Saturday Surfing, September 21, 2024!

September 21st, 2024 by Karen 8 Comments

Hi, friend. Happy Caturday! Goodness gracious gravy. I am overjoyed to be sitting here, just happily typing away about whatever I wanna gab on about, and to not have to deal with a myriad of last-minute, pseudo work emergencies that could’ve been avoided by taking care of one’s administrative tasks early on, OMG! Side note, my day job has been kicking my butt lately.

I really do wish more people understood that 1) getting things done early makes everything easier, and 2) you get more bees with honey.

Anywho, I’m overjoyed that it’s Saturday, the sun is out and that we have a good chunk of the weekend ahead of us. 🙂

Before I sat down to write, I was thinking about how sometimes, I fall into a mode where everything I want to do feels so daunting that I get overwhelmed before I even start.

Like this morning, the first thing my inside voice said to me when I plopped into my chair was, “I’m too tired to sit down and bang away at the keyboard.” It’s been a ongoing internal creative struggle that I’ve been dealing with over the past month, sigh.

I’m realizing, though, how it’s so very easy to fall into a pattern of being too tired to do things, especially when you feel tapped out from adulting in general.

Anyway, I’m over it, so I’m trying to shake things up a little by breaking each task in front of me down to the smallest, easiest version.

The idea is that if I can do even just a little bit of something, that’s more than I would’ve done if I didn’t do anything at all. My hope is that tiny sense of accomplishment will propel me to keep the momentum to move forward.

Today, I told myself that if I could find just three beauty-related stories — ONLY THREE — which I wanted to read and share with you, I would be doing a-ok.

And guess what? I did it!

  • Apparently you can use Dawn dish soap to wash your brushes. Who knew? I certainly did not! Now I really want to try it.
  • I’m very intrigued by some of the items on this list of Japanese makeup brands to try, but I gotta say that $138 for a bottle of foundation is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s.
  • This is giving me ’90s brows PTSD.

I will now rejoice in the small victory of doing the tiniest little bit of something.

Have a great rest of your Saturday, and take good care of yourself. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I also haave a lot of ideas and plans of what to do that make me feel happy. So today for example I was like : creating a wreath with autumnal elements, collecting chestnuts and corn and straws from the field or painting the seashells.
With two kids the day is full. We went to a second had bazar – for winter jackets – and got some cute T-shirts and pants. We did some barbecue because it was a warm fall day 🙂 then a nap! Yay! and homework with the school kid. Then we chased the sun to the playground for an hour. So riding my bike in the sunlight was really fun. Maybe tomorrow there will be some creative stuff.
The Oktoberfest started today here. Weather picture perfect. But I really felt like staying away from too many people.

You can also use just about any shampoo to clean makeup brushes. I’d imagine you only need Dawn if there’s a lot of skin oil on the brushes.
I have my own exhaustion situation going on. Still dealing with estate matters, and watching my physical symptoms because sooner or later, some form of cancer is probably going to get me (lymphoma survivors are prone to get some other cancers), I’m physically tired a lot of the time and I don’t know if past or current cancer is causing that. I’m still working, which is probably a bad idea because I just don’t have the time for everything I want or need to do. The estate thing turned out to be more complicated than my parents let on, and out of 3 surviving kids in my family, I’m stuck with dealing with it because the other two are so irresponsible.

Progress is progress no matter how little.
Adulting at work is hard. Dear Daughter was the one at her last job urging everyone to tackle all the data bit by bit instead of leaving it to the last minute and having to work long hours to get it done before the deadline.
I would only use Dawn (which is a super de-greaser) on my synthetic brushes. I think it would be too harsh on natural bristle brushes.
I love that the first foundation (TirTir) on that list of Japanese makeup brands is actually a Korean brand, made in Korea that a lot of Japanese women love. While I love Heroine Make mascara for it’s curl and hold, it really is super waterproof and a pain to remove. You really need their mascara remover to get it off without losing lashes.
Hope you’re having a relaxing weekend with lots of snuggles with Rosie and lots of hugs with Connor and El Hubs.

Yes! Even a little bit of forward momentum counts. 🙂

Thanks for the heads up on the mascara being hard to remove because I waaaaaaaant it!

This is the mascara remover you NEED for the Make Heroine mascaras. They also have a volume mascara and they come in black and brown.

    hey, Karen!
i have been dipping my toe into Korean and Japanese beauty and if you are interested, I have so far enjoyed:

Peripera Ink Mood Glowy Tints: comfortable, kinda balmy glosses that, especially for deeper/brighter colors, leaves a tint as the glossy/balm part wears away

Canmake Balm Rouge: tinted balms that feel just slightly less sumptuous on my lips than YSL Rouge Voluptes

SANA Brow Pencil with spoolie and powder: Gives a softer look than MAC and Hourglass pencils, and lasts just as long on my brows as MA/Hourglass, esp if I put a little bit of eye primer on my brows

Also, I am a convert to Asian sunscreens! My favorites as a combo skinned girl in humid Honolulu are the Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence and Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier Gel.

But regarding the too tired to do anything feeling: with relatively newly diagnosed psoriatic arthritis, that feeling comes waaaaaay too often. Some days, especially the days I take my treatment, I just have to resign myself to #couchlife because the fatigue is too heavy, and if I force myself, the next day is worse for me. I am so lucky to have a supportive husband who helps me give myself grace and a joyful dog who makes me laugh. Whatever little wins we make for ourselves or are otherwise able to get, we should take, because life can be so dang hard.
