Comment to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

April 18th, 2015 by Karen 425 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, MARISA!!!), but check back next Saturday for another Sephora giveaway.

Win a $50 Sephora e-card

Rise and shine, morning glory. It’s caturday! 🙂

Today’s forecast calls for patchy morning fog, clearing up to sunshine and temps in the low-to-mid 70s by the afternoon. Your nephew is currently perched behind me on the living room windowsill.

Actually, he hasn’t gone outside yet this morning because I’ve only been up for a few minutes, and you know his routine… He’s gotta inspect the hillside first thing every morning before the neighborhood hustle and bustle gets going, so he’s not pleased about this current deviation from his regular schedule.

What did do last night? Did you do anything fun? We just went to a movie down the street. Danny Collins, Starring Al Pacino and Annette Bening? It’s the old aging rocker motif, but I always like those. It’s interesting to see how famous people interact with the world. It seems like a very lonely life sometimes, even with all the perks.

Today I’m just staying around the house, maybe going to Blue Barn to get a salad for lunch, but I have to — or at least I really want to — finish setting up my deck garden. We’re making this the Summer of the Tomato, so we have to clean out the old pots from last year, top off the pots with fresh potting mix, and get some plants started. El Hub brought home seven huge bags of potting mix the other day, so it’s time to get a little dirty. 🙂

Other than that, I don’t know… Maybe planning for one or two trips. We’ve been thinking about going to Tahoe again, and maybe the Big Island. Maybe a quick trip to Portland, too, because we have some friends up there.

Gotta take the time to actually make the plans, though; otherwise, it’ll be October before we know it.

I hope you have a great weekend, my friend. Good luck in the giveaway, and I’ll talk to you soon.

My ex-profession had me using business jargon all the time! It’s what turned me into a good bs’er. :/ Let’s see… low-hanging fruit, boil the ocean, table it, put it in the parking lot, and the dreaded “synergies” are just some examples.

    Happy Saturday to you!

Today I’m going for brunch with a friend, and then grocery shopping with the boyfriend, and then probably for a run. It’s still only about 4°C here (39°F) so it’s a bit too cold for me to run outside so I’ll go to the track 🙂

It has rained for 6 days straight here in New Orleans. I’m feeling sun-deprived!

Also, I work in IT and we love our acronyms. For example: Yesterday, the SAN and the NAS had a DFS error, which overloaded the T1 and stopped traffic on the MPLS and VPN.

Once, a stranger saw that I was struggling one day on the bus. I had 4 of my kids with me (I have 5 sons) and my youngest two were still in a stoller and both were sick. We were on our way to the doctors. For no reason at all, as she got off the bus, she slipped a $100 bill in my hand and told me to take the kids out to dinner that night. I tried to decline, but she insisted I take it. It kind of restored my faith in humanity.

    Truth or dare?
Truth. I hate doing things I don’t wanna do! I’d rather spill the beans 😛

Something you enjoy the taste of but not the smell?
Wine, oddly enough. I don’t like smelling it, but I love drinkin it 🙂

On a scale of 1-10, how are you at bullsh*tting?
10/10 as a Philosophy major in college, I got really REALLY good at refining my BS. I can give you a well-researched, 10 page paper on absolutely nothing and make it sound academic.

Has a stranger ever helped you out of a bind?
Yes. One time I was traveling with Phoebe (my schnauzer), and I was coming home from college, so I had her in her carrier, a carry-on, and a backpack. Needless to say, I was blocking the entire airplane hallway and couldn’t figure out how to do anything. A really nice man in a really sharp suit stood up and helped me. He just smiled and took my luggage and he took care of putting it away and handing me my puppy. Just the nicest.

    I’m a very __________ person.
Sensitive. I swear, I take everything so seriously and personally. I’m the type of person that if we’re fighting and you start yelling, it’s not a matter of whether or not I’ll cry, but how hard I’ll cry. I’m also the type of person that if someone says something mean to me, it sticks for YEARS. I’m still self conscious about my dancing because some b*tch in the sixth grade told me I looked stupid dancing.

What’s some of the jargon of your profession?
    FMV and HAI reports
    Emergency Room On-Call Agreement
    Assignment and Assumption
    CLIA licenses
    CMS certification
    Audit Services

    Very legal and medical 😀

Gosh, I’ve missed your blog, Karen! Work’s got me all in a bind, but it feels good to read up on it 🙂

On a scale of 1-10, how are you at bullsh*tting? 10 (I used to be a lawyer).
Has a stranger ever helped you out of a bind? Not that I remember.

I think I am a solid 8-9 out of 10 when it comes to bs’ing. Or at least when it comes to faking it til I made it. I think I am good at bs’ing just because I deal with people all day and no matter how you are feeling you have to be nice and put on a face. It comes easier to me, but some days I really have to force it!

One thing I could never bs was school work. I had to read the book for example…I couldn’t get away with watching the movie and writing about it (although I had friends that did and still got good grades lol).

