Splurge or Steal: Get Shu-Like False Lashes for Less with Make Up For Ever

July 14th, 2008 by Karen 18 Comments

Shu Uemura has the market cornered on high fashion, drag queen-esque, stage worthy false lashes, but Shu’s false lash fabulousness comes at a steep price — a single pair of their most dramatic lashes can set you back $50 or more!

No problem. Budget divas need look no further than the Make Up For Ever counter at their nearby Sephora.

At each Sephora Make Up For Ever Lash Bar, lash pairs cost just $14 each. I think they compare well with most Shu Uemura lashes in terms of craftsmanship and design. No doubt, Shu makes some of the most unbelievably beautiful lashes in the world, but let’s face it: they ain’t cheap. With over 50 styles to choose from, the Make Up For Ever Lash Bar has lashes for just about every occasion. You can go from tame (long and black) to outrageous (teal and blue two-inch feathers) without breaking the bank.

I love the hot pink, polka-dotted “Heidi” pair pictured at the top. Maybe I can rock those on my next trip to Safeway! 🙂 I also like the neon green pair pictured below.

Make Your Lashes Last

To be able to reuse a pair of Make Up For Ever false lashes over and over again, you need to keep them looking fresh. Desmond, a makeup artist and lash expert friend of mine at the Sephora store in Novato, California suggests the following:

  1. Avoid putting mascara on your false lashes.
  2. When removing them, be sure to remove all of the adhesive from the lash strip.
  3. Gently pull (don’t yank) to remove.
  4. Once removed, immediately place lashes back into their storage box with the lash strip along the curve to retain their original shape.

Desmond says that with careful lash removal and storage, you can get as many as 10 good uses out of a single $14 pair.

I have no idea where I’d ever wear neon green lashes, but I’m strangely comforted by the knowledge that I could afford to get a pair of them if I needed to, LOL. False eyelash fabulousness for less than two bucks per use? That’s cheaper than a Starbucks latte!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Wow, Tyra Banks must be really happy! I have never worn fake lashes before. Even the shortest lashes are too long for me. The first pink pair of lashes looks awesome. When you rock it, please take a picture for the rest of us to see 😀

    Hi Dao,

I have NO IDEA where I’d wear those. I wish I could say my life was so fab that I could wear them every day, but sadly, it ain’t that glamorous, LOL! 🙂

Those pink lashes are fab…but event specific and as you say, not sure what the event is!

I’ve got a few pairs of false lashes and I’ve never worn them. I’m sure they look amazing but I’m just too lazy for it. I don’t even curl my lashes before mascara so falsies have no hope!

    Karen,
That’s OK. None of us are in ANTM or Project Runway anyways. At least you can wear them indoors or be brave and wear to the parking lot and back. I do agree those lashes are very event specific. If you wish hard enough, the event will come!

If there’s any place to rock leopard print lashes, its Safeway. I’m also loving the neon green. Maybe next time I’m in Sephora I’ll pick up a set to wear on my birthday.

Oh my god I love these so much. I haven’t been in Sephora in like 6 months so I didn’t even know they had a lash bar. I loooooove fake lashes. I can’t believe the’re only 14 dollars. That is so awesome.

    Hi Beth,

I hear ya. I have some false lashes that are waiting to come out and play. I guess I could wear them to work just for fun one day to freak people out, LOL.

Girl, you are so lucky you don’t have to curl your lashes. I practically have my Shu lash curler surgically attached to my hand. I can’t live without that thing!

    Hi Georgia,

Right? You will look so right as you buy bananas and asparagus when you rock those lashes in the produce aisle.

These lashes are definitely birthday worthy. Is yours coming up soon?

Those pink polka dotted lashes are amazing! They look so fun. I like the neon green ones too. I have absolutely no idea where I would wear them or why I would buy them though 😛

    Hi Karen,
I love your blog! You aren’t just informative, but I love your spunk. I’ve recently discovered your blog and have been reading at least once a day. I have a question for you about when to put on falsh lashes. Do you put it on after everything on the eye or before the shadow and liner? How do you make sure it stays on?

    Hey Kay-

U r my savior! These r so friggin sick!!! I have fallen in love with falsies ever since I laid my beedy little eyes on Shu’s Toyko Lash Bar. I literally had to scrape my mouth off of the floor when I first saw them!!! I’m really not that dramatic hehehe
