Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 670

July 25th, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

Do you know any really good cat sunglasses? With polarized lenses? Maybe also blue-blockers? Tabs had so many pairs, but Rosie wants something a little different. It doesn’t have to be a fancy brand like Prada or Dior, but they have to be stylish, and they have to be good. She was very emphatic about that.

Anyway, if you know of a good pair, let me know, and I’ll tell Rosie. Thanks! 😊

Regal Rosie

Today for her walk, Rosie got dressed up a little.

Nothing too fancy, just some jewels, but yeah, she was feeling herself.

She even did a little kitty modeling…

What did you do this weekend? Rosie says meow, BTW.

MWAH!

OK, team. My calendar, along with all of the marketing people across the beauty-sphere, keep reminding me that National Lipstick Day is FIVE SLEEPS AWAY. I think that’s plenty of time for us to join forces, mount up and put on some face paint this July 29th to celebrate that 1) we’re here and we’re still kickin’, and 2) lipstick is fun and fantastic. 😘

I’m thinking of doing Stila Beso, but only if — AHEM! — I can find it. I stashed it away someplace a few weeks ago, probably in that one “mom purse” I have that’s like a black hole for everything. (I swear I put stuff in there, and it never returns.)

Even if I can’t find Beso (BOO), I promise to try my best to wear a color that won’t instantly put you to sleep, ha ha ha! 😹

This week’s reading

  • Here’s how to tell if your eyes are hooded, and a few makeup tricks to make ’em pop.
  • Melt-proof makeup to beat the heat!
  • Simone Biles is my queen! Did you know that she does her own hair and makeup at the Olympics?
  • Reverse cat eye. It’s a thing.
  • Target is the promised land, because not only can you get 36 rolls of toilet paper there in one fell swoop, but you’ll also be able to buy Clinique (and a bunch of other top Ulta brands) there pretty soon, too!

  • What are your thoughts on eyeliner stickers?! On the one hand, convenience. Always a good thing, right? But I don’t think I’d enjoy feeling something sitting on top of my lids. I can just see myself ripping ’em off after five minutes, LOL.

  • Netflix has a new series featuring feline enthusiasts!

THIS IS SO GOOD.

I have no idea why, but I just love this so much.

Somebody please make this for me, thanks.

Drop that knowledge, JVN.

So colorful and beautiful

So, what’s the plan for the rest of the weekend (besides hunting for a lipstick to wear on Thursday)? Doing anything fun? I’m going to try to get outside for a bit at some point, maybe for a picnic or a hike. It’s important for the heart and soul (allergies notwithstanding).

Take care and chat soon. 😊

A Plethora of Plum! Plum Lids, Liner and Glossy Plum Lips (and a Poll)

July 23rd, 2021 by Karen 25 Comments

When your hair is crazy but you go with it.

I just saw a picture of Toni Colette (LOVE HER) in a magazine, and her makeup looked so beautiful… I wish I knew who the makeup artist was because I really like it. It looks like she’s wearing dark plum liner, matte neutral lids and a glossy plum lip… Anyway, I’m into it, and it inspired my makeup yesterday.

Of course, I had to put my own spin on it! 😁 Toni looks like she’s wearing full coverage based on how even her skin looks, and her brows look bold (but not too bold) and filled in, but I did a softer brow and just the sheerest amount of base I could get away with.

One of these days I’ll try a version of this look with fuller coverage and bolder brows. I think it could look very elegant for a dinner party or a night out with the girls.

See the plum on my lash and waterlines?

I have the details listed below, but ya know, as always, if you have any questions about it, hit me up!

Makeup worn in this look:

  • BASE: Avene Solaire UV Tinted SPF 50
  • EYES: Honest Beauty Get It Together Eyeshadow Palette, Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara, Boy de Chanel Eyebrow Pencil in Deep Brown, MAC Prunella Pencil, Hourglass Retouching Fluid in Sand
  • CHEEKS: Chanel Blush No. 20, Laura Mercier Ginger
  • LIPS: Chanel Rouge Allure in 91 Seduisante and Rouge Coco Gloss in 754 Confusion

In other news…

People magazine, by the way. I don’t have a subscription, but a free issue arrived randomly in the mail, and despite the fact that I’m not really into celeb gossip…if I’m in a waiting room or at the salon, I will devour US Weekly and People with no shame.

