So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
The Drugstore Beauty Edition!
- Body Wash — Anything by Aveeno.
- Bar Soap — I’m a Dove girl.
- Shampoo/Conditioner — Pantene Rosewater is the bomb dot com.
- Body Lotion — Gonna go with Aveeno again.
1. Let’s go back in the day… What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time?
My favorite brands were Revlon and Wet ‘n’ Wild, and I got A LOT of lipstick, nail polish, lip liner and eyeliner from both brands when I was in high school.
I also went through many, MANY Corn Silk Pressed Powder compacts. Remember those? I used to think the tortoiseshell packaging was the height of sophistication! ?
Oh, and totally gross confession ahead, but I rarely washed the pressed powder puff applicator that came with them… That thing was janky!
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands?
I still love Revlon because of their variety and color range (their cream shadows, eyeliners and lipsticks are fantastic), and I also love Maybelline for their concealers and twist-up eye pencils; Covergirl for their tinted brow gel; Neutrogena for their foundations, tinted moisturizers and blush.
Not sure if Honest Beauty fully counts as a drugstore brand, since they’re at Target, but they make *the best* liquid lipsticks and liquid eyeliner.
3. Drugstore skin care products you’ve purchased over and over again?
I’m going to have to go with Neutrogena here. Their Ultra Gentle Face Wash and Sheer Sunscreens are always in rotation!
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore?
Hmm… I might be forgetting something, but I don’t think so. The only place that carries makeup that I’ve shopped in person since March is Target, sooooo…the last things I bought were a lip liner and lipstick from The Lip Bar.
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you?
I’ve tried so many drugstore benzoyl peroxide acne creams, and I’ve never been happy with any of ’em.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from the drugstore?
Hell, yes, girl! My first “grownup” scent was YSL Paris from Thrifty. I remember going there with my parents when I was in high school and buying it from the special locked cabinet in the beauty section. LOL! I also purchased (and received) quite a few bottles of Cover Girl Old Navy as well.
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash, bar soap, shampoo/conditioner and body lotion?
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy?
CoyCoy, of course!
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner?
Right now I would love some nail polishes!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Kim says
Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. It was hotter than Hades here but I’m not complaining! 🙂 I’m going to be terrible on this poll.
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day? Mary Kay was all the rage in our little town when I was young so that’s where pretty much all my makeup came from.
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands? Apparently I’m a total snob since I never buy drugstore makeup. HAHA! Actually I just prefer the ease of online shopping (and the free samples) from Sephora.
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again? CeraVe cleansers and lotion. I’ve had great luck with them.
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore? It would have been way too long ago for me to remember. 🙂
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you? I can’t think of anything.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore? As a kid, we’d buy body sprays or Love’s Baby Soft. When we got to high school, a lot of my friends worked at the Duty Free and they were allowed to bring home extra full-size testers. Jackpot for any prestige fragrance we wanted!
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion? Body Wash and Lotion: St. Ives. The rest of my family likes Pantene as well but I’m a Pureology girl.
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy? Flying solo on all the shopping trips these days!
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner? I might try a mascara. It’s been decades since I’ve bought a drugstore brand and I’m sure they’ve come a long way, baby! 🙂
Karen says
Um, totally jealous of your high school prestige fragrance connection! I can’t help but wonder if you ever got hooked up with Liz Claiborne perfume (the one in the triangle bottle). Every girl I knew wore it!
Kim says
Oh, my gosh, yes. And Colors by Benetton was a big hit too. As you can imagine, we didn’t appreciate the prestige and I remember throwing away half-used bottles when I got sick of something (the horror). 🙁 I should have been hoarding Poison because even the “original formula” these days isn’t the same as the 80s original formula. Which many people are thankful for, but I always loved it (that and LouLou – I still have both). We wore a lot of men’s fragrance too – I remember Gucci being a popular pick (pour Homme, maybe?). And everyone had Giorgio and Anais Anais. The boys all wore Drakaar and Polo. Ah, the 80s. 🙂 I just realized that I’m stuck in the 80s with my fragrance like I’m stuck in the 90s with my lip color. HAHA!
