makeup of the day saturday january 30
Makeup of the day

Good morning! Short and sweet intro today, my friend, as I’m off to do some much needed self-care in the form of a simple look with the items in the top pic (I set them aside last night to make it as easy as possible to get my face painted today).

Oh, and in case you’re interested in any of the above items…

  • Lancôme Skin Feels Good Hydrating Skin Tint Healthy Glow: Lightweight, easy to blend with fingers
  • Bite Beauty Upswing Mascara: Bring on the drama! Epic curl and length.
  • MAC Blushbaby Blush: A natural matte pinkish beige flush.
  • MAC Candy Yum Yum: An intensely pigmented neon pink that doesn’t play around.
  • Urban Decay Brow Blade: For full, lush yet natural-looking brows.
  • Lancôme Idôle Intense: A new, more intense version of Idôle (main notes are jasmine, vanilla and musk). ❤️ LOVE!

This week’s links!

  • Dior has a new makeup ambassador, Sam Visser. Fun fact about him: he launched his makeup career at the tender age of 12.
  • In case you were in need of a fancy hair perfume (because why not?), here are some luxurious-sounding options if you’re in the mood to treat yo’ self (I vote for the Acqua di Parma one.)
  • —-> Favorite read of the week.
  • Something I never thought I would ever ponder: Can I apply lipstick after taking my mask off in public?
  • The times, they are a-changin’, as Army soldier women will now be allowed to wear lipstick, nail polish and locs.
  • This woman’s car was stolen with her cat inside, and here’s how she got her 19-pound calico back.
  • Have you ever wondered what ylang-ylang smells like?

Speaking of ylang-ylang

“You know that love survives.”

Love Molly!

So pretty

Ooh, talk to me.

Let’s stretch!

Get ready to declutter.

Are you ready?

FEELINGS

Can’t wait to drink tea and listen to this.

Interesting

Yay, more books!

The makeup!

To quote Liz Lemon, “I want to go to there.”

Take care of yourself, and have a great weekend. ?

5 Sheer Foundations to Ace Your WFH Base | Friday Thoughts on Looking Good on the Outside and Feeling Good on the Inside

January 29th, 2021 by Karen 17 Comments

5 sheer wfh foundations
Five wonders of the makeup world

If there were ever a time to appreciate the wonders of a sheer, everyday workhorse foundation, this would be that time!

These are my favorites at the moment. What are yours?

5 Sheer Foundations to Ace Your WFH Base

  1. Lancôme Skin Feels Good Hydrating Skin Tint Healthy Glow: Ultra lightweight with a demi-matte finish; looks great in person AND in pics.
  2. MAC Face and Body Foundation: The most natural-looking of all the sheer bases, and it’s long-lasting too. I kid you not, skin still looks like skin when you wear this.
  3. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Tinted Moisturizer: A beautiful satiny finish with medium coverage! Plus, it blurs pores.
  4. It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare: This one is also medium coverage, but the finish is closer to matte than the others. The barely-there formula practically feels like water.
  5. MAC Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick: This one is SO easy to blend and has a gentle, soft matte finish. Sometimes I like layering this on top of Face and Body. ?

Thoughts on looking good and feeling good

Most of the time, when we look good, we feel good. I heard something along these lines recently in a fashion video (it was about how not to look “frumpy,” in case you’re curious), and it spoke to me.

At the beginning, Erin, the host of the show, says…

“We’re talking about how the way you look affects the way that you feel, affects everything in your life. When you’re looking good, you will feel better. You will feel great. You will have more to give everybody else.”

This struck a chord with me, because whenever I have something to give — whether it be my time, energy, money, love, etc. — I always give what I have to my friends and family, which I’m always happy to do, but what I hadn’t realized, though, is that the strain of the past year has left me with very little (or rather, zero) leftover “oomph” for myself, and it’s been slowly chipping away at my confidence. My proverbial well is bone dry.

