Eye Love Cucumbers Eye Gel: Cucumbers Ain’t Just for Salads Anymore

August 10th, 2009 by Karen 24 Comments

081009-eye-love-cucumbers-yes-to-cucumbers-1

I’m riding a wave of nerdiness right now, loving the clever wordsmithery that went into naming Eye Love Cucumbers Soothing Eye Gel ($15).

Eye Love Cucumbers… Get it? 🙂

My name is Karen, and I’m addicted to puns.

(HI, KAREN!)

Okay, so the name was the real reason I wanted to give the product a try.

Cucumbers: not just for salads anymore

One of several natural skincare goodies in the Yes to Cucumbers line, Eye Love Cucumbers Eye Gel is a highly-absorbent, moisturizing gel with some great things to offer.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Aug. 10

August 10th, 2009 by Karen 47 Comments

081009-makeup-and-beauty-blog-monday-poll

  1. Mood:
  2. Chipper but not quite awake yet.

  3. At what age were you allowed to date?
  4. I was 14. Looking back, I was probably too young, but I remember at the time feeling like I was the last kid in school to start dating. I knew 11-year-old girls signing “Mrs. Joe Shmoe” in their yearbooks, yikes.

  5. Which lip gloss do you wear the most?
  6. Right now I’m all about Smashbox Limitless Lip in Boundless.

  7. Dark, milk, semi-sweet or white chocolate?
  8. Semi-sweet… or milk.

  9. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
  10. I’m only wearing minimal makeup for now — Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara, Yes to Carrots C Lip Tint in Sunset Pink and naked cheeks.

  11. What’s your favorite store at the mall?
  12. It’s a tie between Sephora and H&M (love their cheap and funky accessories).

  13. Are you hungry right now?
  14. Ha, yes! I need a sticky bun and coffee.

  15. Which supernatural being would you rather be: vampire, werewolf, shapeshifter or telepath?
  16. Telepath, but only if I could turn it on/off.

  17. Outfit:
  18. Lavender tank top and my favorite pair of Lucky jeans (the ones with the hole in the thigh, LOL!)

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Try to stay focused on one task at a time (does anybody else feel like the Net’s giving ’em ADD?), remember to take small breaks throughout each day, and sort through the ginormous piles of paper on my desk (never ends).

Good morning, my candy girls. 🙂 I was having my first ever Twitter-related dream when the alarm went off this morning. Kim Kardashian and I were chatting about eyeliner and cats.

Weird…

Are you ready and willing to tackle this week with me (we can do it!)?

Before you go, let me know how you’re doing. Just copy the empty list below, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Have a good one.

Find the faux fall makeup collection

Inspector Tabs is at it again. Britain’s High Kitty Court commissioned him to crack down on cosmetics crime, particularly the increasing number of imposter makeup collections, but he needs your help.

Can you lend him a helping paw? 🙂

Which of these is not a real fall makeup collection?

CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Eye Brightening Liner Keeps Going and Going…

August 9th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

coover-girl-exact-eyelights-review-1

I feel so secret squirrel when I’m browsing beauty aisles at the drugstore, like I’m always just moments away from a huge discovery and the unearthing of some ancient treasure lost to womankind for centuries.

Case in point: CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Eye-Brightening Eyeliner ($7).

Because it’s from a big brand like CoverGirl, the logical part of me knows I’m totally late to the party. It’s been out for months. Millions of women are well aware of the product, but such is the power of the major budget beauty score!

I’ve been wearing Exact Eyelights all weekend long, and if you don’t throw one in your basket on your next trip to Walgreens, I may have to come over to wherever you are and shake you silly. 🙂

This. Stuff. Rawks.

covergirl-exact-eyelights-review-1

Exact Eyelights Eyeliner twist-up pencils don’t require sharpening and come in four shades, each designed to complement a different eye color:

  • Vibrant Pearl: a deep black for girls with brown eyes
  • Radiant Sapphire: a dark navy for blue eyes
  • Vivid Ruby: a dark reddish brown for green eyes
  • Majestic Jade: a dark green for hazel eyes

Lasts and lasts

CoverGirl claims Exact Eyelights Eyeliner “brightens eyes by 4x.” I didn’t notice particularly brighter eyes, but I like it as a basic liner that stays put for a *very* long time.

I’ve been using the Vibrant Pearl pencil for the past few days, and this puppy stays put like nobody’s bidness.

When I’ve worn it along my lash and water lines, it hasn’t migrated, smudged or disappeared, even after 12 hours of wear. It’s not marketed as waterproof, but it might as well be.

What’s Your Guiltiest Pleasure?

August 9th, 2009 by Karen 74 Comments

Watching Lifetime with Tabs

Mine is watching cheesy Lifetime movies on TV (click here for a gigantic database!).

Every time I do it, I know I’ve lost two hours I’ll never get back, but it’s relaxing and strangely recharges my batteries. One of my favorite things in the world is chilling out on the couch in front of a movie like Co-ed Call Girl (starring Tori Spelling!). For those two hours, my cares and responsibilities just float away. Forget cleaning the bathroom or bettering myself; sometimes my brain craves happy endings and pureed mush (the woman-in-peril ones are my faves!). 🙂

What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Please share in the comments.

