Does Your Beauty Routine Change in the Fall?

October 20th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

makeup-and-beauty-blog-102009

Mine does, for sure.

A few of the things I do when the leaves begin to fall…

  • I switch to richer moisturizers on my face and body (to compensate for moisture-sapping colder temps)
  • I wear darker lipstick colors and more frequent smokey eyes
  • I spritz on fragrances with heavier notes like musk and rose

How about you? Have you changed your beauty routine for fall?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I usually switch from pink to coral blushes, i can’t put my finger on why but orangy blushes look too overdone in summer

Yes mine does also. I go for darker lipsticks and also have to apply thick lotion daily to my calves. They get so dry from running my space heater all day long in my cubicle! 🙂

I do change things about my beauty routine, not my skincare too much because I am pretty much oily/combo alll year round. I do wear smokey eyes more (love them) i don’t play up my lips much, but I love the darker lips. My body moisturizer gets a little heavier.

    -Darker nail color
-I have a higher tendency to wear fragrance in cooler temperature (like 0% in summer and 0.5% in fall…)
-I start to ditch sunscreen without feeling that guilty (OK, I know I am not supposed to do this)
-I tend to go for peachy lip gloss (I like fuchsia during summer)I am with Lauren when it comes to wearing warm color in summer…

Funny, I am also drawn to smokey eyes since it got cold! And I like my rose scents again. Otherwise I can use my rosecream from Dr. Hauschka, just once in a while but it is an indulgence because of the scent. Rosier it can’t get!
And I have much more often a bath with some of my bodyoils. Good idea btw… I like now everything with roses, soft colours, and soft smelling bodylotions. That’s a great poll again, thank you!
Karen, you do a great job with this blog, wonder if you decide to make a living from that only? You are really inspiring. Hope to have more time soon and invest a bit more time in my blog too, but I will stick to blogging in german:-)

Btw: Do you think people are interested in the person, too? I did not dare to make photos of me in the blog, also because I trully do not have an awesome skin 🙁 but maybe it keeps it real. Whatcha think?

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, there are four seasons. I have vitually no storage space in my home. I can only store two season’s worth of clothing in my closets. The other stuff, I pack into large plastic bins in the basement. I change clothing (heavier and darker colors). I also change my lippie colors from pinks, coral, peaches to berries, reds, browns. Gone are the flowers in my garden and also in my fragrances. I bring out my spicier, woodier, muskier scents since they are more wearable in the cold weather. I also change the body soap or cleanser that I use because we have forced air heat and this is terrible drying to the body. I don’t know if you are like me, but I never wear the same lipstick two days in a row. That is a subtle hint that I have too too many. Makeup and fragrance are like clothing and ways for us beauties to express ourselves. In answer to your question about my life’s purpose. No, I have not found it yet. I thought that I had it but I didn’t. But here is a secret that part of the purpose is the actual journey itself so no part of it should ever be boring. And also I do subscribe to that adage, “Do what you love, and the money will follow.” I hope that you love what you do because even if you don’t, all of your readers love it and you. Louise

Sure do. Use a slightly richer face moisturizer, dust off the blow dryer (refuse to use it in heat/humidity), take a lot more baths, scale back on pedicures and up deep conditioning for my hair.

For sure. I definitely move towards the warmer, muskier scents, as well as a slightly darker eye. I find it hard to wear warmer colors (orange, peach) and tend towards darker, cooler colors (berries, browns). As much as I want to wear that coral lip tint in October, I just can’t do it, lol! I tend to paint my nails more in the fall/winter more often, as well, keeping to the darker colors.

My makeup routine stays pretty consistent, but i get more pale so i use different bronzer/blush. I have to use richer moisturizers on face and body and sometimes I skip out on toner. I have a favorite fall scent that I also bust out 🙂 but I’ve always been too afraid to try dark lips!

I also switch to richer moisturizers for face and body. For makeup I use waterproof mascaras and eyeliners more often, as it rains a lot in the west coast. For colour I wear wines and berries more often. I like to put some baby oil or essential oils in my bath water.

    hey karen 🙂

i switch to a thicker moisturizer like you pointed out, and use product with more oils, waxes & butters on the body. i also make sure to carry a good moisturizing cream and lip balm (my favorites: j.r. watkins body cream and the body shop cocoa butter lip care stick).

i also need to switch to a thicker conditioner for my hair, or it tends to get very dry.

makeup-wise i go from an NC20 to an NC15 in concealer, and use a paler blush that’s more cool toned (BB nectar –> slopes, NARS orgasm –> mata hari/angelika). i also use a lip gloss/tint during the day that is still muted but not as candy-colored (e.g. stila raspberry lip glaze/maybelline shiny-licious in strawberry tart – clear, juicy/jelly finish sheer tints –> MAC prrr, clinique superbalm in currant – flushed lips, but not hot pink or anything)

for nighttime, i go from technicolor eyes (blues, teals, greens) and sheer juicy lips (think cellophane textured pinks and fuchsias) to rich lips with retro liner (bold red, like russian red, or fuchsia, like NARS funny face) or smoky eyes with a gray/gray-brown or purplish base paired with a nude lip.

my nails stay the same – pale pink on the hands, usually red or fuchsia on the toes, although in fall/winter i also wear colors like garnet (my favorite: essie thigh high) and burgundy.

i’ll stop with the ranting now, but bottom line – it does change a bit!

