What’s the Most Time-Consuming Part of Your Beauty Routine?

August 10th, 2021 by Karen 14 Comments

oribe summer hair buns 8
Well, hello there!

Once upon a time, it was makeup! 🤪 But these days, my hair takes up the biggest chunk of time in my beauty/getting-ready routine.

There are just A LOT of steps involved. It drives me nuts! The most involved part is the washing and conditioning, because I work out pretty much every day now, so my scalp gets super sweaty and oily and requires…attention. Plus, on top of that, I have pretty bad seasonal allergies, so when I go outside, my hair absorbs pollen, dust, ash from local wildfires, or whatever other allergens are floating around outside on any given day. I absolutely have to wash my hair before I go to bed; otherwise, I hit the hay with hella allergens all up in my business, which consequently get all over my pillow and the bedding, and bothers me all night long.

Funny thing is…I don’t spend nearly as much time styling my hair as I spend cleaning it. It only takes me about five minutes to do a semi-decent hairstyle with a large-barrel curling iron, or to do a messy braid or bun. In fact, it takes way less time to get my hair ready to go “out into the world” than it did when I was in my 20s and 30s because I’ve long since embraced my natural waves and no longer go to battle with them (go figure).

The next most time-consuming part of my routine is the skin care, and basically it’s keeping track of all the layers, then waiting for them to dry. Man! Ever since I decided to wage the good fight against hyperpigmentation, time it takes me to do my skin care routine has increased exponentially. Mind you, I’m OK with that because it does seem to be helping…

Oh, and putting on sunscreen multiple times a day takes up a lot of time, too.

The least most time-consuming (least most?) part of my routine is any actual makeup, when I wear it, followed by panting my nails.

How about you? What’s the most time-consuming part of your beauty routine?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy Tuesday! 😺

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 690

August 9th, 2021 by Karen 25 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Plum or lychee?

    Lychee, preferably cold and juicy.

    2. How are your hot roller skills?

They are…not great! I’ve tried using them before, multiple times, but I can never get the rollers to sit quite right. There’s something super awards about it for me. Also, because I have a great deal of hair, there usually aren’t enough rollers in those sets. I’d rather just use a curling iron instead.

    3. Something you loved as a child?

The Care Bears. I was crazy about ’em, even though I never owned one of the plushies.

I really, really wanted one, though.

    4. Biking or roller blading?

Biking, and if it’s outdoors, we’re going at a slooooow and lazy pace because — hey, man, when I’m outside, I don’t want to be working too hard on bike, ya know? Now, if, instead, we’re indoors on a stationary bike, then BRING IT!

    5. What’s your go-to serum?

SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is my jam right now.

    6. A skin care item (or items) you used in ’90s?

Oh, so many! Clinique 3-step with the bar soap in the green plastic tray, Noxzema Face Wash and Noxzema Pads, St. Ives Apricot Scrub, Nivea Lotion takes me way baaaaaack. Oh, and all the toners! Ten-O-Six lotion, Sea Breeze, Witch Hazel… If a toner were able to practically melt your face off in the ’90s, it’s safe to assume I used it.

    7. Do you sweat a lot?

Yeah, when I’m working out, I sweat like a mofo’! During the course of my everyday life, I would say that I’m moderately sweaty, but more so when it’s hot out.

    8. Things that help you put your best foot forward?

Getting a good night’s sleep, meditating first thing in the morning, drinking lots of water… Oh, and wearing an outfit that makes me feel good.

    9. Jump rope or dancing?

    Dancing! 💃🏽

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Plum or lychee?

    6. A skin care item (or items) you used in ’90s?
    7. Do you sweat a lot?
    8. Things that help you put your best foot forward?
    9. Jump rope or dancing?

P.P.S. Hello, my sweet friend! I’m so grateful to see you here today, and I hope the week ahead is filled with so much joy. You are important and so, so loved. Have a good one, OK? 🤗

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 672

August 8th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

As you know, today was International Cat Day. 😺 If Tabs were around, I’m sure he would have set up a Zoom call with all of his international cat friends, and he wouldn’t have even needed my help. He was pretty proficient when it came to using technology. In fact, he used the assumption that people and other cats had about his good looks to his advantage… Well, you know, they would see him and assume he was just another pretty face with no substance, and while he wasn’t exactly a mathematical genius, a la Rosie, he was still smart and managed to, not only run an international business empire, but he also accrued multiple collegiate degrees along the way, just for fun.

Did you know he had a PhD in paleobiology? Yeah, me neither! I found out one day while I was opening the mail and a package had arrived from Harvard. It was a degree! In a frame!

