Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 574

May 6th, 2019 by Karen 22 Comments

karen and tabs every day is a gift
Today is a good day to have a good day. ☀️

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

    1. Bath or shower?

    I take showers our of sheer necessity because they’re so much quicker than long, luxurious (heavenly) baths, but if I were a lady of leisure, and perhaps also had a gloriously deep old-fashioned clawfoot tub, I’d be taking baths all day, every day, for sure.

    With lots of bubbles… Can never have too many bubbles. And music!

    2. A skin care step you won’t skip?

    Removing my makeup every night before bed. I never skip it, even when I was shaking my groove thang and going out a lot back in the day and came home at an obnoxious hour (by which time I’m usually in my fourth or fifth REM cycle now), I would always take off my makeup.

    I used to keep makeup remover wipes on my nightstand next to my bed so I could just collapse onto my comforter, start wiping my makeup away while I was horizontal, and then drift off to sleep right then and there…

    3. What’s the last product you finished?

    Body cream. I go through A LOT of that stuff. This time it was H2O Plus Coconut Lemon Verbena (smells tropical but not “sun-screeny”).

    4. What’s the last dance you learned?

    Um…that one that all the kids are doing, or may have been doing a few years ago? I think it’s called the floss?

    It’s the one where you stand with your feet shoulder length apart and rock your arms back and forth (or something).

    Previous to that, I also learned a six-step because I was learning how to break dance, but this was a while ago…

    5. Your first beauty product obsession?

    It was back in high school: Revlon Toast of New York lipstick!

    All the girls wore it. (In case you’re wondering, yes, it’s still around.)

The thing I love most about cats

That you can never quite tell whether they’re about to swat you in the face, or give you a head boop.

They’ve got that whole mystery thing down pat! Even after all these years of assisting Tabs, I still can’t predict when he’s going to go full-on Naomi Campbell and throw a phone at me, or if he’s going to nuzzle me with purrs and lovies.

It’s one of his many talents…

He ? and I want to remind you to make the most of this beautiful Monday. And in case you haven’t heard it yet today, you are ? cherished, and you are loved. ❤️

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addicts,

Karen and Tabs

Saturday Surfing, May 4th, 2019

May 4th, 2019 by Karen 8 Comments

essie nail polish all you need is love and a cat
Paws need love, too.

Hi, friends. It’s a beautiful day to 1) HUG YOUR LOVED ONES and 2) do your nails (I’m about to do both). Just a quick reminder. 🙂

Short and sweet Saturday Surfing “hello” this morning because I have important work to do. (Hint: It involves giving one retired kitty supermodel unlimited lap time and lurvies.) Today I’ll be horizontal, on the couch, with a free and open tummy, chest and my right shoulder (always the right) so that Tabs can purr, hug and make as many biscuits as he pleases. There will also probably be lots of terrible Bravo and Lifetime television up in the mix.

  • According to The Cut, these are the 20 best drugstore mascaras and 14 best face moisturizers for dry skin.
  • From Why we need to take pet loss seriously, “It is time we gave grieving pet owners the recognition, support and consideration they need. Yes, it is up to us to identify and address our emotional wounds when our pet dies, but the more validation we receive from those around us, the quicker and the more complete our psychological recovery will be.”
  • For my fellow GoT fans, here’s what the Night King looks like without all of his makeup.
  • I want to try some of these makeup lines for men to see how they do for a no-makeup makeup look.
  • My makeup spirit animal, Sir John, otherwise known as “Queen Bey’s face painter extraordinaire,” has feeeeeelings about highlighter: “Between the eyes, it’s really flattering, but on the tip of the nose you like a porn star,” he jokes.
  • I always like learning about entrepreneurs in the beauty field, and this is how Atlanta’s Sarah Biggers started her brand, Clove + Hollow.
  • Here are some cool edgy eye makeup looks for Asian eye shapes.

Thank you for all your support and kindness for the past week. Sending you so much love from me and my tabby boy.

The New Hourglass Unreal High Shine Volumizing Lip Gloss: Swatches of Canvas, Child, Provoke, Prose, Fever and Horizon

May 3rd, 2019 by Karen 8 Comments

hourglass unreal high shine volumizing lip gloss 2
Five of 18 new Hourglass Unreal Volumizing Lip Glosses ($30)

Quick take

I’m not completely sold on the plumping…because I don’t really see it, but if you don’t mind the $30, check out these new glosses. I think they’re pretty. They’re also borderline moisturizing, highly pigmented, super smooth and easy to apply. Canvas is my favorite. It’s the perfect “just throw it in your purse and forget about it” color. You can see them all now at Sephora and the Hourglass website.

Even though Tabs will always be “the people’s cat” — that scrappy ragamuffin who strutted and clawed his way off the mean streets of Mill Valley — I’ll always remember his edgy fashion sense and impeccable style.

The fashion gods didn’t simply sculpt his glorious tum-tum from Carrera marble. They also imbued him with the gift of sight and the ability to recognize quality high-end makeup, like these tubes of Hourglass plumping gloss.

They’re from the new Hourglass Unreal High Shine Volumizing Lip Gloss line, which just launched today.

