Keanu Reeves Is My Boyfriend, Vol. 2: Revlon So Fierce! Vinyl Eyeliner

July 29th, 2019 by Karen 5 Comments

revlon so fierce liner
So fierce, babe!

This is a series featuring stellar drugstore gems in which my (very much pretend) boyfriend Keanu Reeves helps me test makeup… He’s gallant like that, you know? ?

Last night, Keanu and I laughed and cried our way through The Notebook (he’s so sensitive!), and even through all the tears, my new Revlon So Fierce Vinyl Eyeliner stayed put. I know this because at the end of the move, Keanu ever-so-tenderly cradled my chin and said, “Babe, even when you’re crying like a baby, you and your winged liner are absolutely perfect.” Later he added: “Your liner looks almost as good as mine.”

Revlon So Fierce Vinyl Eyeliner ($8.99)

  • A waterproof long-wearing gel pencil liner with a glossy — but not shimmery — finish that dries in less than a minute
  • Available in three shades
  • Completely budge-proof through tears, sweat and splashes with water
  • Highly pigmented
  • Applies smoothly
  • Doesn’t transfer up into my crease; however, when I aggressively rub it with my fingers, it smudges, so if you rub your eyes you’re probably better off with something long-wearing and liquid like MAC Liquidlast instead.
  • Stays put on lash lines and water lines, but I wouldn’t use it on water lines if yours are very dry.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 585

July 29th, 2019 by Karen 24 Comments

mac lipsticks national lipstick day
Happy National Lipstick Day!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

    1. What lipstick do you wear the most?

Lately, MAC Velvet Teddy (that is, when it’s not falling in the toilet, OY!), because it goes with everything.

    2. What’s your upper monetary limit for a lipstick?

Hmm… $55 seems rational (ha ha ha) to me!

    3. Purple or brown lipstick? (Don’t overthink it.)

I’d almost say purple, because purple is tons of fun, but I’ve been told I can pull off brown pretty well. So brown, I guess.

    4. What lipstick color do you feel weird wearing?

Anything on the pastel side, especially if it’s opaque. I feel extremely self-conscious wearing light pastel pinks.

    5. If you had to apply red lipstick ? while you were riding a roller coaster, how would you do?

My first reaction was, “I got this boo,” because I’m not afraid of heights or thrill rides, but let’s get real. I’d end up looking like a really sweaty version of The Joker!

It’s kinda funny to me…

…that lipstick should have its own national day of celebration, because isn’t every day Lipstick Day? LOL.

What lippie are you wearing today? Right now, I’m wearing matte rosy brown MAC Half ‘N Half, and note to self, I need to give it some Unsung Heroes love ASAP.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I hope you have a focused, productive week, friend. ?

P.P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon!

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 564

July 28th, 2019 by Karen 9 Comments

A lot of people don’t know that Tabs was considered a ballet prodigy, among his many other extraordinary skills and accomplishments, and rose to stardom despite not starting ballet until the age of 3.

But two years later, he won the Novato Music Center Spotlight Award as the best dancer in Novato, California. Shortly thereafter, he became the first American Shorthair to be promoted to principal dancer in the Novato Ballet Theater’s 12-year history.

As if that weren’t impressive enough, he also served as Head Pastry Chef at Le Chat, Novato’s premier eatery for cats, and was named The World’s Best Catnip Pastry Chef in 2015.

On top of all that, between kitty modeling stints and his years as a chef and professional feline football player, he was also an award-winning feline fisherman.

Sure, most people know about his kitty modeling feats, but Tabs was so much more than that. It’s truly amazing just how remarkable he was at so many different things. ❤️?

Saturday Surfing, July 27th, 2019

July 27th, 2019 by Karen 23 Comments

nars and mac blushes
A blush a day?

Every once in a while, I get this crazy hankering to do things like wear every single blush in my collection.

Not all at once, mind you (although that would be kinda fun) — but one blush per day. Or, to try on every single lipstick I own.

OMG. Like, how long would this actually take me? I’ve been trying to do the math, and I estimate it would take roughly FOR-EV-ER.

