The Return of Velour Track Suits: Are You Down?

February 23rd, 2017 by Karen 26 Comments

velour tracksuits
They’re baaaaaack! (Velour tracksuits by Forever 21, $38 each)

According to US Weekly(so you can take this with a grain of salt, haha!), those matchy-matchy Juicy Couture velour tracksuits made so popular by J. Lo and Britney in the early 2000s?

THEY’RE BAAAAAAACK!

Say what!?

Yeah, and it looks like a lot of fashion brands are getting in on it. I found them at Forever 21, Express and ASOS.

Honestly…I’m secretly thrilled by this, but I dunno… I mean, they were really comfortable! I remember wearing mine all the time. I even bought one for my mom, dude! I think it was an Old Navy two-for-one sale, so I got one for me and one for my mom.

I only had the one track suit, though, and it wasn’t Juicy Couture, which seemed too expensive to me at the time.

The one I got from Old Navy was tan and — wait for it, because it gets even better — the pants were cropped, and I’m pretty sure that the sleeves were cropped too.

It was ridiculous on so many levels… It looked like a too-small flesh-toned velour tracksuit, and I’m 100% sure that it wasn’t flattering at all, but I rocked that thing! Girl, I rocked that thing while cruising the streets of San Francisco’s Sunset District back in the day.

So, my important question for you, dear fiends of fashion, is this: velour tracksuits — would you rock them in this day and age?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I don’t think I would wear them in this day and age but they were definitely comfortable! Wore them quite often in my college days!

      Hi Rachel,

Remember how they were warm, too, but not too warm? I wore mine almost all year long.

I also loved how they came as a matched set; less to think about when I got dressed in the morning, LOL!

Oh man I had a few of these type track suits. I wish I kept them! I had an awesome lilac one from DKNY. I would be down to buying more and will save them next time they go out of style!

Loved me a velour track suit back in the day and I would totally buy another one now. So comfortable. And so matchy! Win win.
I would get at least one and eat cheesecake and watch the Golden Girls!

I would at home. Before NYE I was looking for a cute loungewear for my NYE PJs party and Kohl’s had some really cute velour Juicy Couture suits. Had they have pants in my size, I would have bought them.

    Mhhh honestly, Karen?
I’m not so sure about these jumpsuits, I’m not a great fan… maybe while doing some house works. 😀
At least, if someone pops at the door, I can say “Hey, I’m I’m working but with style” haha

Omg Karen, this made me laugh so hard! I had a velour sweater I got from Old Navy, but no pants. I do remember a friend of mine rocking her pink ones all the time. Would I do it now, nah. But you’ll definitely find me in a pair of leggings any day I’m off of work 🙂

They’re cute but nooooooooo. It bugs me to see people who don’t exercise using exercise clothes no matter how cute or luxe to hang out in. I just finished jogging in my old mismatched tights and ripped old jersey, lol.

Oh heck no! I’m old enough to remember wearing these the first time around in the late 1970’s. I was in college then and I can remember wearing one with shorts in pink. Ugh! First time around was enough. Never ever, ever again.
Then again, I hate appearing in public in workout clothes unless I’m actually running or working out.

      Hi Tatiana,

I succumbed to the velour trend back in the 70’s, too. I had a couple pretty pullover tops and a turquoise pant/hoodie set that I dearly loved. I wore the tops out in public but never, ever would I have worn the workout set in public. Like you, I think workout clothes are for workout time. Velour is actually a wonderfully soft and comfy sort of fabric, but that means (IMHO) that it should be worn when cozying up at home. I never did understand the trend of wearing all types of workout gear when not working out. Getting old, I guess. LOL

Hi Eileen, I love how soft and comfy velour can be. I once had some V neck tees (I want to say they were from Banana Republic) in velour and they were soft, warm and cozy. They were almost but not quite as dressy as a velvet tee.
I think how you dress is a product of how you were raised. We always dressed up to go to worship on the weekends and I always wore nice dresses, skirt or slacks to school. I didn’t get my first pair of jeans until I was going of to college. My mother always wore skirts and dresses, never pants. When she needed to do PT a few years ago, I had to run out and buy some for her.

Your response had me smiling. I’ll be 74 in a few months and I remember all too well just how dressed up we used to get. 🙂

Many of us will say no, thanks, but I owned one some years ago and loved it! It was black with red cherries and pineapples on one of the pockets, but it wasn’t very shiny which I liked 🙂

Sunset District represent! I grew up there. Now I wonder if I ever saw you in your velour tracksuit when I was taking the bus back from high school. 😀 I like the overall velvet/velour trend that’s going on now, but I don’t think I’ll ever be ok with velour tracksuits, if only because they remind me of all the terrible pop culture from when I was growing up…

I lived there for a bit before moving to the Richmond. I lived on Geary for a few years, just a couple blocks away from the park. Is your family still there?

I love the Richmond! If I ever moved back to the city that would be my first neighborhood choice (somewhere on Lake St. would be great).

How long did you live there?

I am by no means a fashionista, but oh yes, I would totally wear one of those. I remember having one back in the days and they were so comfortable and still kind of cute. Of course I would not wear them out of the house, the whole pajama fashion thing is not for me.

    Er Mah Gawd!
I lived in the Sunset in the early 90’s! Moved to the Upper Haight off Parnassus to go to UCSF then later then back home to Sonoma.

Ummm…..I have a black velour tracksuit trimmed in kitty footprints made of Swarovski crystals I bought in Seattle from a company called Christine Alexander 2 yrs ago. Love it! Call it my ‘spa suit’ because i wear it on ‘spa day.’ (DUH)

Anywho, as long as those velour track suits aren’t emblazoned across the arse with words like “princess” & “juicy” or any other absurdities (like the ones from JC were) I’d wear one!

Yeah, I don’t think you’ll be surprised to know I did a little squee of excitement when I saw this. I still have velour Nike pants but never had a real track suit (and always secretly wanted a velour one). Well, not so secretly. When I thought about buying an Adidas one several years ago, the Hubs thought my brain fell out.

I didn’t wear them the last time they were popular but I think I might rock a suit if it’s like the one JLo had where she had shorts instead of the pants. And in navy blue instead of baby pink. It looked really comfortable.