Rosie

Speaking of Ivy League schools, Rosie’s alma mater is MIT (the Meow-ssachusetts Institute of Technology). They had their yearly alumni lunch today, and she wanted to get a little dressed up, which is why she looks fancier than usual in these pics.

I was all set to drive her to SF for the luncheon (she was the keynote speaker), but it was touch and go for a moment because Harris the neighborhood cat ruffian stopped by. Yeah, I guess he was in the mood to rumble in the jungle.

Thankfully, Rosie hissed and growled and scared him away, so we were able to leave and make it to the luncheon on time. 😂

Saturday Surfing, Aug. 7, 2021!

August 7th, 2021 by Karen 12 Comments

Hello there and good morning to ya, beautiful girl! I hope thou feelest calm and centered on this lovely Saturday. If you’ve got grand designs on wearing a little makeup this weekend (perhaps a lipstick or some gloss?), hurray! Good makeup tidings to you! I’ll be trying a few new lipsticks from Urban Decay this weekend, so I’ve got high hopes for those. I’ll let you know how it goes. UD recently redid their formula and packaging… What do you think of the square tubes?

This week’s reading

  • “Perfume can be that helpful friend who handles the chitchat when an introvert finds herself shy in a crowded room.”
  • Rihanna’s new perfume has notes of magnolia, musk, tangerine and blueberry, with hints of Bulgarian rose absolute, geranium and patchouli.
  • Have you ever found yourself wondering what, exactly, is a vampire facial?
  • Here’s exactly when to apply a serum when you’re doing your skincare routine.
  • Get to know the mother-daughter duo behind Okiki Skin Care.
  • Just in case you were thinking about replacing the silk pillowcase your cat destroyed with her overenthusiastic biscuit making in the middle of the night…
  • A few tips to help your nail polish dry faster…
  • Cats love agility training. Who knew?
  • FYI, International Cat Day is August 8th. (That’s tomorrow! 😺)

Drop that knowledge, docs!

Totes trying this.

How to choose the right cleanser for your skin

So, I know this is about the makeup but, WOW, her hair!

If you love shoes like I do…

A super catchy tune, and the colorful sets and clothes in this video are gorgeous.

What do you have going on this weekend? I’m really trying to enjoy these last few weekends of summer before my not-so-little girl goes off to kinder… I took her to get her haircut last week, and I still can’t get over how much she’s grown over the last year.

Have a great rest of your day. Talk to ya soon. 😸

This or That: The Bold Lip Edition

August 6th, 2021 by Karen 14 Comments

mac quite the standout feels so grand mac smash
Let’s go bold lips!

How to play

Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. ?

This or That: The Bold Lip Edition

  • A neon hot pink matte lipstick or a richly pigmented red gloss?
  • Bold lips with bold eyes: yes or no?
  • To go with your bold lips: a lip liner with a soft texture or a hard texture?
  • Black lipstick or navy lipstick?
  • Matte orange or metallic green lipstick?
  • What’s easier for you to use, a bright lipstick in a liquid formula, or a bold lipstick in a bullet?
  • Would you like bold gloss with or without glitter?
  • Your favorite red lipstick: apply straight from the tube or with a brush?
  • Would you rather have a budget bold lip color that you absolutely love and wear all the time or an expensive bold lip color that you feel “meh” about and only wear once every few months?
  • What happens to you more: your lip color smearing outside your lips or your lipstick ending up on your teeth?
  • Spend or splurge on your bold lip color?
  • Spend or splurge on your bold lip liner?

A neon hot pink matte lipstick or a richly pigmented red gloss?

Neon hot pink matte lipstick, which I’d wear with a flat matte black winged liner and lots of mascara. 😉

Bold lips with bold eyes: yes or no?

YES, QUEEN! 🤩

To go with your bold lips: a lip liner with a smooth texture or a hard texture?

Smooooooove… I don’t need to fight my liner, ya know?

Black lipstick or navy lipstick?

Black, so I can relive my wanna-be goth days circa 1991, ha ha ha.

Matte orange or metallic green lipstick?

OK, so yeah, a metallic green is tempting because of the fun factor, but I’m going with the matte orange, because it’s got more of that classic vibe, and that’s how I’m leaning these days.

What’s easier for you to use, a bright lipstick in a liquid formula, or a bold lipstick in a bullet?

Hmm… Lipstick in a bullet, I guess, because it’s easier to control? Not sure about this one. 🤔

Would you like bold gloss with or without glitter?

I would like it with glitter! — because might as well go all the way.

Your favorite red lipstick: apply straight from the tube or with a brush?

Straight from the tube, baby.

Would you rather have a budget bold lip color that you absolutely love and wear all the time or an expensive bold lip color that you feel “meh” about and only wear once every few months?