Lately, I can feel myself getting dangerously close to the point where one rolls out of bed one day and stays in the same crusty pajamas for two weeks straight.

I think a part of it is my hair, to be honest. I haven’t had a cut in more than a year, and it’s been bothering me. I haven’t wanted to do anything with it lately, because it’s almost impossible to wrangle it into any sort of workable style. That frustration then leads to me saying, “well, f*ck it,” to everything else. Why bother putting on sunscreen or mascara when none of it feels fun?

ouai pet shampoo
This cat looks like how I feel in the mornings lately…

Oh, and forget about getting properly dressed, because nobody will notice if my shirt is inside out or backwards — not even the people I live with, and I know this because it’s happened several times.

Because I haven’t really talked to anyone in person lately, unless it’s the occasional curt one- or two-minute conversation with the sales associate in the checkout line at Petco, or a brief in-passing conversation at preschool dropoff, I sometimes find myself wondering, “Why do I even keep trying?”

The funny thing is, logically I know that 1) this is all temporary, and 2) what’s mostly bothering me is exterior stuff. It’s all frosting, and not the cake, which is something I tell Connor all the time. I know in the grand scheme of things that the outside stuff is frippery. I’m 100% aware that what’s on the outside does not determine my worth on the inside.

baked sprinkle cake
You know I had to do it.

Yet…when I look in the mirror and see myself looking sloppy or unkept, even when I remind myself that the exterior stuff isn’t everything, and all the best stuff is on the inside, I still feel yucky. ?‍♀️

People often say that the first step to helping yourself is being able to admit that you need help, and watching that video made me realize that I need a little help.

So, here I am, gently reminding myself that doing the things that make me feel good are not a trivial burden. Brushing my hair, putting on sunscreen in the morning, and curling my lashes — these are all good things, and they are worth the effort, because when I look good, I feel good, and I will have more to give.

keep room in your heart

Oh, and another gentle note to self: it really doesn’t have to be hard. The effort does not have to be Herculean.

For the last few nights, right before bed, I’ve been setting out a bottle of one of the sheer bases listed above, along with a lash curler, a mascara, a brow pencil, blush and a lipstick, and I make sure to put on makeup first thing in the morning.

Surprise, surprise! — I’ve been feeling a little better since I started doing this, and my plan for the next few days is to do the same tomorrow, and the next day, and the next….

Oh, and earlier this week I bought myself some clothes for the first time in…I can’t even remember how long.

Also, I found a stylist who does outdoor cuts. Mind you, I haven’t booked an appointment yet because of the virus and whatnot. I’m still nervous about the pandemic, but at least I know that, when I’m ready, she’ll be there, and that’s such a mental relief.

Anyway, that’s what’s been going on with me. Thanks for listening, and on that note…

It’s a CeraVe Jamboree! CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream Releases Moisturizing Ingredients All Night Long

January 28th, 2021 by Karen 5 Comments

This month I’m highlighting skin care products from CeraVe, a most-excellent drugstore brand. It’s a CeraVe jamboree! This week’s allstar is a notable night cream for all skin types — CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.

Why does this night cream not come in a big ol’ vat…? Because it should! Yes, the dainty jar is convenient and cute. Also, yes, technically, one only needs to use a little (just a few tiny dots), but a supersized, super-fantastic jar if this hella hydrating, no-frills night cream needs to happen!

To the gals and guys who love rich bedtime moisturizers, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream could be a game-changer.

Made for all skin types, this fragrance-free, time-released face cream parses out intensely moisturizing ingredients throughout the night, so, as you sleep, your skin constantly receives a steady stream of moisture via CeraVe’s signature essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide (among other ingredients).

