Comment to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

March 14th, 2015 by Karen 427 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, STORMY!!!), but check back next Saturday for another Sephora giveaway.

Win a $50 Sephora e-gift card

Someone’s a sleepy sheepy this morning. Zzzz…

Rise and shine, morning glory! I was just getting some nice “mommy and toygy time” (pronounced: toy-ɡē) in bed, which is what I call it when Tabs lavishes me with lurvies, but now it’s time to get up. After all, someone’s gotta man the tabby command center’s first watch and make sure that none of the neighborhood cats are invading the property.

In other news, we may drive out to the East Bay today to visit my parents and hit up a couple of furniture stores. I desperately need some kind of storage cabinet and a new bedroom dresser. The drawers on mine don’t even close anymore (and it’s so annoying).

I hope it’s sunny where you are, my friend. 🙂 Good luck in the giveaway, and I’ll talk to you soon.

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • Enter by leaving a comment below.
  • Open to U.S. and international readers.
  • You must be 18 or older to enter (or otherwise an adult based on your local laws).
  • Your comment can be about anything at all, but here are some ideas if you’re stuck:
    • Do you watch Face Off?
    • When was the last time you took a class for something, and what was the class about?
    • To the best of your knowledge, have you ever climbed a tree?
    • What’s one makeup trend you wish would just go away already?
    • Do you hang out with any of your coworkers outside of work?
    • What color are your bath towels?
  • One entry per person.
  • You must use a valid email address to win.
  • The giveaway ends on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love this contest, so easy to enter!

The makeup trend I wish would go away is contouring. I find it a bit ridiculous for real life!

Another makeup “trend” I wish would go away is TV showing scenes with women in bed with full makeup on. Everyone knows not to go to bed with your makeup on! Example: Parenthood. Why is TV so afraid of showing an actress fresh faced? I think it is a subtle form of sexism.

Hope I win! I’m a makeup newbie so $50 would help with my experiments. 🙂 love your blog and voice. Keep it up, sister!

Someone above mentioned extreme contouring. I was reading on another beauty site about how women come in asking for the Kardashin look, which is all about extreme contouring. 1. Color me dumbstruck because I didn’t realize they contoured that much. 2. Isn’t there something very 1980s about extreme contouring? (Did I just age myself?)

I know most people are probably going to go contouring here, but I wish the Jenner-style overdrawn lips would go away. Its one thing to overdraw (I’m all for that), but the idea is to have it be believable! See some girls and they’ve got two different mouth shapes at the same time.

Also I’m really into watching the snow melt right now…..come on spring!

One of the last classes I took was a Mediterranean cooking class. We split up into teams & made various dishes which we shared at the end of the session. We made spanakopita, Greek cookies called koulourakia, baked fish on a bed of roasted tomatoes & onions, and several other delicious dishes. Since I’m a self-taught cook, it’s nice to learn from people who are trained in a specific cuisine or technique. More recently, I took a class on lacto-fermentation (like making kimchi & sauerkraut) and a bread-making class. Yum! I just made myself hungry!

The one makeup trend I really wish would “just go away already” is this particular manicure, and I’m not sure what it’s called. Maybe it’s an anti-French manicure! I just know that the top of the nails are colored black instead of white, so it’s opposite of a French manicure. When they’re colored black, they look dirty to me! Ugh!

I had a recent makeup consultation with my fave Bobbi Brown expert. She brings me out of my comfort zone and we build a look that is natural and current to the season. She reminds me of basic application techniques, too. Despite having pink blush on one cheek and coral on another (I bought both)and bold lip color that taunts spring to come, I left feeling beautiful and confident that I could replicate at home. What a feeling!

I loved to climb trees as a kid. There was one tree that had a long, fairly long limb. The neighborhood kids would pull down the limb and a kid would grab on and fly up when the limb was released. Fun!

I can’t say I enjoyed my daughter’s tree climbing phase, though….petrified she’d fall and be seriously hurt.

