My heavens, it’s such a nice day out here. I woke up feeling a little run down today, like I didn’t sleep well for some reason, but then El Hub opened the drapes and a wave of warm sunshine flooded over me. Suddenly I felt a whole lot better. 🙂

Rise and shine, morning glory! Welcome to the weekend.

Not much on my plate today, other than catching up on some emails and doing a little product testing. I would like to go get Mexican food for lunch and maybe go for a hike to soak up some of this sunshine. That sounds like a nice way to spend a Cinco de Mayo.

I think I’m gonna go make myself a second cup of Kauai coffee now. Why don’t you enter today’s Sephora eGift card giveaway while I’m gone?

Be right back.

What folks are saying…

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! 🙂 Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”
-Hana

I’m pretty happy with my hair right now. It’s in really good condition, but I could use a trim (split ends are getting a bit out of control). Also, I would like to color it a bit…it’s my natural color right now and I’m getting a bit bored. 🙂

It’s gorgeous today! Lovin it. I just switched up my skin care regime, now I use Boscia black cleanser (love it) on my clarisonic, and then the sephora brand face moisturizer and eye cream (love that too). When I’ve got a breakout, I use Kate Sommerville banish acne cream, and when I’m in the sun I use skinseuticals sun screen.

Recipe for ghetto-ritas: Combine in a pitcher: 1 12 oz can frozen limeade, using the 12oz can (of the frozen limeade) to measure, add 1 can of sprite, 1 can of tequila (or less depending on how strong you want it) and 1 bottle of corona! Stir and enjoy!

My friend once told me a funny story about a trip to Mexico: She was in Tijuana with her family when a man approached them, selling tickets to see a zebra show. They thought it would be humorous to see a zebra in Mexico, so they purchased the tickets and headed to the venue. When they got there, it was a run down bar with a small theater in the back. Upon entering the room, they discovered that the ‘zebra show’ was actually one zebra in a back room – AND the ‘zebra’ was actually just a donkey painted with black and white stripes! The whole thing was too silly that they didn’t even bother asking for their money back!

I have mixed views on gel nail polish. I got mine done in February, and they totally lasted a lot longer than regular nail polish — but overall I’m not entirely sold. The color selection is pretty small, plus I can’t take it off at home, which means I have to go back to the nail salon to remove it or get it redone. More money out of my pocket, lol!

I’m so…confused about whether I like my hair! I have delayed my traditional spring/summer hair chop-off, because the weather’s been screwy and I kind of like the look of longer hair better. That said, the weight of this length has been occasionally driving me nuts and my hair is getting curlier the longer it gets. I still think it looks great, but if it gets any less manageable, I might go get a cut, haha.

Cinco de Mayo = Guacamole Day for me. Yay!

Audio books suck, I prefer reading books myself so I can make up the voices in my head. With audio-books, there is less room for imagination and to me that is an important factor when it comes to reading a book. Even though it is somewhat predetermined through what the author writes, there is always room for ones personal fantasy/imaginary touch. Thanks for the giveaway!

Why is it that no matter how hard I try, when I blowdry my hair it never looks nearly as nice or as glossy as it does when my hairdresser does it at the salon? Ultimate pet-peeve!

All of your questions pertain to my life so well right now! Haha, I’ve been really working on keeping my hair healthy, strengthening my nails (right now I’m wearing Essie Lapiz of Luxury and Nicole by OPI Nicole’s Nickel on my ring fingers), and figuring out the perfect skincare regime. And I just bought a new book! It’s called Miss Peregerine’s Home for Peculiar Children and I can’t wait to get started.

I found out something really awesome about my favorite nail polish style. I have a lovely topcoat from Essie called “matte about you” which is incredible and turns any nailpolish into a very convincing matte. However, matte about you is $10/bottle, which if you paint your nails a lot can be a little pricey. At Rite Aid the other day, I saw that NYC had a matte top coat as well. For $2, I figured it was worth trying. I alternated NYC and Essie on my nails to see if I could differentiate…. nope! Saved myself $8 when I need a new bottle now!

