Checking In: Lemons, MOAR Chanel and a Standout Red Lipstick by MAC

December 17th, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

Never in my life have I been this excited about citrus, ever! My Meyer lemon tree is poppin’ off!

She’s got so much ripe fruit on her right now. Later on today I’m going to pick some lemons so I can make lemon pasta tonight.

Maybe lemon bars are in the future, too, although truth be told I wouldn’t mind finding a new lemon desert to love. If you have a lemon dessert recipe that will change my life, please let me know.

OK, so do you see the color of this blue pot from my lemon tree? It totally reminds me of that blue Chanel nail polish I’ve been drooling over. I think that’s a sign telling me I need it in my life.

Yesterday, I put it in my cart and have been dancing around the check out button furiously, so to speak.

I also figured that while I was at it, I might as well put some other things in my cart!

Next thing you know, there’s a jar of New Moon in there (it’s on backorder, boo) and a tube of Dimensions de Chanel Mascara. I was also going to throw in couple Stylo Yeux eyeliners (you know, the twist ups), but I’ve been really happy with the dark brown Ilia liner I’ve been using lately, and I’m toying with the idea of actually finishing it. GASP, I KNOW!

Chanel New Moon

I was just about to add a stick of the $40 Boy de Chanel brow pencil (from the line marketed to men) that I love when I noticed there is also a “ladies” version available. After some quick sleuthing I realized, 1) they both have a similar ingredient list, 2) both pencils hold the same amount of product and 3) the women’s version costs less — it’s $33! So, yeah. I love ya, Boy de Chanel, but if this haul happens, I’m gonna go with the slightly more affordable version.

If (when?) I actually pull the trigger — and I might because my will power is really starting to break down — then I should add a lipstick or two into the mix, right? Maybe a new red? Chanel does some incredible reds.

Oh, speaking of red lipstick, I put a warm red on my baby for the first time ever! I used MAC Quite the Standout on Coywolf for her dance recital last weekend.

I did this lip freehand without any lip pencil or a lip brush, and I have to say, I think I did OK! The girls in her group danced to “Candy Cane Lane” by Sia, which is why they were all dressed up like sweet little candy canes.

Karen

P.S. TGIF! What’s going on for the weekend? Are you doing any last-minute shopping? I SURE AM!

Checking In: Swooning Over Chanel Nail Polish, Briogeo Hair Oil and Needing a Nap…

December 16th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

briogeo oil laneige sleeping mask

Not that I need another Chanel nail polish because, side note, I’m trying to keep my beauty collection streamlined on all fronts, buuuuuut I saw this navy blue stunner on Chanel’s beauty community Instagram feed and swooned! It was a fainting couch moment, trust.

It reminds me a little of the shade Orage from certain angles but brighter and slightly less moody.

While we’re on the topic of trying to keep things streamlined, this morning I was cleaning up the little vanity area in my bathroom and debated whether or not I was going to keep this bottle of Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair Strengthening Treatment Oil. I got it a while back, and it’s a little tricky to use.

ilia liptick lip oil briogeo hair oil
A little Sephora pit stop

I bought it partly because I like the flowers and partly because I like the idea of having a non-silicone hair oil, but eh, it’s just OK. I have to be very careful with the amount I use, because no joke, one drop too many, and my hair ends up super greasy and flat. Not cute!

I’ve found a way to make it work by mixing a couple drops into a leave-in conditioner (my go-to is Odele’s at the moment), but the difference in my hair really isn’t significant, so I probably won’t be buying it again. I’m still on the hunt for a hair oil without silicone, so if you have one to recommend, let me know.

Another thing I discovered while I was cleaning out my vanity — this tiny little jar of LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask. I got it from Sephora last June as a free birthday gift, and I’ve had it for months but haven’t touched it, so today, after my shower, I used it to moisturize my body. LOL! I figure it’s better than just letting it sit there.

Well, hello there Rosie-Pose!

And you know what, my skin feels pretty soft. I might just put it on my face. LOL!

I hope everything on your end is well. Things are good here, just a little busier than usual. I had a slew of deadlines at work this week, and that coupled with all the holiday stuff Connor has going on (a recital last weekend and a Christmas performance last night), I’ve been going hard from one task to the next.

Are you feeling the holiday spirit yet? For Christmas this year, I’m thinking of asking Santa to give me a five hour block to myself so I can take a nap! Now that would be a Christmas miracle.

What Are the Driest Areas of Your Skin?