Yeah, I’m still cleaning out my makeup drawers, but I’m seriously considering doing the blush thing, even if it’s just to make my way through my MAC blushes…and maybe NARS…and I’m realizing right now that homegirl’s got a thing for warm peachy coral blush. It’s PRETTY obvious when I see them all together, HA HA HA!

Have you ever tried something like this? — using every lip product or blush in your makeup collection? I think it could be quite fun and weirdly satisfying in an OCD way.

In today’s news, I’ll be chipping away at Marie Kondo-ing my makeup today, among doing other things, including prepping the condo for the work that starts next week.

About that, none of it is terribly exciting work at this point. I *wish* it was the fun stuff, but it’s just repairs to the house guts. A new water heater, new furnace, and a new air conditioner, because NONE of them work correctly. The work needs to happen (especially the furnace replacement before it cools down in fall), but they aren’t aesthetically sexy home projects.

Lord knows how I’m going to be able to write with people clanging all up in our pipes and sh*t, but I’ll try!

I may post a lotta lists next week…

As for this weekend’s actual Caturday surfing, here are some tidbits and factoids that caught my eye. I hope you find them interesting, too. ?

  • Did you know that for the ancient Greeks and Romans, a unibrow was *THE* ultimate of all #browgoals, and was associated with the most desirable and intelligent women? This post plucks out (ha ha) the most interesting fun facts about the history of eyebrows.
  • So, El Hub and I took Connor to watch The Lion King last weekend, and one of the movie previews was for the new Cats movie. After it played, we just sat there looking at each other wondering, “WTF just happened?” I’ve never seen the musical… All I know about Cats is the Memory song, which I remember being major in the ’80s, and that the characters are a bunch of ? felines, but the trailer was weird as hell, and I don’t know if it’s meant to be intentionally campy, or if you’re supposed to take it seriously. I was…and still am… very confused. As a bonafide CCL, I feel like I should be down with a Cats movie, but I dunno, man. (I put the trailer down below.)
  • HOORAY! New York is the first state in the nation to ban declawing cats. Let’s hope the other 49 follow suit.
  • Here’s how to pet a cat, according to science. ?‍?❤️?
  • According to some experts, the K-beauty 10-step skin care routine is a myth perpetuated by marketing, and Korean beauty enthusiasts don’t use nearly as many skin care products as we’re led to believe.
  • Looking for a way to start a four-alarm blaze in your wallet? Well, Tom Ford’s launching skin care soon…with a $350 serum and a $450 cream, and that’s just for starters.
  • Woo-hoo! — I see my fave Bliss blue wax on this list of the best waxing products for at-home hair removal.
  • Entrepreneurial scientists are currently engaged in a global arms race to generate sustainable hair follicles that will hold their shape, and whoever finds it first could render hair loss obsolete (for the very wealthy, at least).
  • A friendly reminder to unplug your heated hair devices, especially flat irons

My obsession with Sir John is real, people.

SO. REAL.

Seriously, so weird

New From Urban Decay: Stay Naked Foundation and Concealer, and Vice Lip Chemistry

July 26th, 2019 by Karen 5 Comments

urban decay stay naked foundation concealer top
At Urban Decay, nudity rules.

Keep your underwear on, please. Even though Urban Decay wants you to Stay Naked, I would strongly urge you against going completely commando, because hello! — air conditioning is no joke!

Stay Naked, a new collection available meow from UD, includes a liquid foundation, concealer and sheer lip tints.

STAY NAKED WEIGHTLESS LIQUID FOUNDATION, $39

What is this — blood magic? Because one layer of Urban Decay’s new medium-coverage, pore-blurring Stay Naked Foundation hides uneven pigmentation on my cheeks without masking my freckles. It’s exactly the kind of sheer, barely-there coverage I love, and even though the matte finish is juuuuust starts out being a tad too matte for my taste (I’m a dewy kinda gal), it mellows out over the course of about an hour into something more satiny and natural looking — like an ever-so-slightly perfected version of natural skin. It’s one of those base products that looks better and better as the day goes on.

urban decay stay naked foundation swatches
I tested the following shades of the concealer and foundation, and the closest foundation match to my skin is 51WY, although right now it’s a little light for me because I’m tanner than usual at the moment. The concealers I tried are waaaay lighter than I’d normally wear, but I tried them anyway to see if I liked the texture and finish. By the way, I’m an NC42 in MAC.