Growing up, my family went to Mexico most years on vacation. Usually we went to the beach somewhere (acapulco, Mazatlan, Cozumel, etc) but some years it was a bot more cultural (Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Mexico City, etc).

More recently, my baby proposed to me while snorkleling at Xel-Ha after a morning spent poking around Tulum. Talk about a great day! No regrets on the answer I gave him, either. 🙂

I just picked up over 20 graphic novels from the library. A few are the latest issues of series I’ve already been reading, like Walking Dead (I’m planning on rereading the series from the beginning, but I’m still waiting for them to come it), Hellboy, BPRD, & Courtney Crumrin. Got some stuff from the writer of Fables, Bill Willingham, Neil Gaimen, & Mike Mignola too, all which I really like. Lastly, I picked up a couple of series I haven’t tried before, Locke & Key (Lovecraft like series which has been highly recommended) and The Good Neighbors, which is done by the same two people that wrote The Spiderwick Chronicles (one of which also did Courtney Crumrin).

I’m already enjoying a bunch of them & I recommend them to anybody else that likes horror, sci fi, and fantasy reading.

I’m reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which are the books Game of Thrones is based on. They’re so excellent. I’ve never read a more well-woven story. It really challenges my skills of critical reading and perception because the author throws in clues and foreshadowing at every turn if you’re careful enough to look for them. Of course, they’re still enjoyable just on the surface, but these are stories in which you’ll find something new even on your fourth re-read. I highly recommend them! They’re not all out yet, but hopefully George R R Martin will finish up the next two books in say… 7 years. He takes a long time to write – but it’s so worth it! (Just like this comment, I guess, lol.)

Right now, I love my cut (went shorter and with a bang – first time for either since I was in 8th grade!), but can’t figure out the color yet. 🙁 Ideally, I want the color of my orange tabby, Butters! My beauty regimen consists of the following:

Morning=do a quick cleanse with Caudalie Cleansing Water squeezed onto a cotton pad, mist Ole Henriksen African Red Tea mist onto my face and gently press into the skin, apply Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum while skin is still damp. Wait 15 minutes, then apply Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Daily Face Shield SPF 40

Night=cleanse with Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, mist African Red Tea mist onto face, press into skin, apply either Epiduo or Vinoperfect Radiance Serum (I switch off every other night) while skin is still damp.

et voila! My skin has actually been behaving lately (knock on wood), so I’ll probably continue with this routine for a while…or at least until I am tempted to try another serum (which happens often. I am currently eyeing Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Concentrate)

It makes the highlighted hair not so brittle, therefore making the second day after washing hair more manageable! And that’s all we can do sometimes………..manage our hair. Aloha! I only wish that I didn’t have to explain to so many people that it’s *not* Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September!) – that’s one of the things I miss about California now that I’m in grad school in the midwest. I’m also really happy with my hair right now – I just discovered “plopping” (basically wrapping up your hair in a ball inside a tshirt while it’s wet and leaving it for a while) and my super curly hair looks really awesome.

Have you ever been to Mexico?
No, and given how dangerous it is now for Americans to travel there, I don’t think that I ever will!

Are you currently happy with your hair?
I am, actually. I just recently got about a foot cut off (it was down to my waist) and it is so much healthier and easier to take care of now. Plus, I started sing the Yes To Cucumbers shampoo and conditioner, both of which my hair LOVES.

What are you wearing on your nails?
    Fingernails, nothing. Toenails, Orly Peacock.

    Describe your skincare regimen.
Wash with Acne.org cleanser in the morning, spot treat zits with Neutrogena On The Spot gel, and wash with Proactiv cleanser at night.

    Are you reading anything good?
I just finished the 3rd book in the WICKED series, and it was very good! Moving on to the 4th book later today.

How do you feel about audio books?
They’re OK, like for long car rides, but I prefer to read real books myself.

Hope you had a great Cinco De Mayo! I’m so distracted by Tabs and his hat. Now I’m wondering if the cats in Mexico have an accent when they meow. Can a cat be bi-lingual? My mom has a can named Minou (the French word for cat) and she walks around like she’s a French princess and her meow is a little different than the other cats >^..^
