What’s Your Least Favorite Beauty Ritual?

October 7th, 2009 by Karen 53 Comments

100709-least-favorite-beauty-ritual

No matter how many times I’ve done it myself at home, hair coloring is just not one of my talents.

It’s like I’m finger painting with dye all over my face, the bathroom, my clothes… sometimes even a little in my hair. 🙂

Lovely.

Wouldn’t be so bad if the end results were better, but they’re usually a little off, with overly dark patches here and there.

That’s why I look forward to those rare trips to the salon to get my roots done. I’ll mark appointments on my calendar weeks out.

It’s definitely a splurge… I could save money by always coloring at home, but the results with a pro’s help are just so much better than mine. I tell myself it’s cool as long as I do my own waxing and painting my nails.

What’s the bane of your beauty existence? Is it shaving, plucking, coloring or painting your nails? Do you wish someone else could exercise for you? Would you rather face hordes of ravenous zombies than have to pluck your eyebrows? What’s your least favorite beauty ritual and why?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

oh my goodness there are so many things I hate about beauty rituals. but I’m horrible at plucking my eyebrows.
i let them either get bushy ish(i at least try and pluck a few strays) or i have a friend wax/pluck/thread them so i dont have to pay to get it done

Plucking. I hate it. Tweezers are very addicting for me and I have a hard time stopping. I just threw my (cheap) tweezers out so I can give my brows a chance to grow. So, I’m tweezerless for the moment. I know there a lot of other girls have trichotillomania in terms of pulling their own hair out with their hands but mine is tweezers. Give me a pair of tweezers and I’ll pluck for no reason it seems. Time to enter Tweezing Detox.

I stopped coloring my hair last year. It’s an expensive and smelly habit. I’ve gotten more compliments on my natural hair color than any of the times I’ve colored my hair. It’s really strange!

Oh my. Waxing my ‘stache makes me feel so manly… until I’m done, then I feel like a pretty pretty princess. 🙂 And waxing my legs HURTS, but it’s so worth the smooth, hairless legs for days.

My eyebrows are blond enough that I can go 4-6 weeks between waxings–thank goodness.

What I really hate is doing my mascara. I have thick, but short and pale blond lashes. They’re forever clumpy. Ick.

I could never do home coloring, just like I could never do my own dentistry!

Is it weird that I don’t *have* a least favourite beauty routine? I mean, I don’t love waxing my upper lip when my skin is sensitive, and I’m not big on shaving when I’ve hurt my back… but on a normal day, I kinda love ’em all.

(Unlike you, I absolutely adore hair colour! Whether I’m doing it or getting it done, I’m totally at peace with a brush, bowl, and colour codes. Ahh, the smell of the Schwartzkopf Igora Royal colour line… it’s like the calming scent of lavender for a girl like me.)

I don’t mind doing my eyebrows – in fact, the only way I’ve been good at doing my own tweezing is to do it during my study breaks in high school and college, as a way of keeping myself from snoozing all over my homework. 😉

De-fuzzing my upper lip, on the other hand? HATE. I have problems with taking a tweezer to the mustache area. I hate the fact that bleaching only gives me a mustache and at-home waxing kits don’t work on my face. So, of course, I have a professional do it for me… and even then.

Another thing that I don’t hate, but don’t really enjoy doing on my own: pedicures. In fact, anything nail-related drives me crazy – I’m OK with the cutting and cuticle-removing… but totally inept when it comes to putting on polish *and* keeping the stuff on my nails. 🙁

My least favorite is definitely maintaining my eyebrows. No matter how good I am with keeping up plucking, I just can’t seem to keep them in shape or trim the longer hairs just right… so I get mine waxed every 3 months or so.

Other than that, I hate shaving… but I still do it lol.

Kate & Zena hit the nail on the head with the trichotillomania. The second I get stressed, hello uneven eyebrows! Eff! But hair removal would definitely be the bane of my existence. Shaving, plucking, waxing – I do it all myself (and do a pretty damn good job me thinks), but it’s so painstaking and such a hassle!

I really don’t like painting my finger nails that much. I’m incredibly clumsy with my left hand, and so I can’t paint my right nails as perfect as my left hand nails (I’m right-handed). And, the scent of nail polish isn’t exactly enticing, either. So, I usually just paint my fingers with sheer pink/corals or ones with iridisence–they’re nearly foolproof. I’m fine with painting my toes, though. 🙂

It’s a toss up between hair removal and painting my toenails. Shaving my legs is such a chore, so I usually skip it. But they’re really sparse and take a long time to grow back, and you can’t really see them, so yay for me! Painting my toenails is also time consuming so I usually do it when I’m watching TV. But I hate when it smudges! Then I have to do it all over again. Le sigh.

I despise painting my nails more than anything else in the entire world. I never get it right, so I end up with polish all over the place, then have to take even more time to clean up with a q-tip dipped in polish remover. And I’m using a dark color, forget it; it stains my skin and the whole process just takes forever. Waiting for nails to dry kills me cause you can’t do anyhthing.

And the sad part is, I think manicures are a total waste of money, so I rarely get them. I just walk around with chipped polish, looking messy.

    Hi Karen,

My least fav thing is going to the salon and getting my color/cut done. I go every 8-9 weeks and have been for (gulp) about 15 years now.

I have had WAY too many hair color disasters at home while trying to do color myself! I just can’t stand sitting there on a Saturday morning for 2 1/2-3 hours, it drives me bonkers but my natural hair color will not cut it!

Oh I’m also extremely sick of putting on anti-wrinkle stuff every morning and night also, but I only see that increasing in the future, sigh.

I actually enjoy the majority of my DIY beauty rituals, especially manis and pedis. But I’m with you with the dying of the hair. Unfortunately, my hair went prematurely gray, and I have no choice but to dye it. Since I can’t afford to get it done, I have to do it myself, and since it grows so fast (used to be a good thing), I have to color on average every four weeks. I’ve gotten a lot better at it, but it’s still really hard to do a root application on myself.

Oh… where to begin? I find a lot of beauty rituals unpleasant (but necessary 🙂 ). I hate shaving (like one of you said earlier, I always miss a spot or I get goosebumps in the shower and it hurts to shave). I don’t like having to cover up my dark circles in the morning. It’s probably one of the longest steps out of my makeup ritual and it has to be done every day. I also dislike washing my hair just because it takes so long to wash, comb out, and dry… and once it’s wet, it has to be restraightened. Of course, after the rituals are done, I feel better having done them… 😀