Trends I wish would go away…beige looking nude lips (looks horrible on me), contouring/highlighting (I have an extremely round face so it doesn’t work on me and I think highlighting makes people faces look oily) and cat wing lined eyes (if you have small, hooded eyes like mine…eye liner doesn’t show up at all).

On a good note…I just put in my first MAC order this morning and I am so excited to get it. I just wish there was a MAC store in Oklahoma but there is not and I’m leery of going to the MAC counter in Dillards.

I don’t wish for any make up trends to go away – if someone wants Instagram brows, Youtube eyeshadow or Kardashian level contouring then each to their own I say. But one trend I wish would INCREASE is people being aware of brands that test or allow testing of their products on animals. As consumers we can all make a difference and their are plenty of cruelty free brands out there. There are so many brands available that are cruelty free and we can stop using MAC, Estee Lauder, Makeup Forever, and many others and send the message that we won’t tolerate cruelty to our furry friends. Use Nars, Urban Decay, Laura Mercier, Makeup Geek, REN, Alpha-H and many, many more instead and show you care about animals!

At the moment, I am between my bachelors degree and going back for my masters degree and thus am just working. However, I love school and love learning so I have been taking these absolutely free courses from a site Coursera.com which offers hundreds of courses on different topics from different universities all over the world. I just finished three courses called Learning How to Learn through UCSD, Interprofessional Healthcare Informatics through the University of Minnesota, and Epidemiology through UNC. I’m currently taking Foundations of Business Strategy through UVA and Chemicals and Health through Johns Hopkins. Strangely enough, the first unit in Chemicals and Health had to do with cosmetics! It was very interesting but a little scary in terms of some of the info that they provided about how little oversight there is on the cosmetics industry. There is even a course called Managing Fashion and Luxury Companies (https://www.coursera.org/learn/mafash) for anyone out there that may be interested in checking these classes out. They’re great resume builders and are short term so they’re really made for those of us with other things going on in our lives! That’s part of why I love your blog so much–I can read it in my spare time and there’s so many great tips and tricks for those of us that don’t have hours a day to spend on hair and makeup. Thanks for the opportunity and keep up the amazing work!

The best part though was i finally had access to Nordstrom and come to find out my foundation was way too dark! I had of course noticed this but thought it was just because of winter but no come to find out Sephora color matched me way off! They had be in Dior 21 but turns out my best match was a 10! Like what the world Sephora? Have i been a pumpkin for the past few months? Totally angry but whatever. So of course i used this as an excuse to buy a new foundation so i got the Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet in 10 and WOW OMG AMAZING!!! Love that stuff! Dior Star is my HG for date nights but this is new HG for everyday wear! Lurv it. You should totally try this one if you haven’t!!!!!

The trend I wish would be over with already is contouring. I used to love watching contouring videos, but reading a blog one day not too long ago just made me realize.. the 5 shades of concealer all over the face just don’t seem necessary and I don’t think it’s anything I’ll ever need to do. I like to make my cheek bones stand out, but other than that, there’s really no need for a palette full of “contouring” colors.

Hopefully I’m successfully entering this giveaway. Since we can comment as our hearts lead us, I want to say I found International Women’s Day a week ago uplifting. I have read –so many– misogynist and trolling replies on blog posts, sometimes even those that it’s really a stretch to say they have anything directly to do with feminism. Although people who aren’t sexist, or striving not to be sexist or otherwise prejudiced as much as possible, outnumber those commenters…I feel like I still internalize a lot of those negative, trolling messages. So…gurl power! People power! TY 🙂

Heheh, since I’m still in College (majoring in Philosophy and Chemistry) I have to take mandatory classes of almost every single discipline throughout the whole range of human knowledge, however one I really enjoyed was an Astronomy class since we had to go to the Irazú volcano (yup, I’m from Costa Rica) in the middle of the night so we had to withstand temperatures of 2 Celsius (35.6 Fahrenheit) but it was worth it because the view was magical: not a single artificial light could interfere with the magnificence of the Andromeda Galaxy and bouts of the Milky Way, and several shooting stars could be seen with bare eye, and all you had to do was simply raise your head to the sky (we took astronomical equipment too); also on our way down to San José we had this beautiful view of the city at dawn all misty and foggy.

