Science Agrees: Yes, You Need More Girl Time

February 24th, 2008 by Karen 22 Comments

Connecting with girlfriends for afternoon tea yesterday left me feeling great, probably the happiest and most relaxed I’ve felt in a long time. I’ve been busy with work lately, and it felt nice just spending time with a big bunch of girls. After tea, as I drove home across the Golden Gate Bridge, I thought about friendship and the power it has to make us feel better.

An outside view of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco
ritz-hotel-cable-car.jpg

This is one of those painfully obvious things, but research shows that socializing with friends may help you live longer. Maybe that’s why I love blogging so much. =)

A landmark UCLA study suggested that spending time with friends helped counteract the effects of stress on the body. Study after study confirms that having a social network reduces one’s risk of disease by lowering heart rate, cholesterol and blood pressure.

The UCLA study suggested that when the hormone oxytocin is released (the same hormone released during hugging, touching and orgasm) as part of the stress response in women, it has a different effect on women than it does on men; in women (but not in men), oxytocin is believed to have a calming effect. It’s also believed to trigger a desire to tend to others (like children) and to gather with other women. And, when a woman engages in “tending and befriending,” studies suggest that even more oxytocin gets released, further countering the effects of stress on the body.

I don’t know if it was the oxytocin talkin’, but I definitely felt less stressed after tea at the Ritz. Most of Ritz-Carlton’s hotels worldwide offer an afternoon tea service. Tony Roumph, Lounge Manager of the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, suggested directly checking with a hotel beforehand because at some properties tea service is by reservation only.

At the Ritz in Frisco, afternoon tea is served between 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Fridays and between 1-4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. It was served in the hotel’s Lobby Lounge, an elegant room with city views, crystal chandeliers, fine china and live music (a harpist, yo!). Most hotels will choose one of their more elegant rooms for afternoon tea. Dress was sophisticated casual (aka not your scrubby jeans and Adidas Shell Toe sneakers). I wore a black knit dress with boots, and a few of the other girls wore dark jeans with cute sweaters.

My friends and I made reservations a few weeks ago, giving the hotel our menu selection at the time. We had six ladies in our party, but Tony says they can accommodate groups of up to 30 people. It’s also not uncommon at all for people to attend tea service by themselves, so if you’re not a fan of big groups or just want to fly solo, that’s cool too.

Planning an Event…

If you’re in charge of planning afternoon tea (or any other event) with the girls, spreadsheets and e-mail can help.

Start by hammering out the bigger details first, like the size of the group, schedule and budget, and work from there down to the smaller details, like (for afternoon tea) the menu.

If I’m in charge of planning something for a group, the first thing I’ll do is send out a mass e-mail to see who can attend. In it, I’ll ask members of the group to choose from a few dates. Not everyone takes e-mail seriously, so one thing that can help move things along are the words “Reply Requested” in the subject line. After each person provides their preferred dates, I note them on my trusty chart, circling the date on which the largest number of people can attend. Here’s an example chart I made in Microsoft Excel (hand-drawn charts work, too):

tea-party-planning.jpg

I love spreadsheets for planning. After pinpointing a date, I’ll use a similar process to pinpoint a time. Spreadsheets are also a handy way to track a large number of different menu (or drink) choices. LOL, can you tell I’m a freak for details?

Afternoon Tea…

After we took our seats, they brought out the champagne! We did some catching up while a harpist interpreted classic Beatles tunes.

We chose what the SF Ritz-Carlton refers to as the Royal Tea Service, one of five tiers of service ranging from $36-$49 per person. After we finished our champagne cocktails, Neizel, our wonderful server, brought out two trays of food and explained the different types of sandwiches, pastries and sweets.

6.jpg

My favorites were the cucumber, roquefort and walnut on white bread and the egg and chive sandwiches, yum! I also really liked the scone, which I smothered in Devonshire cream.

Neizel then poured the tea and kept it flowing throughout the party. We choose from among four different varieties: vanilla bean-black tea, chocolate, peppermint and darjeeling.

ritz-carlton-san-francisco-5

After the sandwiches and pastries it was time for dessert, in this case fresh strawberries and vanilla cream.

While afternoon tea was fun, I realize that it was the socializing part that really made the day.

Girl Time: MAC Fafi and Afternoon Tea

February 23rd, 2008 by Karen 31 Comments

Hi, guys! Just wanted to pop by and say hello. I’ve been away from the computer because I spent the day in San Francisco with friends from school. We met for afternoon tea at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and did some much needed catching up!

