Heya! Happy Friday. How’s your day going?
Mine has been pretty good so far. Today I have the day off, my first in ages, and I have a few hours to myself while Connor is in school, and I almost don’t know what do. I’ve been working on the weekends for the past few weeks, and while I usually don’t mind keeping busy, I’ve decided that this is the year I’m going to fully embrace rest, so today I’m going to do my best to just relax.
All I’m allowed to do are things that help refill the well, so to speak, both mentally and physically. Good luck to me, LOL! There’s always something to do around here, and I’m already ticking off all the things I could accomplish with the extra time, like cleaning the bathroom, doing laundry, going grocery shopping, prepping meals for the weekend, getting ahead on writing for work, etc. etc. BUT, NOPE. Not gonna do it. Rest is the priority today.
I’m going to curb the need to be productive and just do fun things for me today. I’m going to watch a period piece (I’m thinking “Remains of the Day” or “The Age of Innocence”), order a Blue Barn salad, start a new book and maybe paint my nails if I’m feeling ambitious. Oh, I’m going to drink decaf Nespressos all day long, hahaha. I may even take a nap, GASP!
Love me a period piece
Let’s do this
Are you good about being proactive about your periods of rest? I’m so not. I’m trying to get better about it, though.
Anywho, so this note is marginally related to makeup, Kathleen said this in the comments last Friday on the two-toned liner makeup post:
Teach me your ways! I can handle the cool liner situation. But can you walk me through the eyeshadow, please? Is the Honey Lust on the lid and the Woodwinked on the inner corner? And Saddle underneath both as a base? I never wear shadow, so I appreciate your tips – Thanks!
Hey, Kathleen! Thank you for your question. Here’s a breakdown of where I put each shadow on my lid; hope this helps.
Some general tips:
- Practice, practice, practice. With eyeshadow, I think it’s always a good idea to just keep practicing. Place your shadows on your lids, blend as much as you can (use a light touch), and repeat until you get the hang of it. Eventually you’ll figure out what placement works best for your eye shape.
- Keep it simple. I would keep it relatively simple. Do one, two shades at the most. Oh, and simplify by skipping the primer if you want (or don’t). I usually opt out and just do shadow, no primer.
- Smooth it out. That said, if you’re having trouble smoothing out your gradients, try dusting a light layer of powder on top of your lids first. And just keep practicing!
Alright, I’m off to go and do absolutely nothing.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!

I go through phases where I am able to allow myself to rest, or sometimes I am too antsy to let myself do that!
I’ll be 35 weeks on Monday with my twin girls and my c-section is scheduled for February 21st! I wanted 2/22/22 but my doc isn’t in that day 🙁
I am so huge and I’m not able to get done the things I would like to do on the weekends, like clean, bake, etc. So I am prioritizing rest and getting the last few things done in the nursery! Pretty soon there won’t be time for rest or cleaning, it will be all babies!
Have a great weekend Karen!

Hi Rachel (and baby girls!),
I am so excited and happy for you. Yes, please take this time to simply be and not do anything, and even though you’re uncomfortable (oh, I remember that feeling so well), please relish these last few weeks with your girls in your tum. Sometimes I can’t even believe that my body held a baby inside. It’s crazy.
So, there were a few things that I was very surprised about with having a C-section. The biggest one was not having feeling in my lower abdomen for years. It’ll be six years this March, and it’s only been recently when I’ve been able to feel the sensation of my fingers touching skin in that area. My abdominal muscles are also vastly different in strength. I’m noticeably weaker on one side, and I have to really concentrate to get both sides to pull evenly when I’m doing core workouts. It’s the weirdest thing. Also (super gross), but going to the bathroom in the first two weeks after she was born was rough. Number two, specifically. There were a few moments when my husband had to hold my hand with me while I was on the toilet while I just cried and cried and cried. It is very humbling. It is all true, though, what everyone says — your body will come back to you eventually. In my case, it took few years, but I got there. Anywho. You’re going to do great. Wishing you a peaceful and uneventful delivery!

Wow thank you for all of the insights on having a c-section! I feel like c-sections don’t get talked about as much and especially the after effects and care involved! There’s good and bad to both types of deliveries but this is the safest way to get my twins into the world so I will deal with whatever comes next I suppose!

Speaking of eyeshadow tips, have you seen the ad on Instagram (not sure of the brand) where the woman swipes a mid-tone brown cream shadow stick along her crease and that’s it for her crease shadow? I’m intrigued and thinking of experimenting. Have you ever tried this? That could make things so much easier.
I hope you enjoy your day off! You deserve it!

I am so not good at resting, but the day you have planned sounds perfect! When I am off work, it takes me around a week before I can start to properly relax – which is a sign that I should really prioritize it more.

I definitely need to practice resting. I go and go and go until I lose it and go into a semi-vegetative state for a weekend. A happy balance would be better I think.
Thanks for the detailed eye tutorial, it was super helpful.
Enjoy your day! Ship one of those tostada salads to me in Maine. We’re having yet another snow storm but it started as ice and now all our car doors are frozen shut. 😒

WHOA!! It’s like I got a personalized MBB tutorial!! After I calmed down LOL, I read it again – and I can do this! It’s detailed so I can follow the advice, but it also has words like ‘simple’ and ‘opt out’ and ‘Kathleen, you got this.’ (OK, maybe not that last one, but that’s how I interpreted it!). This shows how much you look after your community – Thanks, Karen!!

Resting isn’t a problem now my kids are grown!
Since you like “The Age of Innocence,” I bet you’ll like “The Gilded Age” on HBO.
