OK, is it raining there as much as it’s raining here? — because I swear, we haven’t gone more than three days without rain in, like…I don’t even know how long. This El Niño character is awfully insistent about his rain.

Rise and shine, morning glory! 🙂 Rain or shine, it’s Caturday!

Poor Tabs… He hasn’t gone outside for a walk in days, and he has some tabby depression about it. He hates the rain. Well…he’s confused by it, because the sound and the movement of the water fires him up, but then when he goes outside in it, he realizes that it’s all wet and cold and annoying, and he wants nothing to do with it.

I also think he blames me for the weather, like it’s all my fault and I’m dropping the ball as his professional pet assistant. “What!? What the hell is this WET stuff!? It’s EVERYWHERE! Girl, you are doing a terrible job managing my wants and needs!”

In other news, I have a fun-filled weekend of baby growing and grocery shopping lined up. Yup, the excitement never stops at Casa de MBB. It’s a thrill a minute, LOL! I hope you’re doing something fun.

Good luck in the giveaway! Meg here won earlier this month. I wonder what she’s gonna get…

I'm super excited because I never win anything, but I won a $50 Sephora gift card from @karenmbb… https://t.co/GsP67BKDq1

I grew up on Lake Erie, and we did sometimes walk out onto the lake while frozen. And, of course if, our parents weren’t around to catch us! Ah, the good old days! Would never let my kids do that. Best makeup related purchase was Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector.

Grew up in Michigan and used to go snowmobiling on the Canadian side of frozen Lake Erie. Learned how to ice skate on frozen lakes, rivers and ponds. No, I don’t believe in the notion of “the good old days”. Even though the past has good in it, so does today and I believe tomorrow will hold some good, too.
Yup, rain on the peninsula too, although not as much as the north bay. Nora kitty claws and scratches at the front door when it rains. Then when I open the door she dashes out onto the covered front porch. When she hits the point where she feels rain on her fur she comes to a rapid halt, takes a moment to realize she’s getting soaked and then high tails it back into the house. One of the long haired kitties in my neighborhood has been out this rain more than once and comes crying on my back patio. Unfortunately, I can’t let her in because Nora is adamant that this house is her castle and no lowly neighborhood cats are allowed in.

My best beauty purchase of 2015 was the ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks. They’re the best. I recommend them to everyone – the colour range is absolutely gorgeous and the formula is pretty amazing for a 6$ product. If you haven’t tried them, go get them; I promise you won’t regret it.

I’ve also got a best beauty purchase of 2016. I know it’s like three weeks into the new year, but it’s so life-changing that I had to throw it out there. Two days ago, I bought Sephora’s Colourful Face Powder in Tranquil. It is, hands down, the BEST contour shade I have ever bought. I own Becca’s cream and powder contour duos, Kevyn Aucoin’s The Sculpting Powder, Kat von D’s Shade and Light Contour Palette, NYX’s HD blush in Taupe, and Illamasqua’s eyeshadow in Hollow. None of them hold a candle to this. It’s the greyest contour product I’ve found, and it completely changed how my contour looks. It’s so natural-looking, I can’t get over it. Also, it’s ridiculously pigmented. Highly recommend.

I’ve also really been wanting NikkieTutorials to do a collab with Becca for a new highlighting shade or a highlighting/contour set. She’s the one beauty b/vlogger that really introduced me to the whole highlighting and contouring thing, and since Becca did a collab with Jaclyn Hill, I think it’d be cool to see what they could do together.

I’d also like to see you do a collab with Paul & Joe. I feel like you guys would make an awesome cat-themed collection. Like, remember those cat-shaped lipsticks they brought out a while back? They could bring those back in a whole host of colours and model the bullet after Tabs. OR liquid lipsticks with the cap shaped like Tabs’ face. Karen and Tabs for Paul & Joe!

Best MAKEUP PURCHASE EVERRRR for 2015 has to be the Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm. I am dry like a lizard in the east coast winter and this just beautifully moisturizes, smells good (reminds me of the Yon Ka skin care line), it’s MAH SHADE (FINALLY, SOMETHING MAH SHADE), and I get a little ancillary highlighting/strobing action with it because it makes me UBER-DEWEY.

I have walked on a frozen lake before. From birth until 6th grade, I grew up in Canada so frozen lakes were usually a solid way to skate (and a lot of them were smoothed out so that it was actually safe). I remember going to a frozen lake with my family, which was busy with other families, and I don’t think we intended to skate so we walked (carefully slid) on the ice to cross it.

In order to dress to impress I follow the “Third-Piece Rule”, which basically states that you should wear three (or four, or five) pieces of clothing or accessories, not including your shoes. For example, I love to wear riding boots, leggings, a button down, and a sweater over the blouse (my third piece). If I really want to go above and beyond I will add a statement bag or piece of jewelry.