Sigh… I mean, I don’t want any dead weight taking up space in my collection anymore, so I choose the budget bold color. 100%

What happens to you more: your lip color smearing outside your lips or your lipstick ending up on your teeth?

Yargh, if I had a dollar for every time my red or pink lipstick unintentionally ended up on my cheeks or my chin…

Skimp or splurge on your bold lip color?

Splurge!

Spend or splurge on your bold lip liner?

Skimp, because there are so many affordable ones out there.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF, my sweet friend! 🤗❤️😸

Product Spotlight: Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Clique

August 5th, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

laura-mercier clique velour extreme matte lipstick
Reddish pink perfection!

Srsly, who knows more about chic, effortless makeup than Laura Mercier? Thanks to LM’s intensely pigmented reddish pink Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Clique, you’ll swoon, then pick yourself up, then pull together a lovely look in a few quick swipes. Just add black kitten liner, a lengthening mascara, your favorite blush, and you’re off to adventure! 😺

If you’re already gently dipping your toes into fall season makeup like I am…or you intend to start soon, the ultra-matte formula is perfect. Velvety and smooth, it doesn’t make my lips flake and doesn’t leave behind any dry spots at the end of the day.

Oh, and FYI, you won’t need a separate lip liner because there’s a hidden sharpener in the tube! Use it to file the twist-up lippie down to a fine tip, and then draw a sharp edge along your lip line.

These are normally $30, but they’re on sale right now on lauramercier.com for $21! Also, while you’re there, you might as well check out the Roseglow Caviar Sticks, too…if you 1) love hidden gems and 2) are into bright, glowing lids. 😊

Tell Me About Your Current Beauty Loves…

August 4th, 2021 by Karen 21 Comments

honest beauty get it together eyeshadow palette
The Honest Beauty Get It Together Eyeshadow Palette, $19.99

Inquiring minds want to know! What shampoo, zit medicine, exfoliating face scrub, mask, liquid liner or eyeshadow has been making you swoon? Hair, makeup, skin care, perfume, you name it — please share. I want to hear the deets.

I’m always curious about the things my beauty buddies adore and recommend, so please don’t hoard this critical information! Share it with me! I want to know everything you’ve been into lately and why you love it.

Truth bomb — I’m partly motivated to ask this because I’ve got a Nordstrom birthday gift card burning a hole in my Kate Spade purse. 😁

Here are some of my beauty loves as of late, and if it feels like I talk about these things nonstop here…it’s almost certainly because I do, ha! (Sorry, not sorry.)

Things have changed a bit as I’ve scaled down my beauty collection over the past few months. Like, I’ve discovered that I’m straight-up happier with a smaller number of products I absolutely adore than I am with a larger collection of items I hardly ever wear. This has also changed the focus of my coverage here on MBB, for sure, so before I get into the lurvable products themselves, I just want to say thank you for sticking around. 😊

Anywho, my current (as of right at this precise moment) beauty loves! (Note: Subject to change in about 10 minutes.)

Honest Beauty Get It Together Palette

For now at least, this feels like the only palette I need! There’s a good variety of colors and finishes in it (mostly mattes and satins, with a few non-disco shimmers). It also includes all of the practical-slash-useful shades one needs to put the fine-tuned finishing touches on an eye look, like a matte bone (which I use as an all-over lid base in lieu of a separate primer) and a matte black (handy for lining or smoking out any of the colors). Quality-wise, the shadows blend well and don’t crease, so this is a winner, winner chicken dinner. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Chantecaille Cheek Gelee and Radiance Gel Bronzer

So, it’s hot here right now, like it is throughout huge swaths of the Western United States, and the thought of wearing anything remotely powder based on my face…is very unappealing to me. I don’t want to feel like I’m wearing five pounds of product on my skin. Consequently, this gel blush and bronzer add casual, lightweight color and life to my cheeks while simultaneously not spotlighting ye olde pores, and they stay put even when I’m glistening with nature’s highlighter, a.k.a. when I’m sweating buckets. LOL!

When you wanna wear blush and bronzer but can’t be bothered with foundation, there’s Chantecaille gel blush and bronzer.
chantecaille blush bronzer swatches
Cheek Gelee Blush in Happy (cute name, yeah?) and Radiance Gel Bronzer. I’m 100% sure you’re gonna ask me about the polish. It’s Chanel Purple Ray. 😊

Chanel Boy de Chanel Brow Pencil

This brow pencil is sold in Chanel’s makeup line marketed for guys, but don’t let that stop ya! It’s sweat-proof (YES) and perfectly pigmented. Yes, you can see it, but ooh — it looks so natural!

mac crossfade april 22
That’s Chanel Boy Brow Pencil in my brows! I’m also wearing Laura Mercier Wheat Eye Basics, NARS Isolde Duo, NARS Coconut Grove (worn wet as liner) and NARS Bengali eyeshadow singles, Chanel Espresso Liner and Laura Mercier Caviar Mascara

I rarely swoon over brow pencils, but this one will sweep even the most seasoned makeup lover off her feet, because it works so darn quickly. Figuratively, I can do my brows with a snap of my fingers! If El Hub ever asked me to buy him a brow pencil…I’d buy him this one, and then I’d keep it for myself. 😁

Can’t wait to hear about yours!

