The Orange Lip Trend: Are You Down?

June 13th, 2014 by Karen 32 Comments

NYX Butter Lipstick in Hot Tamale
Orange crush! Wearing NYX Butter Lipstick in Hot Tamale ($6)

Orange lips: still a big trend this summer, and since I love bold, bright lip colors, especially in warm shades like orange, yeah…I’m totally down!

I don’t know if it’s a trend that a lot of people I know are into, though. I’ve been trying to persuade the ladies in my life to try orange lips, but most of the time when I bring it up, they make some version of this face…

I’m wearing the Webbed in Turquoise necklace by Kristin Perry

Incidentally, this is the exact same expression I wore all the time when I worked as a legal assistant back in the day. I’d have my coat on my arm and be halfway out the door at 5:01 p.m. when someone in the office would inevitably ask me to make 500 collated copies of a document that needed to get to so-and-so ASAP, and I’d be like, “Suuuuuuuuure, no problem. I’d love to do that for you RIGHT NOW.” 🙂

I’ve tried to convince my gal pals that orange lips don’t necessarily have to be bright, bold and opaque, like the lip look I’m wearing in these pics. In these shots, I’m wearing a single layer of the lovely NYX Butter Lipstick in Hot Tamale (smooth and pigmented, no funky flavor or scent, and just $6!) at full strength, but you could just as easily take it down a notch by dabbing the tube lightly on your lips to create more of an orange stain.

Or, you could reach for a super sheer gloss, like Chanel’s Sunny Glossimer ($29.50, and part of their permanent collection).

Additional makeup worn in this look: that’s MAC Warm Soul Blush on my cheeks and Chanel Vert Khaki Eyeshadow and Santal Waterproof Eyeliner on my eyes

I’m curious — what do you think of the orange lip trend? Are you into it? Or is it something you’ve skipped so far?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

P.P.S. It’s a travel day for me, as I’m heading up north to the town of Redding near the Oregon border with El Hub to visit family.

Tabs, of course, is thrilled. He invited his favorite pet sitter to assist him at the office, and I’m sure they’ll have a grand old time playing dress-up without me.

See you a little later today. Have a wonderful Friday! 🙂

Oh I am so into Orange lips trend. I am loving my Giorgio Armani lip maestro in Tibetan Orange for a bold look and Lancome Rouge in Love in Miss Coquelicot for a more toned down orange lips look.

I do love orange lips, as long as it’s not super bright or too red! But orange lips and cheeks are so perfect for the summer!

    Have fun on your trip!

I think Sunny is great! I love orange lippies but being a bit cooler toned makes it tough to wear one. The closest I’ve gotten in Revlon BalmStain in Romantic. Somehow, it looks crazy amazing on me when applied lightly so my normal lip color shines through a bit!

I was DEFINITELY surprised to see how I was able to pull off orange lips! I would highly recommend baby steps, but I’ve worked myself up to a lighter application of Nyx’s Butter Lipstick in Hot Tamale. <3

I am SO here for orange lippies. Stopped at Sephora yesterday to play & ogled over their display of orange lippies. Didn’t have time to swatch them but thrilled to see you have a cheap version to recommend. I love NYX lippies. I find them to be moisturizing on my dry lips- even in their matte formulas. This lippie had now been added to my wish list (which keeps growing as I keep reading this blog #myPoorPurse)

The intention is not been seen from a distance, so if I find a lip stain ( matte) that can do the job , But I really wonder how a color like this will look on me, a lipstick shade a strong one I I doubt I will try using, a hint of color matte lip stain sound like the best option.

Nyx has an orange Butter Gloss called “Cherry Cheesecake”. Misleading, I know, you’d think cherry would mean red but it’s a true orange gloss. I love it! I love orange blush too, but it’s hard to find a budget-friendly orange blush.

I have one orange-ish lipstick. It’s alright. Looks very summery.

But somehow oranges always remind me of when I eat curries and get hot spicy oil on my lips that I forget to wipe off.

For this reason, I like oranges more matte.

I have very few orange lipsticks but I love wearing them when it’s sunny and warm. 🙂 Givenchy Fruit Défendu is really pretty, so is Scarlet Ibis. I also own Nars Autumn Leaves but I don’t wear it very often although it is most pretty in fact.

Been down – in fact for a long time I wasn’t able to find anything orange enough. LOL

I’ve always been on the search for the perfect red and since I like an orange red my lips have veered to the orange side quite frequently. It makes me very happy that there are so many choices out there now.

Happy Friday – Love to Tabs!

Orange is my jam. The MAC All About Orange collection nearly made me explode with excitement last year since it completely saturated me with all the tones of orange I could ever need. I cracked into my Clementine matte lip crayon last week from Bite and wore it all weekend. It was perfect for the hot weather!

I so am, have been for a while. Being African American it’s a great summer staple as it compliments my skin tone. I remember wearing a Revlon one back in the 90’s. I bought a Milani orange color last summer called Sweet Nectar (orange cream), as well as one from Maybelline’s Vivids line called Vibrant Mandarin. I just bought NYX’s Indie Flick (matte) this week and I like that one too.

Ok, I need to request a retraction. The Revlon Balm Stain in Adore is the one that turns my lips orange. Blood orange to be exact. I put it on right after your post and realized I’d named the wrong one!

I was at Nordie’s today checking out the orange lippies, and I thought really hard about a pretty one from Bobbi Brown. I’m so glad I resisted. I know I won’t wear orange all that often, so it’s off to Ulta I go or CVS to buy Hot Tamale. Thank you!

Oh yea!! I loooove me an orange lip! I bought the Kat Von D lipstick set over the holidays, it has such a good variety of colors and you gotta love the Kat Von D lipstick formula. The set has a bright orange that is so creamy and pigmented, I just love to rock that color!

Love ’em! I don’t really wear lipstick too often because it’s a pain, but orangey reds are the best ones! I have a really lovely Sonia Kashuk Matte Velvet pencil in Poppy Nude that is a gorgeous poppy red.

    I also love peach colors!

I love orange lips, my favorite is MUFE Aquq Rouge lip stain in bright orange and coral. In fact I’m almost out, I use it all the time. I went to Sephora looking for something bright, one of the makeup artists suggested it and I LOVED it. I really like red lipstick but I feel like as I get older the bright reds I used to wear make me look older. A good alternative is orange. Still bright but in a more flattering way.

Does Tabs ever wear a tie? I found a little Velcro cat tie at Target a few years ago. One of my cats actually likes to wear it! He also wears a Santa hat at Christmas time.

I’ve tried straight ahead orange and it made me look washed out. I’ve decided to give orange another shot and have ordered in a sheer orange-coral lip balm to see how it looks. 🙂

I wish I could use orange lipstick and not look like I have just had a bowl of “bolognese”.
The natural colur of my lips is very pink and no matter what shade of orange I try I end up disappointed.

I love the idea of the orange lip look for summer but for some reason, it makes me look a bit washed out. Even sheer orange shades like MAC See Sheer doesn’t seem to work on me. The same with MAC paradisco eyeshadow, I can’t seem to “rock it” 🙁
