7 Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

October 19th, 2013 by Karen 506 Comments

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway

The most beautiful thing I saw this week wasn’t a lipstick or gloss, or all of these lovely Urban Decay palettes I set up for this shot (although that was a close second).

It was something I saw at the salon the other day. As soon as I walked in, I saw a dad with his teenage daughter — well, she looked more like a tween, actually. Awkwardly sweet, around 11 or 12. She was carrying a sequined purse and an Archie book, and her wavy hair was wiry and poofed out to here, which I’m pretty sure wasn’t on purpose.

She was all smiles and seemed quietly excited to be getting her hair cut.

The way she and her dad talked to each other was just adorable. There were some necklaces on display by the front counter, and while she was waiting for her appointment, she pointed them out to her dad, and they chatted sweetly about the bird designs, creating a nice memory of an afternoon spent with her dad at the salon.

It made me smile. 🙂

Going to get my hair cut when I was that age was never fun for me (seriously, people didn’t know what to do with wavy hair back then).

Hopefully you created some nice memories this week, too. Maybe we can create another one with this weekend’s Sephora giveaway.

    Hi Karen!
What a sweet thing to see indeed, haircuts were never fun for me either. Or actually, I was never happy with my hair when I was younger.
I used to have long hair, at one point it was so long that it covered my bum. My mother liked that I had long hair, but I hated it. I think I was about 8 or 9, it got in the way when I was playing and it took forever to wash, comb, dry and put in a knot or braid in it. My mother was never gentle while drying or braiding my hair either.. Whenever we went to the hairdresser I would beg my mother to let them cut it shorter. Not short short, but until my shoulders or so. The answer was always no. Even our relatives couldn’t convince my mother that shorter hair was better, easier and simply more pleasant for me.
Then my aunt came to stay with us for a while. She used to cut people’s hair before she moved country. One day my mother asked my aunt to cut my hair. My aunt took me to the kitchen and snipped almost all of my hair off! I was so happy!! Finally, shorter hair! It still covered my shoulders, but it wasn’t as long as before anymore. When my mother saw what had happened she got angry. Very, very angry. But after a few days of me (secretly) being happy with shorter hair and seeing how much work all that hair used to be, she was actually pleased with what my aunt had done. After that, I started to love my hair again 🙂

Born and raised in L.A., but have been living in Kansas for the last 6 years. One of my first concerns when I moved here was if there would be a Sephora at the local mall. Was there a mall? I was so relieved to find out there was a mall with a Sephora. Lipstick is my fave, still trying to figure out how to wear eye makeup in my “old” age.

Most days I don’t want to spend long on my hair (although that’s not always true, especially if I see some really interesting updo that inspires me) and my everyday routine I have down to an art but I always always make time to paint my nails.

I don’t do much with my hair, I just use put flax seed oil on the lenght when it’s wet and blow-dry it, and then BOOM!, super soft and smooth hair. Not as beautiful as yours, though… guess I should start going to a salon more often!

Hmmm, what makeup do I feel I can’t wear? Just about any and all eyeshadows. I’ve been trying for years and figured out my issue is that I have a LOT of extra skin on my lids, plus they’re somewhat hooded so it doesn’t show up the way it should. I’m almost 30 and still haven’t mastered it. I keep buying and buying and wasting $ trying because it never works out. I haven’t given up yet, but I’m not sure why. I wish someone would sit down with me and teach me 🙁

I usually spend more time on my makeup. Most of the times, I just brush out my hair, and I’m ready to go. There can be times when I spend abnormally amount of time on my hair, but it isn’t because I’m doing straightening/curling/styling or all that jazz (my hair is super sensitive, and I don’t wanna cause any more damage to it), but because I’m putting my hair up, and it doesn’t wanna stay as I like, and I recreate it about 20 times :D.

Makeup is a must with my uneven complexion so I try and be careful esp with my eye area. I dont do well with shadows so I go slow.

