I didn’t think my makeup routine could get any more streamlined, yet here we are, LOL! I’ve started skipping powder and base. I also mainly rely on my fingers to blend, and only use two or three brushes, max.
This happened recently because I went to a dermatologist about a month ago, and he said that I really should be reapplying sunscreen every two hours, and suggested wearing something tinted that could function as foundation.
Soooo, I busted out a tried and true favorite, Bliss Block Star Mineral Sunscreen. It has a slight tint and leaves my skin looking smoother because it slightly blurs pores; I also like its semi-matte finish, which I think looks a little more professional for work.
Anyway, here’s what I’ve been doing.
In the morning, I apply Bliss Block Star, fill in my brows with the brow pencil from Rare Beauty, then curl my lashes.
Next, I apply the Rare Beauty twist up pencil liner to my upper lash line, and then swoosh a little bronze Supergoop cream shadow on my lids with a finger. Then I blend the edges of the shadow with a fluffy eye brush. I finish doing my eyes with a coat or two of Rare Beauty mascara on my lashes.
Then, I dot and blend a little Hourglass color-correcting concealer under my eyes.
I finish my makeup by applying a hot pink Westman Atelier cream stick on my lips and cheeks. I like to do my lips first, pat the lipstick down with a finger, and then take what’s leftover on my finger and blend it onto my cheeks.
Oh, and spray Urban Decay Setting Spray all over to finish.
At lunch, I do my first reapplication. It’s usually more like four hours after I do my first round of sunscreen, but I’m fine with that since I’m mostly indoors anyway. I redo the sunscreen, concealer, lips and cheeks. Then I set it all with a setting spray.
Then, I do a second reapplication in the afternoon at around 3, which is right before I go to get Connor from school.
It would seem like the makeup would build up from all of the reapplication, but when I skip the powder, it actually looks OK! I mean, would I take professional headshots after that last round? Probably not. But it’s good enough to get me through the rest of the day.
Karen from 10 years ago would be shocked at the thought of skipping base and powder, but this is where I’ve landed and I’m leaning into it, LOL!
I’m curious to know if you’ve ever done the “sunscreen every two hours” kinda thing? How did you handle the makeup aspect?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

If I’m working I use a essential oil free spf 30 by Blissoma that’s semi matte and has a slight tint to it, not enough to really replace foundation, but it eliminates any white cast from the mineral sunblock. It also reapplies really well.
If I’m out and about, no zoom meetings, and prefer a little “glow” to “matte”, I love the Protection Stick from Honey Girl Organics, which is zinc oxide, shea butter, red raspberry seed oil, wildcrafted carrot seed oil and propolis & royal jelly to protect from not just sun, but wind and the elements. It’s a stick so great for the purse for touch ups. I never burn (and I’m a redhead) when I use this,

I never knew that sunscreen needed to be reapplied every two hours, especially if you’re indoors. I guess I’m behind in the times. LOL!! The only time that I reapply sunscreen, is if I’m at the beach or a pool.

I only put on sunscreen when I’m getting ready in the morning. I recently purchased the Supergoop! Protec(tint) SFP 50 skin tint and like it. I heard that Shiseido makes a stick sunscreen but not sure if it would lift off the makeup. I like the Urban Decay setting spray!

First of all, I love your routine Karen, but I’d just remind you to wait (if possible) 10 minutes after applying sunscreen before applying the cream blush as it helps to settle the sunscreen preventing patchy protection.
For me, reapplying sunscreen with makeup on is still a little tricky, but I have a lot of methods:
1) Setting spray with SPF: it’s my favorite option when I don’t want to disturb the makeup (for example, at a party outside). My favorite it’s from La Roche Posay but I think it isn’t available in the US so maybe Supergoop or Milani are an option.
2) Powder with SPF: I know it isn’t considered the best option by many scientists, but my derm and some chemists I follow say it’s a good option if you’re reapplying diligently (I’ve reapplied every hour in some cases). I feel it works better if you skip foundation or are using a light one because you’re adding coverage. My favorite it’s Colorescience.
3) Sunscreen sticks: this one is really tricky as most of them will lift part of your foundation, but I feel you can fix it easily afterwards. My favorite is from Beauty of Joseon (available in Kbeauty retailers) and the one from Goodal is better for drier skin.
4) Tinted sunscreen: my method is similar to yours. I also use it when I don’t have to leave the house early, as I start with an untinted version and 2-4 hours after I apply the two fingers worth of tinted sunscreen.
5) Skip base products: if I know I’d be outside for a longer time and I don’t want to have a full base, I’d only use clear sunscreen and bronzer/blush so I can reapply easily.
I hope these ideas help you!

I use either the Vacation SPF 50 spray (smells like the beach!) or the Zinc It Over SPF 25 spray (I use the fresh greens scent) all over my face every two hours. I prefer it to reapplying either solid or liquid SPF and neither spray affects your makeup or stings your eyes. Highly recommend!

Karen, my absolute fave way to reapply sunscreen these days is via Korean sunscreen sticks! I’m loving the matte Beauty of Joseon stick (SPF 50) and the slightly dewy Haruharu Wonder stick (SPF 50). Neither impact my makeup upon reapplication because they’re so smooth and both keep my skin from burning or developing sun spots (and I’m ultra fair). I’m also into the Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen powder (SPF 30) for on-the-go reapplication when I don’t have a mirror handy. It smells like a tropical vacation!
PS – Whenever I see Block Star at a store, it makes me think of you and MBB!