The trend I am tired of is BB and CC and such at US retailers, especially the drugstore kinds. They are over-glorified tinted moisturizers. Most US kinds are not at all similar in texture or coverage (or benefits) to the Asian types and none of those match my skin tone. Over it.

Well, being as I just got married, my bath towels are an array of colors! We received sooo many towel/cloth sets. I love them because lots of them are fluffy and soft, but when I wash some of them, so much of the fluff comes off and all in the washing machine! I read that it’s the norm with a lot of towels. We have purple, cream, gray, brown, jade and dark purple. Of course, I make my new hubby use the brown and gray sets, LOL! However, the cream sets do not get touched! It’s so preeeeetty! Honestly, who buys someone (especially someone obsessed with the beauty of things in life) cream wash cloths and hand and face towel sets in a cream color?! Using them would ruin them! I just want to revel in it’s beauty. It’s fluffy, cream-colored, UNTOUCHED beauty 🙂 Have a purrr-fect day, Karen!

I definitely have climbed a ton of trees. I was a huge tomboy growing up, like no makeup, don’t you dare make me wear a dress kind of tomboy and we had a park across the street. I had a big “Harriet the Spy” phase so I spent a lot of time in trees.

It IS sunny where I am! Still summer here. So off to the pool soon-ish! (hopefully it’ll cure my ever so slight case of hangover-ness)

Those “HD” eyebrows are just plain ridiculous. It’s cool when they paint them in different colors, but for a ‘natural day look’ the overly perfect sharpie brow looks weird IMO.

    Happy Sunday Karen,

I have climbed several trees in my younger days. Not any at all lately. I have pulled my cats down from some every once in a while. Sweet that they climb them, sad when they can only get partially up the side with their strings on.

The make up trend I want to see go away is ‘nude’. I am too pale for nude. I think it is for those lucky folks with deeper complexions. I would have to use a concealer pen to really be honest with a nude lip, then I’d look ridiculous!

    Have a great week.

    Happy Sunday!!!

    Do you watch Face Off?

Yes. It’s one of my favorite talent oriented shows. Plus it’s the only show that lasted about makeup and the artistry of it.

When was the last time you took a class for something, and what was the class about?

Last year and it was about entering into the workforce.

To the best of your knowledge, have you ever climbed a tree?

Never climbed a tree and have no desire to do so.

What’s one makeup trend you wish would just go away already?

Heavy contour and highlight. I do adore a little light contour and highlight but it’s gotten too extreme too fast.

Do you hang out with any of your coworkers outside of work?

    No.

What color are your bath towels?

Black and Gray light my bathroom.

My towels (and sheets, purse, and sometimes hair) are aqua! It’s one of my favorite colors in case that wasn’t obvious…sometimes I wear aqua nail polish that matches my towels and I am moderately delighted when this happens. 🙂

I love Face Off! The final looks are always amazing, but there are definitely a few that standout even as more seasons pass.

I think for me the trend that I’m not on board with is the Kylie Jenner lip look. I’m honestly just not a fan of certain body parts or areas of the face turning into trends.

If my co-workers didn’t live so far away I would hang out with them more so than our monthly lunches and afternoon breaks.

Have I ever tried climbing a tree? HA! Too many trees to count. You couldn’t keep me off them.

I wish the harsh Kim K contouring would go away, i think more natural & bronzed make up looks 10X better!
Thanks for doing the giveaway, fingers crossed xo

Enjoying the seasons of life as they come! Started planning my April 16th 2016 wedding with my fiance looking confused every step of the way. Hoping for my wedding day to have found a great makeup artist or to learn how to do it on my own 😉
