What Do You Think of Silent Haircuts?

Have you heard of silent haircuts? You book a haircut with a stylist who, after an initial consultation to make sure you’re both on the same page for your cut, trims your coif in silence.

A lovely stylist who cut my hair a few years ago, Maya Lowe, now offers this service to her clients. I subscribe to her newsletter, which is how I found out about it. Here’s what she says:

Are you going through a lot, feeling tired, need a break from feeling like you need to say anything? Or whatever the reason, if you would like the time to sit and be with yourself, I will be happy to hold space for you and work on your hair in silence, no judgment, no questions asked. Other than getting clear about what we are doing with your hair, we will be quiet. If you would like to choose some music, that’s totally cool too.

I’m generally pretty outgoing, so I’m usually chatty in the chair, but I can also see myself wanting a peaceful hour without small talk and with soothing music playing in the background — especially if I was tired. That would be restful and relaxing.

I can see, though, how some might feel a little uncomfortable with the silence.

What are your thoughts on the silent haircut? Is it something you’d like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I’m very comfortable with silence so I love this idea! My stylist does a great job on my hair but quite honestly they can be a bit much sometimes. I prefer that time to be as relaxing as possible. Plus I like to just sit back and people watch.

Everyone is different but I think it’s great to make it an option!

I think it’s a cool idea for those that want it. Personally I’ve enjoyed getting to know my stylists!

Where do I sign up? Lol. Sometimes I just have nothing to say and would prefer the stylist just concentrated on the cut.

You can book appointments with her online (that’s how I did it). She’s in San Rafael so you’d have to contend with traffic on Great Highway and on the bridge depending on what time of the day it is. Her studio is cute and calming! I like her a lot.

I would deal with the drive ok. But I just looked at her website and I don’t think I can swing that price for a haircut. Having short hair I need to have mine cut every 9 to 12 weeks. That adds up.

That’s one thing I don’t miss about having short hair. I remember the feeling of the hair creeping down my neck and freaking out the second it got a touch too long, LOL! How short is your now?

Short, layered bob length. About the bottom of my earlobe. A little longer in back because I have a low hairline on my neck.
My hair is super fine and thin, so I don’t have the option of growing it longer. It just gets too wispy if I try to grow it.

I love the idea, especially since it’s upon request. Sometimes I want a little chatter and at others I just want to finish the last few chapters of whatever book I’m reading.

I have always preferred this! I like to relax and keeping up a conversation isn’t very relaxing for me. To me it’s a respite from the barrage of noise in the rest of my life. My hairdresser actually likes it too. She normally feels like she has to keep up chat but she actually prefers the silence, too. It’s a treat for both of us!

This is really cool – I have a job that requires me to be very social and chatty all the time and that is also my role in my family of origin and my family of marriage but I recharge through silence … odd I know … I am a bunch of contradictions hahaha – I am going to look for this in my home town.

Your hair cut/style in the first photo is gorgeous!!! Wow, how do you style it with such nice loose waves? I try but have not mastered that yet.

Take Care – Also the floors in your home look great. Hope it is all done this weekend for you.

      Hi Vita,

I used a large barrel curling iron; I think it was 1 1/2 inches.

Interesting way of getting a hair cut. Guess no obligation to be interactive while the hair cut is in process. Being worked on our hair, head can be very calming, why to disturb it maybe unnecessary conversation. This way the experience can be very meditative.

I would love it. My hairstylist is very chatty, always talking about her deadbeat family, etc. Silence is vastly preferable.

I’d like that. I really like my stylist but even if I tell her it’s been an awful day at work and all I’ve done is talk, she doesn’t get the hint and starts talking. If I don’t respond then it’s “20 questions” until I say something. Sometimes the time at the salon is the only “me” time in the day if I am working and running Camp Grandma as well.

Here in Manhattan, this silent haircut would be considered
    very “cray-cray”.

I absolutely love this. I got my hair cut last night and my stylist talked almost nonstop. I just wanted to chill after a hard day. If she isn’t talking to me she is talking to other stylists and clients. It makes the cut take longer☹️ But I really like her and will continue to go.

That silent haircut sounds really interesting. It probably wouldn’t work for me, because I like (love) talking so much. Also, I enjoy talking with one of my hair stylists, because we’ve known each other for 30 years, and we’re the same age. I hadn’t seen her since before 2019. So, when she cut my hair at her house, this past Saturday, there was so much catching up to do. I was actually at her house for two hours. It was so much fun!! I actually enjoy the exchange of ideas, etc., when I’m getting my hair cut. I always have something else to mention, like that I want to make sure it’s layered enough in the back. LOL!! I bet you’re getting a hair cut soon, because you had mentioned it was feeling heavy. You’re going to feel like a million bucks once it’s cut.

Sounds like a good idea in the Age of COVID-19. Less distribution of airborne droplets around one’s head seems like a very good idea, especially since the hairdressers in my area are often the type who refuse to be vaccinated.

Silence makes me feel super awkward and I consider my stylist my friend, but if my husband didn’t just shave his own head this would be his dream.

My favorite way of hair cut! I tend to bringa book with me and start reading the second the consultation is over, and my hair dresser usually gets the hint and just leaves me alone. I can imagine it being welcome for them as well not constantly having to chat up their clients, but maybe I am wrong here.