December 15th, 2021 by Karen 7 Comments

moisturizer
Moisturize meh!

Driest parts of my skin? Oy! I don’t even know where to start.

On my face, usually my cheeks, and this is consistent all year ’round, even summer. And then around the middle of winter I start getting dry patches around my mouth and my nostrils, and sometimes they’re so dry that they turn red and flaky. Weirdly, however, this wasn’t always the case. Up until my early 30s, I had straight-up oily skin and dryness was never an issue. Sometimes I’d even skip moisturizer, GASP! Now, though, that is no longer an option. When I don’t use lotion on my face, my skin feels really tight. Sometimes it hurts.

Oh, the woes of a dry-cheeked girl…

On my body, the dryness is pretty much spread all over the place. It’s equal opportunity dryness! — although there are places, like my shins, my feet and especially my hands, that do get noticeably drier in the winter.

I literally never leave the house without a tube of hand cream in my purse.

And I’ve definitely noticed that the dryness depends on the climate and the humidity. When I leave the Bay Area, like when I go to Redding to see my in-laws up north, where it’s inland and there’s much lower humidity, the dryness kicks up several notches. Same thing when I go to Las Vegas or Arizona or other parts of the Southwest.

I think if I lived in those areas I’d have to start bathing in heavy-duty cream moisturizer, LOL!

NARS Isolde Eye Duo in Action

December 14th, 2021 by Karen 2 Comments

nars isolde k1

Note to self: wear NARS Isolde more often. This post from 2015 kind of blows my mind, because I can’t believe I actually had 25 minutes to put on makeup! I still love Isolde now as much as I did then.

I wasn’t playing the other day when I said I’ve been all about NARS Isolde lately. Both it and NARS Cordura (LOVE YOU, C!!!) have been two of my full-time eye makeup BFFs for weeks, and even though I’ve mostly gotten over this cold of mine and want to wear more makeup again, I still don’t have the patience to sit still for 45 minutes and blend six different teals till my fingers fall off, ya know?

nars isolde k

This week I’ve been using the timer on my iPhone in the morning to rein myself in. I set it for 25 minutes, and whatever I’m able to do in that time, that’s what I end up wearing for the day.

Before I even start, though, I keep all the basics, like foundation, mascara and concealer, etc., in a little box next to my desk so I don’t waste any time hunting stuff down. Then I also put whatever eye and lip products I plan to wear in the same box.

I like to spend the lion’s share of the 25 minutes on my eye makeup, so I’ll cut back on some things and spend less time on my skin, which is why more of my freckles are peeking through in these pics than usual.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 707

December 13th, 2021 by Karen 21 Comments

have a joyful day poll holiday
Feeling the spirit!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

    1. Where did you put your makeup on today?

In my office, at my desk. It was early when I put it on and that room has the best lighting in the house. (Side note: I saw a woman putting on makeup in her car the other day, which is why I thought of this question.)

    2. What does your winter coat look like?

On really cold days (well, cold for California), I wear a khaki puffer coat, and on days when it’s raining, I wear a yellow rain coat.

    3. Have you ever gone through a roller blading phase?

LOL, yeah, in college. During my last two years I roller bladed everywhere. Honestly, it’s a miracle I didn’t break anything, and I still can’t believe I did all that blading while carrying a heavy backpack.

    4. How meticulously do you plan your holiday gift giving? Do you stick closely to your list or do you shop on the fly?

I fall somewhere in the middle. I usually start with a list and grab as much as I can, but I also like to pick up fun extras and stocking stuffers if I see things that the person might like while I’m out and about.

    5. A traditional dish/food you usually have during the holidays?

Leche flan, which is like the Filipino version of creme brulee.

    6. Describe your hair today in three words.

    A touch unruly.

    7. Solid leggings or printed leggings?

I’ll go with the solid leggings, in a dark color — navy or black.

    8. Something trendy you used to do when you were a kid?

When I was in middle school all the girls wore two pairs of slouchy socks. To do it right, they had to be different colors — black and pink, or black and white, for example. Oh, and the chunkier the slouchy socks were, the better.

    9. Red eyeshadow or green eyeshadow?

    Green, please. Emerald or khaki!

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 688

December 12th, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

She wanted to do something special. Rosie — she wanted to do something special for the employees of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC. Ever since she took over the reins from Tabs, Rosie’s wanted to show the staff how much she appreciates them. These are tough times, and she’s just so proud of everyone.

So, this year she decided to pull out all the stops with a Christmas party for the ages! Tabs himself would have been impressed.