You should visit Portland! I went awhile back and it was a fun day trip. Had some really great tacos at Santeria (a little hole in the wall). I’m really picky with Mexican food. Most stuff pales in comparison to the stuff I have had in San Diego. But this place was good!

A stranger did help me out of a bind, kind of:
A few years back I was a new driver. I took a turn in the city and a second before that one of my tires practically exploded. I managed to break and stop at a parking spot, but I was so rattled, I had no idea what had happened. There were a mother and daughter (I think) driving behind me, and they stopped next to me, and the mom started calming me down, telling me that it wasn’t my fault, she saw the whole thing and the tire just snapped. She was really sweet, and was just what I needed to stop me from having a panic attack.

Once I was in the PO with my kids to mail a package and realized that I left my wallet on the table next to my computer. (I had probably been shopping online at Sephora lol!) We went to leave when a guy handed me a $10 bill. I tried to have him wait a minute for the change but he told me not to worry about it.

Because it made me laugh, I’m going to have to say that I’m probably an 11 on the bullsh*t scale. I’m in my first year of college and there have been many times that I have handed something in that took me a half hour to write (read: like 8 pages of elegant, big-fancy-word crap where I just talk about human nature) and have had my professor personally tell me how amazing it was. It’s super hard to keep a straight face – avoiding eye contact 5 ever, trolling through life.

Oh my word, Yes, I had a stranger help me out! This last December (right before Christmas of course), my car needed a half dozen things fixed to the tune of $1500. As a self-employed part-time caterer & nanny, I simply didn’t have that kind of money up front. I created a GoFundMe account & put it out there on Facebook. I had received a few donations but not enough & not quickly enough (although much much appreciated!) until the mother of a passing acquaintance from my old church mailed me a check for the full amount!! Her generosity allowed me to get my car completely repaired & in running condition in order to pass the emissions test & get my tabs renewed. Someday, I plan on paying it forward!!

The day after I learned the basics of how to drive a manual transmission, my husband thought I was ready to drive in the city so we could pick up our “new” car, I drove the old one and he drove the newer one. We were at the light to get onto the freeway (in rush hour traffic) when…..I stalled the car. Started it up again, went to go and stalled it again. I stalled that dang car several times. By that point I was crying hysterically with a whole line of cars behind me. Then I hear a knock at the window. There were two kind strangers asking me if I was ok and if they could help. As best as i could through my blubbery tears i said “this is my first time driving a stick!!!” One of them ended up driving the car to the freeway entrance (which was on a hill thank goodness) where I was able to drive the rest of the way home. Thank goodness for those kind kind people without whom I might still be stuck at that light! Needless to say, i’ve never driven a manual transmission since.

Ooooh tomatoes, that sounds nice! What varieties do you grow? I’ve tried several kinds but Maine, in my opinion, is just too cool to grow a decent full size tomato so I just plant several Sun-Golds, which I love.
We can’t put anything in the ground yet but I’m hoping to get lettuce and nasturtium seeds going this week.

Are you guys affected by the drought?

And fish sauce for sure. Can’t stand the smell of it but it’s a necessary ingredients in some recipes. Once it’s in the dish, grooving with all the other flavors I’m fine, it’s just the getting in there without barfing that can be a struggle sometimes.

Strangers have helped me so many times whenever I’m with my two little boys. Once, i was in a restaurant with my boys and a lady who was alone asked if she could sit with us. She fed one of my boys while I fed the other. It was so nice of her to do that. It can be diffcult at times with two little boys that the littlest of things do make such a big difference.

Apparently my cat Lily knows what day of the week it is, she thinks Caturday is the day for her to be loved and petted and babied all day long. I just had to convince her to remove her bulk from the computer, I’m assuming she was either looking for a warm spot, or looking to cause havoc. Either way, she got my attention!

I’ve bought so many products based on your glowing reviews and haven’t been disappointed yet. Today my fiancé and I took our 5(soon to be 6 year old) daughter to a beautiful state park in our home state West Virginia. It’s called Cooper’s Rock, it has the most amazing views as most of it is located on top of a mountain. We hiked a total of 5 miles and my daughter loved it. I was so proud of my little adventurer. Thanks for the giveaway you’re the best!

-Mech hand (the hand you use to squeeze the lever to make the mouth move)
-Mech (making the mouth open for every syllable
-Speedo (lycra swim cap worn on your head to keep your hair out of your face)
-Clips (clips sewn onto your sneakers that clip into the Muppet feet)

Oh, I’m gonna laugh about the jargon comment above all week (“crack spread”)…

I’m a geologist and work with (not for) NASA so there is no shortage of jargon, acronyms and initialisms. Some good jargon: degeneracy (not a personal trait), conjunction (not an interpersonal act), alluvial fan (not something to keep you cool), gneiss (silent g – also not a personal trait).

