Lip Look: Chanel Equinoxe Glossimer Lipgloss

May 13th, 2008 by Karen 29 Comments

Life is like a tube of lipgloss… You never know what you’re gonna get. Take Chanel’s Equinoxe Glossimer, for example, which looks totally lunch lady scary in the tube, but on my kisser it looks like a completely different product (with a lovely nude, golden pink glow).

Two coats of Equinoxe Glossimer layered on top of MAC’s Syrup lipstick give me what I like to call “fight the power” glow. A product with purple and gold flecks may not sound appropriate for the workplace, but Equinoxe is subtle enough for most office environments.

Nubian Heritage Carrot & Pomegranate Lotion: Making the World a Softer Place

May 12th, 2008 by Karen 13 Comments

I love it when companies make great, affordable beauty products and give some of the proceeds to a worthy cause. A friend of mine recently turned me on to Nubian Heritage Carrot & Pomegranate Lotion ($12), which won my heart not only on the merits of the lotion, but also on the company’s efforts to make the world a better place.

Nubian Heritage, an up-and-coming skincare company specializing in organic products, got its start in 1991 when founders Richelieu Dennis and Nyema Tubman, both friends, immigrated to the United States from their home country of Liberia. The country was in the midst of a terrible civil war at the time.

Dennis comes from a family of soap makers, and, with Tubman’s help, put that background to work selling Nubian Heritage products on the sidewalks of New York City in 1992. The recipes used to make their products date back four generations.

The company has come a long way since those early sidewalk sales. Today, Nubian Heritage has four free-standing stores and offers a full line of body products, including soaps, lotions, scrubs, body washes, lip balms, body butters and hand creams.

When I first saw Nubian Heritage’s Carrot and Pomegranate lotion I assumed it would smell like, well, carrots and pomegranates. Seemed logical, right? I think it smells more like pineapples and flowers, two very appealing scents in their own right. In fact, the carrot and pomegranate in the name refer to two of the main ingredients — carrot seed, for its high vitamin and beta carotene content, and pomegranate, which has been used for thousands of years to treat skin problems.

Without question, it’s a great, highly moisturizing lotion, but the fragrance and the story behind the company are what make it truly exceptional.

Carrot & Pomegranate is one of 10 lotions in the line ($12 for a 13oz bottle; $10 for an 8oz bottle), each designed to treat a different skin condition and to bring about emotional and spiritual balance. Carrot & Pomegranate is the line’s anti-aging wunderkin.

The Other Nubian Heritage Lotions

  • African Black Soap Extract Lotion with Oats & Aloe : Contains shea butter, palm ash, plantain peel extract and papaya enzymes. Designed to balance and hydrate acne-prone skin. Has a spicy, woody, unisex scent.
  • Coconut and Papaya: Contains coconut oil, shea butter, papaya enzymes and comfrey root. Designed to protect skin against free radicals and to prevent wrinkles and acne. Has a sweet, tropical scent.
  • Goat’s Milk and Chai: Contains shea butter, goat milk, chai extract and rose extract. Designed to condition and hydrate sensitive skin. Has a sweet tea and rose scent. Side note: despite my fear of goats, this is the one I want to try next!
  • Indian Hemp and Haitian Vetiver Lotion: Contains shea butter, hemp seed oil, neem oil, vetiver and vitamin B5. Designed to balance and comfort skin. Has an herbal, exotic floral scent.
  • Lavender and Wildflowers Lotion: Contains shea butter, lavender and wildflowers. Designed to condition skin and to calm the mind and body. Has a sweet, floral, herbal scent.
  • Mango Butter: Contains mango butter, shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado butter and aloe vera. Designed to provide maximum hydration for all skin types. Has a fruity, tropical scent.
  • NH Man Drive Three Butters: I couldn’t find the list of ingredients for this one, but I’m assuming it smells, well … manly!
  • Olive: Contains olive oil, shea butter, avocado butter, green tea and ginseng extract. Designed for deep hydration and to repair environmental damage. Has a sweet, musky floral scent.
  • Raw Shea Butter: Contains raw shea butter, soy milk, vitamin E, frankincense and myrrh. Designed to heal chapped, dry skin while promoting mental strength, clarity and balance. Has a spicy scent.

Face of the Day: Bold Blue and Teal Eye

May 12th, 2008 by Karen 47 Comments

Hey, girls. It’s Monday and I’m feeling kind of blah, so to improve my outlook on this most dreaded of week days, I tried this really fun blue/teal eye with Sonia Kashuk’s Blue Lagoon Eye Shadow Quad ($9.99).

