Springy and Smokey! Smokey Brown and Purple Cat Eyes and a Bright Coral Lip With New Makeup From Benefit, Dior and Smashbox

March 3rd, 2015 by Karen 27 Comments

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette

The sun’s out, I’m not wearing socks (FOOT FREEDOM!), I am wearing coral lipstick, and the eye look I tried this morning did not result in a complete disaster…

Yeah, it’s been a terrific Tuesday so far. 🙂

Today I felt springy and, I dunno, kinda smokey, so this purply brown smokey eye with soft cat eye liner happened.

Note to self: do this liner more often! It’s fairly easy — just black eye pencil with a dark shimmery purple shadow blended on top with a pencil brush — and it takes about half the time as a super crisp black cat liner, otherwise known as “the time-suck of my makeup existence.”

As a side, am I the only person who regularly attempts black cat liner when there’s, like, absolutely no time to get ready, and then inevitably ends up with their two tiny kitten flicks morphing into huge, unsymmetrical bat wings that don’t match?

Yargh.

Siri, remind me to wear soft cat eyeliner like this the next time I need to be saved from myself.

Oh! — this look was also an excuse to try a few new products from Benefit, Dior and Smashbox.

Some quick notes…

  • Benefit’s new Roller Lash curling mascara — This stuff is black, and glossy, and it lifts and curls lashes, but you absolutely, positively must comb out your lashes while they’re wet; otherwise, they’ll stick together like mean girls in the cafeteria.
  • Dior’s Nude Air Serum Foundation — This lightweight, medium-coverage hybrid skin care serum/foundation looks amazing on the skin. My homegirl at Sephora hooked me up (‘sup Nini!) with a fatty-bo-batty sample in shade 040, and when I finish it…I’m probably gonna throw down 53 large ($53) for a full-size replacement.

    Yeah, that good.

  • Smashbox Double Exposure Palette — Yep, these gorgeous, mostly cool-toned shades are a dream to blend.

Key products I used for this look

Key products I’m wearing in this look

  1. Chanel Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow in Poesie (I wet the dark purple shade and used it for the cat eyeliner)
  2. Smashbox Double Exposure Palette (Beige shade buffed all over the lids, and the purple and brown shades swept into the crease)
  3. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Tan
  4. Diorskin Nude Air Serum Foundation in 040 Honey Beige
  5. MAC Lip Pencil in Fruit Cocktail
  6. MAC Lipstick in Ravishing
  7. NARS Dual Intensity Blush in Panic (I mixed both shades together)
  8. NARS Dual Intensity Blush in Jubilation (peach shade applied as a highlighter)
  9. Rimmel Natural Bronzer in 033 Sun Bronze
  10. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
  11. Rouge Bunny Rouge Feline Gaze Eye Pencil in Salome

Smashbox Double Exposure Palette

Wouldn’t this be super cute with a big, messy bun, pearl earrings and a floral-print dress? Next time someone invites me to high tea (hint, hint… LET’S DO IT!!!), I’m gonna rock it.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Lovely look! Absolutely looking forward to the release of the new NARS Dual Intensity blushes. Both of the two sets you used look beautiful on you. And I may have to try the smokey purple eyeshadow look. I’m such a creature of habit but I might actually be able to DO this 🙂

I will be doing High Tea this afternoon and would be glad If you joined in! Downside, you have to get to Singapore in approximately six hours from now, but the 360* view from Marina Bay Sands Roof Top Restaurant will be worth it…

OMG I was at my Sephora today and I asked for a sample in 10 Ivory and was told that they weren’t allowed to give out samples of that foundation! I was like, “how am I supposed to know if I want to buy it if I can’t try it?” and she said, “well… you could put it on in the store!” Nope, not good enough. I couldn’t believe it! She said that their trainer told them it separates in the sample container or something and that’s why they can’t give out samples. Whatever. I’ll try my Nordstrom next.

someone told me that about the new BE tinted foundation stuff too. SO, the answer to that? Buy it and if it’s not up to snuff, return it. Soon they will get the message to give you a sample.

And, I do have to question, does it separate in the regular bottle? if so, isn’t it even harder to mix back up? just curious…

(p.s. if I don’t get back to this post it’s because sometimes I’m a goof and forget)

That’s so stupid! But I’m not surprised that it happened at Sephora :/ You should try at a department store, I got a large sample at a Neiman Marcus without any problem. And I absolutely loved it, like, it’s a life-changer for me. I will totally buy it when I’m done with the sample!

I agree with Melissa, how do you always look perfect in everything?? Is there any color of lipstick, blush or eyeshadow that doesn’t look good on you?

On a side note, I need a sample of this Dior foundation ASAP! I have heard nothing but great things about it.

There is always so much to comment on in your posts! OK, first of all, the return of that necklace made me very happy. It’s one of my favorites on you because of all the fun colors. 🙂

I also think your coral lip is awesome and that Dior foundation looks flawless.

Lastly, I love your product pic and how you numbered everything. I’m sure that was time consuming but it’s a really cool and helpful idea.

I think you nailed the cat eye look. The eyes look defined without the liner looking too sharp.

      Hi Amy,

Isn’t that necklace so fun? It’s the Neon Spray Necklace by Kristin Perry. She’s an independent designer out of LA. You should check out her stuff! It’s beautiful and not too crazy expensive.

      Hi Sherry,

Those two are easily in my MAC top 10 lipsticks. 🙂

What do you think of Girl About Town? I’ve been loving on that one lately too.

Love this look! I’m putting the Smashbox palette on The List for the next Sephora trip. I was feeling springy and smokey today, too. It was the second Spring-ish day in a row here… and a house two blocks over burned to a crisp, so the whole neighborhood was feeling smokey!!

Hi Karen, I think one of these days I’ll have to try “Girl About Town.” It’s a really nice bright pink. I’ve actually never tried it on. My other two favorites beside Ravishing and Impassioned, are Fanfare and Costa Chic. I’m a redhead with really dark brown eyes, so those colors seem to suit me well. Funny story for you. Yesterday my daughter was at a doctor’s appointment, so I ran over to the MAC counter at Macy’s. I was over there at least 45 minutes trying lipsticks on. They probably thought I would never leave. LOL!! I ended up trying Angel and Creme Cup, but they didn’t look so flattering on me. I left with Lustering on my lips, but I didn’t purchase it. Maybe “Girl About Town” could be a new choice for me. We shall see. Take Care!!