Benefits

  • Helps soften and renew the look of tired skin overnight
  • Provides intense hydration
  • MVE Technology: This patented delivery system continually releases moisturizing ingredients for all night hydration
  • Biomimetic peptides: Improve the appearance of tired-looking skin
  • Ceramides: Help restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier
  • Hyaluronic acid: Helps retain the skin’s natural moisture
  • Niacinamide: Helps calm the skin
  • Non-comedogenic and fragrance-free
  • Developed with dermatologists

— cerave.com

It’s a trite term, but I have “combo skin,” meaning in my case that I have an oily forehead, dry cheeks, and my face is acne-prone allllll over. I use a retinol, a BHA and benzoyl peroxide daily, and I think that one of the reasons I can tolerate all of that exfoliation is because I use CeraVe Night Cream every night.

cerave skin renewing night cream ingredients

Right after I get out of the shower, when my skin is still damp, I dab a few dots on my forehead, cheeks, chin and neck, and gently massage it in. Then I leave it to fully absorb while I put Connor to bed and prep for the next morning. Then, right before I pass out I go to bed, I apply a thin layer of retinol.

This stuff isn’t greasy (a.k.a. no sticky neck), it layers well underneath the retinol I’m currently using, and, most importantly, it’s rich enough to keep the painful peeling and dryness at bay. I probably wouldn’t be able to keep going with all of the acids, retinol and exfoliating products if I weren’t using this. To be blunt, it makes a big difference.

It’s definitely on the pricey side for drugstore skin care (about $20 for a 1.7-oz. jar, depending on where you get it), but a little goes a long way. Right now it’s $18.49 at Ulta, and they’re currently doing a buy one, get one for 50% off online, so if you’re curious, that might be the way to go.

Check In With Your Makeup-Loving Friends…

January 27th, 2021 by Karen 24 Comments

super ridiculous
Sunscreen and bare skin…in yet another picture that I probably shouldn’t be sharing on the Internet, hahaha!

Check in with your makeup-loving friends, because, chances are they’re wearing very little makeup, or no makeup at all, LOL!

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had a conversation over the past few months with a makeup-loving friend or a bonafide beauty buddy that included the phrase, “I really haven’t been wearing any makeup lately.”

Seems like everyone I know who normally loves painting their face is currently primarily sticking to sunscreen and a smile these days, and that includes yours truly.

I’m sitting here writing this post completely bare-faced, and ya know what? I’m cool with it, even though not wearing a lot of makeup has made coming up with ideas for Makeup and Beauty Blog posts…more challenging. (Side note: MBB turns 14 years old this February! OMG!)

The last full face of makeup I wore was about a week ago. It was a 15-minute variation of this matte brown eye look with coral-pink cheeks (MAC Warm Soul Blush) and lips (Honest Beauty Happiness Liquid Lipstick).

Gray hair, don’t care

I also busted out a long-time foundation favorite of mine that I haven’t used in a while, MAC Face and Body, a.k.a. LOVE OF MY LIFE.

I’ve been OBSESSED with this liquid foundation for years, and using it last week reminded me why! Whenever I drift away from it and temporarily land on a different product, it usually looks heavy or obvious. But MAC Face and Body always comes through. It has the perfect amount of sheer, natural-looking coverage, and it’s so lightweight that I can’t even feel it.

I think it looks particularly fetching with a touch of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish powder dusted on top…

mac face and body
LOVE YOU

Let it be known that I haven’t entirely stopped wearing a full-face of makeup. ? I still like to wear a little, like very scaled-down eyes with just a brow pencil, mascara and liner.

Lately, my liner of choice has been a dependable workhorse — one of the skinny waterproof Chanel twist-up pencils from the Stylo Yeux line. I’ve been all about Blackwood, which is a rich matte dark brown that’s great for tightlining, but I also love good ol’ Noir Intense and Espresso.

So, friend, where are you right now on the makeup continuum? What have you been wearing as of late?

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

January 26th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

duri burgundy charade
Nails of the week: Duri Burgundy Charade

1. Painting my nails with Duri polish

This week’s color is Burgundy Charade — which I pronounce “Sha-RHAD,” emphasis on “RHAD,” because lately the only voice I hear in my head is Moira’s on Schitt’s Creek. HAHAHA!