I don’t change anything at all. I don’t go with the wardrobe and makeup colors you’re supposed to do when the seasons change. I do what I want. I’m a rebel. LOL

But seriously, the changes I make, if any, depend on how I feel and not the season.

ps – i agree with you on the scents too – i go from crisper scents, even in the evening (e.g. l’eau d’issey by issey miyake, carolina herrera 212) to richer ones (e.g. etat libre d’orange rossy de palma, bulgari blu).

Lotion, lotion, lotion. Or should I say cream? The skin on my body tends to get very dry and I slather on a ton of lotion. My face gets tricky — patches of dry skin but still a bit of shine to my cheeks and some breakouts. Gentle cleansers like Cerave are a must for me but that means a two-step process with makeup remover. I go into lipgloss overdrive to keep the chapped lips at bay. I do tend to use more pigmented glosses.

Hey – have you noticed that Benefit’s Matterial Girl disappeared even before it ever really debuted? It never made it to any of the department store counters near me in Boston or DC, any Sephoras, and is now off their website. I was intereseted in trying it but guess not.

I like to change my colors up a little bit. I go from reds and greens to more dark and moody colours like purple and dark blue. I have been using my new collection of Be PRO makeup from my local salon so far and it has been going great!

I use a richer face cream and tend to wear sheer brown lipstick (gloss becomes a no-no because of the wind!) and for some reason I do really bold, colourful eye makeup…maybe to cheer myself up?! And lots of Burberry Weekend perfume! I also rely heavily on illuminators and highlighters- I live and work in London where it just tends to be grey and dark throughout Fall so I need a glowiness boost!

Well since i’m in highschool, i have limited makeup so i pretty much keep everything the same. The only thing that really changes is that i hardly ever have time or effort to do anything but eyeliner and mascara on my eyes since school has been getting crraaazzay.

My makeup routine doesn’t change drastically, but I definitely slather on the moisturizer. Winters are brutal here, so I usually have to go all out – face moisturizer, hand moisturizer, body lotion, and tons of chapstick!

My routine changes in that I add a tinted moisturizer to my routine instead of just powder. I don’t wear perfume cause I’m allergic to the smell, so that doesn’t change. I’m looking to venture out & try more smokey eye looks. ☺

I definitely change it up a bit when fall rolls around. I start wearing more moisturizer on my face (and body in general actually), and also start putting glossing cream in my hair so it doesn’t get fried by indoor heating. Makeup-wise, I don’t change my base, but I do start going for darker colors that seemed too heavy for spring and summer.

I wear darker lips, full out smokey eyes. Darker polish. Hair is chocolate brown.
I use Eucherin (sp) I use it can’t spell it as a moisturizer every night. Soaks right in. Yup, the big round tub. It’s like $ 11 bucks. No wrinkles here.
I started using Iman base. it is oil free and comes in a range of colors for my full out tan until I am pale winter,
I always wear “O” lipstick by MAC, It is the chamelon of lipsticks.
Chanel- inlove blush. Just enough color – it matches everything.
Black liner- urban decay- the best- it stays on forever or until you take it off!

Hi Karen! I actually switch out my makeup with the change of seasons. I usually also use a heavier moisturizer, which I’m in need of right now. I put away all my bronzers, bright and vivid eye shadows, and bright pinkish and peachy lip colors. Then I bust out my dark, vampy lipsticks and lipliners, murkier blushes, and dark smokey eyeshadows. The only thing that goes lighter is my foundation. No matter what makeup brand I’m using, I find that my skin tone falls between two shades and I can usually wear both interchangeably (or even blended when I can’t decide!). In summer I go slightly darker, and in winter I go lighter. I feel like it makes for a better canvas for those deeper and often cooler shades of fall and winter. In spring/summer my look is more fun and lighthearted, but in fall/winter, it’s more romantic and sophisticated. That way I get to reflect different sides of myself all year. 🙂 My favorite part is the many different shades of darker than dark nail polish!

    Hi Karen!
With four seasons in the Northeast, my Fall routine has me changing my skincare routine, utilizing heavier moisturizers. I tend to wear more makeup as the weather gets cooler, using deeper colors on lips. And who doesn’t love all the new color collections all the makeup greats put out during the season!