Karen says
I saw a hilarious meme on Facebook asking where all the masks were during the Drakkar Noir outbreak of 1990-1993. HA HA HA HA!
Re: Poison. I think my mom might have an OG bottle from the ’80s!
Kim says
OMG, love it. It was a total outbreak! HAHA! That’s awesome about your mom’s OG bottle. So jelly. 🙂
Maxine says
1. I didn’t start wearing make-up until I was 25 even though I was a teenager in the 90’s. I had no clue how lucky I was.
2. Revlon Lipsticks are amazing! ELF has also been providing fun & affordable eye shadows & blushes.
3. Neutrogena’s eye makeup remover, CerVa’s body Lotion, Eucerin
4. ELF’s $3 bite sized shadow, the pink, rosy option
5. Almay, the whole brand doesn’t work for me
6. No, but I’m not a perfume person. I have two I wear and don’t stray from them; Clinique’s Happy Heart and Maison Margiela Beach Walk.
7. Babo for body wash, none for shampoo/conditioner, and CeraVe for lotion
8. My podcasts on my iphone
9. Same, nail polish
Karen says
You made me laugh with your answer to question 8. 🙂
Danielle says
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day? Wet’nWild, Covergirl, and Revlon
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands? ELF, NYX, Maybelline, Rimmel
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again? Maybelline clear mascara for my brows (The best, non-sticky clear mascara ever made!)
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore? NYX matte powder
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you? Foundations, conceakers- they’re not full coverage for me. I tried Revlon, but the color and texture was off.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore? No- not that I know of.
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion? CeraVe Face wash
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy? I go by myself because my friends would get impatient because I have to look at everything!
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner? Mascara because I don’t use it that often, so I don’t want to spend that much on it. Plus there are some good ones out there in the drugstore world.
Karen says
Hi Danielle! Maybelline makes some lovely brow products. If you ever get the chance try their Tattoo Studio Brown Pen. It’s excellent.
Have a great rest of your week.
Erica says
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day?
I loved Max Factor Calorie 2000 Mascara, Jane Eyezing in Hi Ho Silver and Revlon Coffee Bean Lipstick (I swear they changed its color in recent time)! Plus either Navy perfume or Elizabeth Red Door and Sunflower perfumes. Maybe even Vanilla Fields
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands? Revlon, Milani, L’Oréal, Essence, Flower Beauty and Colourpop
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again? CeraVe Foaming Cleanser for oily skin, Garnier Micellar Water, Almay Concealer with salicylic acid
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore? Maybelline Nudes on New York Palette and elf sheer lipstick in Orange Crush
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you? elf camo concealer. Too drying and full coverage. And the elf putty primer but most if not all face primers don’t work on my oily skin or I don’t like how they feel!
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore? Yes. I have purchased JLO Miami Glo and Britney Spears Fantasy. I think I purchased both from Walgreens
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion? I like Nivea or Olay bodywash, Pantene Pro V Shampoo/Conditioner (Used to be Vidal Sassoon Moisture Lock until they discontinued) and Jergens Shea Butter lotion
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy? My daughter. She is a bad influence!!
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner? ALL!! I cannot choose!
Erica says
BTW I’m weary of anyone who has never tried drugstore makeup or who thinks drugstore has come a long way. Um hello? Drugstore has ALWAYS had high quality makeup. Back in the day Loreal, Revlon and Max Factor had products that rivaled high end. Go figure many high end are owned by the same parent company and share same formulas! ?
Karen says
I do often say drugstore has come a long way, but that’s in terms of color choices. Back in the ’90s there were hardly any foundation shades for girls of my skin tone. There was always, like, one “Honey Beige” if I was lucky, and it never looked good!
Karen says
YES! 2000 Calorie Mascara was a staple!
Efrain says
Happy Monday my friend!
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day?
I mean at my age I don’t know how old do the products need to be, but one of my first drugstore loves were Maybelline Baby lips lipbalm: I had all the colors. Also there’s this Mexican brand (Bissu) whose 1 dollar blush were my jam years ago.
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands?
I’m going to say L’Orèal because their Fresh Wear foundation matched me perfectly and I consider the products are good. Also Max Factor because blushes are amazing and the mascara was considered a Chanel dupe; even though, they aren’t available anymore in Mexico.
