Do you own a shade of eyeshadow, lipstick or nail polish that started you down a long and perhaps expensive makeup collecting path? I sure do, and her name is Chanel Black Satin (available now in the Chanel permanent collection).

I’ve been into nail polish for as long as I can remember, but there have been phases where I didn’t really think about it much for months at a time. I was in one of those slumbering “dry spells” when Chanel Black Satin came out.

Chanel Black Satin Nail Polish

When I first saw it in fashion magazines, I liked it, but I wasn’t completely smitten . I was, however, very interested in any black nail polish that had fashion editors and people in general going gaga.

The long-running Unsung Heroes series features much-loved permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands.

Previous to Chanel Black Satin, black nail polishes weren’t really ever seen on anyone other than musicians, artsy types and those into various genres of music, like punk rock, heavy metal and goth. Now, all the sudden it was going mainstream. After seeing it over and over, it started this spark within me that grew and grew, and I knew I HAD TO HAVE IT.

I searched high and low but couldn’t find it anywhere in stores. Finally, I resorted to eBay and spent more on it than I had ever spent on any nail polish before. A whopping $35! At the time, that seemed completely outrageous, but now, after many years of collecting, I can say that it’s not the most I’ve ever spent on a nail polish (yikes!).

Chanel Black Satin Nail Polish

Black Satin, as the name implies, has a black base with a silver satiny shimmer running throughout. It has a great smooth and creamy formula, and covers perfectly in two coats.

It might not be the most unique black polish out there anymore, but this beauty definitely started bringing dark nail shades back into the spotlight, and for that, I am grateful!

What item in your makeup collection do you have a great fondness for?

      Hi Sara,

It’s that Chanel secret sparkle. You gotta get it out in direct sunlight to see it. 🙂

Chanel polishes are my favourite! They apply so easily but yes, definitely an expensive brand to get addicted to! 🙂

      Hi Linda,

Chanel makes some killer nail polishes. Have you seen Taboo?

I always have a problem of my nails turning yellow and breakage at the tips. I used OPI and Zoya. I barely wear nail polishes because of that. Also, with my line of work, I wear gloves and handwash 90% of the time. I should give Chanel a try. I heard great reviews on Taboo. I’ll start on that and see how it goes.

The item in my collection that I’m most sentimental about is Benefit’s Dandelion powder. It’s such a beautiful, naturally pretty color (especially in the midwinter, when my tan has completely faded and I’m a pretty-darn-white-girl) and I just love it! It got me into blush, and really more into makeup in general, to a greater extent than any other product I own. I’m sure I could find a similar color in a different brand that would have a longer wear time, but I can’t bring myself to give up that Dandelion! 🙂

I am LOVING this black saitn… I’ve been resisting the call of Chanel’s nail polishes, but this one just might break me…

Oh gosh I LOVE Dandelion! I just tried it and I totally understand the hype now. So, so pretty. 🙂

I’ve also been using Benefit’s Hoola and Dallas and they are both awesome too, I’m beginning to think that maybe Benefit makes the best blushes!

Their blushes are definitely super pretty! They all look so natural, but with *just* the right amount of OOMPH. I have Hoola, CORALista, and Bella Bamba, as well, and love them all. My only problem is the wear time – I feel that when I use them in the morning before work, the color has mostly faded by lunchtime. I guess it wouldn’t kill me to reapply, lol… 🙂

Karen, I’ve just checked out Taboo! The only way I can describe it is bewitching! I must have this for my collection, thanks for mentioning it 😀

The item that started my makeup collection is Chanel Mademoiselle Rouge Coco! I bought Peridot soon afterwards, and my collection has grown enormously since then! I do think Chanel tends to set the trend, though a lot of the times other brands take over and take it to a different level.

I love Chanel Polish… Right now I’m obsessed by Provocation… OMG or is it Provocateur… whatever… that one! It’s red/purple and perfect all over! Can’t wait for fall!

I only own ONE Chanel polish. I’ve just never wanted to go down that road. But I couldn’t resist Night Sky. It’s so old now but I still pull it out to gaze at it lovingly! Black Satin looks like it could be my new Night Sky though…

What a pretty polish. I’ve never worn black before but the silver makes the finish particularly interesting. 🙂

Black polish can look cheap or weird very easily. I think this is actually looking sophisticated enough to wear in a more conservative work environment.

If you can find Chanel Noir Ceramic try this one! It has a little bit of sparkle, it was limited a couple of years ago but maybe it can be found at airports. This was one of my first Chanel polishes and I still regret not buying it twice.