Anywho, the feature with Toni was a Q&A with a bunch of questions I thought I’d “borrow” for us here. It might be fun if you’re up for it! You know I love me a poll, and not just on Monday mornings, ha!

Here we go. Just copy and paste, and add your answers in the comments:

  • Last time I sang out loud
  • Last thing I discovered about myself
  • Last moment of self-care
  • Last time I bonded with a horse
  • Last moment of bliss

Here are my answers…

Last time I sang out loud

This morning in the shower, and the song was De Ja Vu by Olivia Rodrigo, which is a bit too high for my vocal range, but I try anyway.

Last thing I discovered about myself

I like rowing more than running.

Last moment of self-care

Last night. I put my phone on sleep mode and stashed it in another room about an hour before bedtime so I wouldn’t be tempted to mindlessly scroll before going to sleep. I’ve been doing this for the past week, and it helps me fall asleep faster.

Last time I bonded with a horse

The one and only time I ever rode a horse, which was in Hawaii a couple years ago.

Last moment of bliss

Yesterday morning. I’d finished a long spinning class, and my body felt so spent (in a good way). Then when I was stretching afterwards, and the sweat was just rolling off every inch of me, I just felt so relaxed and chill… It was glorious!

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

July 22nd, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

sweat cosmetics k mat
Halfway through class and sweating like a mofo

1. Working out at the gym in a class with real, live people!

DANG. I can’t believe I’m only realizing this now after how many years roaming the earth, but working out at the gym with friends in a class is much more fun and SO MUCH SWEATIER than working out alone in your bedroom in front of a screen. OMG!

I’ve missed this workout whiteboard.

I know we all had to do what we had to do when the world hit the pause button (and hopefully we don’t all have to hit the pause button again soon), so I’ve been working out at home, and I only recently felt comfortable enough going back to the gym here in our area.

The HIIT class I used to take is now held outdoors, and I just recently started going back again twice a week.

Wow! — I feel like a completely different person. Exercising with a group is so completely different than exercising alone. There are other people there to push you to keep up with them! It’s not as boring as standing alone in my bedroom and kicking and punching into the air. LOL.

I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed being able to celebrate my body by pushing it to the limits. I’m not a serious athlete or anything, but I’m so happy to have that one thing back in my life, which, truth be told, I took for granted during pre-Covid times. It’s been glorious!

The simple act of going to the gym to exercise with friends and sweat together… I’m am so grateful for it.

2. Watermelon, finally

Finally, after what has seemed like eons, I’ve finally gotten a couple of good watermelons lately.

We’ve been getting some pretty unappetizing watermelons so far this season — mushy, tasteless and downright disgusting watermelons — but they’ve been getting better lately!

Watermelon woes…

Fun fact: watermelon season runs from July through August in California, which is probably why every watermelon I’ve bought lately hasn’t been completely terrible. I’m talking yellow spots, hella webbing, and a dark, dull green color. Mmm… Ooh, and so heavy!

trader joes chili lime seasoning watermelon
DROOL!

Room temperature watermelon? WHAT IS THAT NONSENSE? In our house, the only way to eat watermelon is cold, so I precut a bunch into slices and keep them in the fridge.

3. Tomatoes from my friend’s garden

Speaking of the bounty of summer fruit, oh-em-gee, my friend Marisol gave me a whole mess of tomatoes from her garden, and I’ve been tomato-ing it up all week long for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Why do I even bother eating tomatoes the rest of the year? Summer tomatoes are where it’s at, man.

