Two Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora!

A Makeup and Beauty Blog Giveaway!

They’re what I like to call “brain cheese.”

Ya know, brainless B-movies that border on unwatchable, but you end up watching them anyway because you’re not in the mood to think.

I had some brain cheese the other night in the form of SyFy’s Rise: Blood Walker (starring Lucy Liu!). It’s the usual “You turned me into a [INSERT PRETERNATURAL CREATURE HERE], and now I want my revenge!” flick.

Like a Lifetime movie…except with vampires.

Anywho, during one of the commercial breaks, I saw a promo for the new season of Face Off, SyFy’s special effects makeup reality show.

ChronicleI didn’t watch the show last season, but I heard it was good. If you saw it, what did you think? Is it worth using my telekinesis, like in Chronicle, which I saw last night (OMG!), to program the DVR with my mind??

Oh, yes, CHRONICLE! Brain cheese need not apply, not unless we’re talking about Caciocavallo Podolico, which’ll set you back about $650/pound. I thought it was smart, thought provoking, thrilling, different and really well filmed (LOVE the flying scenes). One of my favorite sci-fi movies in years.

It’s a superhero/villain origin story of sorts about three high school friends who, through mysterious means, acquire the ability to manipulate objects in their environment with their minds. Telekinesis.

Okay, now, maybe from that description…it doesn’t sound very smart or different, but that’s just the dressing. What happens before and after that is the yummy salad.

I was worried about the cinematography before going in because I’d read that it was filmed in a style called “found footage,” like The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, where the characters are supposedly filming themselves with home video cameras, but while the camerawork in those two movies seemed a little gimmicky and clumsy to me, I thought it blended beautifully into the story in Chronicle.

Speaking of beauty, don’t we usually have a giveaway on Saturdays? Of course we do. 🙂 So let’s get on with it then.

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • There are two ways to enter, and you can do both of them for two chances to win. First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all, like, who’s your favorite character from a sci-fi book, TV or movie? Have you ever auditioned for a play or film? If you had a superpower, would you tell anyone? Do you wear makeup when you go to the movies? Capes on costumes: cute or tacky? Will you be my love valentine? — you get the idea.
  • Second, you can enter by following me on twitter Twitter @karenmbb and retweeting (RT) the following message:
    • Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win a $50 eGift Card from Sephora! http://bit.ly/A9ItMq

  • The deadline to enter is Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 11:59PM (PT).
  • Entrants must enter using a valid email address and/or Twitter account to win.
  • A maximum of two (2) entries per person — one within the comments at the bottom of this post, and a second entry via Twitter addressed to me @karenmbb.
  • Contest is open to individuals of any country who have reached the age of majority according to their local laws (18 in the United States with these exceptions: Alabama and Nebraska, 19; Mississippi, 21).
  • Sephora eGift Certificates can only be redeemed online and are not valid in stores or available for purchase or redemption in Canada. International winners may opt to substitute the Sephora eGift card prize for $50 sent directly to their email address by PayPal instead.
  • Tabs and I (heretofore referred to as “T-Money and K-Dawg”) will select one (1) winner at random from the entries either left in the comments at the bottom of this blog post or addressed to @karenmbb on Twitter.
  • The winner will be announced here within 48 hours of the deadline.
  • Void where prohibited by law.

Pixi Turned Target Into a Magic Kingdom With the New Disney Pixi PixiGlow Collection

February 3rd, 2012 by Karen 20 Comments

pixi pixiglow (6)

Pixiglow by Pixi Fellow pixies, nixies, fairies and sprites, someone is tinkering with makeup at Target. 🙂

Dreamy drugstore line Pixi collaborated with Tinker Bell over at Disney HQ to create the new PixiGlow six-piece release of makeup for eyes, lips, cheeks, faces and nails.

Exclusive to Target, the limited edition launch doesn’t arrive in stores until next month, but it is available now online.

Unlike many of Disney’s makeup collaborations, the packaging for PixiGlow is fairy-ly subtle, but if you look closely, you’ll notice Ms. Bell protecting each piece and box.

“In collaboration with Disney, we created a unique Tinker Bell collection that captures the fresh-faced, glowing, and timeless beauty of both a Disney icon and the Pixi brand by reinforcing that makeup simply enhances and perfects your natural beauty.”

–Petra Strand, creator of the Pixi makeup line

Even if you prefer more daring Disney packaging, I think there’s some pretty good stuff here to like…

A Tribute to The Hunger Games! The China Glaze Capitol Colours Collection

February 3rd, 2012 by Karen 42 Comments

So maybe limited edition nail polish collections and sci-fi teen fiction trilogies make unlikely bedfellows, but just like Greasy Sae’s mice meat, pig entrails and tree bark stew, something about this one just works.

China Glaze pays tribute to the tributes of The Hunger Games with the new Capitol Colours Collection, which catches fire on shelves at Sally Beauty and Ulta stores, and beauty salons early next month.

Playing with these polishes was almost like reading the books. I couldn’t put ’em down! — and as I let the 12 polishes ($7 each) parade across my fingertips this afternoon, I wondered which ones Cinna would choose for Katniss… 🙂

Oil Doesn’t Stand a Chance Against Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation with SPF 15

February 3rd, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

tarte amazonian clay full coverage foundation (2)

The Amazon is a vast tropical river basin filled with astonishing animals and prehistoric plants. Freaky!

But apparently the clay there only comes in eight different shades… 🙂

Tarte recently released a new foundation to go with their new Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Glosses, Amazonian Clay Blushes, Maracuja Blush & Glows and Bright Side eye brightener, and like some of their other products, it contains Amazonian clay.

tarte amazonian clay full coverage foundation (3)

Available now at Sephora stores and sephora.com, new Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage foundation with SPF 15 ($38) comes in a modest eight shades.

The foundation has been one of the things I’ve been really looking forward to trying from Tarte’s spring line, not just because it gets several five-star reviews on the Sephora website, but also because I already heart Tarte’s Smooth Operator Natural Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 and their Pressed Powder.

Tarte says that adaptability makes Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage special. Designed for all skin types, it’s supposed to hydrate dry patches on the skin while simultaneously absorbing excess shine and oil.

This, I figured, had the makings of a major win!

My main concern? — would I be able to find a matching shade?

Well, not exactly… Tan, the shade that comes closest to my NC 42 skin, isn’t a perfect match. It’s a tad too light and peachy, and consequently looks a little ashy on me, but I still wanted to test the product’s other claims, so I wore it around the house.

Ingredients in Tan: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Octyldodecyl Neopentanoate Butylene Glycol, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Mica, Dimethicone, Silica, Phenoxyethanol, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Aluminum Hydroxide, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Phytantriol, Hexyl Laurate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Sodium Chloride, Hexylene Glycol, Lysine, Tocopherol, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Nylon-12 Fluorescent Brightener 230 Salt, Polyvinylalcohol Crosspolymer, Kaolin, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Zinc Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Potassium Sorbate, Iron Oxides.
