Take Your Nude Lip Looks to the Next Level With This Quick Makeup Tip

July 24th, 2012 by Karen 23 Comments

lip makeup tip

I realize I look a little crazy-pants in this pic, but there is a method to my madness, LOL!

Talking about Big Baby Plushglass yesterday reminded me of one of my favorite makeup tricks for nude lip looks.

After I finish applying concealer under my eyes, I take the leftover product on my brush, and run it across my lips. The thin layer of concealer evens out my natural lip color and creates a blank canvas for nude lip liners, lipsticks or glosses applied on top. It also allows more of the nude lip color to show through.

If you have very pigmented lips, and nude lip glosses like Big Baby look almost like clear glosses on your kisser, this little tip can really help bring out the nude in nude lip colors.

Here I’m wearing MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW 25, which I also use under my eyes (I’m usually an NC, but I think the peachy tones in this NW shade offset the blues and purples in my dark circles — a trick I learned from a friendly MAC makeup artist), topped with Big Baby Plushglass, a plumping peach gloss with pink and white pearl.

I think you can really see a difference in the pics below. My lips are naturally quite pigmented with noticeable pink tones, so when I wear Big Baby by itself, it looks pink…but when I blank out my lips first with concealer, more of Big Baby’s peachy tones come through.

That’s Big Baby without concealer on the left, and with concealer on the right.

Kinda neat how the color looks completely different, right?

One last thing before I hit the treadmill this morning (if I don’t exercise soon, it ain’t gonna happen): crazy cat lady earrings!

I found these yesterday while rummaging through a box that went missing after our move three years ago. Through some magical twist of fate, it miraculously turned up the other day.

See the kitty silhouette there in the middle? So totally cat lady, LOL!

Anywho, happy Tuesday. I hope you have a most excellent day. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Great idea! I like to apply foundation or concealer just around the edges when I am doing a gradient lip look but never tried it all over the lip.

This is a great tip, I do the same thing but I use my foundation since I don’t wear concealer. But it definitely helps since I do have more pigmented lips and nude lipstick doesn’t always look nude on me.

You are one beautiful woman Karen!! I do this tip as well it makes a huge difference. I also use an eyeshadow brush to apply my lipsticks, it buffs the the pigment on and allows for precise thin layers over the undisturbed concealer. It makes a huge difference even with darker hues of lipsticks sans concealer. I can start with the look of a stain then build up to full on colour, then outline with a pencil. It also increases wear time.

Thanks for the great tips, Karen! I should look into NW concealers as well. The nude lips are adorable!

That’s a really cool tip 🙂 I’ve used foundation and highlighter on lips before to create something different, but never tried out this particular technique. Keep ’em coming!

Wow – huge difference in the color. I’m not a nude lip fan, myself, so I always think your pigmented lips make every gloss look better! 🙂

The earrings are really cute and remind me of the LeChat Nails logo.

Wonderful tip–I never get tired of nude lipstick (I always have 4 or 5 pale options in my handbag) and this looks beautiful on you!

Wow…that is one spot-on, lovely nude lip! I’ve tried foundation and concealed, but I find that it starts dissipating in the middle of the lip. Have you tried the Lip Plump lip primer by Benefit that neutralizes the lip color and acts as a color adhesive?

Does anyone else get dreadful results like I do with this tip?

If I get any foundation on my lips at all (and don’t remove it before appying lip colour) it inevitably shifts and creates a pale/white ‘tide-mark’ where the dry skin of my lips meet the wet/inside. It looks so gross, I deliberately remove any foundation first before applying lipcolour.

Perhaps because I’m relatively pale, the light foundation shows up on my darker lips, whereas you might not get that with darker skin??

    Anyone else experience this?

Loving your makeup tips lately, Karen! Your eye makeup always looks fantastic and I’m still struggling to recreate a similarly polished and flattering look (doesn’t help I never put shadow under my lower lashline..) but will have to keep practising. 🙂

Wow! Huge difference! I’ve honestly never bothered to conceal my lips but given how much I complain about the way lipsticks are affected by my lip’s natural pigmentation? I probably should start.