4. Applying makeup on most days, and being cool with simple looks

Makeup can be a blast, or it can be a chore, right? The best thing for me right now is to just wear whatever I feel like and be cool with simple looks. One shadow (or maybe two) on the lid, eyeliner, and then whatever else ends up on my face. I’m happy wearing a little bit. Note to self: not everything has to be complicated!

Keeping it simple and fun

5. Taking Connor to swim class

Connor started taking swimming lessons! She’ll be going every day for the next month. Last week was her first week, and I’ve found many things to love about the whole situation.

First of all, she has such a good time in the water! After her first class, she said that she had so much fun and couldn’t wait to go back the next day. Then she informed me that she was going to be a swimmer and a ballerina, and perhaps even a swimming ballerina. LOL! Seeing her enjoy herself so much really makes me happy.

Second, is it just me, or is it nice to hear the sounds of kids having fun in a pool? It sounds like summer.

Best of all, I’ve had some really good conversations with moms and caregivers there. The actual swimming lessons are 30 minutes long, so it’s long enough to get a nice chat in with somebody, and that’s just been super enjoyable for me. It’s a reminder of how much I’ve missed interacting with people… Last week I was talking to someone, and we were standing about an arm’s length away from each other and were both like, “Can you imagine doing this last year? It would’ve seemed wild!”

What have you been loving lately?

A Little Bit of Bravery

July 21st, 2021 by Karen 18 Comments

BOSSY!

If you’re bossy and you know it, shout hooray.

HOO-RAY! 😀

How cute is this palette? The cover takes me back to my stiletto wearing days! The palette ($25) and hot pink liquid lippie ($25) are by a small indie line from the SF Bay Area called Bossy Cosmetics. Both hail from Bossy’s Power Woman Essentials collection.

My spider sense gets tingly Urban Decay vibes from the palette! The shadows are a lot like UD’s — soft texture, highly pigmented, with a teeny bit of fallout. I’ve used the matte brown, matte black and shimmery olive, and those shades blend, well…like a boss. Sorry, I had to go there! 😂

I love the name of the pink lipstick — Bravery. Don’t let the flat matte fool ya either. It isn’t one of those lipsticks that splits into cracks as the day goes on. It moves with me as I smile and sing, and it feels relatively moisturizing as far as liquid matte lipsticks go. Oh, and it’s unscented and unflavored, just in case you were wondering!

This dynamic duo has been my go-to blush lately…

I swipe the Chanel cream blush in No. 20 on my cheeks, blend out the edges with my fingers, then set it with Laura Mercier Ginger blush.

I like how natural it looks!

Makeup worn in this look

  • BASE: Avene Solaire UV Tinted SPF 50
  • EYES: Bossy Cosmetics Power Woman Essentials Eye Shadow, Laura Mercier Caviar Mascara, Boy de Chanel Eyebrow Pencil in Deep Brown, MAC Teddy liner, Hourglass Retouching Fluid in Sand
  • CHEEKS: Chanel Blush No. 20, Laura Mercier Ginger
  • LIPS: Bossy Cosmetics Bravery

Speaking of bravery…if you have any extra courage to virtually relay my way, could you please send it on over? I could use a boost! Got big things to conquer in the next few months, with one of the biggest things being sending Connor to kindergarten next month…

I knew this time was just around the corner, but why did it have to come so soon??

Product Spotlight: Avene Solaire UV Mineral Multi-Defense Sunscreen and Tinted Sunscreen 50+

July 20th, 2021 by Karen 12 Comments

avene soliare uv top
SO GREAT!

I suspect that both of these bad gals will be good to the last drop! (Side note: what’s the last sunscreen you finished?) I’m well on my way to finishing both of the new liquid lotion mineral sunscreens from Avene because they’re THAT good.

