Quick Makeup Tip: An Improv Cleanser for Your Brushes

May 10th, 2022 by Karen 9 Comments

In a pinch, your face wash doubles as a brush cleanser!

I’ve been wearing makeup and cleaning brushes for a bazillion years and just figured this out, like, yesterday, so of course I had to tell ya. I wanted to wash my brushes and didn’t feel like digging through the mountain of boxes in my bedroom, so I tried this with a Korres face wash I had on hand, and it worked like a charm.

I do think this tip does have a small caveat, though. It should probably be a face wash that removes makeup, sunscreen and can cut through oil. I think something foamy is helpful, too, to remove any long-wearing bits and bobs of makeup from your brush bristles. I can’t imagine it working as well with something gentle, creamy and non-foaming, like Cetaphil cleanser, however if you try it and it works, you’ll have to let me know.

Building those muscles, day one

I watched this video about building your happiness muscles a while back, and so I’m trying a new exercise for the next two weeks.

Every day, I make a small note of two things I’m grateful for. No pressure at all to make it too deep, either. It can be as simple as being grateful for the sliced lemons in your water.

Anywho, today I’m grateful for YouTube workouts. It’s kind of mind blowing to push a few buttons and have access to any type of workout at any given time anywhere in the world. Back in the day I’d have to use DVDs, and my workouts would get so repetitive and boring. Not any more!

I’m also grateful for all the old trees in my neighborhood. They’re so beautiful.

If you feel like joining in, please feel free to jot down one or two things in the comments. It can be something as simple as your favorite socks. If it adds richness to your life in some small way, write it down.

Karen

P.S. Have a great day!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 728

May 9th, 2022 by Karen 30 Comments

charlotte tilbury makeup happy saturday
Let’s makeup

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

    1. Crocs or Birkenstocks?

I find neither option terribly thrilling, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the Birkenstocks. At least my toes will be free.

    2. Something you need to fix?

Honestly, I gotta get my teeth sorted out. I have several fillings that need to be replaced, and my dentist recommended that I get surgery for recessed gums… I’ve been putting everything off, and I just need to suck it up and get it done.

    3. Are you going on any trips this summer?

Yes! We’re going on a couple camping trips on the Russian River in Sonoma, and a trip to Hawaii in July.

    4. What was your last haircut like?

What even is a haircut? LOL! My last one was in September, I think. Unfortunately I said “yes” to the stylist when she offered to do a razor cut, and my waves have been wonky ever since. When will I ever learn? Le sigh!

    5. Last thing you waxed?

My upper lip hair, yesterday. Thank goodness for Bliss blue wax!

    6. Would you rather buy expensive skin care or expensive hair care?

Oh girl, expensive skin care, 100%!

    7. First song that comes to mind?

“Could You Be Loved,” by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

    8. How good are you about taking care of yourself?

I’ve been crap at it for the last year and a half but determined to do better. I’m starting with small steps. Guess what I did last weekend? I gave my fingers and toes a proper mani and pedi, I went to Ulta and restocked things I desperately needed, and I made an appointment to get my haircut (FINALLY).

    9. Something you’re grateful for today (don’t overthink it)?

Fancy body lotion. I don’t know why, but it makes me feel so good.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 709

May 8th, 2022 by Karen 5 Comments

As you know, my youngest daughter is a cat. She’s also a low-key scientific genius, but that’s another story for another day.

My previous employer (Tabs), never referred to me as “Mom.” It was mostly “hey, lady,” or “woman,” but I felt very maternal toward him. Anything he needed, I tried to provide.

I mean, I tried to give him professional and personal advice, and sometimes — well, most of the time — I felt like it fell on deaf ears, although once he said something to me that I would often say to him when I felt like he was about to have a meltdown. It came out as a meow and a paw on my arm, which translated as “Maybe you should pause a moment and take a few deep breaths.”

There were a few Mother’s Day cards from him peppered throughout the years, but I think that was mostly El Hub’s doing. Still, I was always happy to receive them.

Rosie, before she came to live with us, was a mom too. She had a litter a few months before we adopted her, and during her first few weeks with us, I remember watching a show about kittens on TV, and when Rosie heard the kittens crying, she walked all over the living room trying to find the babies. She went behind the TV, looked under the shelves in the TV stand, all over. She was genuinely perplexed about the kitten situation. Sometimes I wonder if she ever thinks about her kittens and hopes they’re doing well.

She’s the sweetest, so I’m sure she does.

Happy Mother’s Day to you.

Karen

Saturday Surfing, May 7, 2022!

May 7th, 2022 by Karen 6 Comments

Hi, friend. I’m following Rosie-Pose’s lead today and taking a nap any chance I get. Her new favorite spot is this sunny patch right outside my office. She often shows up during work meetings to make her presence known!

It’s been a long week, and I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am that it’s Saturday. Connor, poor thing, came down with a cold this week, so she was home with me on Thursday and Friday. She’s feeling better today, thank goodness. Me, on the other hand… I’m feeling tapped. I had a lot of unexpected things happen at work this week. Deadlines and caring for a sick child means I haven’t had much rest, so I’m taking the time to recharge this weekend.

This week’s reading

  • Meet the female perfumers behind the industry’s most alluring scents.
  • This one’s for the ladies who love rose scents just as much as I do.
  • CK One, Clinique Happy, J. Lo Glow: ’90s and ’00s perfumes are trending again.
  • People are getting manicures based on their aura readings.
  • Who wants to roll out to Walnut Creek? There’s a Target there that’s testing manicures done by machines.
  • 7 places to get your K-beauty skin care fix.
  • A startup in San Diego creates the first portable “cold cap” to save chemotherapy patients’ hair.
  • See nearly every lipstick worn to the 2022 Met Gala.

