New in Beauty, Jan. 19: Good Stuff from Bobbi Brown, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent

January 19th, 2010 by Karen 36 Comments

Bobbi Brown Nectar Shimmer Brick

Happy Tuesday, ladies. 🙂 As I type this pre-dawn post by the dim light of my monitor and a small desk lamp in rain-soaked Novato, I’m closing my eyes and picturing Bobbi Brown’s Nectar Shimmer Brick ($38), a shimmery coral, on top of a pretty coral blush. YUM!

Dior Serum de Rouge

I can’t wait to try all eight of Dior’s new luxury lip treatments in Serum de Rouge ($32).

From left to right: Dior Serum de Rouge in Rosewood, Coral, Crimson, Raspberry, Beige, Mocha, Soft Pink and Nude

StrangeBeautiful Library of Color: Volumes 1 and 2

For the nail fiends and polish junkies of the world (I’m right there with ya!), the StrangeBeautiful Library of Color, Volume 1 and Volume 2 ($79 each, yowza!), are available for pre-order!

Yves Saint Laurent Poudre Compacte Matte Pressed Powder

SUPER CUTE! All six of YSL’s Compact Matt Pressed Powders ($46) have this embossed heart on the pan. Talk about love! 🙂

More good stuff…

  • A set of four Michael Kors Island mini-fragrances (4 x 0.25 oz Eau de Parfum rollerballs) in Fiji, Capri, Bermuda and Hawaii, $40) (click here for a review of their full-size brethren).
  • I dig the print on Chantecaille’s new Les Dauphins Palette ($77), but I’m not so sure about the shades…
  • Would you throw down $95 for Le Meteir de Beaute’s concealer?
  • Like that rabbit with the batteries, Clarins says their Everlasting Foundation ($35) keeps going and going and going…
  • Have you tried the new Chanel base ($23) and top coat ($23) for nails?

Beauty Snacks: Sites of the Day

January 18th, 2010 by Karen 7 Comments

Hi, ladies. How’s Monday coming along? I’m just trying on the new Benefit Velvet Eyeshadows (post coming this afternoon!) and surfing the web. Care to join me? Here are some potentially interesting places to start.

TREND LAND

I just love the way Trend Land showcases gigantic thumbnail images instead of long blocks of boring text. The resulting collage of fashionably stylish stuff gets my visual cortex every time. For a visual learner like me, it’s a hella reliable source of design inspiration. Sometimes I’ll even load it up when I’m stressing out and take a few deep breaths to unwind.

Scarygirl

One of the coolest Flash games ever! I can’t believe it’s free. Guide Scarygirl through a Tim Burton-esque world to find the man behind her haunting dreams.

  1. Mood:
  2. Never quite woke up today, but I think I’ll feel better after lunch…

  3. What’s one thing you’ve learned about love?
  4. That there’s some truth to the phrase, “You just know.”

  5. Flats or heels?
  6. Heels!

  7. Coffee or tea?
  8. Today? Green tea with a teaspoon of honey, please.

  9. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
  10. A combination of spring release goodies, namely Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in Nice Melons, Smashbox Berry Hot Lip Shine (from Heartbreaker) and Estee Lauder’s Michael Kors Very Hollywood Blush in Sunset Coral.

  11. Do you watch many award shows (the Golden Globes, Oscars, etc.)?
  12. Not really. Sometimes I do, but I usually rely on the roundup posts and reviews the next day.

  13. Favorite lipstick color of the moment?
  14. Still lovin’ ya, MAC Myself!

  15. What did you have for dinner last night?
  16. A veritable feast of flavors at the world-renowned Ikea in-store cafeteria. 🙂 El Hub and I went for cabinets and ended up just eating dinner there. It was actually pretty tasty. I had a chicken wrap with fries, washed down with a mysterious elderflower drink. That reminds me, what’s an elderflower?

  17. Outfit:
  18. Dark skinny jeans, O’Neill surf tee and a tan sweater. It’s cold and rainy here today!

  19. Weekly goals:

Happy MLK Day, ladies. 🙂 It’s a work holiday for El Hub, so after putting together the stuff we got from Ikea, we may catch a movie later this afternoon.