Like many makeup huntresses, I’m always on the prowl… I’m always looking for that elusive “no-makeup makeup” skin — just the barest hint coverage, with just enough tint or pigment to even things out a touch, but to find something that delivers a no-makeup makeup look, offers brilliant sun protection, feels light as a feather and leaves absolutely no white cast behind? That’s the stuff of legend, or perhaps just an internet rumor, or a figment of a beauty lover’s imagination… Or is it? I’m starting to believe that the new Avene Solaire sunscreens are as close to “the one” as you can get, and, yes, in case you were wondering, both of them create the most natural-looking dewy finish, so secret admirers will assume your supernatural glow is a natural, rare gift from the heavens above.

Wearing no makeup or sunscreen…

And here I am wearing the Tinted version as my base.

Essentially, these are all that and a bag of cheese puffs. After I work in the lotion (it’s very thin and absorbs super quickly), no greasy goo is ever left behind, and my eyes don’t sting, not even after I sweat.

avene solaire uv tinted swatches

In the tinted version, rather than the typical too-pink beige that seems to be the go-to color of most tinted sunscreens, Avene opted for a darker medium tone. It looks more like a bronzer at first glance, but it should suit most skin tones based on the comments on the Avene website, as long as one blends it in thoroughly. I’m a tan gal, and the tint and sheer coverage are absolute perfection for me.

INGREDIENTS, TINTED:
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: ZINC OXIDE (12%) INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: WATER, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, PROPANEDIOL, JOJOBA ESTERS, TRIDECYL SALUCYLATE, METHYLHEPTYL ISOSTEARATE, POLGYCLYCERYL-4 DIISOSTEARATE / POLYHYDROXYSTEATEARATE/SEBACATE, NIACINAMIDE, NYLTON-12, METHYLPROPANEDIOL, COCO-CAPRYLATE, IRON OXIDES, SILICA, AVENE THERMAL SPRING WATER, SODIUM CHLORIDE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 DIPOLYHYDROXYSTEARATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, BISABOLOL, ALLANTOIN, ORYZA SATIVA (RICE) BRAN EXTRACT, LECITHIN, PHENYLPROPANOL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) EXTRACT, TOCOPHEROL, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALUS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, TETRASODIUM GLUTAMATE DIACETATE, ISOSTEARIC ACID, HYDROGENATED LECITHIN, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, SODIUM HYDROXIDE.

INGREDIENTS, UNTINTED:
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: ZINC OXIDE (12%) INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: WATER, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, PROPANEDIOL, JOJOBA ESTERS, TRIDECYL SALICYLATE, METHLHEPTYL ISOSTEARATE, POLYGLYCERYL-4 DIISOSTEARATE / POLYHYDRIXYSTEARATE/ SEBACATE, NYLON-12, NIACINAMIDE, METHYLPROPANEDIOL, COCO-CAPRYLATE, SILICA, AVENE THERMAL SPRING WATER, SODIUM CHLORIDE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 DOPOLYHYDROXYSTEARATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, BISABOLOL, ALLANTOIN, ORYZA SATIVA (RICE) BRAN EXTRACT, LECITHIN, PHENYLPROPANOL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) EXTRACT, TOCOPHEOL, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, TETRASODIUM GLUTAMATE DIACETATE, ISOSTEARIC ACID, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, SODIUM HYDROXIDE.

The dry patches and pimples I get sometimes (those jerks), which will avail themselves of any excuse to pop off, haven’t made an appearance when I’ve used either of these sunscreens, so I’ll be keeping them close for the rest of the summer, and perhaps the rest of my life?! That’s a grand statement, but dang, ’tis good stuff.

Oh, yeah, in case you were wondering how the tinted version compares to Bliss Block Star (another rock star tinted mineral sunscreen), Avene’s has a dewy finish, while Block Star is matte. Avene also has a higher SPF at 50+ compared to Block Star’s 30. Both are great, though!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 687

July 19th, 2021 by Karen 36 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Sunscreen — lotion or spray?

For my body, I like to do lotion first thing in the morning for my first layer, then touchups throughout the day using a spray.

