy and unkept often, and to make matters worse, I have a slight kink to my hair that no product can keep in a curl but instead help it frizz to the end of the earth…

Last year I moved in with my BF and he failed to tell me he had hard water so for 6 months I tortured my hair with a curling iron after using hard water… that lead to lots of breakage and fraying so this summer I had 4 inches cut off, got a water softener and am babying my hair… minimal styling irons, creams, treatments, etc…

I’d love to have a long mane of curls…

Ugh I feel your pain! I have fine hair too that’s kinky, and during the summer it’s impossible to keep it straight but it’s also impossible for it to hold a curl, so it’s just a mess! Humidity is not my friend haha

How much time do you have? Kidding. Sorta. I think my hair from mid-shaft down is mostly good. Spiral curl pattern that’s nicely defined with a bit of curl spray. But the top is always a challenge. I have 2 cowlicks in my bangs which, if left to their devices, would give me a nice, bare oval in the center of my forehead. And my hair is pretty fine so it has a tendency to be flat. I normally gel and blow dry my bangs and crown, then let the rest air dry (with some curl spray and scrunch when dry). I use Pureology volumizing shampoo and I’d classify it as a gentle cleanser. Every few days I need to use something a little more aggressive from mid-shaft to ends. Otherwise product build up weighs it down and it looks lifeless. Like today, unfortunately!!

Hair loss. It’s devastating. I have a head of huge thick curly hair, and now I have bald spots on the top of my head and it makes me sick to look at them. I’m on a number of medications and have an autoimmune disease so it could be happening for any number of reasons. The dermatologist said that I have a bit of “alopecia areata” which is autoimmune, and some of it looks like it’s genetic. I don’t know of any females in my family who started losing hair until they reached old age. I tried a topical that the dermatologist sold me but all it did was dry out and irritate my scalp. So now she gives me very painful shots & said that what I’m going through is temporary. It sure doesn’t feel like it. I also use this stuff called Grow Gorgeous that I got on sale at Ulta but I don’t know if it’s doing anything.

Gray hair! It’s not a lovely silver but off-white like dirty snow, and it’s a completely different texture than the dark hair I still have. Also, I don’t have a cool streak nor is it gray all over – I have patches! It looks like a brindle dog – white patches, dark patches, and some areas combined. The gray hair is extremely dye resistant and very coarse. The upside? The gray hairs are very strong and don’t split.
Also a big honkin cowlick right in the middle front, so if I don’t attack with heat tools and product while it’s still wet I get a nice Orville Redenbacher middle-parted poof. Not the best look for a long face and high forehead.
Funky curl pattern – nape is curly, sides are wavy, top and front are straight. So if I air-dry it looks like I just woke up from a very bad dream.
And, of course, frizz. On humid days it looks and feels like dead grass, and puffs out at the bottom to make a lovely triangle around my head.
Honorable mention to my hair’s ability to instantly, without warning, go from “still okay for a another day or two” to “flat and greasy”. This usually happens about an hour after I decide I don’t need to wash it today and therefore dress, style hair, apply makeup and leave the house.

Late to the party, but I have (had) black hair and I hated that my grays came in a sort of yellowish tone. I have been using the Aveda black malva conditioner (not the shampoo) one a week and it really made the gray a lot nicer, more silvery, and gave my black hair a little bit of oomph as well without looking dyed (or so I tell myself.) Maybe worth a try?

Mostly for me, it’s the cowlick directly in the middle of my hairline along my forehead (no bangs for me) and frizz during the winter. I think it’s hair shock; it’s such super-high humidity most of the year, then the humidity bottoms out for about 3 months. My hair is like “where’s the moisture?!?!”.
And I do have quite a bit of hair, which sometimes can be a pain. There are some styles I just cannot wear, like a chin-length bob. I have a big triangle-head and look like Dora the Explorer.

    Hi Karen,
I have fine hair, which is always a challenge. The past few years, it’s been thinning and since my hair is dark is makes it more obvious. My mother had the same issue and a dermatologist said it’s heredity. I’ve been using HairMax for a few months and take Viviscal. Not sure either is helping, but it might be worse without them.

By the way, what is the green eye shadow you are wearing? Love the color.

aging hair. I took my thick, unruly hair for granted and now I have old lady hair. I love the silver and grey but I am still not used to the delicate, fine, dry hair that is the new me. on the upside, it’s most definitely easier to manage than my youthful locks!

I have the same issues with my widow’s peak. Ugh. My main pet peeve is that my hair is super-straight and fine. It lacks volume. Barrettes and hair clips want to slide out of it.

It’s also extremely resistant to curling, regardless of product or tools used. Stylists pooh-pooh me when I tell them that, only to use all their tricks and have the style fall out ten minutes later. They all tell me they’ve never seen anything like it.

Same with stylists trying to curl my hair! It doesn’t work.

I got a compliment on my hair today, so I’m feeling pretty good! However my hair gets greasy fast, plus I’m a sweater, so I wash my hair nearly every day. It’s fine and doesn’t hold a curl at all, or like to stay in any kind of style so I almost always wear it down.

The color is naturally red, but sometimes I wish it was a little more vibrant. But overall, my hair is pretty healthy and easy to take care of.

Frizz. No matter what I do, no matter how regular I get my hair cut, the last 5 cm are always frizzy.

    My hair grows CRAZY fast.
Plenty of people are jealous of that, but it makes fringe and dye upkeep an absolute pain in the proverbial – I have obvious roots after only 1 week.
It also won’t hold a curl under any circumstances – the only thing I have left to try is pincurls, and I am not exactly hopeful about the outcome.