I’m going to try one of these.

LOVED this!

You can dance (for inspiration).

This made me so happy.

Catchy!

How do you feel about savory breakfast?

Interesting.

Enjoy the rest of your day. What are your plans?

May 6th, 2022 by Karen 9 Comments

Don’t overthink it. Just write down anything and everything that makes your life better in some small way. See ya in the comments!

Small things I’m grateful for

  • Massive artichokes at Trader Joe’s
  • The memories feature on my phone (Connor’s baby pics!)
  • Socks without holes
  • Extra strong hair ties for thick, heavy manes
  • The night guard I use every night that prevents me from grinding my teeth into oblivion
  • Stretching
  • Cooking videos
  • Twist-up pencils you don’t have to sharpen
  • Sunscreen that doesn’t sting your eyes

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Thank goodness it’s Friday!

Quick Makeup Tip: Control That Cream Shadow

May 5th, 2022 by Karen 4 Comments

So serious, LOL!

Instead of swiping cream shadow directly on your lids with the applicator, use a dome-shaped eyeshadow brush. The brush will lay down a sheer layer of product, and it will allow you to place it exactly where you want, so you have more control!

First, I load my eyeshadow brush by running it directly along the applicator, then I remove any excess on the back of my hand before applying the shadow on my lids and lower lash lines.

Today I did this with Ilia Liquid Eye Tint in Fresco!

Smile! It’s going to be a great day.

Makeup worn in this look

This look took me about 15 minutes, and I did it all right before a 9 a.m. meeting. The bulk of my time was spent on my brows and lashes because they’ve both been stressing me out!

  1. Estee Lauder Double Wear Instant Fix Concealer in Medium Deep Warm – Under my eyes, on my cheeks and around my mouth.
  2. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden – To set the concealer.
  3. MAC Omega and Concrete Eyeshadows – I mixed both and applied to my brows.
  4. Laura Mercier Eyeliner in Stormy Grey – Waterlines and lashlines, smudged.
  5. Ilia Fresco Eye Tint – Applied with a Laura Mercier domed shadow brush.
  6. Ilia Fullest Volumizing Mascara – Seriously, not the greatest, but I keep using it. Shrugs.
  7. Lilah B Lip Oil in B. Elegant – A lovely lip oil if you like nude lips.
  8. Laura Mercier Blush in Chai – Applied with a duo fiber brush.

Quick Makeup Tip: The Best Brush for Effortless Powder Blush or Bronzer

May 4th, 2022 by Karen 7 Comments

Feeling rushed? This blush and bronzer brush is your new BFF.

You can’t go wrong with a duo fibre synthetic brush when applying powder blush or bronzer. This type of brush lays down a sheer layer of product, so matter how rushed you’re feeling, you’ll always apply just enough color — but not too much! When I have a very narrow window of time to apply makeup, it’s the brush I reach for when I do my cheeks.

I used it today for a 10-minute makeup look that I did before a video work call. I layered Laura Mercier Ginger Blush and MAC Give Me Sun MSF Powder for a sheer, warm flush on my cheeks.

You might hear this blush referred to sometimes as “skunk brush.” Lots of brands make them; I have one by MAC (the 188) which I’ve used and loved for ages. It’s in the pic above! What I like about it is that width of the brush head. It’s on the smaller side, so it’s easier to control exactly where the color goes.

Makeup worn in this look

Here’s everything I’m wearing in the 10-minute look above, in the order in which I applied the products.

  1. MAC Omega Eyeshadow – In my brows.
  2. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Wheat – Dotted all over and blended with fingers.
  3. Ilia Dusk Gel Liner – Waterlines and lash roots.
  4. Hourglass Veil Retouching Fluid in Sand – Under my eyes and round my mouth.
  5. MAC Medium Mineralize Skinfinish in Medium Golden – I applied the sheerest layer to my under eyes, cheek, between my brows and around my mouth
  6. Ilia Cool Nude Eyeshadow Palette – Just the taupe shade, Infinity, applied with a finger and blended out with a tapered brush.
  7. Ilia Fullest Volumizing Mascara – Upper lashes, but to be honest I’ll be ditching this soon. It’s thick and hard to control.
  8. Lilah B Lip Oil in Be Remarkable – Lips, applied with the wand and then blended in with a finger.
  9. Laura Mercier Ginger Blush – Did this first for a light flush of color.
  10. MAC Give Me Sun Mineralize Skinifinish – Layer this on for instant warmth. Also works fab as a crease color!

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

May 3rd, 2022 by Karen 12 Comments

1. Artichokes

My local TJ’s had huge artichokes last week. No joke, they were the size of a small child’s head! I intended to share the two I bought with the fam but ended up eating both in the span of 24 hours.

I steamed them, and then I gobbled them down with a sauce made from light mayo mixed with a few drops of Trader Joe’s Balsamic Glaze. Delightful!

2. Tokyo Vice on HBO Max

I stumbled onto this show and enjoyed it enough to marathon it last week. It’s set in Tokyo in the late ’90s. An American working as a crime reporter gets caught up in the gang underworld. Trouble ensues!

3. This sushi recipe video

OK, who else out there could happily eat all the sushi? Here’s how to make it at home. No joke, I’ve watched this video SO MANY TIMES.

4. Laura Mercier Ginger blush

I had two minutes to put makeup on before a meeting this morning. LM’s Ginger blush to the rescue.

Hello from my desk…

5. Nespresso Colombia Coffee

If you have a Vertuo, you have to try this flavor ASAP. It’s so good! Smooth, buttery and just yum all around.

Drools

What have you been loving lately?