I have had a stranger help me out of a blind and it was awesome. I have done it for others and love knowing that I may have made a bad day a little easier yet I was blown away when I locked my keys in the boot of the key – to be fair Im pretty sure it was my teen but he was so sure he HADNT that I couldnt be bothered arguing. SO its summer and my spare keys are at home. I was ll prepared to catch a bus home, get the keys, wait for another bus (Taxi would have been over $60 there and back) when a stranger who had heard me talking offered to take me home. It was a lovely wee older lady and after asking several times if she was sure we accepted. Turns out she lived in my area only a few streets away. It was wonderful and continues my belief that there are still kind people who do things for strangers and the world can be a kinder gentler place if we all tried a little kindness to others 🙂

A stranger helped me find my way in Switzerland years ago. I was traveling with my husband for his work, so was on my own for an afternoon. I got totally turned around in the town and couldn’t find my way back. A lovely older woman saw me struggling with my map and although she didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak German, she figured out where I wanted to go and had me follow her to my destination…going the opposite way she had been heading before running into me. It was so kind of her and I still think about it all these years later.

The most recent instance of strangers helping me out in a bind was last summer, I went camping with some friends. We brought our own firewood which had been sitting out under a tarp for the season, and turned out to be too damp to light. We had not one but two people stop by from different camp sites to help us with our fire. I think some people get excited when it comes to making fires, and it was nice to see how friendly and nice people were to help us with ours. One guy was really enthusiastic about getting ours to be enormous! Lighter fluid and all… ^_^

the other day I was on a deadline to mail my property tax bill. I headed to the post office where there was a monstrous line, and the stamp machine out of order, of course. I got in the line but didn’t have much time- what choice did I have? PO employee comes out to see if anyone needs products or pick up packages to help shorten the line. When I announced I just needed one stamp, the lady behind me whipped out a sheet and said “here, you can have one”. I insisted on paying her for it, and she refused but I couldn’t leave without giving her a couple of quarters and a high five. She renewed my faith in the goodness of regular folks and saved me a ton of time!

Then suddenly! Here I am, 32 years old, and I don’t even know my skin tone except for ‘really pale, yo’ and the last time I wore makeup I was in my early twenties and I was goth as hell. 2015 is my year of learning the art of cosmetics and skin care. Technical jargon! Some of the terms you see at my work in medical devices:
    – CAPA (corrective action and preventive action)
    – nonconformance
    – First Article Inspection
    – GDP (Good Documentation Practice)
    – Best practices
    – SPC (statistical process control)
    – OOS (out of specification)

So we may go ‘a CAPA was initiated due to GDP errors observed on the SPC chart’.

I was bailed out once by a complete stranger and her lovely family! My friends and I went stand-up paddling at Tahoe and suddenly the winds and rain came n split us up. I had NO cash or phone with me and was completely freaked out. A super kind stranger took me in, gave me food and wine and she and her son drove me a few miles back! With my paddle board strapped on the car! It never ceases to give me the fuzzies when I think of her and her family.

YES! I was traveling to Missouri for work. I am very unfamiliar with the town! Something wasn’t right with my rental car so I took it to a random tire shop in the middle. of. freakin. NO WHERE!

The man helped me and told me i had 80 air pressure in each tire when I should have only had 30!!!!!!!!! He said all my tires could have blown!

He then fixed it for me and didn’t charge me. I had hours to drive so I’m certain I wouldn’t have made it. I was so thankful I almost cried!!!

Hope you had a good weekend! I’d love to make it up to Tahoe again, jealous if you go. 🙂 The blue gradient of the lake is unbelievable. We went up to Big Bear for our 2 year anniversary, stayed in an adorable cabin and it was wonderful to get out of town and relax!

Fish sauce! That’s what came to my mind immediately when I saw the question something I enjoy the taste of but not the smell! Love the flavor fish sauce adds when cooking but I absolutely have to hold my breath when pouring it into my cooking 😀

Glad to get a taste of spring! Although for me here in NJ/NY, it’s only short lived, as this week will be in the 60’s and some drenching rain.

Hey Karen! Something I have a twist, something I love the smell of, but not the taste is liver & onions. It smells delicious but the look and smell turn me off. Something that tastes great but stinks to hugh heaven is seafood! Ever go to a fish market? Lol. Thanks for the opportunity in this giveaway! ❤

Thanks for the giveaway Karen! My favorite “in a bind story” is when I was stuck in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception, and the muffler falling off my car. This guy pulled over, crawled under my car and tied my muffler back on with a boot lace so I could drive to the mechanic and get it fixed properly. It was amazing!

On a scale of 1-10 I am a 4 when it comes to bullshitting for the most part. It mainly depends on who I’m trying to bs and about what but for the most part I am NOT good at not telling the truth. One reason is because my memory is so bad I have a hard time remembering what actually did happen so trying to remember Something I made up is never good. Thanks for this opportunity and I hope you have a good night.

I’ve been told recently by a family member that I’m a very blunt person . I am Aquarius and I don’t like to beat around bushes so I like to get to the point and I think it may come across as cold. Men think because I don’t act helpless that I’m distant and emotionless, well it works for Oprah and Ellen!
