Do You Apply Your Eyeliner or Mascara With Your Mouth Open or Closed?

September 12th, 2013 by Karen 39 Comments

Wearing Urban Decay's new Anarchy Face Case
Applying the new Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, from the new Anarchy Face Case, on my water line

Uh…this is gonna sound a little weird, but isn’t it hard to apply your eyeliner or mascara with your mouth closed?

Seriously, what’s up with that? I must be so deep in thought that my lower jaw just, ghhhlgl, drifts down…

It’s the weirdest thing! But I don’t think it’s just me. I’ve seen other people do it, too, both guys and gals, even in YouTube videos.

How about you? Are you an open-mouthed eye liner or closed? Do you apply your eyeliner or mascara with your mouth open or shut? Inquiring minds want to know! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Haha I’ve thought of this phenomenon as well, and the other day I made a conscious effort to keep my mouth closed.
Eyeliner I do with my mouth closed anyways, but mascara was definitely weird… I just looked bug-eyed and possessed.

I open my mouth because it flattens my cheeks slightly 🙂

Yes! I have never noticed that about eyeliner but I know I always have my mouth open when applying mascara and whenever my husband takes pictures of me getting ready I need to make a conscious effort to close my mouth!

Closed! Only because I remember hearing all those dumb myths when I was a teenager about how it was “physically impossible” to apply mascara with your mouth closed. So I started doing it just to prove a point, even though no one watches me put my makeup on, I still feel like I’m sticking it to the idiots out there somehow!

I never thought about it before, but i guess my mouth is open when i do my eye makeup. maybe it relaxes my face more? And I’m pretty sure i can’t apply blush without doing a creepy, closed mouth, joker smile.

Hahaha, I totally do the open mouth. Even if I manage to keep it closed, I stretch my face out as if my mouth were open anyway (if that makes sense).

Open, always open. I noticed it a few weeks ago and have consciously tried closing my mouth when applying eyeliner and mascara. It’s not like it helps w/ application, right?! Besides, w/ all the kitties around (certified CCL here w/ FOUR kitties!), I might wind up w/ cat fur floating in, haha!

Closed, because I don’t like how I can fog up the mirror otherwise! But I might replace an open mouth with what I call my gorilla face :p

I definitely have slightly parted lips for the mascara or I make a pucker face. Depends on the angle (if I’m doing the inner or outer third). 🙂 For eyeliner, it’s closed. For blush, I suck in my cheeks. I think I was taught to do that by one of my friends’ older sisters when I was younger, though.

Bwahahaha! Totally open. I try to close it and wind up with it open again. Totally involuntary biological response, kinda like not being able to sneeze with your eyes open.

Open and my lower lip would tend to move to the side. Haha. But I closed my mouth if I apply Eyeshadows. It’s weird but surely adds to precision.

Mouth open for sure! It’s much more natural/relaxing than clenching my jaw shut whilst applying eye makeup! The only time I consciously close my mouth is to do a smile that pushes my cheeks up for cream blush, to hit the apples just right- otherwise I don’t even know what faces I’m making!

I know! The mouth just automatically open when you apply eyeliner or mascara, haha 🙂 It happens to me too, but when I become aware of it I close it again, because it looks so ridiculous and it doesn’t help with the application or anything.

In a calm state of mind, I already keep my mouth slightly open. So I’m not doing otherwise when applying mascara or liner. A friend of mine, however, learnt to apply them with her lips closed, so she won’t be a typical girl, haha :D. Because she was fed up with people joking that no girl can do her mascara without her mouth open :D.

I’ve tried to apply eyeliner and mascara with my mouth closed to disprove the myth that it can’t be done, but it distracts me so much that I mess up, so I let me jaw drop however far it wants to lol

OMG! I could have written Brianna’s response. LOL When I was a kid I always did the mascara with my mouth open until someone made a smart@$$ comment about it. Since then I purposefully keep my mouth closed when applying mascara. I’m not going to say I don’t make a bit of a weird face because I’m sure I probably do; but, my mouth is closed.

I just found your blog and the email today really made me chuckle. BTW, are you just super petite or is your cat a gigantisaurus? Love the pic of you and your cat ^..^ PRECIOUS! (I’m a cat lady too!)

I have heard that you blink less with your mouth open, and that’s why most women do that when they apply mascara. I don’t know if that’s true, but I also have my open. 🙂

This is a real thing! I used to work for an eye surgeon, and when we were having a hard time getting a patient to keep their eyes open, we’d have them open their mouths. I’m sure there’s a great answer that stems from the way the face is innervated, but all I know is that it works.

I’m weird. I do mascara with my lips closed, but my lower jaw dropped and soft palate raised. I think it helps me open my eyes up wide!

I do all my eye makeup with my mouth open. Maybe I look like a stupid frog? Beats the hell out of me!! But I’ve got fantastic looking eye makeup. I get compliments all of the time when I work as a substitute teacher, the girls love my sparkly eye shadow! Obviously, this is not an earth-shattering problem. But it’s fun to see and think about. What about the rest of you?