Despite 3-inch heels, I’m the short one in the middle…

Feed me, Seymore

The Royal Tea service ($49 per person) includes:

  • Champagne “Ritz” Cocktail
  • Selection of Tea
  • Smoked Salmon with Pickled Onion & Caviar on Dark Rye
  • Cucumber, Roquefort and Walnuts on White Bread
  • Prosciutto with Melon on Light Rye Bread
  • Egg and Chive Sandwich
  • Freshly Baked Scone with Devonshire cream, Lemon Curd and Strawberry Preserves
  • English Tea Cakes, Chef’s Choice of Tea Pastries
  • Chocolate Mignardises
  • Fresh Strawberries with Vanilla Cream

Select Ritz-Carlton hotels worldwide offer afternoon tea service.

I’m not wearing any lipstick in the picture above, but this is what the lips looked like before I munched on cucumber sandwiches and downed 10 cups of darjeeling tea (with lots of cream and sugar).

Yes, you read that correctly. That’s 10 cups of tea. I’m so hyper right now, WHEEE!

Anyway, I hope you had a good day too. 🙂

Makeup Mania Strikes Neiman Marcus Beauty Event

February 22nd, 2008 by Karen 35 Comments

Today I suffered a debilitating case of makeup buying indecision at the Neiman Marcus Beauty Event, a national event (in-store and online) in which visitors to Neiman Marcus stores who purchase $100 in beauty or fragrance products through March 2 receive a batch of six sample products along with their choice of tote bags in hot pink, teal or neon green.

neiman-marcus-beauty-event.jpg

Cute bag, yah? I entered the San Francisco Union Square store on a mission. I cruised the beauty department with my homegirl Jo-money, scoping out spring products from both Nars and Laura Mercier, but I couldn’t decide what to get.

I love both lines, but today I was caught between NARS Shanghi Lily and Laura Mercier Seduction. I knew I couldn’t get everything I wanted, but instead of actually getting anything, I ended up snapping pictures, assuming that as the day wore on I’d choose from one collection or the other.

I went to lunch thinking food might help (hey, it always does) and took a long walk down Market Street in SF, but the answer never came to me. I couldn’t decide between the two collections and went home empty handed. 🙁

nars-laura-displays1.jpg

Yeah, I know I should have just chosen a few products from each line, but I have until March 2 to make up my mind. Laura? Nars? BOTH? *Wallet throbs* HELP! What should I do?

Bright Blushes, Fan Brushes: Shu Uemura 7.5EX Brush Makes Color Easy

February 21st, 2008 by Karen 37 Comments

Anyone else terrified by goats? I know I can’t be the only one. They’ve got those creepy horizontal pupils that look ready to teleport you across the River Styx, and at the petting zoo they’re always really naughty; they walk right up and try to snatch the food from my hands or chew on my t-shirt or shoelaces.

Anti-goat bias initially made me reluctant to give the Shu Uemura 7.5EX brush ($35) much love. The word “goat” (strike one) is etched into the brush’s handle, and the white, fan-shaped brush head is made from — you guessed it — goat hair (strike two). I’m glad I was able to overlook my problem with goats, though, because the 7.5EX deserves love.

white-goat-1.jpg

Soft and luxurious, the bristles of Shu’s 7.5EX brush feel nothing like the dirty, coarse hair of goats at the petting zoo. The Shu Uemura Web site describes the 7.5EX brush as having a “light” touch, meaning that when you use it to apply powders, the color applies sheer, not intense. Not just for blush, this InStyle Best of Beauty Buy can also be used to blend or to dust away loose powder.

This morning I was in a hurry but wanted to wear a bright blue-pink blush. I know from experience that if I rush while using a regular blush brush, I end up with scary-clown-who-haunts-children’s-nightmares cheeks, so I grabbed the 7.5EX brush instead.

Wearing a big, goofy smile (the goofy part is key!), I applied MAC Fafi’s Fashion Frenzy to the apples of my cheeks, lightly drawing color upward at an angle toward my ears. With just a few swipes my cheeks looked pinched and flushed. I can’t wait to use this brush with my other bright cheek shades, MAC’s Dollymix (hot pink) and Frankly Scarlet (bright red).

If you have a few bright blushes in your color collection that you don’t use enough, give them another try with the 7.5EX, a brush designed for powdered products. Blush newbies who have a tendency to use too much color might dig it too because its fanned bristles make it almost impossible to over-apply color.

Don’t be afraid to go bold with your blush colors. With the 7.5EX in your arsenal, go forth and be bright!

Gimme, Gimme Rice, aka I Hate P.F. Chang’s

February 21st, 2008 by Karen 23 Comments

I didn’t think it was possible before last night, but apparently a venue does exist that I hate even more than the dreaded Container Store, and its name is P.F. Chang’s China Bistro.

