Beauty Q of the Day: Does Your Skin Break Out More in the Summer?

July 6th, 2023 by Karen 10 Comments

The pimple that recently set up shop on my chin and I would like to know if your skin freaks the eff out when summer weather hits. Mine does, for sure!

I suspect it’s because I purposefully ease up on the chemical exfoliators, etc., when I know I’m going to be spending more time in the sun. I learned the hard way that I can’t aggressively layer acids and antioxidants and all the potent stuff AND be outside all day. It’s just too much.

So, I tend to keep it pretty basic when it comes to skincare during the summer, which means face wash, moisturizer, sunscreen and anything calming and soothing. I think between the combination of letting up on the AHAs, BHAs and skincare treatments, and then applying and reapplying hella sunscreen all day long, my face is like, “Ha ha ha! Here’s a juicy pimple, enjoy!”

How about you? Does your skin break out more in the summer?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Yes!!! I don’t use sunscreen all year (I know it’s recommended and I should…but I don’t when it’s snowing and freezing outside). In late Spring and summer…sunscreen always breaks me out.

I hope you can find one that doesn’t break you out, Mandy!

No, not really. I wear sunscreen year round and switch up to a lighter or no moisturizer during the summer. In fact I just use my sunscreens as moisturizer. I’m so fair, I just don’t spend more than an hour or so outside exercising before I hightail it back into the shade or indoors.

Big yes to using sunscreen as a moisturizer!

When I was younger, yes, I’d get pimples on my face from the oil and sweat (not sunscreen because I rarely wore it, or makeup, either). Nowadays I have to be outside for at least 15 minutes to get much of an oil and sweat appearance on my face (mostly sweat). I don’t really have acne anymore. However, I did have acne well into my forties, until I started using BHA products on my face. That made a world of difference.

Love me some BHA! I have to be so careful with how I use it though when I’m getting more sun. Do you use a BHA toner or serum?

I used to really oily in the summer and get breakouts, but I noticed that as I’ve gotten older, I’m not as oily as I used to be. I use sunscreen daily and haven’t had any problems with it. I’ve been using face masks once a week as kind of a self-care day, but I do notice that the one with charcoal seems to make me oilier.

I think it’s the sweating and the sunscreen layering that kills me. The worst is accidentally scratching an itch on my face (usually because of dripping sweat). Almost guaranteed pimple. 🙁