Karen

1 Month with Twitter

August 8th, 2009 by Karen 13 Comments

One month with Twitter

Today marks the end of my first month as a Tweet-head/Twitterer, and I think I’m beginning to get a picture of the service’s big strengths and weaknesses (and how to work around them).

Twitter’s strengths?

  1. Keeping up with news — Find out about stuff fast. By the time something appears on the front page of Yahoo or Google News it’s probably already been tweeted about 1 million times.
  2. Taking advantage of e-bargains — There’s an ecosystem on Twitter between companies and their prospective customers where the companies feed out these little tweets to their followers with ways to take advantage of discounts and giveaways, many lasting just a few minutes or hours. A lot of beauty companies are getting in on the action, and I’m seeing new spins on Twitter-only giveaways every day.
  3. Networking — Both personally and professionally. Twitter is like texting, only the texts go out to all of your Twitter followers. People use Twitter to get instant feedback, but you don’t have to be at the computer every second of the day. Replies are saved to your Twitter page, so you check them whenever you want.
  4. bellasugar-twitter-biggerbellasugar — How-To: Christina Hendricks’s Shimmery, Smoky Eye Makeup
    http://bellasu.gr/3749897

  5. Sense of camaraderie — It helps me feel connected to the outside world. If you’re homebound or sick, it gives you a way to reach out to people. Even if you’re just shy and have trouble connecting with people, it gives you another means to practice your social skills.

Filling out your settings can help people find you

TIP: After creating an account, follow 10-20 people, and fill out your Settings page. Choose a colorful design for your page, and upload a picture (if you have one) to appear beside all of your tweets.

Twitter’s weaknesses?

  1. Starting with 0 followers — The one big weakness I see is for people just starting out. There really isn’t a clear path to take, and I see a lot of new Twitterers start out with 0 followers and then never use the service again. It can feel like an echo chamber at first, with people tweeting things into cyberspace like, “Is this thing on?” or “Hello?? Anyone out there?”

Right after making an account, I think it helps to immediately follow 10-20 people (even ask your friends to join with you), and it almost doesn’t matter who they are (not at first), as long as a few of them follow you back.

Twitter Direct Messages featureTwitter’s Direct Messaging feature (DM) comes in handy, too, particularly when you’re just starting out. To send a DM, you have to be following the person you’re trying to reach, but with it you may be able to get their attention even if they aren’t following you yet. — CORRECTION: The person has to be following you (obviously, I’m still getting the hang of this feature — Thanks, PumpsAndGloss!).
  2. Filtering out the noise — Ironically, while it can be lonely just starting out with Twitter when you have 0 followers, things can change literally overnight. You pick up some followers and suddenly find yourself trying to carry on multiple conversations at once!

Programs like Tweetdeck can help. It’s easy to download and install (I use it), connects to Twitter.com and makes it easy to group followers into categories. I have categories for the beauty companies I follow, my friends and my freelancing contacts.
  3. It can be addictive — Just like instant messaging, Twitter can take up a lot of time, but the same thing goes for anything fun and useful. Everything in moderation.

Karen

Do $8 Sonia Kashuk Velvety Shine Lip Crayons Give the $22 Bobbi Brown Lip Crayons a Run for Their Money?

August 8th, 2009 by Karen 34 Comments

sonia-kashuk-velvety-shine-lip-crayon-review-swatches-final

Seriously, let’s just hand Sonia Kashuk the keys to the drugstore makeup queendom already.

SK consistently creates quality makeup able to pass for department store stuff, and the best part is it’s *always* affordable.

Like her $8 Velvety Shine Lip Crayons from last spring…

They’d be almost dupes for Bobbi Brown Lip Crayons ($22) if it weren’t for the fact that they cost a fraction of the price.

Swatches from left to right: Sonia Kashuk Pale Pink, Bobbi Brown Posey, Sonia Kashuk Luscious Pink

Sonia’s lip crayons even feel like their far more expensive Bobbi cousins, with a similar non-sticky texture, opaque coverage and super shiny finish. Plus, like Bobbi’s crayons, Sonia’s last all day without drying out my lips.

Pale Pink

Bobbi’s lip crayons do come in a wider selection of colors, though, and I like the faint cooling sensation they produce.

But I’m not sure those make them worth the extra cost…

Sonia Kashuk’s Velvety Shine Lip Crayons come in three shades (Hot Pink, Pale Pink and Luscious Pink). I’ve tried Luscious Pink (a creamy rose) and Pale Pink (a creamy pinkish coral).

I’m totally in love with Pale Pink; it’s almost twins with Bobbi Brown’s Posey, which I wore a few days ago in my look for Ivy League. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A-to-the-PLUS!

I didn’t see the Velvety Shines available on the Target website, but they should be carried in your local store.

Saturday plans?

It looks like the fog took a day off today here in the Bay Area, so we just might get a sunny day.

No big plans for me other than a run around the neighborhood, and then maybe a trip to the mall to do some window shopping.

I promised myself that I couldn’t have any fun, though, until I got my laundry done, boo! The only clean shirts I have left either have holes in ’em or look like they’re made out of cat fur. 🙂

Four loads o’ laundry, here I come!

What are you up to today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