I definitely spend waayy more time with my makeup than my hair, I have straight hair that I just brush out and tie in a high ponytail most days. When it comes to blending, I would say a 10, because I hate unblended eyeshadow with a passion LOL. When I took drawing and painted, blending just became 2nd nature once I got into makeup. Also, I personally feel weird when I see myself w/ highlighted inner corners & everyone else’s definition of “nude lips” it just looks dead to me, haha.

The funniest thing that ever happened at work was once I was having a busy day and accidently gave a sales rep my home phone number instead of the business number. Later that month when he tried to call my work but called my home instead and asked for me, my room-mate told him I was in the shower. It was funny but I can’t even imagine what he was thinking!

I definitely spend more time on my makeup. Since I shower (and wash my hair) before bed, my hair routine involves just braiding it while it’s damp, going to bed, then unbraiding in the morning. I can also arrange my hair into an updo in five minutes, and my makeup definitely takes more time than that.

I just found my first piece of real makeup I ever bought. I never really used it so it sat around for forever. It was a MAC cream blush. I was out to lunch in NYC with my mother and grandmother and I was instantly drawn to the MAC store so we went in. The makeup artists there were so nice! Even though it was mainly for blush the woman taught me all the different ways I could put it on. I never really used it because every time I did I got teased for wearing makeup, and to be honest it was a really ugly color. But It is such a nice memory!

Well, maybe I don’t understand the rafflecopter thing, it wouldn’t let me post, but now I feel I must make a comment…
The most impactful teacher I’ve ever had was a molecular biologist. I was taking her class, when my best friend died. She knew that the girl was in the hospital, dying, and she still insisted I give my presentation. I rocked the hell out of it, put all my energy into the distraction. Later, after my friend had had her funeral and all, I went to see her. She said that my grades were ok, but it was when she saw me present with all my excitement for the material, that she said she knew I belonged in grad school. I had been ready to quit, and run, but despite a personal tragedy, I was able to shine. Her saying that changed everything.

I spend more time on my makeup than hair. Having short, fine hair, I just put in some heat protecting volume spray and give it a quick go with the blow dryer. I have about a level 5 tolerance for blending and that’s why I spend more time on my makeup. It just takes me more time to get it looking even and balanced,

When and where were you born?
    Ann Arbor in 1995
What was the funniest thing that ever happened at work?
I work at a hotel, funny things happen here on a daily basis. You get to meet some really strange characters from all over the world. My favorite moment though was when a guest from England said “Cheers” to me after I said “Have a nice day!” It honestly made my life. lol
    Write a haiku about makeup.
I really wish I remembered how, but alas, I do not.
Was there a teacher who had a particularly strong influence on your life?
Hmm, there have been a few, I would say my fifth grade teacher. She’s the one who inspired me to write because she always told me how good I was.
Do you spend more time on your hair or makeup?
It depends on the day, but usually my makeup. I really wish I had the hair for some awesome hair dos, but it’s limp as a noodle. 🙁
Are there any popular makeup products you wish you could wear but feel like you can’t?
There are a lot, but mostly because I have wine taste and a beer budget. Doesn’t everyone though? haha
On a scale of 1-10, what’s your patience for blending (10 being super patient)?
I would say on a good day it’s a seven. Blending and I are only mutual acquaintances because I procrastinate and get ready at the last minute all the time.

The 3 gray gals are keeping a safe distance and doing a bit of hissing/backing away, but that’s to be expected. We hope he’ll be able to be out and about full-time within the week. For now, it’s just short stints to get everyone used to each other, then he’s back in his room to decompress. 🙂

I was lucky enough to have a few teachers who shaped who I am. My 5th grade teacher was the first – he made us give oral reports weekly and recite things like the Gettysburg Address and preamble to the Constitution. First of all, it helped me memorize things, which was awesome for me when it came to drama club in high school. And secondly, more importantly, any anxiety I may have had about speaking in public or being in the spotlight went completely out the window. I enjoy public speaking now and love being the center of attention 😉