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again?
I was a fan of Neutrogena Ultra gentle cream cleanser, but they stopped selling it in Mexico, now I use Cerave cream cleanser and I actually think it’s better. Also Nivea face sunscreens never disappoint for the price.
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore?
L’Orèal Infallible Fresh wear foundation.
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you?
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen is always an oily mess on me.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore?
Can we consider Heno de Pravia as a perfume?
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion?
Body wash: The Botanist shower gels.
Shampoo: OGX ones (those are the cheapest sulfate free in Mexico).
Conditioner: Garnier Hair food (silicone free, but nourishing).
Body lotion: St. Ives
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy?
My sister, because we can think if we buy any deals.
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner?
Mascara, yesterday I was so close to buy L’Orèal Bambi eyes one because everybody is saying that it’s marvelous.
Have a good week!

9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner?
Mascara
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
Cetaphil face wash is a classic! I’ve gone through many bottles.
Hope you’re having a nice Monday so far.
Karen says
How interesting that Max Factor isn’t available in your country anymore! Years ago (like 10, I think), they pulled out of the US and I was really bummed because they made a fantastic mascara called 2000 Calorie Mascara. They also had pancake makeup that was very good as well, and with a decent enough range of colors.
What did you do this weekend? I know the days are blending together, but I hope you were able to have some fun.
Eileen says
Talk about a trip down memory lane! Max Factor pancake was my first ever foundation. It came in a white plastic container with a screw on lid that had Max Factor in gold lettering on it. If memory serves, my shade was Rachelle. Applied with a damp sponge, it was an oily-skinned woman’s dream foundation. It looked like velvet.
Karen says
A lot of the girls I knew in high school wore it. I went through a phase, too. It was good stuff! It photographed beautifully.
Efrain says
Hey, sorry for the late reply but I didn’t get a comment notification.
It’s awkward that they stopped selling Max Factor here; I know that Max Factor and Covergirl were P&G companies (now they’re part of Coty) and P&G decided to stop selling Max Factor in the US because they thought it was better to put all their efforts in Covergirl. I don’t know if it’s the same reason here in Mexico or simply sales weren’t that good.
My weekend was normal but well deserved; I’m working as my dad’s office assistant and while the work isn’t hard I’ve been really tired. Our weekend highlight was buying a new stove because ours wasn’t working ideally, specially the oven.
What about yours?
Karen says
No worries, friend! Honestly I think we’ve all been more tired than usual… The pandemic is definitely wearing me down. I’m trying my best to keep my spirit up and cherish the good things. It’s getting a little harder as more time goes by though, you know? Constantly living with worry will do that to you, I guess.
My weekend was good. Super busy, but good. On Saturday I worked in the yard (still not finished with our project), and then I did a bunch of chores around the house that I’ve been putting off — laundry, cleaning the bathrooms and vacuuming. SO NOT EXCITING. But afterwards I felt really good! Then on Sunday we drove out to my parents’ house and had a socially distanced picnic with them in the backyard. I miss them a lot, so it was good to see them.
Are you liking the work with your dad? Are you learning anything?
Efrain says
Well … I don’t love it because there isn’t a lot to do (I’d have never thought I’d complain for that) and my dad hasn’t been able to teach me more stuff. However, I’m seizing the free time reading for a digital marketing course I’ve enrolled in Coursera, finding an official job or working in my thesis project for the master degree (I’m still unsure if I’m going to bite the bullet and go all the way studying a master, but you need to present an idea to apply).
I understand you, being unsure of the future is really tiring. I’m happy to hear you saw your family. Social distancing is really frustrating, but necessary.
Probably I’m going to bake this week one of your recipe to try the new oven.
Karen says
I totally get it. I’d rather have more to do than less because the time goes by faster (especially at work). I think any time spent on furthering your education is always a good investment. If the subject “lights you up” then you’ll find a way!
If you do end up baking something let me know. I might do a little something today… Maybe cookies!
Efrain says
I think my main “problem” with the master is that is a research one (and in a subject not directly related to my bachelor: Aesthetics and Art) so the subject interests me a lot, but I still haven’t pictured myself as a researcher or professor, which are the most straight-forward options after that kind of masters.
