How Often Do You Wear Dark Lips?

February 7th, 2014 by Karen 47 Comments

MAC Strong Willed Pro Longwear Eyeliner
Ya know, just going to TJ’s…

Hmm… Not often, now that I think about it. Maybe three or four times a month? As much as I like the look, I wear a nude lip much more often.

I’m actually paranoid about uber-dark lip products wandering outside my natural lip lines because I’m constantly rubbing and smacking my lips together (been trying to break the habit for, oh, years).

MAC Hautecore Friday Lipstick
Wearing MAC Hautecore Friday Lipstick ($15)

Here’s something I do a lot: I’ll be at the grocery store or someplace equally unspectacular thinking, “Oooh, everyone’s checking out my super cool dark lips,” when in reality they’re probably wondering who the crazy woman with the black lipstick on her chin is and why she’s fondling the grapefruit.”

So let’s talk dark lips, babe. How often do you wear ’em? Are you all about the drama even for everyday looks? Or are they more of a once-in-a-blue-moon thing? Or do you just simply never wear them in general? Inquiring makeup minds want to know…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. It’s business casual Fridays, babe. 🙂 CFO (Chief Feline Officer) Tabs the Cat would like to wish you a productive day.

Tabs in his business casual tie
Takin’ care of business…

He has a busy morning planned. Lots of important corporate matters to attend to, so he went with his favorite tie.

He feels that it conveys a certain gravitas.

As for me, I’m about to jump on the treadmill to get my sweat on because if I don’t do it now, I probably won’t do it at all today. I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere along the way I became a morning exerciser. I’m just usually too tuckered out to exercise in the evenings.

How are things going over there today? Can I give you a random hug?

(pause for big hug…)

Any exciting plans this weekend? Nothing for me, but I am going to the salon tomorrow to get my hair cut and colored. It’s not really exciting, but I’m looking forward to the meow time.

Happy Friday! Tabs looks totally adorable wearing his tie!

I don’t wear dark lips often either or mostly ever. The darkest lipstick I have is Mac Private Party (I think that’s the name of it) from the Divine Nights collection, I liked wearing it in the fall but now I am ready for fresh spring looks with bright pink or coral lips!

Salon time? Nice! Are you doing anything different or sticking to the same color?

Hey girl! Tabs says thank you for the lovely compliment. He’s all about accessories (as you know).

Oh, I love that MAC shade, too, but I am so with you, though! Right now I want to wear are fresh spring colors. I haven’t put on any lipstick yet (just got out of the shower), so I might have to go with a coral today.

I’m really looking forward to relaxing at the salon tomorrow. I’ll probably stay with the same dark color, and then add in a couple subtle highlights in the front to break it up a little. Have you done anything with your hair lately? When is your next appointment?

      Happy, happy Friday!

My last hair appt was before Christmas and I went with the usual blonde color. I’d like to change something up a little bit next time I go but I haven’t decided what to do. I am looking for some inspiration.

Awwwww, Tabs looks so dapper in his tie! 😀 Adorable!

As for how I often I wear dark lips, not very often. It tends to look harsh on me, and also a bit overdone what with me wearing very heavy eyeshadow and all.

Once in a blue moon, for me, though I have several dark lipsticks that I love. Not only do I find they wander, but I never know what to wear with them. Usually instead of the dark one, I find myself grabbing the red

I wore black lips in my newest tutorial! Ha. I don’t wear them as often as I’d like, but I do wear them and have no issues doing so. Light lips are just easier since it’s less fuss.

In the fall I wear dark lips pretty often and usually by the winter I’m tired of that look (but I will still go for dark lips occasionally).

I wore dark lips several times a week in the autumn and then got out of the habit over Christmas. I wore MAC’s Carnal Instinct today, which is pretty dark and vampy on me, and I absolutely loved it. It’s reminded me that I should try to wear dark lips a bit more often before spring comes. We’ve got almost a month to wait here before Fantasy of Flowers hits the shops, so I’ll try to make the most of that time. 🙂

I’ve done dark lips for Halloween before but never in every day life (I normally wear lip balm or gloss, and occasionally a soft rose pink by NYX). I love salon time. I just got 4 to 5 inches off recently because my hair was almost to my waist. No split ends but my hair was getting to that point where it was long, heavy, and the layers didn’t have as much shape. I usually do my color myself unless I am making a big change. My hair now is just below collar bone length with subtle long layers. It’s perfect and can still be styled in a braid or ponytail easily without random layers sticking out. Enjoy the salon time – it’s always fun to do that, even if you don’t get a big change. Sometimes all you need is a trim or a couple new different layers to spice things up.

