Is Messy Hair a Do or a Don’t?

October 27th, 2016 by Karen 10 Comments

Hmm… The last time I had a super sleek, super structured non-messy hairstyle was…I don’t know, maybe six or seven years ago? So I’m leaning toward the “Messy Hair Is a Do” camp.

Actually, to be honest, I’m sitting here right now, and I haven’t even brushed my hair today. It’s close to 8 o’clock at night.

It is so messy! But I think the whole messy hair trend that’s been happening over the past few years is wonderful.

A big part of that is laziness because my hair is kind of wild naturally, so being able to have it be wild in society is a big plus for me. 🙂 I don’t have to spend so much time taming it.

Oh, my gosh! — like in the late ’90s and early 2000s, it took such an effort to make everything so straight and sleek and perfect. Flat irons weren’t even commonplace back then. You had to do it old-school with a hairdryer and a round brush, and that’s how you “flat-ironed,” quote, unquote.

Either that, or you used a real freakin’ iron, which I did! My mom caught me, and she was like, “You’re gonna burn your face off!” So that was the end of that.

So, messy hair, a total do. 🙂

Karen

It depends. If it’s intentional and through through I say yes! 🙂

My hair is naturally wavy/curly, and part of that is accepting some frizz and wild looking hair! I say embrace the mess & natural texture. 😀

My hair is so naturally straight and generally mild-tempered so it looks like I’ve put loads of effort in its appearance while in fact I don’t, at all. I do think it depends on the occasion, for the professional environment, a sleek and well-put-together look is appreciated, otherwise have a little fun with your hair because why not 😀

I am reading this at 7:00 AM on Friday morning getting ready to drive 3 15 year old boys to school. I have no makeup on and my hair is as messy as can be. My biggest dilemna is to put a bra on or just throw an over-sized sweatshirt on with my winter jacket. It’s 37 degres right now. Life happens!! Oh yeah, I made Zack his lunch this morning. We just do our best!

I have never been a fan of straight, sleek hair because it’s just a very unflattering look for most people – especially me! I have a lot of wave and curl and I definitely prefer that look. Bed head is a different story (and I don’t mean for running the kids to school, like Jane is). If you’re at work and look like your hair hasn’t seen a comb in a week, that’s a bit much. 🙂 Of course, I grew up in the spiral perm era so I think that informs all my hair style taste.

As an extremely curly haired gal-I an WITH YOU all the way! The late 90s sleek-straight thing was a real first-world nightmare for me-I looked ridiculous, and it took me about three hours to get ready!

I think it’s a DO too! I haven’t brushed my hair in weeks. Lol.

I love it on others. For me personally, it’s a NO. My stylist moved away, so the last stylist I tried gave me a purposely messy, unstructured cut. Ugh. I’ve been trimming away at it ever since. Wearing messy, young hair does not make me look younger. It just makes me look like a haggard, gray old lady with thinning hair. Love my T3 dryer and the sleek hair I get when using it.
I think everyone should just do what works for them.

I say it’s a do, because I’m totally against hair tyranny! I get really disturbed when someone is told that their natural hair texture is ‘unprofessional’ and they are expected to either destroy it with chemicals or spend an hour a day frying it with heat.

But I haven’t ever gotten a ‘messy’ braid or bun to really work for my own hair! My hair, when it’s messy, tends to just look messy, not cool or sexy! I think it actually doesn’t have enough texture — it used to be totally straight and lank and do-nothing, then inexplicably developed a very slight wave when I was in my forties. Which is great — it finally has a little bit of body — except that now a bit of humidity will make it try to turn itself into a giant puffball. And if I wore it down all day without combing or brushing it, I’d end up with snarls that have to be cut out. Even if it wasn’t tailbone-length. I think I have the world’s tangliest hair. But the hairstyles I wear are pretty casual — I do a lot of braids, buns, and ponytails, but it’s not like I back-comb it and use a curling iron on it before putting it up. If I was expected to show up somewhere with salon-perfect hair every day it would seriously suck. I wouldn’t have any time left to do my makeup!
