MAC Limited Edition Photographs by Helmut Newton Collection

Generally, I like to shoot with my big, scary camera, because there’s something about being a small girl carrying a big, scary camera. Nobody ever questions you. Like, I could go anywhere with that big, scary camera, and nobody messes with me. It’s true. It’s absolutely true.

But there are times when I don’t want to carry a big, scary camera with me, and that’s when I carry my little Sony point-and-shoot.

I bring this bad boy with me everywhere
I love this glorious camera and bring this bad boy with me everywhere…

The Sony DSC-RX100 is one of my favorite cameras of all time. I’ve shot with several, and this one is my ride-or-die. It’s small, sturdy and portable. Mine is the first generation model from four years ago, so it’s been through quite a lot. There are newer models with more bells and whistles on them (here’s the brand new version), but I’m still very happy with this one.

I can take it anywhere, so if I need to go incognito, it’ll fit it in the palm of my hand. And it takes GREAT pictures — almost as great as my big, scary camera — and that’s because it has a 1-inch sensor, which in non-photography talk means that it lets in more light and captures more detail than the small sensor on an iPhone.

MBB Fun Fact: I use it for all of the swatches on the blog because it’s easy to handle, and I like the way it captures color.

Anyway, I’m talking about this right now in a longwinded way because of the new MAC Point ‘N’ Shoot Eye Shadow X 4 palette from the Limited Edition Photographs by Helmut Newton collection.

It has four cool-toned mattes, which I would normally be ecstatic about, but they seem kinda patchy and sheer…

MAC Limited Edition Photographs by Helmut Newton “…celebrates the erotically charged and elegant work of legendary photographer, Helmut Newton. A regular contributor to Vogue and Vanity Fair, Newton is known for his precise, glamorous and empowering photography of women. This limited-edition color collection captures the photographer’s provocative, exquisite taste, dressing wine-stained lips in sultry rogue while darkening eyes in the black and white shades of his signature aesthetic. Nails are lacquered in colors inspired by Monte Carlo and Berlin, two of his homes. A selection of Newton’s most iconic photographs adorns the bespoke packaging — his work remains as distinctive and influential as ever.”

And MAC Senior Vice President/Creative Director James Gager says, “I have always greatly admired Helmut Newton’s work — the precision and glamour of his images, as well as the strength and elegance of the women that he photographed. It is an honor to be able to create a makeup collection that captures his provocative vision in a MAC way.”

I’m stoked about the three Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours in the release because you can’t really go wrong with the Retro Mattes. They’re always opaque, intensely pigmented, easy to put on, and you can see ’em from across a room.

The collection also has three re-promoted nail polishes and a Boot Black Liquid Liner and Upward Lash mascara in Upward Black.

It’s a small collection, but anything photography related always, always grabs my attention.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Thanks for the tip on the camera, Karen! I wonder if the newest one that’s coming out is worth twice the price of what looks to be the next-most-recent version? And how can I tell if the other Sony DSC-RX100s on amazon have the feature you mentioned?

I love it that a big, scary camera turns you into an intimidating person who can go anywhere 🙂 — that’s a great skill to have in life! I’m very good at just walking into hospitals, because apparently I still look in some way like I belong, but I don’t feel like I can just walk in anywhere…

This eyeshadow palette is killing me. The two mid-tone shades look like they would be purr-fect hood/crease/blending shades for me… but I’m not hearing the greatest things about quality, and am not excited about the other two shades. Not sure what to do here… the two shades I’m interested in don’t look all that easy to dupe.

BTW, I decided that, if I don’t get the Victoria Beckham X Estee Lauder eyeshadow palette, or at least look at it and try it out, it might not be an epic regret on the order of missing out on Prism, but it’s going to turn into a serious regret. So I ordered it! At least, with Net-A-Porter, if I seriously don’t like it, I can return it. I wish there was somewhere nearby where I could swatch before buying, but there isn’t, so this is the next best thing. I’d rather skip a couple of other products that don’t grab me quite so hard.

You’re welcome! I think the newest Sony, the DSC-RX100 V, has the same sensor size. I just read a review of it and it sounds great (OMG, the tilted screen! It’s the little things…).

Re: the eyeshadow palette, just skip it. The shadows are pretty sheer and there’s other things to get excited about LIKE THE VICTORIA BECKHAM PALETTE. I really hope you love it as much as I do. I did a couple looks yesterday with some other palettes (Urban Decay, Laura Mercier), and the entire time I kept thinking, “Why is it sort hard to work with these?” and I think it’s because the VB palette has spoiled me for everything else.

Speaking of Prism, check this out:

The Be Fabulous quad has colors that look somewhat similar!

Wowee that’s a expensive camera. Do you think a iPhone is a good enough camera for swatching Karen? Is there another one less then this one you like?

      Hi Mave,

You can get some pretty good shots with an iPhone, but I think swatches have more detail when you use a Sony or a DSLR.

I’ve been wanting to get a new camera and I definitely like the idea of having a lighter, more compact camera like the Sony!

As for the Helmut Newton collab, the quad just looks sooooooo similar to the Brant Brothers quad. Easy skip for me.

A lighter camera is definitely handy to have.

I really, like the packaging and the pictures they choose.
My pictures are usually taken with the big camera as well, but I recently got a point and shoot one fro vlogging and enjoy using it when I am out and about. Never really got on board with using my iPhone for that.

The Nikon Coolpix S9900. It is not the best out there, but enough for my needs and didn´t break the bank.

Those lip colors are amazing. Way too wild for me but I can see you rocking them! 🙂

I still have an iPhone 4s and don’t want to upgrade because I like the small size and because it takes really good pics. The Hubs has one, too, and his pics are terrible. It’s the strangest thing. Thanks for the point-and-shoot rec. We’re always on the lookout for something compact and easy to use that gives great results.

How odd! Maybe his camera is broken? I had to bring my previous iPhone into the Apple store because the camera was wonky right out of the gate. It had this weird haze to it and every shot I took looked like it was taken in the fog! The photo discrepancy between your phones could also be because you have a steadier hand. If your hubby shakes or moves the camera when he hits the shutter button, that’ll result in blurry pics.

Yes, that’s definitely it about the fog/lack of focus. You just know I put on a show about how *I* simply had more ability. Then I used his to illustrate the point, and the pics were still terrible. HAHA! We thought it might be his case, casting a shadow, so we removed that. Still no luck. We should have taken it back, years ago. He just generally brings a cheap point-and-click that takes OK pics with him. I’m totally eyeing your rec, though. Maybe for him for xmas. 🙂 It would be nice for the Hawaii trip. Oh, and btw, I found out a few days ago that I will be going to Hong Kong for work next month (just for a week). Should be an experience!!

Love this collection. I’ve just emailed them asking if this will be available in stores in my homecity. I like instant gratification. I plan to purchase the eyeshadow palette and the Self Portrait lipstick.