BEBE!

This under-the-radar family-run brand out of Brooklyn is a low-key beast in the best possible way. The polishes are pigmented, smooth, long-lasting and affordable (just $8 a bottle). I’ve also been using their top coat and drying drops, and they work great too.

SUPER IMPRESSED!

2. Caroline Girvan’s workouts on YouTube

Caroline Girvan’s YouTube workouts are challenging, and she offers very little verbal instruction, so you kinda have to know what you’re doing already, but I sure do love the variety of her exercises.

I’m constantly trying moves I’ve never done before, which I love! Challenges ye olde muscles in different ways, ya know?

Also, on days when I can’t handle someone on the other side of a screen yelling at me to dig deep or do one more pushup or whatever, Caroline’s my go-to. Her videos have a short intro where she talks about the workout, but then during the video, all you hear is music and a series of beeps to let you know that a new exercise or a break is coming up while you see her working out on the screen with you.

It’s just me and my breathing, and some days, I prefer that.

Right now I’m really into her ab and core videos.

3. Placing all of my mugs with the handles to the right…

I recently came across this tip in a how-to-organize video, and even though it’s the smallest little tweak, it works wonders! When I do this…my mug shelf looks less chaotic and better organized.

mugs to the right
To the right, to the right…

4. Speaking of organization videos…

They’re my new favorite how-tos on Youtube. I have a hard time letting go of things and hold onto items longer than I should, and I desperately don’t want to be that person anymore. No more cluttered shelves, baby! Those are my first goals. After that, I’ll do the closets next.

When I watch these organizational how-to vids, it feels like I having a personal coach by my side talking sense into me and telling me that I have the strength to pass on that pair of pants that 1) no longer fit me, and 2) I haven’t worn in five years.

Here are few of my favorites so far.

5. Having an electric kettle with hot/warm water always around

Don’t ask me why I’ve always assumed one water had to be cold in order to be consumed, but it never occurred to me until recently that I could drink water warm whenever I wanted to all throughout the day.

I have an electric kettle on the counter and now just keep it out so that I can grab a cup of warm water whenever I want!

Yes, I could easily heat up the water in the microwave, but I swear it tastes different when I warm it up in the kettle.

Speaking of kettles, how cute is this one?

What have you been loving lately?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 662

January 25th, 2021 by Karen 43 Comments

be strong coffee mug youve got this
Happy Monday, my friend!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Ramen or sushi?

Hmm… Well, this is surprisingly hard for me to answer because I love both, but seeing as it’s been cold and drizzly lately…I’ll go with ramen.

    2. How do you feel about Vitamin C serums?

I’m a fan. A few years ago when my skin was badly breaking out, Skinceuticals CE Ferulic really helped clear things up, and also helped to fade the post-acne marks! Helped to even out my skin tone.

It’s VERY pricey though…so I’ve been trying a slightly more affordable version by Vichy, and so far it’s OK. I haven’t noticed a super significant improvement since starting it, but it has only been a couple months.

Someday, just because of how good it was, I’ll probably end up going back to the Skinceuticals product.

    3. Thin or thick eyeliner?

    Thin!

    4. Something you’ve wanted for a very long time?

Oh, my goodness! Honestly, new floors, because the cats (plural) have been unkind to ye olde carpet up in here. Tabs (RIP, my boy) ripped it to shreds over the decade he lived here, and Rosie is proudly carrying on that tradition.

I would LOVE some light-colored hardwood or laminate floors, and that’s one of our top family priorities for this year, post-pandemic. I hear that laminate floors are supposed to be lower maintenance, so that’s a consideration.

    5. Do you wear any waterproof makeup?

Oh, sure. I like waterproof mascara on occasion, but I don’t wear it daily.

    6. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?