Dressing to impress – depends on who I’m trying to impress! But the first thing that came to mind is a flattering, feminine, and well-fitting button up shirt and high-waisted skirt. Comfortable shoes that have a small heel (1-2 inches) tops – that heels sound usually makes people pay attention, but I don’t want to be uncomfortable or trip a lot.

We’re getting some arctic air this weekend (thanks Canada! ;)) so our high tomorrow is forecasted to be -6F, ha! Not that I’m getting out other than doctor’s appointments anyhow. 🙂 Erik is not a sleep-anywhere type of newborn unfortunately! The husband goes back to work Monday and I’m more than a little terrified at the prospect of dealing with a fussy newborn and a rampaging 2 year old. Wish me luck!

My best makeup purchase in 2015 was the Wet N Wild bronzer called “Reserve your Cabana.” I use it every day and love it, and it cost all of about $3. I already have a back up for when I use it up. I’m happier with this product that many that cost a lot more.

Luckily it’s not raining here (MA) anymore today … Was this morning but at the moment it’s actually pretty sunny outside…..
Have to say.. Caturday that’s pretty cute.. I have a baby kitty (he’s 6) and I love love love kitties …. The reason I started following this blog is because makeup and kitties are my two most favorite things …
Have fun baby shopping … Bet you’re getting super excited to finally have the baby… Can’t imagine your excitement ☺️

Have to answer my favorite purchase of 2015 would have to be the Power Peel 3 step system from OLE HENRIKSEN…. Works wonders and I recommend it to anyone of any age. It’s about $60 for 6 treatments and I like to do a treatment every couple weeks so lasts about 3 months. When I first got it I did 3 treatments the first month (every 10 days) just to get a good start but really you could do it 1-2 a month and it’s still wonderful… It would depend on individual skin but hey I still would recommend it to anyone… I realize it’s $60 ish but it’s really worth trying… ??❤️☺️

Living in London means rain EVERY DAY. I go back home to Chicago a bit which means SNOW! The constant rain though is worse to me than snow!

I went to college on Lake Superior and walked on it many times, along with falling through (shallow waters!). I’ve also lived on Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan…obviously not ON the lake itself, and gently stepped on those!

Best beauty product is the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani eye palette which I accidentally and happily own two!

    Oh F no!

Do you believe in the notion of “the good old days”?

My days have rarely been good though I did have more friendships with lovely people from my mid teens through my mid twenties!

How do you dress to impress?

I don’t right now. I don’t care. When I’ve cared in the past, I’ve been in a suit or some killer duds.

Who’s a good trendsetter in your estimation?

I like to people who are approachable, but recently many of my favorite bloggers have gotten incredibly posh very fast.

For Celebs I like Gwen Stefani of course, Cate Blanchett, Melissa McCarthy, Tilda Swinton, and many others. I love fun and fearless ladies!

I’ve been watering the garden but it’s not enough, I’ve lost a few shrubs already. ?

Baz Luhrmann’s Free to Wear Sunscreen sums up the “good old days” perfectly:

    “Accept certain inalienable truths–
Prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too, will get old,
And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young
Prices were reasonable, politicians were noble,
    And children respected their elders.”

The “good old days” are such a myth! There are new challenges now, and not that they are all a bed of roses, but overall as a human race I think we are better than ever. People who grew up in the 70’s say that it was nice to play outside without worrying about being kidnapped, but statistics say there were more stranger abductions in the 1970’s than there are now. People talk about the 1950’s as being a time of innocence…they were great if you were a white male, but not so hot if you were a woman or minority and discrimination was widely accepted. In the 1920’s there was The Great Depression. We can go all the way back to the dark ages where you could be killed by a sadistic ruler if they didn’t like the way that you looked, so when were these “good old days”?

I grew up in the 70s, and most people knew very well that kids could be taken by strangers. (My mother was a kid in the 40s, and someone tried to kidnap her.) Not everyone let their kids run around all day, unaccompanied by an adult. People are probably more paranoid about it now due to the fact that if you have cable and watch news channels you’ll hear a lot more about it than you would have when there was only a 1.5 minute story on your local news.

I think the notion of the ‘good old days’ is nostalgia, mostly. People use it as a way to say today is bad. What they should be doing is trying to change what they don’t like about today, rather than reminiscing about something they can never get back, then feeling bitter about it.

I dress to impress by wearing whatever makes me feel most comfortable in the moment. Nothing makes me feel more awkward than wearing clothes that are physically uncomfortable or don’t authentically represent my style. It’s also super distracting when you have to stop to adjust your shirt or skirt hem every five seconds, so it’s best to avoid any unnecessary fuss.

Last night I had a dream that I was at Disneyland. The person in front of me had a monkey. There was a monkey in line! And it wasn’t even a suit-wearing movie type of monkey, it was a wild monkey that had no business being in line at Disneyland. I was backing away to alert the necessary Disneyland employees, when the monkey started peeing on the people in line. I found an employee and told them the story, they looked at me as though I were nuts and said, “That is ridiculous.”