As for my face, the routine is a little more complicated (story of my makeup life, ha). When I’m not wearing makeup, I’ll usually start with a lotion, then do touchups with either a lotion or spray throughout the day…so when I’m not wearing makeup, it’s pretty straightforward; however, if I will be wearing makeup, then I’ll do two layers of lotion, starting with the first layer, then waiting 10 minutes, then applying the second, waiting a bit more, and THEN I’ll do my makeup.

    It’s a process.

    2. Cream shadow stick, or liquid eyeshadow with a doe-foot applicator?

As of today, at this moment, let’s go with the cream shadow stick…but that could change at any minute!

    3. For your mascara, pick two: waterproof, lengthening, thickening or curling?

    Lengthening and curling please!

    4. How do you feel about brushed up eyebrows?

I used to LOVE them. Now? Not so much, at least on me. I used to feel like they looked Cara Delevingne-style voluminous, but lately I’ve felt like they’re outright aggressive. Maybe it’s because I don’t have as much natural collagen plumping up my cheeks as I get more and more into my 40s? All I know is, the older I get, the more flattering a softer, less structured and defined brow suits me.

    5. Name a type of beauty product you’ve never tried.

Hmm… I’ve never used a tanning lotion. (Really don’t have a need to, LOL.)

    6. If you had to microblade your own brows, how do you think you’d do?

Honestly, I don’t know. If I were numbed beyond belief, then maybe not so terribly? They’d be doable, I think…

Now, if, instead, I didn’t have anything to dull the pain? Girl, those brows would be a fright. I just know I’d get halfway through the first one before chickening out on the rest.

    7. Choose one brightly colored eyeliner to wear: neon green, cobalt blue, amethyst purple.

    Amethyst purple.

    8. What do you want on your ice cream sundae?

A smattering of chopped roasted nuts and a maraschino cherry. 😸 I’d also like two small sides of chocolate sauce and caramel sauce! That way I can pick and choose from each.

    9. Favorite place to get books?

It used to be the library, but I haven’t been there since pre-Covid times. Lately, I’ve been getting books from an independent bookstore in town called Copperfield’s. It’s mellow inside, and they have a good selection for a bookstore so much smaller than a typical Barnes & Noble. Of course, even if you can’t find the book you want, they’ll order it for you.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Sunscreen — lotion or spray?
    2. Cream shadow stick or liquid eyeshadow with a doefoot applicator?
    3. For your mascara, pick two: waterproof, lengthening, thickening or curling?
    4. How do you feel about brushed up eyebrows?
    5. Name a type of beauty product you’ve never tried.
    6. If you had to microblade your own brows, how do you think you’d do?
    7. Choose one brightly colored eyeliner to wear: neon green, cobalt blue, amethyst purple.
    8. What do you want on your ice cream sundae?
    9. Favorite place to get books?

P.P.S. Beautiful girl, you’re doing so well. Keep on going, and when you start feeling stuck, remember that you’re tougher than you know! You can get through whatever it is you need to get through. 🤗

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 669

July 18th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

It appears that I am destined to live with felines with exquisite taste in fine jewelry.

Tabs was a purveyor of all things bling — the more elaborate, the more he was into it. At the peak of his career, experts estimate that he was wearing upwards of $1.2 million in jewelry on a daily basis.

He did a surprisingly good job of not losing anything. I’ll give him that much. He offered a few times during my yearly reviews to throw in a diamond-encrusted tiara into my bonus, but I had to adamantly refuse, because I am the person you cannot trust your diamond-encrusted tiaras to. Like, if you had me wearing a diamond tiara in your house, I would lose it in your house.

Rosie, on the other hand, is better at keeping track of her baubles. I suspect it’s her scientific mind at work. She indulged me today by wearing this turquoise number, which was one of Tabs’s favorite pieces. She seemed a little annoyed at first because it hindered her excavation of the front yard.

Rosie

Who wore it better?

You see, she’s doing a summer entomology project on insects of Marin County, which is funded by Stanfard (I’m so proud!), but she still managed to get her work done. And she looked fabulous! 😸