If you’ve ever tried and liked Estée Lauder Double Wear Light, you’ll probably love Stay Naked, too. It very much looks and feels like that underrated foundation hero, but UD’s comes in a BILLION different undertones for cool, warm and olive tones, as well as 50 different colors.

Site note: The Fenty effect is still alive and well!

STAY NAKED WEIGHTLESS LIQUID FOUNDATION

  • Doesn’t oxidize
  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Touchy pump! (Mine squirts stuff halfway across my desk if I’m not careful.)
  • I’m a MAC NC42 and wear 51WY.
  • I like to apply it with a synthetic buffing brush for the most natural coverage.
  • Looks like real skin in all types of lighting.
  • Long-wearing and sticks to skin like glue, even if you rub at it aggressively.

You’ll probably also like this if you like the sheerness of a BB cream, tinted moisturizer, or even something like MAC Face and Body, but you just want a little more coverage (but not full-on opacity). I think it’s more like an intense tinted moisturizer — like, if you took Laura Mercier’s classic TM and added a few drops of a full-coverage concealer to it.

STAY NAKED CORRECTING CONCEALER, $29

Along with the foundation, UD also recently launched a new line of complementary liquid Stay Naked Concealers. Like the new base, Stay Naked Concealer is lightweight and long-wearing with a matte finish, but the coverage is completely opaque, with high pigment on par with full-coverage baddies like Tarte Shape Tape. Just for fun (and for old time’s sake), I packed it on beneath my eyes and was wowed by the fact that it refused to settle into my fine lines and did not look heavy at all.

What Made You Fall in Love With Beauty?

July 25th, 2019 by Karen 17 Comments

The other day I was watching this interview that beauty journalist Sali Hughes did with my makeup spirit animal, Sir John, a.k.a Beyonce’s makeup artist, a.k.a a living makeup legend, and Sali asked Sir John what made him fall in love with beauty.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

Sir John said that for him, beauty was watching his mom, a makeup minimalist, put on her makeup every morning… For me, that wasn’t the case because my mom really wasn’t a makeup person. (I know, we’re so different!) She didn’t really wear a lot of it, and I didn’t have any sisters or close aunts or other family members to watch put on their makeup, but I was still always interested in makeup.

I remember my mom had a couple pieces (an eyeshadow compact and a blush) that she kept in the bathroom, and I remember going in there and looking at them with curiosity and wonder… They seemed so magical and mysterious to me!

But the real obsession didn’t kick in until I was 12 and 13, and it was fueled by magazines. This is probably going to sound odd to someone growing up now, because magazines don’t have the pull they did back in the day, but we didn’t have the Internet in the ’80s and early ’90s. I mean, our Internet was the magazine aisle at Thrifty’s, and I would tear into my monthly issue of Seventeen every month for the beauty stories, especially the makeup and hair stories. I did that from about 13 to 20… I don’t remember nails getting a lot of attention back then, though.

Oh, and here’s another sign of the times: I don’t remember seeing a lot of diversity in the how-to articles. Like, hooded lids? What’s that?! I would try eyeshadow tutorials and wonder what I was doing wrong because when I put shadow in my crease, it didn’t look anything like what Cameron Diaz was doing, LOL! Oh, and the hair how-tos were all made for girls with stick straight hair, so again I would wonder why they wouldn’t work on my wavy, unruly hair.

One thing I would do is tear out pages with pictures of makeup I liked and tuck them away for future reference, and I still do it today! I find old torn out pages in the most random places…

Keanu Reeves Is My Boyfriend, Vol. 1: Maybelline Superstay Ink Crayon Lipstick

July 24th, 2019 by Karen 16 Comments

maybelline super stay ink crayon
(Pretend) boyfriend approved.

