MAC Venomous Villains: 101 Things You Didn’t Know

August 14th, 2010 by Karen 170 Comments

101 Things You Didn't Know About MAC Venomous Villains

Um, do you feel that…?

The tingling in the air? It feels familiar, like something I’ve felt many times before. It’s called Disney magic, and right now it’s everywhere! 🙂

In what turned out to be the BIGGEST post I’ve ever written for the blog (so big, in fact, that I suspect the server may crash), here are 101 things you probably didn’t know about Disney and the upcoming MAC Venomous Villains collection (but certainly will now).

The collection launches in the U.S. on September 30 and internationally in October.

1. MAC used the original Disney Pantone shades to develop the colors

When designing the four Venomous Villains sub-collections — The Evil Queen (as far as we know, that’s her stage name) from 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Maleficent from 1959’s Sleeping Beauty, Cruella de Vil from 1961’s 101 Dalmations and Dr. Facilier from 2009’s The Princess and the Frog — MAC based the color stories on the original Disney character sketches and Pantone color guides.

They took it all into consideration — the attitudes of the characters, their skin tone, clothes and style — and not just the colors Disney used to ink them.

As a lifelong Disney fan and art fanatic, I’ve been looking forward to this collection for months!

Last June MAC revealed details about the upcoming release at an event in Los Angeles. Here are some pics from that event and a whole bunch of other stuff, too. 🙂

Enjoy!

Are You Getting Fresh with Me, Supernova Radiance Brightening Pen?

August 14th, 2010 by Karen 3 Comments

Written by Jamie

Today esthetician Jamie shares her thoughts on one of her favorite concealers, the Supernova Radiance Brightening Pen.

Supernova Radiance Brightening Pen

I’m always looking for “the perfect under-eye concealer,” constantly testing every product I can get my hands on. I get dark circles under my eyes, and with my extremely fair skin they look *really* noticeable.

I was in the FRESH store the other day, expecting to try their Umbrian Clay Absolute Concealer, but instead the sales assistant suggested I try the Supernova Radiance Brightening Pen ($24, available in three shades).

First, let me say that I love how weightless this feels under my eyes, and the twistable pen has an attached applicator brush, which makes it a perfect on-the-go beauty tool.

As for how well it works as a concealer…

I’m happy with it! I’m wearing it in the picture directly above, which was also taken after a few hours spent walking around in high humidity.

While I may have found my new concealer, I’m concerned that it only comes in three shades (1-porcelain to light, 2-light to medium, and 3-medium to dark). Hopefully, one of them works for you, and if you’re interested, you can find the Supernova Radiance Brightening Pen on Fresh.com, in Fresh Stores or at Sephora for $24.

Emma Watson: Her Best Hair?

August 14th, 2010 by Karen 18 Comments

Gotta give props to the girls who aren’t afraid to take risks with their hair, like Harry Potter alum Hermione Granger Emma Watson, who recently chopped her shoulder-length locks into a short pixie cut (No. 9 above), declaring it “the most liberating thing ever.”

My short-lived experience with short hair wasn’t quite as liberating. I’d gone from shoulder length to a short chin-length bob, but because I was no longer able to just pull it back into a ponytail and go, I ended up spending more time on maintenance than I’d bargained for (and more money on trips to the salon to maintain its shape).

I think Em looks great with her pixie, though. Doesn’t it play up her eyes?

Which of Emma's hairstyles do you like best?

I’ve been on a Butter London kick lately and have Old Blighty ($14), a creamy brick red with a hint of brown, on my fingertips and toes.

What about you? What are you wearing on your nails today?

MAC Dare to Wear Eyeshadow in Sassy Grass

August 13th, 2010 by Karen 11 Comments

MAC Dare to Wear Eyeshadow in Sassy Grass, $14.50.

Would you rock this?

P.S. When I see this shade I automatically think of the phrase, “Yer @ss is grass!,” a colorful playground term tossed around by the bullies at my elementary school. It was heard most often while they tormented shy, small classmates, like yours truly.

Falling for Givenchy Le Prisme Eyeshadow Quartet in Khaki Egerie

August 13th, 2010 by Karen 24 Comments

givenchy le prisme eyeshadow quartet review

After I finished freaking out over the cost of the new Givenchy Le Prisme Eyeshadow Quartet in Khaki Egerie ($56), I stepped back from the mirror and thought, “Now THAT’s what I’m talking about.”

I swear these colors make my eyes glow!

Givenchy just added it and five other quads to their permanent line, each promising highly pigmented, enduring colors, and if Khaki Egerie’s any indication of what the other quads have to offer, all of them probably warrant closer inspection.

The major selling point for me — besides the rich pigmentation and sumptuous shimmer — has to be the near absence of fallout. It’s minimal (just a tiny spec or two beneath my lower lash line and cheeks)… The soft, finely milled powders adhere to my lids without creasing or settling into my wrinkles fine lines, and they blend CRAZY good, too.