Thoughts and first impressions…

  • Not to worry. If you’re a fan of the Hourglass Extreme Sheen glosses, I believe Hourglass is still keeping them around. I don’t think they’re being phased out (which is always my first thought when new things are released).
  • Some of the Unreal High Shine shades are similar to the Extreme Sheens (Child, Canvas, Ignite and Icon).
  • The medium-weight formula doesn’t feel sticky. The texture reminds me a lot of the Chanel Glossimers.
  • I feel a slight (not painful) tingle when I apply them, but the tingle disappears within a few minutes.
  • They taste and smells faintly of mint for about five minutes.
  • They are CRAZY, STUPID OPAQUE (!), which you might think would make them tricky to apply, since full-on glosses will often slip beyond your natural natural lip lines, but these are actually easy to apply. They go on smoothly (the paddle-shaped applicator is fool-proof) without settling into vertical lip lines or breaking the boundary around my lips.
  • Wear time is from 2-3 hours.
  • Also, I don’t find these drying at all. I’d almost call them moisturizing!
  • Are they volumizing? Eh…I can’t tell. Maybe a little. Regardless, I like the way they look.

Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick Swatches, and a Favorite Piece of Writing

May 3rd, 2019 by Karen 11 Comments

make up for ever artist rouge lipsticks
A few fun, summery shades from Make Up For Ever’s permanent collection ($22 each)

Been thinking about this poem a lot lately. At my first job in San Francisco, my boss had this on the wall of his office, and every few years I re-read it and fall in love with it again.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

— Max Ehrmann

And because this is still technically a makeup blog, some of the bright, cheerful shades from the Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick Line…

The tube tips look crazy, right? They’re actually really good at getting into the corners. I just wish it was easier to keep them sharp.

Blue Kitten Flicks, Lessons From My Cat, and Chanel (Because It’s the Right Thing to Do)

May 2nd, 2019 by Karen 46 Comments

chanel les beiges water fresh tint 1

Tabs: “Don’t you do it. Don’t cry.”

Me: *sniffs* “But what if this is our last photo shoot together?”

Tabs: “Then you should probably wear Chanel. It’s the right thing to do.”

Me: “I’m really trying not to cry but…”

Tabs: “No buts, lady. Think about all of the pics we’ve taken together over the years. How many have there been? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Think about how lucky we’ve — no, how lucky you’ve been to have me in all those pics, because, quite frankly, your poses are hella boring. You’re kind of a hot mess…”

Me: “Oh, man. I’m gonna miss you so much.”

Tabs: “Will you promise me something?”

Me: “Anything.”

Tabs: “Promise me you won’t let grief consume you. Because I know you. I KNOW YOU. And you can’t let that happen. Under any circumstances.”

Me: “I can’t guarantee that, my love.”

Tabs: “You’re going to have to be brave. When I’m gone, you’re going to get out of bed in the morning, comb your fur, get out of your pajamas, and maybe put on a little makeup. Every single day. Most importantly, I want you to smile.”

Me: “People will judge me for grieving too much or too little, for sharing too much or too little, for being weird…”

Tabs: “Kid, I thought you were tougher than that.”

Me: “Apparently, I’m not.”

Tabs: *sigh* “Look, here’s the deal: I’m leaving soon, and I’m sorry but that’s the reality. You’re going to have to keep going, and I want you to do it with love in your heart. If there’s anything I’ve taught you, I hope it’s that. Radiate love, and send your joy out into the world.”

Me: “I’ll do my best…”

Tabs: “That’s all any of us can do. Now, will you smile for me? Let’s play some music, take pictures and enjoy the day.”

Me: “That sounds like a good idea.”

I think this song perfectly captures his spirit/cattitude, and it’s the one we listened to while we took these pics. Now it will always remind me of him.

NARS Summer 2019: Satin Lip Pencil, Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Swatches

May 2nd, 2019 by Karen 14 Comments

Summer lip color: NARS

This morning Tabs turned to me and said, “You know, it’s a funny thing… Legacy.”

“How so?” I replied.

He paused, slowly poured himself a second cup of catnip tea and plucked a chamomile cookie from his favorite white porcelain dish. “I just… I hope you didn’t mind taking care of me all these years. You really have been the best pet assistant and friend I ever dreamed of.”

I sighed. “Oh, Tabs,” I said, scratching him between his ears, “you’ve made me the happiest, luckiest girl in the world. When you sauntered over to me that day in Mill Valley, everything changed for me. I feel blessed to have met you and worked with you all these years.”

“Me too,” he said, slow blinking.

“My sweet boy,” I said, gently wrapping my arms around him and pulling him close for a cheek-to-whiskers hug, “You’ve been such a good boy. I hope you know how much I love you.” ❤️

“I do,” he whispered into my ear, purring. “I love you too.”

Good morning, my friend. Here are some swatches of the Satin and Velvet Matte Lip Pencils from the NARS 2019 Summer Collection.

Tabs isn’t working anymore, but that hasn’t stopped him from giving me side eye for not doing my hair or putting on makeup.

Getting lots of lurvies today

It was also sunny and warm here, and Tabs felt like doing some relaxing catnip gardening on the back deck.

You know, a lot of people don’t know this, but in addition to being a world-renowned kitty modeling mogul, former professional feline football player, entrepreneur, chef and Cat Academy Award-winning movie star, Tabs is also a gifted landscape architect. ?