I think my brain is ridiculous for coming up with this stuff. Cheers!

Usually people who think the old days were better are having a selective memory about it. Those who think the 1950s were so amazing tend to forget the institutionalized racism and sexism of the era, for example (or they profited from it, so it was good for them). There are always bad things in every time, and some good things in every time.

The “good old days” have been scientifically proven to be rose-colored glasses over the past, is my understanding.

On a less cynical note, the best makeup/beauty purchase of 2015 was definitely my sunscreen from Paula’s Choice. It’s actually a really good primer that keeps me from being oily or getting sun damage. Although I think my husband thinks the AHA from Paula’s Choice was the best purchase, since he calls it my “miracle goo.” Needless to say, my skin is super clear right now.

    3. Dress to impress? A tailored suit, no question.
    4. Good trendsetter? Duchess Kate Middleton
    5. Best makeup purchase this year? Oh…only 1..dear Lord! Lol, ok, I am very indecisive on this one, but I’m going to go with MAC Melba blush. It seems that I’ve missed the boat on this blush until now but it really is a perfect warm neutral, its between that and MAC Sprinkle of Magic lipstick which is a perfect nude for me. Karen, you managed to make me narrow it down to 2! 🙂

Hey Karen, I hope you and BG are doing good.
When I think of ‘good old days’, I think of my grandma who used to bake the world’s best sugar cookies. The smell was heavenly. Although she passed away a few years ago, I still remember how her kitchen used to be filled with that sweet sugary smell. I tried to recreate the original recipe a couple of times, but it never tasted as good as back in the ‘good old days’ when my grandma made them for us.

Oh and my favorite makeup purchase of 2015 must be my first Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick. Such a great formula.

I live in the NE and when I was in 9th grade I had to walk to school. There was this huge pond that we had to walk around to get to the main road. One day we were running late so we decided to just walk across the frozen pond to save time. This seemed to work out well and cut our walk by at least 10 min. This was working out pretty good until the day we were walking across it and we heard the ice starting to crack and pop.. Needless to say we ran as fast as we could to the other side and never attempted it again.

I have never walked on a frozen lake. As a matter of fact I only got to see snow for the first time last year, on holiday in Munich.
I am “down under” and as such, not a lot of snow here. As such it was quite a thrill to wake up the morning of the day after Christmas to see it falling.

My best makeup purchase of 2015 would be the Urban Decay 24/7 liquid eyeliner in black. I have searched for years for a liner to create a glossy fine line for my hooded eyes (so creating both a line and some eyeshadow interest is prime real-estate and I don’t have much to work with!) this strikes the perfect balance, is a true rich black (bonus points) and probably the easiest liner to create that beautiful cat eye flick (or is it the years of struggling with other products that made using this product so easy?) I can’t answer that easily, but I can certainly say this product was my best makeup purchase of 2015!

Pretty sure Sunday Riley’s Power Couple Duo (Good Genes Treatment and Luna Sleeping Night Oil) changed my skin and life forever. I have the most hopelessly oily porous breakout-prone uneven-toned mess of a face ever, and this combination calmed it down and cleared it up and sometimes I can even go a whole day without blotting once. It’s ridiculous. I’m obsessed.

Best makeup purchase of 2015? After I saw your review of the Tarte Lights of the Party palette, I decided I had to have it! My husband had to search all over to get it for me for Christmas because it was sold out but he found it and I LOVE it. I deployed this January and it’s the only makeup palette I brought with me – has all the colors I need for day-to-day makeup or a night out (if I get one!). I am in LOVE with it.

I doubt it will happen at least not anytime soon because she has her own line with another cosmetic company but
Dita Von Teese totally needs to do a collaboration with Besame cosmetics.

Dita’s glamorous old Hollywood style is a good fit for Besame’s vintage inspired cosmetic line (and Dita only wears the colors & makeup basics that Besame sells).

When I think of trendsetters, the first people to come to mind aren’t any famous celebrities – they are the best YouTube Beauty gurus. I find that at least half of my beauty expenditure comes from recommendations from them (including Karen!) It seems like they influence each other as well, as I notice the same products coming up again and again. They may not be celebrities, but I think they have a tremendous influence on viewers, which may account for some of the great collaborations we saw last year between popular beauty brands like Becca, Ofra, and Colourpop and these trendsetters. I have to admit, I receive tremendous guilty pleasure from watching these videos, and definitely purchase more makeup than I would if it weren’t for them. In the end, however, I still have my own style and my own favorites that sometimes are consistent with theirs and sometimes are not. My favorite trendsetters are the ones who don’t believe in necessarily following the rules! I think everyone like that is a trendsetter in their own right!
