10 Things About Makeup and Beauty That Make You Go Hmmm…

April 18th, 2018 by Karen 41 Comments

things that make you go hmmm
Deep thoughts?!

  1. How did baby poop-colored nail polish 1) come to be so frighteningly accurate, and 2) so coveted by the masses?
  2. Why are dudes who have no clue/don’t care always blessed with the longest, curliest, lushest eyelashes?
  3. Why do tweens with porcelain skin and no dark circles wear enough foundation to cover a rump roast and go to Target in full-beat glam?
  4. Why are Instagram brow tails SO sharp?
  5. Why do I remember to bring that 14th tube of pinkish nude lipstick but forget my phone at home?
  6. Why do I feel the need to keep three sticks of half-used MAC Teddy Eye Kohl in my makeup bag?
  7. Why does one feel compelled to buy — not one, not two — but FIVE (*rolls eyes*) ? different bougie foundations/face tints at the Sephora VIB sale, even though one knows they will just end up wearing MAC Face & Body half the time anyway?
  8. Why do the makeup powers that be do lame sh*t like discontinue the world’s best brown pencil liner (I’m talking to you, person who took MAC Coffee away from me!)?
  9. Has the “influencer”/brand collaboration trend hit its peak?
  10. Is there anything out there like liquid SPANX for under-eye bags, and if there is, where can I get it, and do they ship overnight?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy hump day, babe! ?

I hear you on #10! My friend swears by using cortizone under her eyes. I started trying it but haven’t had success. I’m not very consistent, though.

I feel like I could add a zillion things to your list!

    11. When will we see more men in makeup and Beauty advertising? I freaking live for Mac Daddy and Patrick Starrr and the others!

    12. When will we see more women above a size 12 in makeup advertising?

    13. When will we see women over the age of 16 in Beauty advertising? Nothing inspires me like seeing women in their forties fifties and sixties+ rocking a bright red lip or bold liner look, etc. I’m not getting younger so more examples of how to look fabulous and give no effs as one grows older would be much appreciated, thank you, Universe.

    14. Why do people care whether or not women wear makeup to the gym? I am over your judgment, I can outlift you anyway.

    15. On the flip side I’m ready for more makeup-free celebrities. Nothing challenges one’s bias like doing the opposite of what it is expected. You go, Alicia Keys.

    16. When will the drawing of oversize lips trend end? It’s so obvious with someone draws above the lip line and it drives me crazy. Kat Von D I’m looking at you and all your freakishly large lip sample pictures! More lip shape diversity please!

    17. Speaking of Kat Von D how is she so beautiful all the dang time? I’ve never ever seen a bad picture of her which is crazy!

    18. I don’t understand how companies keep coming out with “new” colors. Haven’t we seen all the colors possible by this point?

    19. Will women shaving their heads become a thing? (I hope so!)

    20. When I was younger all you had to do for foundation was pick a color that matched your skin and put it all over your face. Now you need Foundation preferably in two shades, contour, concealer, setting powder, highlight, etc. WHAT HAPPENED?! ?

    Ok I’m done. ?

They discontinued it in the US. If you’re outside of the US, you should be fine. 🙂

Wait! You mean I could have waltzed into one of the MAC stores I saw in Tokyo two weeks ago and picked up two MAC Coffee liners? One for me and one for you! I did not know that and just avoided going into MAC thinking, I can get MAC in the US.
So serious question, “Should I put it on my shopping list of things I want Dear Husband to pick up for me when he returns to Tokyo in May?” He really doesn’t mind shopping for me as long as I give him a screen shot to show the SAs.

On the list it goes. If you still have a Coffee liner, snap a pic of it and send it my way. It’s easiest if Dear Hubs has a photo to show. He says the SAs love waiting on him because he has a list, he has photos and there’s no fussing around trying things on, so it’s a quick sale.

Ahh, a pink lippie girl after my own heart! In this pic I’m wearing Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Menace. And in the MAC post before this with the glitter I’m wearing MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in To Matte With Love.

Try The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG. Pat it on your eye bags and they will be gone in 5 minutes! I’ve yet to find anything that truly gets rid of dark circles though. Maybe I just need to use it for longer. It definitely works for puffiness instantly!

Also, why was the 17 year-old girl working the drive-through at McDonald’s last week wearing makeup that would make Kim Kardashian look like a minimalist? (I wanted to ask if she was going to try out for a part in The Mikado, but I refrained.)

Why is it so hard to find a decent brown eyeliner?

How can I get control of my eyeshadow and lipstick obsession before the VIB sale starts on Friday?

What’s on your list for Fri-yay?

Brown eyeliner, lol. I’m trying UD 24/7 in Whiskey and Pretty Vulgar’s Writing on the Wall in Your’s Truly. I’m also getting a full-size Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid lipstick in Lovesick, which is my ***holy grail*** lipstick.
Also some Living Proof In-Shower Styler (love it so much!) and some Boscia Charcoal facewash for my niece. Her poor 15-year-old face! 🙁
I also need a tinted moisturizer for the summer, but it’s hard to find one that is light enough for me, without being yellowish.
All of which will get me VIB status through 2019 and well into 2010. 🙂

The Mikado ??. I laughed for five minutes so thanks for that. My 20 year old cousin scared the shit out of me the first time I saw her in full face instagram makeup(turns out it is everyday wear). A year later I still unconsciously visibly shudder when I see her.

I limited myself to one foundation in the Rouge sale, and I like it so far! Sunday Riley The Influencer. I generally like influencers (the people, not the foundation) and their collections, but I really dislike the ones who seem to be obsessed with “spilling tea” and are always involved in and stirring up drama. It’s very immature, and seems like a stressful way to live life. I avoid their collections and brands.

#6 is me, too, but with UD 24/7 in Empire, Desperation, and Demolition. When it gets to the point where it’s too hard to use in your regular application but still too much to throw away, all you can do is send it to the emergency touch-up graveyard!

#2. I’m just happy I get to stare into Dear Husbands blue gray eyes with the long lashes, even though I want his lashes for myself. At least Dear Daughter got his lashes.
#3. I’d love to have the perfect skin of an acne free teenager again. I can guarantee I would not be wearing foundation on it, if I did.
#7. If it’s any consolation, I do the same thing. Always trying to find the one foundation that will make my skin look perfect without looking like I’m wearing foundation.
#8. I hate when companies discontinue really good products.

OMG SCREECH! THOSE LASHES!!! Love this pic of you – and your skin looks fab. While I’ve been away, you’ll be proud that I picked up 3 samples from Sephora (Becca Aqua Luminescence, NARS Pure Radiant and MUFE). I think the sales gals must have been getting spiffed on the MUFE because one talked my friend into buying some and another talked me into a sample – different stores/different times. Anyway, here are my thoughts: I wanted to love Becca despite there being no sunscreen but it holds on to my dry patches like grim death; I do like the NARS but not as much as the Tarte; MUFE is a bit more full coverage but is easy to blend and gives a nice finish. Look, Karen… I’m trying new things! 🙂