First, the evening began with a holographic speech by Tabs himself! He previously recorded a number of Ted Talks, including one on maintaining a positive cattitude in the face of adversity, so that’s the one we showed.

It was great! The technology was pretty incredible. It was just like Tabs himself was addressing the team.

After that, everyone headed over to the company auditorium for the official Christmas bonus presentation. This year, Rosie gave everyone a $9,000 bonus! Plus, every single cat and human got a Christmas ham, turkey, an extra large can of gravy, and their choice of a Christmas sweater or an air fryer.

The festivities wrapped up on the main lawn with a bounce house!

Yup, it was pretty incredible. I’m very proud to be an employee of this company. 🙂

Saturday Surfing, Dec. 11, 2021!

December 11th, 2021 by Karen 4 Comments

lilah b lovingly lip tinted lip oil
Lip Oils by lilah b.

Let’s put on some lip oil! 😁

Question for you — have you ever seen a lip oil in a rollerball? Every single one I’ve tried has a wand inside a tube, and there’s usually an oversized doe foot, like the one from the original O.G. lip oils by Clarins.

You’d think a lip oil with a rollerball would be convenient because it has one less element? Right? But, I don’t know, I worry about the oil getting goopy and the rollerball just getting messy… If you’ve ever seen one in the history of ever, let me know.

These lip oils here are from a local Marin County brand called lilah b. (all lowercase).

The tubes look much darker than they do in these pics, FYI. For the pics below, I brightened the lighting to give you a better idea of what the colors look like on lips, but in real life the tubes look super dark, almost unwearable.

Anywho, in other news…I had to buy some jeans because I looked down one day, and all of mine either had snags in them from Rosie’s claws, or stains, and even though I loathe clothes shopping, I made myself go to Banana Republic Factory because there’s one nearby in town, and I’d be able to try stuff on and return it there if I had to.

Little backstory, but I’ve been putting off buying jeans for a really long time. I’ve tried to find some online, but as convenient as online shopping is, it usually doesn’t work out for me when it comes to clothing because, when I actually get the clothes, there’s always one thing — at least one thing — wrong with them.

Invariably, once they get to my house, I think to myself, oh, I can deal with this one wrong thing, so I end up keeping the items, but then I’m plagued by that one wrong thing, and I never end up wearing what I actually buy. 🙄

lilah b lovingly lip tinted lip oil
From the left: B. Remarkable, B. Elegant, B. Sincere

So, I’m making myself actually, physically go into stores to try stuff on, even though it’s really the last thing I want to do.

All this is to say that I found some pants with potential at Banana Republic Factory. They’re called the high-rise slim jean, and they were 60% off in store, but apparently 75% off online. And I don’t hate them. Yet.

I actually have a pair on right now… They still have the tags and stickers on, too. I’m just gonna wear them around the house for the next few hours to see if I can tolerate them.

So far, high rise, run big, skinny without being skin-tight like leggings, so they’re a little looser around the thighs and calves. Overall, I give ’em a thumb…sideways. I don’t know if I like them or not.

Other than that, I’ve got dance mom duties today because Connor has her first onstage performance coming up in, goodness gracious, two years? I’m going to bring her to rehearsals today, and then her performance is tomorrow.

It’s a sunny day here this weekend, but I hear there’s some rain coming. What’s the weather like out your way?

  • Ya know, I’m not surprised to see Biologique Recherche P50 toner on this list of the ten most-recommended products. I need to buy myself another bottle ASAP!
  • L’Oreal just bought Youth to The People.
  • To quote Wu-Tang, “Protect ya neck.”
  • Black women are making waves in the hair care industry.
  • What cats can teach us about living in the present, being content and learning from our experiences.

I’m about to play this for Rosie Pose.

Feeling this aesthetic right meow.

I will forever think of him as the big brother in Kim’s Convenience!

Fun

Oh, the early aughts…

Yum

Talk to me, doc.

This looks cool.

I was OBSESSED with Pat Benetar when I was a kid.

On repeat

Who’s gonna make this for me?

I want to go shopping with you, Isimeme.

1. Lip Oils

I’m trying not to fall back into makeup hoarding habits, but I sure do love lip oils, especially the tinted ones. I could easily fill up a whole makeup bag with them!

Remember when the Clarins version first hit the scene? It’s the OG.

2. Burrata

I had a dish last weekend with burrata, foccacia and arugula, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Why is burrata so darn good? It really should come with a warning.

3. Chypre fragrances