I haven’t worn dark lips since the mid 90’s when dark and vampy was the newest rage. MAC’s Paramount was the darkest I went, which is nothing compared to those almost black lips you are sporting! I need to be able to put lipstick on in the car and it’s easier with lighter colors.

I actually really love wearing straight-up black lipstick. I’ve found that MUFE makes one that when worn over eyeliner and blotted seems to have a bit of a blue undertone.

I don’t wear it often because it’s a bit high-maintenance and obviously not workplace appropriate or everything, but I have and do wear it during the day sometimes. It’s unusual but I’ve found if I wear it with unexpected clothing — a floral dress or something — and maybe because my hair is light, it doesn’t look super gothic or anything like that.

It’s also great to wear in a bar if you don’t want to be hit on, haha.

TL;DR: I LOVE dark lips especially black! Definitely want to try out the shade you have on in these pictures, you look lovely!

I never wear black, but I do where MAC’s Grey Friday every so often.
Also when I wear red it’s a dark, usually brownish red. I do love a deep berry purple color, too. Love Macs “All of My Purple Life”, it’s more deep purple then berry, but still so, so pretty.
Always in fall and winter though. Spring and summer call for light and/or bright,

I love your dark lip look! I just bought MAC nightmoth but I cannot rock it. I will try it with another combo like someone else suggested and put it under Dare Me or one of my other dark reds.

When I was younger and my lips were PERFECT (they really were, but now alas they are a bit thinner and lined – BOO)I definitely rocked a dark lip more. Now I have to work with the look because of my age – I never want to be one of those women who “try too hard”. I think all ages can be funky and cool but you have to do what works for you.

That said I wear BRIGHTS and red (and heavy pigments) all the time. I think I will try a dark lip this weekend.

Love TABS’ tie – and thanks SO MUCH for the hug! XOXO

Oh, my gosh, love that tie! Tabs is very professional-looking 😉

You know, as much as I love dark lipstick, I don’t wear it very often. Just seems a lot of fuss to me, what with liner/lip brush/fussing over whether or not it’s on my chin (I feel ya on that one). But I wear red lipstick at few times a week, and that’s not much, if any, less fuss. I have to say that I haven’t fallen in love with the formula of the couple of dark lipsticks I have, so it may be worth playing around with different products.

I love the look of a dark lipstick — always have! Unfortunately I tend to get in a rut with lipsticks, wearing the same one for several days. My cure for this is keeping several different shades in my purse so I can switch it up if I want to.

I am constantly paranoid about being crazy-lipstick-on-the-teeth lady, so when I do wear a dark lip I make sure to tell my boyfriend, co-worker, or ladyfriends they had better let me know when I fall victim!

I hardly ever wear dark lips. I think the dark, intense and dramatic look can look stunning, and can even look adventurous and daring, and takes some serious confidence to wear. But for me the super dark lip look is it is not my color of choice.

I’m NW15, but brunette and kind of fearless when it comes to lip color, so, yeah, I wear dark lips fairly often.
The darkest lipstick I own is MAC Night Violet [Mattene], and I find it fairly intimidating, so I don’t wear it all that often – maybe two or three times a year, always in fall or winter.
Deep reds I’ll do ANY time! In fact, I just got a new [to me] one today, “Legend” by Paula Dorf. It is a heavenly deep true red. I love it!
So, I guess the short answer to your question is: often, at least once a month.
^ That’s assuming that dark reds “count.”

Greetings from Canuck Land! I have to say of all the pictures I have seen of Tabs, this picture really makes me melt. I think an awwww.. is just not enough. It is cuteness, adorableness, fuzziness, and cuddleness overload. I do not have a furball in my life unless you count Boo our Greek neighbours big fat white kitty that occasionally decides to greet us with his presence or the ‘coon family that occasionally decides to have late night pool parties in our hot tub (which we never use). Animals are just awesome!

Okay, back to make up. Love the black lipstick. I really should consider it. What kind of rocker chick would I be if I did not have black lipstick in my make up collection? I love your entire look. Did you do your hair? Ooh.. and what shade do you use?

I love wearing dark lips! I have similar fears about it spreading and smearing when I touch my face (which I try so hard not to!) or when I’m eating and drinking. Or even if I smile big and get lipstick on my teeth. BUT, I like the look so much, it’s worth the maintenance for me. I’d say I rock a dark lip about twice a week, usually at night- preferably dark plum colors. Wine plums, berry plums, reddish plums. Matte formulas stay inside the lines better for me and are lower-maintenance. I have been getting braver wearing the dark lip during the day, too!
