New Glasses!

May 1st, 2024 by Karen 9 Comments

If you would’ve asked me this time last week about the biggest change in my life lately, I would’ve said that I got a new pair of glasses, LOL!

I honestly would’ve never predicted that I’d be sitting here one week later wearing those same glasses to take a high energy Australian shepherd for a walk. Seriously, life is so crazy.

Say hi to our newest family member Marnie! Her full name is Marnie Marie. 🙂 Of course we would give our dog daughter a middle name.

Anyway, I’ve been needing new glasses for a while; the last time I bought a new pair was pre-pandemic back in 2020! Back then I bought a sassy pair of pink Kate Spade frames, and while I liked the look of them in pictures, I hated wearing them because of the thickness of the frames; whenever I’d look out sideways I’d see the frames, which was super distracting. I rarely wore them, so instead, I’ve been rocking a pair of super old glasses from 2018 for the last FOUR YEARS. I know.

Side note, have you ever bought a new pair of glasses and then rarely touched them? I’m guessing this happens more often than not.

When I went to the optometrist a few weeks ago to get my eyes checked, this was the last pair that I tried on after testing out, I kid you not, 50 or so pairs.

What was kinda strange to me was that it felt weirdly high stakes to try on different colors and styles of frames. I guess I’ve gotten used to seeing myself a certain way, so the thought of going too far out of my style comfort zone was intimidating.

I didn’t want a pair that looked exactly like the ones I already was wearing, but I couldn’t bring myself to commit to a style that was completely different. I dunno, maybe this is something that happens as one gets older? You get so used to seeing yourself a certain way, and next thing you know, you have the same hairstyle for 30 years.

I think this pair is different enough because of the shape and the slightly edgier vibe, but it still has hints of the previous pink tortoiseshell pair I loved wearing.

Oh! Another thing. The lenses! I can’t believe I’m saying this out loud because I’ve been in denial for so long about my near-vision, but these are progressive lenses. That’s when you have glasses that are like the old-school bifocals but without the harsh line, so you can see things that are both near and far. I gotta say that even though it took me a while to accept that, they’re super handy to have because I’m no longer constantly removing my glasses to look at my phone, or having to carry multiple pairs of glasses wherever I go.

It’s a whole new world!

Anywho, that’s one of many new things that’ve been happening lately.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Marnie Marie is adorable! Congrats to your family for adopting such a cutie! Were the progressive lenses tough to get used to? I’m not quite there yet but my vision is soooo bad. I know what you mean about picking out glasses. I often pick out a few pairs I think I like (while wearing my contacts so I can actually see what I look like!) then I bring a friend or my mom or my husband back with me to give me their opinion. That really helps me decide if they look “normal” or not!

Thank you! The lenses take about a week; my optometrist said to wear them around the house for that time so that you can train your brain to accept them. If and when you get them, buy the highest level you can afford. Apparently they come in various levels of dizziness!

Karen: congratulations on new glasses and a new member of the family! Those glass frames are your style – a little edgy. And Marnie Marie is so adorable. How is Rosie reacting to the latest family member?

Marnie Marie is so beautiful, congrats on bringing her as a part of the family. I am still training my 6 month old Golden Retriever ( i also have a 10 year old Lab). Love the glasses.

Yay! Another Aussie family! I adopted mine in January as a list-and-found so the shelter didn’t know any of his history. Got him vaccinated to be sure and we’re in training classes to teach him and me how to do adult dog behavior even though we have no idea how old he is. He’s 58 pounds now 😀
Aussies are SO smart and easy to train!

What a cutie! And I love the glasses! It’s definitely harder to commit as you get older, especially when you know what works for your face and lifestyle. I’ve been wearing a cheaper pair from Pair Eyewear so I can easily switch to sunglasses (magnetic toppers) instead of the nicer ones I got from the optometrist because they’re so lightweight. Go figure.

I got some progressives some years ago and didn’t like how hard it was to walk while wearing them due to visual distortion. I tried them again recently, and it seemed a little easier to use them. My eyesight really isn’t too bad – my main problem is astigmatism in one eye. I can use a computer without glasses and without enlarging the image most of the time. I’ve been near-sighted since high school due to reading so much (a proven cause of near-sightedness). I tend to settle on two pairs to wear while driving (sunglasses and regular). I don’t have any of the new, larger frames. I remember shopping for glasses around 1998, and no one was making decent-sized lenses – they seemed to think “IN THE YEAR 2000” everyone would want tiny little lenses. I told the SA that I thought those glasses were not functional. I stand by that.

I have had to wear progressives for the last 12 years and while I don’t enjoy it, they are necessary. Having someone who knows how to “fit” them properly and make sure the lenses are done correctly is everything. I absolutely LOVE those frames and wish I could have gotten something like those earlier this spring when I had to upgrade my lenses for the second time in a year!