Flower and Petal by Cynthia Rowley: Two New Avon Fragrances

May 11th, 2008 by Karen 20 Comments

cynthia-rowley-avon-flower-petal

American fashion designer Cynthia Rowley has created two new floral fragrances for Avon, Flower ($30) and Petal ($15). Their cute, vintage bottles, and the rave reviews by women on the Avon website, prompted me to give them a try. Plus, I had another reason: Cynthia rocks. She also designed these fierce eyeglasses that I’ve been wanting for a while.

Avon bills the two new fragrances as a “mother-daughter” combo (awww). To create Flower, Rowley combined musk and vanilla with lily and freesia notes, producing a spicy, mature scent. Petal, on the other hand, is the more playful, youthful fragrance of the two, fresh and light, made with Lily of the Valley.

Yesterday morning, I sprayed Flower on my right wrist and Petal on my left. I was more drawn to Petal’s fresh, green scent, but as the morning wore on I grew tired of its sweetness. By the end of the morning, I felt like I’d dipped my wrist in a vat of candy necklaces. It’s a pretty scent but a bit too sweet for me (or maybe I’m just too old and bitter, ha!). I think it’ll be more appealing to my teenage cousin.

Flower, however, appealed to me even more as the day progressed. It started with a strong burst of freesia but within a few hours took on more of a musky, warm vanilla scent, rich and light but not overpowering. I’m going to start wearing it to work. Good job, Cynthia!

Clarins Wonder Mint Mascara, aka the Teal Terror

May 10th, 2008 by Karen 18 Comments

Hi, homies! I’m at Macy’s right now buying eye makeup remover. I just saw this amazing teal-colored waterproof mascara from Clarins. The shade is Wonder Mint and it’s $23. Sadly, they are out of it right now, so no teal mascara for me! It’s pretty though, yah?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Sorry, but I sent this from my crackberry, hence the Blair Witch picture quality.

China Glaze OMG Text in Colour 2BKEWL Nail Polishes: Mother’s Day Manicure

May 10th, 2008 by Karen 26 Comments

china-glaze-omg-text-in-colour-2bkewl

Happy Saturday, girls. I’m lucky enough to live close to my parents, so tomorrow I’m heading home to visit my mom for Mother’s Day. I thought it might be fun if she and I painted our nails a matching color. Here’s the twist: I would like it to be a slightly obnoxious color, so her yoga friends at the senior center can ask her about it (“Girl, I saw those nails from across the room while I was mid-downward dog!”).

Earlier this week, I painted my nails L8R G8R, a green shade from China Glaze’s OMG Text in Colour 2BHot collection. This weekend, just to switch it up, I think mom might like to rock one of China Glaze’s six cool, shimmery shades from the 2BKEWL collection ($27 for the entire set).

I’m trying to decide among…

OMG (Oh my gawd)– holographic grey with rainbow shimmer
2NITE (Tonight) – holographic blue
IDK (I don’t know) – holographic violet
BFF (Best friends forever) – holographic purple-blue
LOL (Laugh out loud) – holographic dark purple
DV8 (Deviate) – holographic teal

I’m leaning toward DV8, but I think all of them are pretty.

Freeman Papaya and Lime Overboard Shine Conditioner: Great Hair for the Cost of a Margarita

May 9th, 2008 by Karen 20 Comments

freeman-papaya-lime-overboard-shine-conditioner

I got softer hair this week for $3.99. I think that’s quite an accomplishment. I’ve been conditioner washing with Freeman Papaya and Lime Overboard Shine Conditioner, and now my hair is so smooth and bouncy-looking that I feel like I belong in a hair commercial, running like a fool with my arms up through a field of flowers while dappled sunlight caresses my new $3.99 hair. Fo’ reals.

Conditioner washing involves showering with a conditioner in place of shampoo. In a nutshell, I skip the shampoo (en lieu of conditioner) a few days a week to extend the life of my hair color and to prevent my wavy hair from drying out. It’s one of my favorite hair beauty tips. I’ve conditioner washed with a number of drugstore conditioners before, but Overboard Shine outshines them all.

I find that I have to use a palm-full of Overboard Shine to clean my shoulder length hair, but in this case I don’t mind having to use a lot of product because it’s so darn cheap. After washing and thoroughly rinsing with Overboard Shine, my hair and scalp feel refreshed and clean without feeling stripped.

Hi, cuties! My migraine’s mostly gone. Last night was rough, but I feel so much better now. Maybe it was the headache, but I had a string of messed-up makeup dreams last night.
