What Were Your Best and Worst Beauty Experiences of the Week?

April 25th, 2010 by Karen 44 Comments

MY BEST:

Lately, I’ve been trying to eat less junk food and exercise more, and I’ve noticed a wee difference (aka, I feel slightly less like a sausage in my favorite jeans). Small victories, ya know?

MY WORST:

Probably TMI, but the warmer weather’s making my scalp go nuts. Thank goodness for dandruff shampoo and white shirts!

What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Please share yours in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I think my best beauty experience of this week was getting my hair done yesterday. I’d waited a month longer than usual and it was a complete mess. Having my roots done and a couple of inches taken off the ends has made all the difference. I’ve got a horrible cold at the moment and I’ve totally lost my sense of smell and taste, so I couldn’t smell the yummy things the put in my hair which was a shame.

My worst beauty experience has been trying to get my foundation to look right. Because of the cold my nose is really sore and the skin is all flaky and yuck. Any foundation I’ve used has just highlighted that fact so its been pretty depressing.

Hopefully, I’ll be back to normal in a few days. I want to taste things again! Everything is just texture at the moment. 🙁

Best: Picked up MAC’s Petting Pink Tinted Lip Conditioner from out of the bottom of my MU bag again and I remember why I love their TLCs… Now I want to go out and hoard all the colours, especially since my counter still has the Warm and Cozy shades in stock 🙂

Worst: My skin is totally flipping out… considering it was my first white, snowy winter I thought I got through it unscathed, but I’m slowly finding dry patches on my cheeks and my nose is just peely like a mudder humper. AND to top it of my beloved Purity Exfoliating Wash is doing nothing to aid the situation…. =/

My best is using Herbal Essence “Long Term Relationship” shampoo and conditioner. It works really well for my hair.

My worst is that 2 of my nails on my right hand are peeling. I’ve never had that happen before and it’s a pain because my nails are always manicured. I bought some hair, skin, and nails vitamins at GNC to see if it helps.

You may want to try using a nail strengthener under your nail polish also, i find this to be a major help, and will help keep your nails from peeling untill the newer healthier nail grows in.

Best: I woke up this morning running totally late, so I didn’t have time to blowdry my hair. I have the most wavy/curly frizzy hair (which sucks because I’m Korean and I want that beautiful silky straight hair all my friends have), and sometimes it’ll dry out nicely with some gel, and other times it’ll just look an absolute mess, but even with all the fog and humidity outside today, my hair sat in perfect wavy spirals! So happy, I don’t want to sleep on it tonight and mess it up! =)

Worst: You know when you look haggard and no amount of makeup will make you look pretty? That was me yesterday, and I overcompensated with highlighter and bronzer, which made me look like a haggard shiny bronzed freak! It’s okay though, I learned my lesson. Washed my mug and started over! =)

Best: The nice guy at Sephora give me a healthy sample of Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer and I love it. I’m always on the hunt for that “perfect” TM and this one seems in the running for top honors after all the ones I’ve tried. It will be my next purchase once I finish my LORAC and MAC TMs.

Worst: This morning I used Nair Sensitive Formula to remove this little blond ‘stache I have going on my upper lip (visible to only me I hope). Anyhoo, left it on perhaps a minute too long and now I have a little red ‘stache going! Oh, it still stings!

My worst was getting a giant pimple in the middle of my forehead

Worst was being in an eye makeup rut at the start of the week – actually a carry over from the week past.

Best would be getting out of that said eye makeup rut via the Wet n Wild eyeshadow palette – its an awesome product at an even awesome-r price!

My best beauty experience of the week was discovering Rimmel’s Stay Matte Foundation. At $6.99 it’s a steal and looks really nice on my skin. I tend to use mineral foundations (BE, Smashbox Glow) but I was looking for a liquid that had a similar finish and wouldn’t clog my pores. I think I found it!

Worst beauty experiences? Ummm…I honestly can’t think of much. Maybe going through of my makeup and realizing just how much money I’ve spent on all of this stuff! Yeesh!

    Best:
I’ve been using Stila’s mango crush lip/cheek stain (yum!) on my cheeks for that awesome natural flush. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago, so I’m really glad I spent the money on it. It doesn’t feel heavy and it certainly doesn’t go away if you have an oily face.

    Worst:
Lots of bad hair days (weather has been rainy, rainy, rainy, cold, and rainy). Uneven skin tone and looking kinda sallow this week, too. Maybe it’s just the weather making me feel like my skin isn’t great. I also feel like my pores and blackheads on my nose are throwing flash grenades at people — LOOK AT ME!!!. That whole bag. Yuck.