I know that after corona we’ve seen life changes in a blink, so I should take the risk and see what happens.
Christine says
Happy Monday, Karen! I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day?
I wore a lot of Covergirl Foundation even though it was like, the worst ever for my skin, personally. Wet’N’Wild was another favorite (cannot go wrong with their nail color!).
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands?
L’Oreal! It’s my go-to for mascara when I can’t get myself to an Ulta (like, now) or Flower is sold out online. It’s also been the only drug store brand to really consistently match my skin tone close enough.
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again?
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula lip balm, Tree Hut body scrubs (including this as drug store because I can find it at Target!), Bio Oil, Pond’s Moisturizer, LaRoche-Posay Gentle Cleanser
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore?
Does nail polish count? LOL I bought some essie Espressie in “in a flash sale.”
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you?
BB/CC Creams – the silicones are breakout city for me.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore?
I have not….I had to think really hard about it!
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion?
Body Wash: Dove (fave scent is Pistachio Cream w/Magnolia…so bougie)
Shampoo/Conditioner: ALL about Kristin Ess’ Curly Hair line at Target!
Body Lotion: Vaseline Essential Care Intensive Healing
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy?
Just meeee….SO is not a fan.
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner?
Nail polish all day, everyday!
Karen says
Hi Christine,
My weekend was great! I did lots of chores around the house on Saturday, which of course isn’t all that fun, but when everything is done I feel so accomplished, you know? On Sunday I did a social distance visit with my parents.
How was your weekend?
Christine says
A social distance visit with parents sounds lovely!
I caved and got my hair cut – it hasn’t been touched since December and was getting to waistline territory (and heavy enough to where a topknot was hurting my neck and scalp!). The salon was doing a really good job with protocols, and I’m fairly certain we’re going to be rolled back to at least phase 3 soon anyway.
Cleaning will be next week – the cats have been shedding and I’ve got tumbleweeds of fur!! Excited for the accomplished feeling. 😉
Karen says
Oh, good for you! How short did you go? Next time I get a cut (whenever that is), I’m probably going to go shorter than I want, just in case I won’t be able to get another cut again for months.
So I guess Rosie isn’t the only one shedding like cray-cray this time of year. We have one of those vacuum cleaners that don’t have a bag, so you can see just exactly how many pounds of cat fur you’re picking up in each room. Let’s just say there was A LOT OF FUR.
Christine says
Not super short (although the temptation is there…we kept in mind I’m getting married in 3 months) – about 2″ from the front with more layering than usual, and about 1-1.5″ in the back, and reshaped everything. It’s SO much lighter and my waves are back with a vengeance! I’m considering a lob again in the winter, though.
LOL to the vacuum – we have the upright clear-canister style and yupppp….it’s kind of scary!
Christine says
I am feeling less than enthused on this Monday, but it is, afterall, a “New Moon on Monday” (am I dating myself? Anyone else a Durannie?) . Hope you are having a better day!
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day?
Olden Chinese Face Powder that came in that box and in only one shade (WHITE) because…brown goth girl GIRL in Mesa, AZ wanted to be so pale. *sigh* Finally loving the skin I’m in, albeit a bit too much maskne for my liking but whatevs….brown is all good. I think I also had a quad or a trio from Covergirl, the frosty and pastel shades of which served only to make me look MORE TAN. One more classic: Wet N Wild eyeliner pencil, which seemed, at the time, like 10 inches long and would last forever!
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands?
L.A. Girl, Wet n Wild, Maybelline.
3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again?
Nivea lotion.
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore?
Maybelline New York Brow Ultra Slim Defining Eyebrow Pencil and Milani Eyeshadow Primer. Excited to try both, since they’re both new to me.
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you?
Eyeshadow, in any brand. Just inconsistent pigmentation and I am not a fan of the super cheap packaging.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore?
Nope. Well, body spray count? Impulse.
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories:
body wash (or soap) — Dove.
shampoo/conditioner — Dove.
body lotion — Nivea.