Before you jet, let me know what you’re up to today. You know how we do it…

Green Tea Kit Kat

January 18th, 2010 by Karen 21 Comments

My friend El gave me some Green Tea Kit Kat candy on Saturday. She bought a whole bunch of ’em while traveling in Asia a few months ago.

It tastes similar to a regular old Kit Kat, but more like white chocolate with a hint of green tea.

What Were Your Best and Worst Beauty Experiences of the Week?

January 17th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

MY BEST:

Yesterday I had one of those rare magical hair days, the ones where I curl my hair and the curls stay bouncy all day long, even through light rain sprinkles and gusts of wind. It was AWESOME! Of course, I was dressed like I fell off a truck (more on that below), but at least my hair looked pretty good. 🙂

MY WORST:

This one’s more clothes-related than makeup, but last Monday I took a long, hard look at my wardrobe situation. Truth be told, it’s dire. There was a time, long ago, when I thought of myself as almost fashionable. Now, though, maybe because I’m usually parked in front of a computer and/or hanging out with a cat, my attire often features jeans with holes in ’em, surf T-shirts and flip-flops, like I’m some kinda pre-teen surfer dude. NOTE: If there are any fashion stylists out there looking for a challenge, you know how to reach me, LOL!

What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Spill the beans in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Did you happen to catch the Golden Globes? Guess who won for his work in Avatar.

New in Beauty, Jan. 17: Stila Can Couture and Estee Lauder Love Your Lips

January 17th, 2010 by Karen 16 Comments

Greetings from cold and wet Northern California, ladies. 🙂 What are you up to? I was a little beat from my afternoon in San Francisco yesterday, so I kinda slept in. It’s amazing what a few extra hours of sleep will do, though… I *almost* feel like a real girl, LOL!

Lunch with the girls yesterday in the city was fun. We met at La Mar, a Peruvian restaurant near the Ferry Building with LOTS of great seafood and fancy presentation.

I’d never had Peruvian food before and didn’t know what to expect. I went in thinking it would be hotter but was glad it wasn’t (I’m a wuss when it comes to hot food). They had this Peruvian corn which I’ll never forget. It tasted like regular corn but with GIGANTIC kernels the size of grapes!

The restaurant’s a little shoo-shoo/foo-foo ($$$$), and El Hub definitely would have complained about the smallish portions, but if you’re ever in the area it might be worth it to try something new.

Speaking of new things, here’s a look around the worlds of makeup and beauty:

  • Stila’s Can Couture Instant Glam Can will help you get dolled up in a hot minute with a Major Lash mascara in black, a mini-Pomegranate Crush lip stain, mini-Convertible eyecolor in Peony and a pan of Kitten (meow!) eyeshadow.
  • Give your pucker Valentine’s Day lurvies with Estee Lauder Love Your Lips.
  • I drooled a little when I saw the Yves Saint Laurent Spring Look Palette.
  • What do ya think of Givenchy New Impressions? Have you seen the Must-Have Blue quad?
  • Luxe lips from the Guerlain Cherry Blossom collection
  • Brightening Blushes from Too Faced — yes or no?
  • A new limited-edition version of Clinique’s Happy: Happy in Bloom
  • Tarte’s Flower Child Natural Eyeshadow Palette is refillable, yay!
  • Will The Balm’s For Keeps Watercolor Lip Stains rock or not?
  • Boscia’s MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil looks neat; I just hope it isn’t drying!
  • Neutral-lovin’ babes, check out the Hourglass Cashmere and Zodiac Face Palettes.
  • New at the House of Tar-ghay — Bella B body products
  • Refresh thirsty winter skin with Kate Somerville’s Quench Hydrating Mask.
  • What’s your take on Sephora’s Sparkle Strands? Trendy or tacky?
  • I betcha Lewis Carroll would have worn the Alice in Wonderland OPI polishes.🙂
  • If you have an extra $998 sitting around…
  • Jo Malone’s Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle Set might be better than a dozen roses!

Karen