I vaguely recall living with a cockatiel when I was in elementary school…but I don’t know what happened to it. My dad was always bringing home random animals, and I suspect it just flew away one day!

    7. Last new beauty product you tried?

The Briogeo Curl Charimsa Rice Amino Leave-In Defining Creme. My waves are in the house today!

    8. What clothes are you wearing today?

Gray sweatshirt and black Zella leggings, ’cause you know…work from home FASHUN.

    9. Setting sprays: — love ’em or leave ’em?

    Love ’em!

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Ramen or sushi?
    2. How do you feel about Vitamin C serum?
    3. Thin or thick eyeliner?
    4. Something you’ve wanted for a very long time?
    5. Do you wear any waterproof makeup?
    6. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?
    7. Last new beauty product you tried?
    8. What clothes are you wearing today?
    9. Setting sprays — love ’em or leave ’em?

P.P.S. Hello and happy Monday, sweet friend. Indulge me for a second… Take a few deep breaths in and out.

OK, now do it one more time.

Try pulling and stretching your shoulders down and away from your ears when you do it…

Ahhh! Doesn’t that feel good? Do you feel a little calmer? I hope so. I do when I do it.

Remember, you’re stronger than you think! Have a good one today. ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 643

January 24th, 2021 by Karen 7 Comments

If there’s one thing Tabs loved, it was a bold rainbow statement piece. ? I mean, he loved real rainbows too. We chased many together in our years living together here in Novato. I’ve seen more rainbows in this town than any other place I’ve lived.

They take on a different meaning now that he’s gone… Whenever I see a rainbow, of course I think of him and his penchant for rainbow accessories and rainbow makeup. He was not afraid to rock a colorful eye.

Rainbow Rosie

There was a rainbow yesterday in the eastern sky, and when I told Rosie this, she shocked me by asking me to please craft a custom collar for her. I didn’t want to show too much excitement, so I tried to play it cool… I kept it understated, which I think is her style. As much as I wanted to encrust it with colorful rhinestones, I refrained and kept it simple and sleek. ?

I hesitate to call her a bonafide kitty model because I know she’s not into labels, but I have to say, these are some of her best pictures yet.

January 23rd, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

window bed balcony
Well, hello there!

Goooood morning, my dear! ? How are you?

Here’s a not-so-pressing question for you on this lovely Caturday morning: Is grapefruit great or gross?

Inquiring minds want to know…

See, I grew up in a family in which everyone loved grapefruit, so it didn’t occur to me until adulthood that the grapefruit would be such a polarizing snack. ?

El Hub and Connor are not fans, and they make a point of telling me this whenever I eat one. So I’m the lone wolf grapefruit lover in our family.

glorious grapefruit
All hail the glorious grapefruit!

I’ve been eating a ton of grapefruit lately. I’ve been in a grapefruit craving mode, and it’s been my favorite breakfast snack as of late…along with a chocolate croissant from Trader Joe’s! (Oh, my goodness, have you tried those?)

 trader joes chocolate croissant

Obvs, a freshly baked chocolate bakery croissant is ideal, but if you can’t get ahold of one, the packaged ones in the bread section at TJ’s are pretty good. They’re so good, in fact, that sometimes I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and think to myself, “I wish I were eating a Trader Joe’s chocolate croissant right now…” #TruthBomb

OK, before I get too distracted, quick shout-out to this silicone-free Pantene conditioner I grabbed on a whim recently! I use it as a co-wash, but if you have fine hair, I think you might like it as a traditional conditioner too. It’s moisturizing, not heavy at all, and dang if my hair doesn’t smell like sweet cut grass and aloe afterward. I like it.

pantene hair volume multiplier
So…this is good.

Well, my tummy is rumbling, and I need to get this chocolate croissant into my belly ASAP, so onward to this weekend’s reading!

Love this.

Dear Mariah, can I please live in your closet?

I’m working on this right now.

Working on this too…