This post is the first in a series of stellar drugstore gems in which my (very much pretend) boyfriend Keanu Reeves helps me test makeup… He’s gallant like that, you know? ?

I can confirm that these pigmented, matte twist-up crayons by Maybelline are kiss-proof because I made out with Keanu Reeves for 20 minutes while wearing one of them (Lead the Way), and it didn’t move at all!

It smelled and tasted like vanilla-spiked Hawaiian Punch, which Keanu adored, but ewww! — it made my stomach churn. My boo likes it, though, so I guess I’ll have to endure… The things I do for that man, le sigh!

maybelline super stay ink crayon
So many colors!

Maybelline Superstay Ink Crayon Lipstick, $9.49 each

  • It’s available in 12 shades for less than $10 each.
  • The formula is almost as smooth as Keanu’s raven locks, with nary a vertical lip line in sight.
  • The attached sharpener (which is hidden in the base of the pen) keeps the tip tapered.
  • It’s long lasting (from 3-4 hours), but it quickly melts away with makeup remover.
  • The matte formula isn’t drying; it IS comfortable; and it doesn’t make your lips look a billion years old.
  • It looks expensive.

Milkshakes and Massages

July 24th, 2019 by Karen 17 Comments

take me to shake shack
YAAAAS KWEEN!!!

Things that go together like cookies and cream:

  • Reality TV and bad decision making
  • Underwear and pants (generally speaking)
  • Prince and the Revolution
  • Fast food and deep-tissue massage

And yes, I just figured out that last one, and I think it may be the key to the universe’s riches — a business that combines a luxury spa with bougie-bouge fast food.

I know this ’cause I saw my high school friends Jen and Cindy last weekend for our yearly summertime spa catch-up, and this time we met at a fancy-schmancy outdoor mini-mall called the Marin Country Mart.

Oh, and side note, when you live in the Bay Area and you’re tasked with doing the planning for a get-together, you try to arrange for the festivities to happen on your side of whichever of the three Bay Area bridges is closest to you (Dumbarton, Bay Bridge or the Golden Gate). #bayareafunfacts

Anyway, the Marin Country Mart. It has turtles in a fountain, upscale restaurants, shopping, and a large parking lot where, over the years, I’ve weaved creative blankets of expletives at people who have rudely cut me off. (My 10-year-old Mazda looks out of place amidst the sea of Range Rovers and Teslas.)

It also just so happens to be heaven on earth, because it has a Shake Shack *and* an International Orange Spa.

shake shack
I had a cheeseburger, fries and a salted caramel milkshake.

I love going to spas, but the snack situation is almost always dire. There may be cucumber water, tea, fruit and, if you’re lucky, trail mix. International Orange has dried apricots and dark chocolate, which is OK I guess…but it’s nowhere near as satisfying as stuffing yourself silly with a salted caramel milkshake, cheeseburger and fries!

So, we had a long lunch at Shake Shack — which is like In-n-Out, but with super intense milkshakes — then walked over to International Orange for massages.

Minimalist and zen…

My 60-minute deep-tissue massage liquefied my bones. When it ended, I crawled into a lounge chair in the relaxation room, covered myself with a blanket, and fell asleep…

At the end of the day, we all made a blood vow to return and experience the magic of milkshakes and massages again, ASAP.

I’m serious, this is a highly recommended spa+cuisine combo!

New face base dynamic duo

While we’re on the topic of ultimate combos…

MAC Face and Body and Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Super Natural Concealer are SO, SO GOOD together.

mac face and body kevyn aucoin etherealist
For Face and Body, I usually do a mix of C4 and C5. In the Kevyn Aucoin Supernatural Concealer, I wear EC04 (the peachy shade for color correcting) and EC06 (a medium warm beige).

Super Natural is yet another makeup gem I unearthed while recently cleaning out my makeup drawers. It’s a medium-coverage liquid concealer with a demi-satin finish and comes in eight shades.

When I first tried it a while back, I remember loving how it looked on my skin, but I wasn’t a fan of the way it disappeared under my eyes.

But when I wear it on my cheeks on top of Face and Body, it’s a different story.