Empties! Skin Care and Hair From CeraVe, Pattern, Hawaiian Tropic and More

August 3rd, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

empties august 2021
Stuff I’ve finished!

I’ve used up quite a few beauty items over the last month! Mostly, skin care (I’m obsessed, apparently), but a smattering of hair care products, too. Consequently, here are my two cents on what’s worth your time…

Pattern Leave-In Conditioner

One of the BEST leave-ins I’ve ever tried — ever! — so I’m totally buying another bottle. For reference, my hair is wavy, on the drier side, and it needs a lot of hydration. If your curls/waves desire major moisture as well, just squeeze a dollop into your palms (it smells faintly of honeysuckle), and then work it through your strands for smooth, hydrated hair with plenty of volume.

FYI, it’s silicone-free! $25 for a 9.9-ounce tube.

CeraVe Healing Ointment

This thick, rich petrolatum-based moisturizer has become a staple at our house because it does a bit of of everything. I use it on all of the dry parts that frequently require extra TLC, like my lips, cuticles, heels and hands, and when I overdo it a little on the chemical exfoliators or retinol and it hurts to smile 😬 (you know the feeling), I dab a little at the corners of my mouth and around the base of my nostrils, and all is well with the world…

It’s also a minor miracle worker on the scrapes, scratches and bug bites Connor seems to get daily from playing hard on the playground. It seems to speed up the recovery process, too. I love this enough to get it in a large size.

$10.99 for a 3-ounce tube.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser and CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Why do all of my favorite skin care things run out at the same time? LOL! I’ve been steadily using the CeraVe SA Renewing Cleanser in the morning and the Hydrating Facial Cleanser at night for several months, and I’m quite happy with the results. They’re gentle and don’t strip my combination dry and oily skin, and they don’t aggravate my acne either. Good stuff.

I love trying new face washes, so I’ll probably get some fresh blood into the mix, but I also plan to keep these guys on standby for when I need something familiar and comforting. An 8-ounce bottle of the Renewing SA Cleanser is $13.99, and a big 16-ounce bottle of the Hydrating Facial Cleanser is $16.99.

Trader Joe’s Hydrating Hyaluronic Body Gel Cream

Grab this quick-absorbing gel cream if you see it at TJ’s, and be sure to use it before fall, because it’s lightweight but yet hella moisturizing — perfect for the dog days of summer. $6.99 for a 12-ounce bottle with a pump.

Hawaiian Tropic AntiOxidant Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30

I found this on one of those “best of” lists, and although I like 1) how well it shields my skin from the sun, and 2) how it doesn’t stain my white shirts, the scent bothers me… It smells like plastic and artificial coconuts, and it churns my tummy. I won’t be rebuying it because of that, but if you can get past the smell, it’s a decent and affordable sunscreen. $13.99 for a 6-ounce bottle.

Bliss Block Star Invisible Daily Sunscreen SPF 30

My love for this mineral tinted sunscreen knows no bounds! Totally buying this again. If I find it on sale, OF COURSE I will let you know, girl. $24.49 for a 1.4-ounces tube.

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion 50+

This sunscreen was a staple of mine years ago, and I forgot about it for a bit. All I have to say about it now is that we’re reunited, and it feels so good! I still really love it. Yes, it’s pricey, but if your skin is combo and/or dry like mine, you’ll probably love it as well. It’s not drying, doesn’t leave a cast, and it isn’t sticky on skin. It’s also extremely waterproof, so if you’re sweating up a storm like I’ve been lately, trust that it will not run off your face. It smells like a fresh lemon drink and vacation, too. I’ve gone through countless bottles and predict yet another one in my immediate future. $49 for a 5.07-ounce bottle.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2%

I love the price of this hydrating serum. It’s super affordable. I’ve been layering it underneath face cream for a moisturizing boost, but I can’t tell if it’s actually doing any heavy lifting… I probably won’t buy it again, but it might be worth trying if you’re curious and have dry skin. $6.80 for 1-ounce bottle with a dropper.

Have you finished anything lately?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