8. Who’s your drugstore shopping buddy?
Me, myself, and I. I don’t want anyone to have to stand there and wait for me while I hem and haw over my purchases, check which coupons I have on the CVS app, change my mind, go back, get something else, squirrel over to another makeup brand, decide I need more things than are on my list, etc.
9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner?
Mascara. I have yet to try L’Oreal Lash Paradise! Still looking for my MAC Zoom Lash dupe.
Karen says
You’re not the only Durannie. 🙂 I was deeply in love with John Taylor. Fave Duran Duran song? Easily The Reflex.
Christine says
Woot! I was a Nick Rhodes gal so we would have been friends LOL
Rachel Runyan says
Durannie for life!
Christine says
I may no longer own the posters, books, or buttons, but truer words couldn’t be said! 🙂
Nikki Wogoman says
I’m under 30, so I don’t quite feel comfortable taking the Durannie title, even though I do like Duran Duran. I guess my age would make me more of a casual fan? Or at least my age makes me prefer to call myself a casual fan. How I dabble:
I just bought the Diamond in the Mind DVD from Amazon this month-the concert ran on PBS’ spring pledge drive, but I only saw the last half hour of its one and only airing because I was busy watching New Amsterdam, so I ended up buying it a few months later.
I have “Pressure Off” on my iPod.
I bought Marc Jacobs Rio lip gloss last month and was excited to have a Duran Duran-inspired makeup product!
I have the dubious distinction of owning their 2 worst-selling albums, bought from semiannual book sales at the library system I work for. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Pop Trash (the biggest flop) all the way through, but Red Carpet Massacre (2nd worst seller) is actually a solid album!
Christine says
omg I’m laughing in a good way. I haven’t heard of much of what you mentioned because I think my fandom had arrested development years before the wedding album. I daresay even just after “Seven and the Ragged Tiger.” 😀
Jennifer Baird says
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day?
Covergirl, always been Covergirl (that teal blue compact) and I still buy Covergirl to this day! There was also Max Factor and of course I do love Revlon.
2. Your current favorite drugstore makeup brands?

3. Drugstore skin care items you’ve purchased over and over again?
None of em work for me. If I do buy anything skin care related it would be lip balm and or body lotion
4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore?
Covergirl clean mascara and ELF lip gloss
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you?
The skin care for acne is a no go 🙁

4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore? Wet & Wild Brandywine lip pencil I think.
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you? It’s really hard for me to find a foundation, to get a good color match, but I don’t really wear foundation, so that’s fine. I also like to browse for a long time, and drugstores aren’t always really good for that, with so many people walking around.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore? Lady Stetson, in the 90’s, that was my jam! Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth too!
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion? Body Wash – Aveeno, Neutogena Rain Bath, or Dr Bronner’s. Bar Soap – Dove. Shampoo and Conditioner – OGX coconut or moraccan oil. Body Lotion – Aveeno.

Rachel Runyan says
1. What drugstore makeup (or makeup products) did you love and wear all the time back in the day? I used Corn Silk powder all the time, too! Wet n Wild, CoverGirl, and Maybelline were my three favorite brands for a long time; Revlon Street Wear (I wish this line were still around!); e.l.f. from the time they first started online

4. Last piece of makeup you bought from a drugstore? With lockdown, I haven’t been shopping for makeup in person since at least early March. I can’t remember what I bought at that time.
The last DS item I bought online was NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Matte Primer.
5. Something from the drugstore beauty world that just doesn’t work for you? Pixi’s makeup (I haven’t tried their skin care). Most foundations and concealers (lack of shade/untone matches for pale skin with neutral undertones and oxidation issues). I can wear ones from e.l.f., BH Cosmetics, Makeup Revolution, and Juvia’s Place, and that’s it.
6. Have you ever bought perfume from a drugstore? Yes. Back in the day, I bought Love’s Baby Soft, then on to Malibu Musk body spray, and then Vanilla Fields for a while. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry scents. Pacifica scents.
7. Best drugstore essentials in the following categories: body wash (or soap), shampoo/conditioner and body lotion?
Body wash — Dove or Aveeno
Soap — Liquid, Softsoap; bar, Dove

9. Which beauty item would you rather buy today from a drugstore — nail polish, foundation, mascara or eyeliner? Mascara