P.F. Chang’s is a chain of Chinese restaurants. We have one here in Marin. You can’t miss ’em because out front they hang a red neon sign beside a life-size stone statue of a Medieval Chinese warrior’s horse. Not the warrior, just the horse. The horse stares your ass down when you enter the restaurant. It’s kinda freaky but in a cool way.

I went there for dinner last night to celebrate the blog’s birthday (before the party =), and I was soooo excited to go because a friend recommended the place, saying the food and service were great.

I worked on my cardio before dinner, so I was starving when I got to the restaurant and extra excited when the waiter warned me of their “huge, family style portions.” BRING IT, said my tummy.

Twenty minutes later, the friendly waiter brought out our food. Sadly, the portions were … not huge. There was barely enough to feed my right thigh! The kicker happened when he set down a teeny, tiny bowl of white rice in front of me — seriously, the little scoop of rice was the size of my eyeball. I wanted to say, “Um… sir, what am I supposed to do with this?” How do you stiff someone on rice at a Chinese restaurant?! It goes against all laws of nature.

pf-changs.jpg

I’d like to give P.F. Chang’s the benefit of the doubt in this catastrophe. Maybe last night was an exception. Perhaps they were running low on rice and had to cut back. I don’t know, but as far as blog birthday dinners go, that dinner so did not count! I think I’ll have to go to at least two more celebratory dinners to ease the pain. 🙂

What did you do before the blog’s birthday party last night? I hope it involved adequate amounts of rice, LOL!

Makeup Inspiration: MAC Fafi Fun ‘n’ Sexy Lipstick, Pink Lilies

February 21st, 2008 by Karen 50 Comments

What kinds of things inspire your makeup looks? I get a lot of my ideas for looks from magazines, other beauty blogs and books, but some of my favorite looks are based upon things in nature, especially flowers. I’m a sucker for flowers.

Can you spot the mini calla lilies in my wedding bouquet?
wedding-bouquet-callas.jpg

Pretty, yah? I love all flowers, but lilies are my favorite, so whenever El Hub gets me flowers, he always throws in a lily or two for good measure. Last week’s Valentine’s bouquet contained a handful of pink stargazer lilies.

pink-lily-1.jpg

I still have the bouquet in my bedroom. When I awoke and saw them this morning, I decided I wanted to wear a lip color today that reminded me of pink lilies! I grabbed two hot pink cuties from the MAC Fafi collection — Fun ‘n’ Sexy lipstick ($14) and Cult Fave lipgloss ($14) — and went to work building my look for today.

Fun ‘n’ Sexy lipstick reminds me of the bright pink Wet n’ Wild lipsticks I wore as a teenager, ha!
mac-fafi-fun-n-sexy.jpg

mac-fafi-cult-fave-lipglass.jpg

Here’s the pink stargazer inspired result…
mac-fafi-lips.jpg

To get this look, I first lined my lips with MAC’s Pink Treat Cremestick Liner and then applied two coats of Fun ‘n’ Sexy with a MAC 316 lip brush. I topped it off with a layer of Cult Fave applied directly from the lip gloss applicator.

It’s raining here in San Francisco today, but this pink lip combo puts a little springtime pep in my step. A girl can never have enough pink lip combos, right? What’s your favorite?

It’s a Birthday Party! Makeup and Beauty Blog Turns One

February 20th, 2008 by Karen 95 Comments

Hey ya’ll,

Makeup and Beauty Blog turns one today! I’d love to throw a raging birthday party (complete with keg) for all of us here in my little apartment, but then readers from across the globe wouldn’t be able to attend. I don’t want anyone to feel left out, so since we can’t all be together in real life this time, let’s have an online birthday party instead! This party is strictly B.Y.O.B. — that’s bring your own beauty.

makeup-and-beauty-blog-one-year-anniversary-1

There will be plenty o’ dessert…

cupcake-1.jpg

And, of course, the DJ will be off the hook because what’s the point of a party without dancing?

fussytabby-dj-meow-mix-1.jpg

DJ Meow Mix is taking party song requests! Mine is Get Into the Groove by Madonna because it always makes me feel like shaking my booty.

How about a little eye candy?

mac-fafi-christian-bale-1.jpg

Last, but not least, there’s party favors (my favorite part, woo hoo!)…
mac-fafi-party-favors.jpg

Let’s rock it out!

For the party, let me know…

1. What makeup you’ll be rockin’
2. What your party outfit looks like
3. What food/drink you’re bringing (it’s a potluck, haaay!)
4. Your favorite party song (DJ Meow Mix will play *anything*)
5. Who you’re bringing (significant other, friend, cat, dog, iguana, etc.)