Actually, I haven’t! I’ve been trying it like this: Click the pen two or three times, brush it onto my cheeks in a couple of stripes on the apples and then use my middle finger to (QUICKLY!!) rub it into the right places. The only complaint I have is that if you’re not quick enough, this stuff will just straight up dry on you in the most unsightly manner.

If I had some of those sponge wedges I think I’d wet them and ring them out so it’s still moist, then do everything the same way with the exception of rubbing it into place with the wedge instead, in hopes that it won’t dry nearly as fast.

Ahh, so the secret *is* to be quick with them! I’ve tried them as lip stains so far, and wow, have I learned that I HAVE to be quick with them! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten uneven coverage or had to touch up with lip balm. That experience has held me back from putting the stains anywhere near my cheeks!

The damp sponge is a really great idea; I’ll be sure to try it out. 🙂 Thanks! I wish the consistency was more like Benetint or High Beam, though not as creamy. Oh well!

Best: Looking back at old pictures and seeing how much my skin has cleared up! Which reminds me, it’s almost time to replace my jar of DDF Sulfur Mask (which is a serious miracle worker – it cured my acne!)

Worst: My hands and feet have been chapping a ton lately, and I’m not sure why since spring’s just around the corner and winter’s nearly gone.

Best, I bought the very last bottle of Essie Turquoise and Calcos nailpolish at my local beauty boutique. I can’t stop looking at my nails because the colour is so yummy. I have been getting lots of lovely compliments for the colour.

Worst, I was cleaning and organizing my nailpolish stash and realize in horror that my Chanel Le Vernis in Kaliedoscope has been leaking because i haven’t closed it properly and the bottle tipped over, resulting in waste product. God knows how much I lost, because the last time I touched the bottle was in November.

Best: I got my box from the Sephora 15% off sale! I’ve already used the MUFE eyeliner I received and one of the Sephora by OPI polishes that comes in their spring four pack. My toenails are a shimmering purple and they look lovely!

Worst: I got a MASSIVE zit near my mouth. Usually, I get little zits that are easy to cover. Oh no, this one is huge and EXTREMELY RED. I’m considering faking a beauty mark.

Best: Stocked up at Ulta since they had a bunch of promotions. Bought 2 Essie polishes and got 1 free. Got an Ecotools retractable powder brush and got a 2nd half off for my mom. Best part — they were giving you $5 coupons for every $20 you spent and they calculated my coupons based on my pre-discount total and rounded up so I got 3 coupons for $57 worth of stuff even though I only spent $32! Woo hoo! And now I get to go back next week and get $15 free indulgence. I’m thinking bright polishes for my toes in colors I’ve been too chicken to wear.

Worst: Major dry patches on my cheeks. My skin had calmed down after a harsh winter and I don’t know what is up now. I got a small bottle of Josie Maran’s 100% Argan Oil for my hair during Sephora’s sale and I’m going to see if that’ll work its magic on my cheeks.

My best would be trying out my new Bobbi Brown Orchid Color Strip and found that matte eyeshadows do work for me. And also discover the Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange body butter which is so my type of fragrance and really moisturizes my skin.

Worst…this week, my break-out has lessened….well, it should be a good experience. For the past few weeks, I found zit popping out quite often, but this week, so far no new ones. and the existing ones are drying up and resolving. *fingers crossed

Best: Ok, I got two. Firstly, I got Murad Acne Spot Treatment. Freaking awesome! All the little pimples on my cheeks have gone down and don’t feel like they’re going to turn into big nasties any time soon. Secondly, I finally cracked open up Hard Candy Baked Blush in Pin Up and Honeymoon that I got a few weeks ago. They are gorgeous and cheap! I am so glad I went to Walmart 🙂

Worst: I finished up my first tube each of MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator & Thermal Mask at the same time. This just happened today, but that’s alright, I have 4 backups of each. 🙂

Best: Buying my first bottle of MUFE HD Foundation yesterday! The color matches my skin *perfectly* and I get good coverage without the scary-white-overly pale foundation face I had with my previous foundation.
Worst: Struggling a lot with learning how to apply eyeliner. I tried MAC’s Fluidline and for the life of me I can’t draw a straight line with the 263 brush. Switched to MUFE’s Aqua Eyes and that seems a tad more promising, but I still have a looooooooong way to go.

When I first started applying eyeliner, I was pretty bad at it too. All I can say is, practice practice practice! And start off with pencils; they’re much easier (MUFE Aqua Eyes is a great choice!). Gel liners tend to be trickier, but you’ll get the hang of them in time! 🙂

Lily – how coincidental that you have a bottle of Bobbi Brown foundation to get through, because the not-so-great foundation I was referring to was Bobbi Brown!! Funny. 🙂 I’m thinking of swapping it away on makeupalley because I can’t make myself use it. It really accentuates the dark circles under my eyes because the shade is too pale. Too bad I didn’t notice it earlier.
